In the Eastern Cape, thousands suffer from severe malnutrition. It’s a condition that has led to the deaths of at least seven children in the province, and a crisis that requires significant funding and political will to resolve. But in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, home to one of the province’s biggest cities, the priority seems to be multi-million rand vanity projects that have become a financial drain on the municipality’s coffers. Despite being cash-strapped, the municipality established a development agency tasked with boosting tourism and economic development; an agency that is now cashing in on major projects funded by the municipality and its ratepayers. In East London, what should’ve been a world-class beachfront upgrade has disintegrated into nothing more than a glorified “stoep”, while the bill for the Waterworld Fun Park revamp has ballooned to an eye-watering R120 million. Carte Blanche investigates why an entity with a poor track record for delivery is still in business.

If you vote for ANC this year... it's your fault that the country is like this
you took the words right out of my mouth😄
buh-bu-bu-buh i-h-i-i-ts app-papartheids fault!
What is amazing to me is that judging by the polls, over 40-45% of the country will still vote for ANC in the upcoming elections.
@@sizwemlangeni9158 that is the sad part. One would expect them to do far far worse.
💯
You are the only ones covering real life problems faced by South Africans 🙏🏽 thank you...
I mean the only one. I've been telling people if you want to know about what's happening in South Africa this is the channel
My Brother but what do you say when people become numb to Corruption, No more shame
Theres a kulid on my Stoep!! 😂🤣
They should play Carte Blanche on open tv. Mnet is expensive 😢
Please never stop your important work in EC Carte Blanche. We need the watch dog here in EC.
As a South African watching these from overseas, I can't thank Carte Blanche enough for their coverage. There is so much work to do. My family and I will be returning to play our part.
SA need u, appreciation in advance!....thanks CB!
Thank you so much. We need to save our country.
4:25 That "eh let me go"😂😂
😅😅
I lived in EL for 37 years . I left for the UK 4 years ago . I watched the City decline at an accelerated rate before I left in 2019 . It was the most beautiful City I had ever seen when I arrived there in 1981
The UK is on its way to get allot worse
If only the today's politicians can stop fooling around and treat tax as for the people not boycotts
My father once told me that when he visited someone's house, on their coffee table was an old picture book named "20 of the world's most beautiful cities" (could have been 10 - all I remember was that it wasn't many cities) and surprisingly Pietermaritzburg was one of them. The book must have been from the late 70's to mid 80's.
💔 ... As fellow Port Rexian I concur with you East London was truly a beautiful place.
And I'm still staying here 45 years later
i lived in East London from 1994 to 2003 and East London was a beautiful set city almost mystical but from this it looks like its owning the title of slum town and is heart breaking. ANC has been a disservice to the people of East London and Eastern Cape at large.
If you see it now 😢.
It breaks my heart , and the man had the audacity to say that all is going well.
It's not an isolated picture.
Voetsek useless ANC!!! We need leaders with higher standards.
The electorate can only blame themselves. Can the locals not see the cANCer that is the ANC. Absolute destruction and ineptitude wherever they govern. Sickening, but not at all surprising. You get what you vote for!
The black majority is making no difference between what is wrong and right. Mealie meal is enough for them to give their votes to the ANC
Bantu Holamisa is the right guy.
So sad, but unfortunately this is the story of almost every city in South Africa 🇿🇦
No city is immune to this, Durban and Joburg are worse!
cape town is beautiful, you can walk around freely in CBD
Welcome to East London. We are corrupt and a lot of our city is run down, BUT we have a very nice fancy beach stoep 😎👌🏻
I feel the reporter's grief. Revisiting your home town to find it so much worse doesn't make you angry. It's just sad.
💔💔💔
Sad to say , I can imagine how he felt . I hated to go visit my mother because then we needed to drive through our town and it made me so depressed. All over and everywhere everything is just falling apart. Nobody gets to be held responsible anymore .
I can relate to Govan East London is my hometown as well and honestly hurts seeing it in the condition its in. 💔😪💔😪
Every town is stripped by the mob. Stilfontein a quiet mine town years ago look terrible.. rugby stadium, sport grounds completly destroyed 😡
The ANC’s betrayal of the People is one of the greatest tragedies ever
My heart bleeds for my beloved eastern cape ❤
Tears falling into the soil of what could have been!
You know it's bad if even the EFF councillor is making sense
Hahahahaha I was also suprised.... It would be funny if the joke wasnt on us!
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Across the country...not just Buffalo City
I left my hometown of 29 years in 2004, Recently returned after 17 years abroad. It is undescribable the shock of the decay. No more roads, The cemetary is a dumping site, No water. I couldn't believe my eyes. Heartbroken for my Country. There's nothing left. Even if we get rid of ANC it may already be too late for my beloved Country
Whole of South Africa these thugs have plundered.what ever they put their paws on turns to sewage
It’s too late if you live abroad. But for local it simply can never be too late.
Spot on, it will take decades to fix and that is of the ANC gets out, which they won't.
Agreed it takes way longer to fix something than to break it and we are talking 3 decades of destruction.....so far
@@wvbosch
Sad but true
I left East London 26 years ago ,2021 me and my family went visiting extended family to find the drinking water was contaminated, the roads is undriveable and believe you me no accountability from the ANC
I still say i wish Carte blanche was on sabc 1 so that amc supporters can see what Ezika Tambo are doing,..... poor leadership madoda.. another brilliant delivery by Govan
Exactly! But they’ll never put it because they know ANC supporters stay glued on SABC 1
You forgot the pool in Mdantsane it’s over 30 years in construction. We use to swim in it during my lower primary days back in 1994…
"the head of communication has already given you beautiful answers" - CEO 🤣🤣🤣🤣💔💔💔💔
So sad to see this beautiful country in a steep decline .
I revisited Phuthaditjhaba (QwaQwa) after only after 6 years after I moved to PTA. Goodness the destruction caused by the ANC cadres is beyond imaginable. I understand how you feel.
I agree with u 100%. I grew up in qwaqwa, that place had stadiums, townhalls, factories and decent roads. The anc neglected & missed used funds, now nyaope boys r stripping everything without consequences. No rule of law. This is the new dawn Ramaphosa was talking abt.
@@mohautshepomosia155 absolutely brother. It's really sad.
I’m from qwaqwa, it’s getting worse as years go by
This unfortunately does not reach the majority of supporters. The rulers receive most of their votes from a majority who are kept in the dark, kept uneducated and thus easily mislead. Carte Blanche attracts an educated audience. I regret having to leave East London, but what I don't miss is the blind arrogance perfectly depicted by that chap with a beautiful sea view in this video.
They still have eyes to see, ever rising costs of food and services with ever dropping them bank account balances. They have no excuse.
"I will give it 7 out of 10" - BCMDA Spokesperson
ANC clowns are to blame and the supporters.
Wait, wait, did ANC went there take everything or community went take everything. Communities please stop vandalising your own infrastructure start taking responsibility and protect your community and infrastructure.
@@Jay-rd3hn where is the police the ANC are in charge of ...and yes i agree the anc supporters are to blame also they stole everything working also.
@@BrettLaas do you even know what apartheid and colonisation did to South Africa 🇿🇦…you know nothing!!!
The ANC is the symptom, the ANC voters are the problem.
@Jay-rd3hn
Police is meant to make sure infrastructure is not vandalized who controls SAPS ? ANC
The amount of tax payers money collected vs. the amount spend on infrastructure might exceed 1% ,
We need a "Bee Keeper"
We had a John Wick in mamalodi… i think the bee keeper will also be sufficient.
The saddest thing that's going to happen is when the people of Eastern Cape make sure the ANC remains in power on the 29 of May! ANC should be ashamed of themselves for even failing the country.
😔😭😭this is so sad. Every town in SA is like this. Durban & JHB is worse. No accountability and consequences.
No, here in the Cape, our towns and cities are still beautiful.
@wlk2408 😂😂you know you're not telling the whole truth... Shack Capitol
@@curiousk4083 What city or town got worse since the end of Apartheid in the Cape? Evidence will be nice.
@wlk2408 All including CT as black people in CT still live in shacks. eNyanga, eKhayalisha, kwaLanga etc. CT is the best reflection of racist province is SA.
You should visit the Western Cape, it's haven, our last hope in the country.
If this makes you cry, then my friend, you haven't been to Mafikeng.
Go ile hela yala ka Mahikeng tlhe.
I went to school in Mafikinig. I shocked TO my core. Everything in South Africa looks like an informal settlement with a spaza shop.
lol haha 🤣😅Im not laughing!
I always say if the ANC fail in small town like Mafikeng what makes all of us think that they can run the whole country. They can't even do anything in Lichtemburg.
Cry my beloved country! Ntate Manyope once warned us about this ANC, did we ever listened? This looks like the norm in all ANC run municipalities. Vote this party out, DA is doing better than this nonsense ANC
Journalism at its best! Siyabonga😊
Matriculated there in 1976. Went back for Ironman 70.3 three years ago. Shocking neglect
Besides wasting tax payers' money, it's all about greed, theft and neverending corruption! Shame on you ANC!!! You've succeeded in bringing a once beautiful country, infrastructure and economy to its knees!!!
As always, excellent reporting Carte Blanche!
Many cities are being stripped like this across South Africa. It's just sad and only a few people care.
Voetsek ANC!
That CEO rubbing the shoulder of the presenter. So disrespectful.
Brilliant reporting! Thank you from Boston
"The contractor told us they were 95% complete." Uhm ... how about checking for yourself?
ANC has failed us . Our province used to be so beautiful and safe when I was growing up in the late 90s/ early 2000s
Very true reflection of what is happening there. I was in eMonti, eQonce, eCawa & eRhini December 2023 - very pathetic state of affairs as far as public infrastructure is concerned.
Proudly brought to you by the ANC! What is even worse is the fact that the ANC is due to receive 40% of the vote.
A large contingent of the population effectively endorses the rot.
Pops left us with a bar at the end there
The only thing cherished by politicians is money. 😮
Another great South African success story !
From just looking at the old Architecture I'm in awe.
Can you please visit the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality guys, I love your work and I am so happy that our people are seeing such before 29 May 2024.
Everywhere the DA governs things are just better. Not perfect.. just better.
Can you imagine how much better they could be without a hostile national government? The DA is doing a lot with very little.
People complain that the DA doesn't do enough, ignoring the fiscal constraints and grossly incompetent national government that put the brakes on everything that could liberate this economy.
I agree. People are searching for 'The Perfect Party' but there are no such thing as perfect but watching this I can say we are a little better off in the Western Cape.
Have you the CBD in Capetown.....dude the city is not falling apart.....it already has😅....go check, see for yourself
@b-the-creativeartist5825 Yes, I've lived in capetown cbd for 3 years. It's by far better than any other city in south africa. You can point out all the flaws in DA run areas as long as you remember to hold other political parties to the same standard. These strawman double standards wont work here bud. We know the DA is not perfect but where they govern they do it better than other political parties.
Brilliant coverage of the tragic state of affairs. Great story telling.
Ec is dead from north part in Mbizana all the way down with special thanks to ANC comrades.
It’s so sad to see such a beautiful country being brought to it’s knees 💔
"Even that camera to got there we gonna take it "😂
Apartheid was bad but daam i cant belive that people wernt better off back then than they are now
I thought my gran was mad when she warned me of this type of thing happening in the future. That was nearly 30 years ago.
Being black I doubt it was better back then. I wouldn't be an engineer today. Let's put things in perspective
So u saying there weren't any black engineers Pre 94 or are u saying ur family part of the thief so u could afford it?@@lukealadeen7836
@@lukealadeen7836were there no black engineers Pre 94
@@anthony58936 no there wasn't any. The field was completely closed off to black people. In fact there were very few professions that black people could study for.
Great coverage Govan. Hopefully there will be follow ups. The contentment with subpar delivery is appalling.
😪... This really hit close to home for me... The ANC has truly ruined Buffalo City... I'm from East London the place where there are war torn buildings is Quigney a Suburb of East London. Honestly watching this as a person who grew up in East London broke my heart. Waterworld was every child's dream two decades ago just like the ice rink that burnt down in 2005.
Thanks ANC
You should see what's left of the roads in (what used to be beautiful) Gonubie. Kids can't even pass their drivers tests because they have to choose between damaging their vehicle or veering around and away from the impossible number of mammoth potholes (which is apparently not allowed). I could not believe when I saw the huge display of expensive Christmas lights put up by BC municipality in East London this last festive season - how on earth is there money for THAT? It's heartbreaking what's happening to our beautiful Eastern Cape - a treasure that should be protected for all South Africans. So so much potential for economic growth there, but that is impossible with no infrastructure!
Same! The Christmas display on the beach front SHOCKED me! It looked like a movie in Europe 😂👎🏿
Heart breaking and the idiots are proud of where we are...🤯 it's just shocking
That really is a "stoep"..... R100M for that?
Where is the braai.
I was born in EL and have some very fond memories of the city. Pity they can only be memories now...
It’s obviously not working. But what does that matter. Won’t change anything . CEO loves his salary
I was born and raised in East london, I remember how beautiful Quigney and Nahoon used to be, I've seen it deteriorate infront of my eyes , it breaks my heart because it had so much potential. To see people that are in high positions think that it's acceptable to manipulate the system and think they are still making a difference. It's pathetic and not acceptable. That project seriously could have not costed R100M. Something very fishy is going on here. CORRUPTION.
This hits hard when it's your country 😢 We really need to vote this party out. I don't care who runs the country as long as it is not anc.
Same here.
Thanks for going to EC please go to Mtata
NOTE: IF ANYONE DECIDES NOT TO VOTE, YOUR VOTE WILL AUTOMATICALLY GO TO THE ANC
Nonsense
I wish you could get these news to the youth
Nothing will come of this. Corruption will be it's down fall once again! Some will be making tons of money and pocket it!
Great journalism.
Well done carte blanche, you should also do a story on what the western cape is doing differently to the eastern cape, i live in eastern cape and visited the western cape a few times in the last few years and the difference is astounding.
It's almost impossible to believe.
The audacity to say, "We are comfortable "😂😂 is just demeaning and comes to show the real standards of our ANC government. Poor!!
CEO with sunnies on yooo😂😂😂🧐🧐
People remember to vote wisely u have to opportunity to make change in may ......for the better ...
Sies ANC
ANC your time is up!
It's happening everywhere no province or city is spared.
It's a planned destruction...
Welcome to BCM, where everyone passes the buck!
If you think East London is bad, Mthatha looks like a 3rd world hole, it's sad. Eastern Cape is supposed to be an ANC stronghold, yet the people here are the most abused.
"...now it feels like I'm in the Joburg CBD. It's not safe and the city seems to be rotting away."
A tale of the South African city.
Amazingly in other countries sites of historic symbolism are still well maintained centuries later, here the ANC only been in charge for over quarter century
The fact that the pavement had grass growing through it already sets the standard of work done at 1/10.... lol even Ayanda himself responding to the interview in that manner shows that he's looking out for himself. It really tells me that the terms and conditions of the contracts awarded are poorly designed, and there's no harsh punishment of doing projects of that magnitude, therefore guys can can do what they want and be "negotiated with".
@14:00 ''He dealt with you very well'' This guy is to nice when he interviews
At this point we need to stop blaming the ANC and start blaming the idiots that vote for them.
HM Pitje in Mamelodi a historical sports ground gone with the wind😢
"In office", NOT "in power". Love your work Carte Blanche
I think your content would reach a lot of people if it were to be put on other social media platforms too.
Spokesperson Samkelo, is doing what is needed to keep he's Job. Impressive. 😂
Shocking.
Why did they not check themselves on the Water Park supposedly being 95%... ????
Are we really surprised? This is a trademark of the ANC
😂😂😂😂😂😂lol
No one can save South Africa.
"The contractor told us it was 95%" bro's never heard of verification, audits or site visits. Someone could be tiling my bathroom and I'd at least stick my head in once in a while to see how things were going.
Shame eastern cape is worst in south africa government doesn't show care 😢
This is happening all over Ethekweni. The municipality is silent😢
Reflects the society..the people in the area.
You asked Why? The same reason Everyone knows about the Dollars in the Sofa and nothing is done about it!
This is sad, and ANC bet on the poor because they are the majority. It unfortunate that if the bet is so straight forward there is still a possibility for ANC to lead again. I wish we could be bankrupt completely before all our infrastructure is ashes. Money is created but man there are monuments you can rebuild once they are ashes they are gone forever. Now you have to build from scratch.
If you can see my hometown Mthatha... Its true when i say White Government was way better than our Government... All went worse when Mbeki left office
They pushed mbeki out because he didn't accept corruption. He was the last decent leader the anc had
But Mthatha was run by black government...
Mthata, East London, where all the tenders go to..... Lol you always see hawks driving around there wonder why that is......
@@sisekoqondazimasasakwe2597 Yes it was and ran well at the independent state... Remember that was way back in the days... In the 80s Mthatha was the clean town in the country... Yet there were white man assisting in water in some villages around... That's how I grew up
Blame the ANC
There is no hope for south africa sorry to tell you this , look in 20 years what its gone to now imagine in another 20 what its gona be like very sad
You cannot even blame ANC only but just the Aspect of Politics is the problem SA is experiencing right now. It's one of Africas richest but soon to be put to it's knees by these Politicians.
BEE at its best and ANC corruption
