I'm Brazilian and she is was 100% right, people think that Brazil is more dangerous that actually really are. We don't have school shooting like in US, and another stuffs more common in south american countries. Fortaleza CE, Natal-RN, João Pessoa PB they are not that dangerous. Rio de Janeiro is more dangerous that this 3 combined, but Brazil is continental very huge, is not all places that you have a high chance to get kill.

I hope you are right, but why does Fortaleza, Natal, and Joao Pessoa have such a high murder rate? Even compared to Rio it seems higher. Is the murder rate high in these cities but the petty thievery lower?

It's a sad situation when jobs like being a waiter are not given to people of color in Brazil because they want to uphold a standard. Even the presidential cabinet in Brazil is mostly fair skinned members. It gives you an idea that while the racism was not as violent in Brazil as it is in America, it continues to keep a socio-economic gap between those who have whiter and darker skin colors.

Yes, colorism is very prevalent in Fortaleza. I have been told many times in my life not to bother applying for certain jobs because "they're beneath" be or because I'm "supposed to be in a high paying job" just because I have whiter skin.
I'm not even 100% white (I'm part Brazilian Indigenous as well,) but because of the way I look people automatically treat me well. It is horrible how people with darker skin or non-white features are treated.
If you ever want a look into an archaic class and race system on par with the caste system in India, visit Northeastern Brazil.

I visited the city around 15 years ago and thought the place was really beautiful, sunny, very hot and windy. Really nice beaches and lots of stuff to do. However seeing your points of views enlightens better the concept of how is it to leave in northeast. Feels like it's a good place to visit. However yet the matter of a dangerous place maybe still lingers and could be depends where what time with who you're with. Just as adds up, the salaries for waiters in northeast should be around R$1.500,00 a month with all benefits.

Imagine living in a world where someone thinks they are entitled to my things that I spent part of my life working for! With all due respect to this sister she is putting her American perspective of races and classes into a completely different situation than the violence that happens in the USA. Just for a tiny itty bitty of context an iPhone in Brazil is around R$ 15.000 to R$20.000 , that is between $3.000 to $4.000 in the USA. No you are not entitled to my property! Also understand that A lot of white folks are under or just above that poverty line in a country like Brazil. Being poor is never an excuse to commit crime. Unless we shed this idea that being a POC and poor as the reason for our problems, we will never be free of our past shackles.

Question. How are you going to use your iPhone if you are dead or paralyzed from the waist down?
I took 3 bullets (.40 caliber) to the upper body (chest, arm, abdomen) from the buisness end a Milwaukee police officer's pistol. I was lucky. I only ended up with some mild permanent nerve damage, a number of whole and partially removed organs. People that have never been shot usually dismiss the prospect of ending up in wheelchair for life or paralyzed from the neck down for life. And to add some context to my views on the price tags of budget, midrange, and flagship smartphones (all new iPhones are flagship). I can't afford an iPhone and have routinley bough budget to midrange adroids. That is to say I haven't been able to affoard one in the USA. So, if one has $3,000 to drop down on an iPhone in Brazil my working guess is that odds are they have the money to buy another one as a replacement. My medical bills--which I never paid and the hospital never took me to court for--was roughly $500,000. A half million. Based on objective mathematics which costs less? (With that said... I get your desire to hold on to your goods, and not relinquish them to 1 or more predatory hoodlums, but a man that can walk and run is rich to man l
      permanently confined to a wheelchair.)

Nobody wants to get shot, but not everyone is wired the same and respond to fight or flight the same way. Just for context but Brazil has free healthcare. Again American eyes for a Brazilian problem. In Brazil most people buy things trough installments just like they would a house or a car and that goes for everything, because things are expensive. Being poor is no excuse for you to be entitled to my property plain and simple, no if’s no but’s. You can not penalize people for having things, I have to spend time working for said “thing/property”. In general, all people naturally self-segregate if they're allowed to choose. I learned that in my freshman year of college. People want to be with their families or those who represent their extended families. For example, the Asian students hung out in groups, the black students hung out in groups, etc., and were not open to those they considered outsiders. My group of friends was an exception in that we had members from three different races, but outside of that, for example, if I walked past a black student who didn't know me and I smiled and said hi, most of them looked right past me based on my race. If you look at different species of animals in nature and also different races of people, they naturally want to self-segregate. Integration is forced on people by governments.

Stealing phones is the MAIN crime that you hear about, and folks who give them up tend to just get another one. They even have phone insurance here for this type of crime.
In the mind of the upper class, carrying an expensive phone is more important than gaining an understanding of WHY such petty crime occurs, how one can reduce the chances of it occurring, and how police cannot be everywhere all the time to keep poor people from stealing phones. The MAJORITY of people who are robbed are not being deleted because of them. As I point out in the vid, refusing to give up the phone after a robber has demanded it is typically how the situation becomes exponentially more dangerous. And to many, it is just a coincidence or a personal failing on the part of the robber that the vast majority of the poor who commit the crimes are also black. Having no money and no ACCESS to money because of the classism that shuts out a massive portion of the population is not seen as a root cause of the issue.
They also do not want to know that in the US, its catalytic converters on cars that are the hot item of the day instead of phones, that kids are having active shewter drills, that a folks are walking into random places with assault weapons and taking out anywhere from 2- 60 people, that half their workplace can be taken out if one person is upset, or that if someone attacks a government property, they will make sure there are still innocent people inside. They DEFINITELY don't want to hear that these types of crime are common, unpredictable, and occur anywhere in the country. They do get mad at me in real life too, when I dont share the idea that every place is overrun with violence and chaos. Just know that when I walk out of the house, I am emotionally prepared to give up the phone/purse/ etc., and replace it later that day.

    • @FortalezaInEnglish

@@DizzyMakavelli You are right. However, always ask WHY?...
Why is it that GLOBALLY it is the black population that is poor and desperate? Are they just inherently dysfunctional, or is there another reason?
We already know the solution to these types of crimes. Poor communities must be flooded with resources like decent shelter, food security, quality education AND pipelines to good jobs, and access to leisure activities and spaces. It is true globally that poverty is heavily associated with street crime. When people have food, shelter, decent work, places to decopmpress, psych counselling, and REAL opportunity, exponentially fewer people lose their lives over phones and shoes.
When societies do not address well known and documented root causes of this type of criminality, the symptoms remain.
If you are in Brazil, ask the upperclass people what they think about the bolsa familia food program (like EBT cards in USA), how they feel about domestic workers having real rights as employees, affirmative action at the free universities, and government spending on public leisure spaces in poor communities...

@@FortalezaInEnglish Nah, don't get me wrong.
I agree with you, Brazilian government messed us really bad, the way they treat us is a crime itself.
But also crime is romanticized, lil dudes go to the wrong path and most of the times there's nothing to do with survive.
Still, if they would Robbin Wood instead of Robbin the Hood.
Dudes are robbing poor people, imagine you battling your way to buy something that cost 4 to 5 times more than should cost to get robbed and eventually killed.
