In March 2022, Russia did the unthinkable: Eight years after the first Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2014, thousands of Russian troops crossed the border as Vladimir Putin carried out his long-standing threat to invade the country again. Chernobyl, home to the world’s most notorious nuclear power station, was captured and hundreds of people were trapped. Then Russian troops occupying the area began to withdraw. Now, more than two years since the war began, Carte Blanche goes inside the exclusion zone to examine why keeping Chernobyl out of Russian hands was critical to Ukraine’s fightback.

I don’t understand why South Africans are getting so riled up. I feel like a missed the memo or smt but I didn't because the USSR is known to have helped freedom fighters during apartheid. YA'LL missed the memo. If smt goes down in Chernobyl, the effects can reach as far as the USA, if not further. It takes one nuclear tragedy to effect multiple countries. It's the closest thing we see to apocalypse. The stuff of nightmares. And it's fascinating. That's my take. Carte Blanche is firstly and foremost entertainment, and sometimes guised as investigative journalism.
It's a pity the video is so short. There are so many videos on RUclips about Chernobyl and it's incredibly hard to take in the scale of the disaster and how it's still treated today.
Go watch the HBO Chernobyl series. Well worth the watch if you want to see what happened.

I appreciate Carte Blanche stating that theirs was a sponsored by Ukrainian media bluh bluh. Anything that follows from then on is sponsored narrative. That is to be expected. There's lots that I will have chest pains about, this sponsored, one sided one isn't one of them.

@@DaSnowFangs as a general principle, we must consume a fair amount of news with skepticism. Starting point with this one is what is declared upfront by Carte Blanche, that they were invited to Ukraine by, Ukraine 'media'. This is on the back of war between Ukraine and Russia. Everything we are hearing here of alleged Russian transgression is from Ukraine 'media'. Very much a one sided affair with no effort by Cart Blanche to balance this story by seeking commentary from ones accused of 'aggression'.
Then there's Chernobyl nuclear accident. This isn't a vaccum. ANC led govt is planning as part of SA's energy mix is to have more power gen from nuclear. It is common cause that there's well funded green energy agenda in SA that wants to croud out whatever energy it deems not green, and this Chernobyl nuclear disaster fits perfectly onto dangers of nuclear, solidifying their case. Then there's issue of SA's historical ties with Russia. History that goes back to apartheid SA with SA's liberation movements getting support from Soviet Union (now loosely called Russia). History of apartheid govt getting support from western countries as West waged cold war against communism, and black bodies in SA and elsewhere being collateral damage. A history that some of us are conscious of, that led to dissolving of Soviet Union.
So I as black South African in light of what I've enunciated am skeptical when Carte Blanche airs this episode on chernobyl disaster on the back of Russia Ukraine war (and Russian is portrayed a villain).
I like Carte Blanche. It's one of the best investigative journalist driven programmes South Africa has.
This episode however is more of some sponsored programme, that in the light of the geo politics in the said conflict zone with its ramification in South Africa is sponsored propaganda.

Modern nuclear is different.
You can have CO2 neutral Energy with stability and less load shedding... and booming Industry, after a while with more prosperity ( if You can end the Corruption ) and more investments and after build up the Infrastructure, Education, Health System you will see a massive decrease of Crime and ZA is again one of the most beautiful Countries in the World... I love 2 be there, like 2 travel around... the People, the hospitality, the Culture ( all the People no matter what Colour ) the Nature... also under Water, the Food...

More power is fine, but large parts of Gauteng that i know of, are suffering with massive infrastructure collapse leading to weeks of no power. This isnt to say how far this problem goes, probably well beyond Gauteng. Its one thing to make power, another to get it to people.
I don't think we actually have that much to worry about. It's been about 40 years since, and they've updated knowledge, safety regulations, and design. Plus, we're one of the few countries that are, at least for now, the least exposed to natural disasters. That is something that gives me concern. We're having way more and more flooding and disastrous storms...
That was an incredable video! The insight was amazing. As somone who has always been facinated by the Chernobyl disaster it was amazing to see details of the plant. But the destruction that was left was shocking! as the people working wanted to keep the world safe. And yet had their livelyhoods destroyed.

It's really not that difficult. Russia illegally invaded Ukrainiane (again) in 2022. They said they wouldn't and they did. 100s of thousands of people have died, mainly Russian and millions displaced. None of this would have happened if Russia hadn't illegally invaded. There is no need for right of reply, especially given Russia is a country with a non-existent independent press.

Im very irritated about this Video... Tschernobyl is a hotspot for Visitors... Reactors ( incl Staff ) was working there after the Katastrophe... a lot of People still living in the " hot Zone " until now I liked every Documentary... but this one im not agree... and i grow up and still spend min 9 Month in the fall out Zone in Germany... Ukraine broke the Minsk agreement.
They are lucky the Russians only destroyed equipment that will assist Ukraine in making weapons.
This is an absolute false report from the beginning to the end! I lived there and have relatives and friends in Kharkiv, Odessa and Sevastopol in Crimea. The sentiment of thousands Ukrainians have changed after Russia stopped the offensive in Kiev when Zelensky was "signing" Minsk agreements. Today Russia controls the plant whilst Ukraine tried to attack the site many times..

The plant that the ukrainians have been attacking is the ZNPP in the south of Central Ukraine, not Chernobyl former power plant (north east of Kiev)

Facts please: 1986, for sure Apartheid propaganda covered this event. 1991 USSR collapsed and broke apart. 1994 ANC formed the Government of South Africa. I understand the gratitude you have to the USSR for the assistance it gave the Struggle for Democracy. The USSR no longer exists. We now have to accept reality as it is now. The past is gone. I don't think it's wise to 'turn off' M-Net because they covered a story that began in 1986, and became news again in 2022 under completely different circumstances. One thing this report is not, and that is Apartheid propaganda.
