I was at the "Of Machines" concert featured in the video and so many other Of Machine shows back in ATL at Swayze's and other venues and listen to that album front to back at least once a month and am still in touch with one of their guitarists. Such an incredible band. Was heartbroken to hear about Bennet's passing as well. I would've loved for that project to continue.
Number[S] has aged pretty well and it holds up to this day. One of my favorite records of the 2010s metalcore. Not to mention, their Kesha's Tik Tok cover was incredibly good.
Bro it’s crazy how well it’s aged. It was def ahead of its time and current at the same time. The music doesn’t sound cheesy when you play it back 10 years later, like that fucking insane. Cant say that for many old post hardcore music
I remember listening to this when i was like 15 man. I knew it struck me differently than some other shit, Attack Attack Someday came suddenly comes to mind as similar. and couldn't agree more. I think a lot of these songs were a real step forward.
Great point about the lack of choruses! I think a lot of these bands were progressive and arty by accident- because they were kids who had no idea how to write songs, so they just strung together a bunch of parts that had nothing to do with each other.
Exactly the sort of patronizing, ignorant statement I'd expect from a businessman wannabe who's never created music in any capacity and only leeches off bands. "they were dumb kids who lucked into it" What a tone deaf thing to say.
One thing you do that I love is you not only accurately document a band’s career, but you pause to review each album individually. That has helped me to find appropriation for bands who I never got into back in the day, in real time.
Bro you finally did it! I lived through this whole era of Woe, Is Me I was a super fan of this band up until Tyler, Ben & Cory left. I just felt like it wasn't the same when Vengeance came out but I did enjoy the song though. I only saw WIM live once and that was the summer of 2010 and Number[s] wasn't even out yet and it was the original lineup as well. some fun facts: in the opening track of Numbers[s] the song On Veiled Men has a line that says "for these hands like houses we'll protect you from this storm" which is a shoutout to the band Hands like Houses. Emarosa, Woe, Is Me & Hands Like Houses were all recording music at Chango Studios at the same time which is how Jonny Craig had vocal features on the songs Desolate, The Conductor & Our Number[s] by Woe, Is Me. Tyler Carter & Jonny Craig have a vocal feature on the song Lion Skin by Hands Like Houses. The three albums that were being recording simultaneously were the following: Emarosa - self titled (2010) Woe, Is Me - Number[s] (2010) Hands Like Houses - Ground Dweller (2012) EDIT: The reason why bands like Of Mice & Men and Woe, Is Me were able to get signed so quickly was due to both bands having members that were previously in bands that were signed to a record label. So pretty much they're already on a contract agreement with Rise so they have to fulfill the rest of the contract or possibly face legal consequences. That's why we saw so many ex-members of bands start a new project when they left whatever band they were in during the 2010s.
I never really got into Woe is Me but Issues definitely holds a special place in my heart! Sky was always so nice and they just had a unique sound. Their shows were always fun. My friend and I have matching black diamond tattoos inspired by their black diamonds EP🖤
I got to meet woe is me in 2011 but I didn’t meet issues til 2016 I think it was (after loving them for years) and you are so right. Sky was definitely the nicest person ever, Tyler following sky for most nice lol
I'm glad you mentioned the absence of choruses on Number[s], first time I see someone else talk about it. The only repeating part I can think of is the "you're too far out, to swim your way in" on Hell or High Water. Tim Sherrill's lead guitar work is also impressive, it sucks that there is very little clear footage of him playing the tapping parts, as far as I know, none of his successors ever played them live. You can also clearly tell that the guitar parts got a lot simpler when Andrew joined. Ben's low screams deserve a mention too, they really added to their set back in the day. In fact I'm pretty sure his keyboard was just a stage prop, all he'd really do live was backup screaming.
What do you mean by tapping parts? Also, yeah they lost two key players in the band early on with those two. Very underrated but important to the original, industrial sound of what was Woe, Is Me. The album definitely feels like one long song. In a way, kind of like a fluid conceptual album without one single theme.
@@ReanuKeaves1 Tim has some pretty intricate lead guitar parts on the album (not quite DGD level, but still, they're pretty cool), and some of them are tapped, like on 2 parts of Delinquents. In case you don't know, tapping is a guitar technique where the guitarist has both hands on the fingerboard and thus doesn't strum the strings. And yeah, I do feel like it could've been one long song, some of the tracks even segue into each other. They're also all in the same key, except for the last one.
Thank for doing this Woe Is Me/Issues story! A band I think that would be interesting to cover is Broadway. They’re super underrated and could’ve been up there with SWS and PTV.
Number(s) will go down as one of the best metalcore albums when you or people like myself reflect on those days. 10/10 absolutely beautiful front to back. And the transitions? *chefs kiss* I wish Tyler wasn't a POS and the band got along so that we could actually see a reunion. Forever living on in memory
I remember woe is me added me on MySpace way back in the day and I was excited to show the homies this new band. We watched them grow and get signed to rise and we knew they would come to our city because most rise records artist do and Michael bohn recognized us there out of everybody because we had made a video smoking to 1 of their songs ft Johnny Craig and the band was super cool. Fast forward we went to 2011 Warped tour and Tyler saw us and came up to us asking “wheres the weed at” and we went and smoked him out haha good times.
I remember hearing rumors of how controlling Austin was and how many conflicts there was in the band. Thanks for doing this video, I was super excited to see you covering it :)
Dude this is sick!! I have a funny story about Kevin also. I live north of Atlanta and right after woe is me split up, I saw Kevin working at a Polo Ralph Lauren store at a local outlet mall. I had to do a double take and was like, is that the guitarist from woe is me??? lol sure enough it was him. My girlfriend at the time even had a woe is me t shirt on. Was definitely shocking to see him working at the mall.
Papa Cozy, Pleassssee can we put A Skylit Drive on the short list of video topics? Jordan is a true OG and with the reformation and all of the drama surrounding it, I think a video would be interesting. Love you and your channel!
I met Tyler in 2019 and we talked about why Number[s] had no choruses. He said that a certain member of the band (from Of Machines) hated choruses and said great music does not need a chorus. Also Tyler has a Number[s] tattoo behind his right ear.
Michael has the same tattoo. They might all have it actually. I used to think it was weird that the bands drummer was always front and center in their photoshoots, then the splits happened and it made sense. Lol
@@saviorofs0ng I'm sure you'll understand more if you watch all 3 videos Cozy puts out. Basically their drummer Austin (from Of Machines) was very..."involved" with the direction of the band and their music, so much so that almost the entire band quit and started a new band, which he then wrote an entire album about before then getting kicked out of Woe is Me by his new bandmates for being so controlling. Most bands have the vocalist[s] in the front of their photoshoots because they're the "face" of the band, hence "frontman". Austin being in front of everyone else basically implies that he's the face of the band, which isn't usually the case for a drummer.
Ignoring the inner turmoil of this band and Tyler Carter being a groomer, I still play Number[s] on the reg. Just Great songs that bring back so many memories.
15:55 without even looking at the screen, I knew Tyler wrote that. If you pay attention to his interviews and other promos he’s done, you start to see more and more signs of disillusion and “savior” complex grow over time
The WIM dudes as well as the dudes in ISSUES are good friends of mine. They were actually on their way to my house when the situation occurred that the song "King of Amarillo" was written about. I know all the dirty deets.😬
Number[s] holds a special place in my heart. Tyler's R&B vocals merged the music I grew up with and the music I was choosing to listen to. My anecdote about WIM is seeing them at Warped Tour in Orlando 2011. Legit the day after, WIM cancelled the rest of their shows on the tour. Little did I know I'd see the last WIM show with Tyler. Shame how his story turns out in the end.
Tyler Carter and Jonny Craig were on top of this scene because every kid used autotune for cleans and the robotic voice got old - people will naturally gravitate to actual talent and skill
Man, I had just started getting into live music around 2011 and remember that warped tour so well. That was an amazing summer for me, and Woe, Is Me got me into a lot of other bands and broadend my tastes. I don't know if I would like a lot of the music I do now without them. Issues too. Despite all the drama with Tyler and the bands I still love all of this music. It's too bad the mighty ones have to fall, but my little scene emo boy heart will never die lmao.

I love this series that you do and I’m stoked for the next one. As a formal metal core kid, it’s so nostalgic and fulfilling to watch these videos. Keep up the great work.

@@ToTheWolvesTony Yup, it’s literal pop punk perfect. So is This Is A Stick Up. I’d even say Invicta is an amazing album, despite reactions. Not sure how well it aged with fans but I loved it from the beginning. Such an underrated band. Sucks they aren’t as active anymore. Think Invicta was the beginning of the end for them.
@@ReanuKeaves1 I really do not know of any fans of that band personally so glad to meet someone finally. That album along with the woe, is me #'s album and others at the time changed the game for me as far as music I listen for and what I like to hear in my ears. Before that it was simply the 60's-90's classics and whatever MTV was showing. Never would've picked up a metal album if it wasn't for some of these bands along with the media outlets that popularized all of it at the time. Proud to say I'll always be a scene kid/emo at heart.
Excellent work. Would love to see you breakdown the career of Broadway. You mentioned them a couple times throughout this video and it warmed my heart. They are my favorite post hardcore band
Really anticipating part 2. I didn’t learn about woe, is me until after Tyler crate had left & they released genesis. Going back I remember listening and loving Number[S] but wasn’t into issues initially. That took me a bit but once I heard the debut self titled I loved them. These guys were something unique
Honestly, I'm so happy that you do these . Thought it was kinda silly. At first, you broke down things like this .. yet I really credit you now & love the content. It's always a good listen & watch ! Thank you

this channel is a public service! i love the cozy representative
Funny little memory of mine is being fresh out of high school and one of my friends was dating their tour manager at the time. We were hanging out on their bus outside the venue and I played my local post hardcore bands EP for them and Austin said it was trash lol. Good times. 😂
Oh shit that’s a fun memory. I recall a good friend of mine and I watching Tyler skateboard outside of warped tour one year while listening to a skylit drive play in the background lol. Was pretty cool
True, but i think Cory Ferris and Ben Ferris has a bigger impact on the Woe Is Me sound than Tim Sherrill has, just look at Vengeance and Fame > Demise, even without Tim Sherrill that song still has the "unique" sound Woe Is Me has, and when they left, the band just turned into a really boring chug chug Fest with generic br00tal breakdowns
dude, i would love to talk music with you. This is like my entire teenage experience lol 2009-2016 i was in a local maryland band and just followed the scene daily. This channel brings back so many memories i thought i forgot. Glad to see im not the only one who enjoys just talking music
I saw WIM at their only italian show ever, touring with A Skylit Drive in October 2011. Their album Number[s] is still a favorite of mine to this day. Great video, can't wait for part 2. Keep it up!
Thank you for doing this! I love that you use relive the moment vid footage because they were always at the same shows I was at back in the day and when it pops up in your videos im like the Leonardo Dicaprio pointing meme and saying "I was at that show!" Good times
Cozy i LOVE your work so much and i always learn a little bit of english everytime i watch the videos!!!! Im showing your channel to the guys here in Brazil!!!
The era of tappy slidey leads over a breakdown with high pitched singing was so hilariously and exactly replicated across the entire scene in this era. I didn't realize it back then. Looking back, it's hilarious.
Love your content and how you cover this area over music. I grew up listening to all the scene bands and was the typical scene kid, but I NEVER listened to woe is me lmao, and here I am at 22 honestly loving how heavy they are. I listen to mainly just tons of underground midwest emo, hardcore, screamo now but still got a soft spot for this genera!
PLEASE do Of Machines next if you could. it shouldnt be a super long video given their limited history lol, but 120% relevant to this video & a lot of other bands you've already covered as well.
Cheyene Stokes was like the cult favorite hardcore band in my neck of metro Atlanta. I remember learning they had a connection to Woe, Is Me and was floored.
Work has been really stressful this week, so seeing this video pop up on my subscription page was SUCH a nice surprise! :) Now to relax, enjoy my evening, and learn all about Woe Is Me!
Growing up I was a huge We Came As Romans fan and my first concert ever was Rock Yourself to Sleep Tour. Crazy to think how long ago that was and everything that’s happened since!
Fun fact: I went to middle and high school with a lot of the guys from WIM/ISSUES I saw A Path Less Traveled and Chayne Stokes so many times. Its wild how they blew up because literally no one in our scene liked them. Everyone thought both bands were super lame. L Anyway, they become Woe Is Me and are immediately on warped tour. I saw them as a local band literally once as Woe Is Me and thought "this is the same APLTish bullshit. Lame" but I was so wrong lol Those were good times tho. Those bands played so many great local shows back in the day. I saw Chayne Stokes and Attila play in my home town church ran venue called The Movement in Loganville, Georgia. I'm talking 2007 to 2010. Our little scene was actually producing huge stuff and we had no idea. Never imagined when I was 19/20 I'd be in my 30s watching this on RUclips.
Oh man, your channel reminds me how ridiculous this era was. So many bands back then would splinter into handfuls of other bands that putter out quietly. Of machines was being seen as the next big band up and coming for a minute there. It was them, inaviate, and the color morale. Then of machines and inaviate dissolved and the color morale had a sophomore slump. Anyways, of machines became woe is me, became issues and the bro version of woe is me. Tyler Carter did solo stuff, then issues. Woe is me died and favorite weapon and cursed sails were a thing for a short time. Issues kicked Mike and wild heart happened. Can't forget scouts solo stuff too. Seriously... What was this era of music? I mean, you said oceana which reminded me of their split and them becoming polyenzo, while the screamer formed decoder with the first versa emerge vocalist before they rebranded as lead hands and got sued into oblivion. Speaking of, that first versa singer would be an interesting video. Versa emerge, decoder, and makari all had him for a short time and it seemed to be drama. Haha
Woe Is Me is a lot like Attack Attack in that way. Austin got kicked out, started Of Mice & Men, Shayley left them and started Dayshell. Then Johnny Franck left and started The March Ahead and later Bilmuri. Then Attack Attack broke up, Caleb started Beartooth, the Andrews started Nativ Then brought back AA a year or two ago.
I must say I genuinely love your videos. Takes me back to the bands I was OBSESSED with back in the day. I love going back and listening to albums I would play front to back. Keep these videos coming love ya and rad facial hair

I love this series that you do and I’m stoked for the next one. As a formal metal core kid, it’s so nostalgic and fulfilling to watch these videos. Keep up the great work.
Woe is backkk
Yesssssss!!! Cozy listens to the little people!!! You got on it ASAP since the last video. One of my current favorite RUclipsrs. Always takes me back brother. Keep up the grind!
My next request is Hit The Lights!
i love hit the lights super underrated!!!
Skip school start fights literally one of my favorite albums ever
@@ToTheWolvesTony Yup, it’s literal pop punk perfect. So is This Is A Stick Up. I’d even say Invicta is an amazing album, despite reactions. Not sure how well it aged with fans but I loved it from the beginning. Such an underrated band. Sucks they aren’t as active anymore. Think Invicta was the beginning of the end for them.
@@ToTheWolvesTony dude every song is so good on that album
@@ReanuKeaves1 I really do not know of any fans of that band personally so glad to meet someone finally. That album along with the woe, is me #'s album and others at the time changed the game for me as far as music I listen for and what I like to hear in my ears. Before that it was simply the 60's-90's classics and whatever MTV was showing. Never would've picked up a metal album if it wasn't for some of these bands along with the media outlets that popularized all of it at the time. Proud to say I'll always be a scene kid/emo at heart.
Bunch of nostalgia from this. Thank you!
I always loved Of Machines. Only got to see them live once. It would be cool to see you make a video on them
Can’t wait to watch this! You should do one on Enter Shikari 😁
As well as I wrestled a bear once, Of machines, alexisonfire, etc
OMG YES!!!!!!
@@gengashaunt3322 iwabo was so huge in its hay day
@@gengashaunt3322 can’t forget my favorite color either Dallas Green❤
One hit wonders 😳
Excellent work. Would love to see you breakdown the career of Broadway. You mentioned them a couple times throughout this video and it warmed my heart. They are my favorite post hardcore band
I've been WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO MAKE THIS VIDEO! YES! FINALLY!
I absolutely loved Of Machines and Woe is Me at the same time and had no idea they were so similar, lineup-wise
Was your friend also just out of high school? Cause in that case yuck. Scene sicko strikes again.
@@neighborhoodmusicsnob5517 nah she was 20 and he was like 22 or 23.
The impact this band had on me truly can not be understated. Keep up the good work, man. Looking forward to the follow ups.
Numbers is an incredible album and their guitarist was Tim Sherrill was a big part of that.
True, but i think Cory Ferris and Ben Ferris has a bigger impact on the Woe Is Me sound than Tim Sherrill has, just look at Vengeance and Fame > Demise, even without Tim Sherrill that song still has the "unique" sound Woe Is Me has, and when they left, the band just turned into a really boring chug chug Fest with generic br00tal breakdowns
dude. it's the myspace screenshots that make this for me
dude, i would love to talk music with you.
Keep it up!
This is one of my favourite music channels. Keep going dude!
The boy Cozy! Giving the fans what they need!
Just finished it bro. Fantastic job!
Been waiting for this 🙏
I'm from San Antonio, TX.
Now and days, The White Rabbit Venue is now called the Paper Tiger
Yes! Excited to watch this one, I didn't really listen to Woe Is Me until well after Issues started so I'm stoked for the Cozy deep dive on them.
Thank you for doing this! I love that you use relive the moment vid footage because they were always at the same shows I was at back in the day and when it pops up in your videos im like the Leonardo Dicaprio pointing meme and saying "I was at that show!" Good times
Yet another banger
Yet another banger from The Cozy Representative
Omfg ! This is an amazing find! One of my favorite bands ever
2011 Warped Tour was so fun, I’ll never forget seeing them live (Also unreal job on these videos man, keep them coming!)
Great work as always! Woe, Is Me was really something special. looking forward to part 2 & 3
Before Woe was Cheyene Stokes. From ATL, GA. They stayed at my house and played a show with my old band The Summer Arrival.
Cozy i LOVE your work so much and i always learn a little bit of english everytime i watch the videos!!!! Im showing your channel to the guys here in Brazil!!!
Duuuuuuude! YESSSSSSS been waiting for this one!!!
Didn't mention the little Coheed bit from the acoustic Desolate clip. Also "what's up I'm Tyler... Carter?"
The era of tappy slidey leads over a breakdown with high pitched singing was so hilariously and exactly replicated across the entire scene in this era. I didn't realize it back then. Looking back, it's hilarious.
been waiting for this one!! numbers is prob still my most played album (even now)
Damn I've been waiting for this one for so long! Thank you Julian!!
Everything from both these bands had me hooked back in the day. Ahhhhhhhhhh i'm so hungry for part 2 now! Just subscribed.
Interesting !
I never got into Woe Is Me, but I love Issues 🙌🙌
Love your content and how you cover this area over music. I grew up listening to all the scene bands and was the typical scene kid, but I NEVER listened to woe is me lmao, and here I am at 22 honestly loving how heavy they are. I listen to mainly just tons of underground midwest emo, hardcore, screamo now but still got a soft spot for this genera!
I’ve never clicked on a video so fast as I did with this. Greeting from South America Cozy!
PLEASE do Of Machines next if you could. it shouldnt be a super long video given their limited history lol, but 120% relevant to this video & a lot of other bands you've already covered as well.
Looking forward to the part 2. This is a nice trip down memory lane.
Anyway, they become Woe Is Me and are immediately on warped tour. I saw them as a local band literally once as Woe Is Me and thought "this is the same APLTish bullshit. Lame" but I was so wrong lol
Those were good times tho. Those bands played so many great local shows back in the day. I saw Chayne Stokes and Attila play in my home town church ran venue called The Movement in Loganville, Georgia. I'm talking 2007 to 2010. Our little scene was actually producing huge stuff and we had no idea. Never imagined when I was 19/20 I'd be in my 30s watching this on RUclips.
i saw the thumbnail and clicked instantly. love your deep dives .
Always a good day, when we get a Cozy video ♥️
One of my favorite series you’ve done ✅
These guys were HYPE when they popped up. Everyone was copying their open string breakdowns when Numbers came out😅
I saw Cheyne Stokes wayyyyy back in the day. Crazy all the drama that happened in the future.
I love your content brother. Brings me back to high school days. keep up the good work Savant of my teen years.
I requested this video since the Jonny Craig days, I’m so excited 😭🖤
That would be amazing to hear about the story of Of Machines! No one in RUclips did it
Hey Cozy, I interviewed Hance about 2 years ago. We had touched upon the beef between WIM and Issues. If you want the wav file let me know!
I just discovered your channel! I’ve always wondered what happened to this band!!! I was huge fan back in the day! My emo days good times! I subscribed &+ will watch the other 2 parts!
