Overlanding is where comfort meets the wild. It's a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.

Salut James. Moi aussi, j'ai un X-Trail de 310 000 km et je compte voyager en Europe avec ce véhicule. Economique (7,5 litres / 100 km) et fiable, très bon choix ! Bonne route ...

    Interesting!
    Same car, but
I have a really good inflatable tramping mattress which
    a) has a much lower profile i.e. more room between platform & roof
    b) is as comfortable as your mattress (possibly more as designed to be on hard lumpy ground?)
    c) can easily be put away inflated or deflated (depending on storage options
    d) is featherweight & more manoueverable
    e) is waterproof (see spare tyre challenges in the rain!)
I have an alumium camping kitchen table with undercupboards/mesh zip front & back access set up in back tied to car inside anchor points - can't use top in a low ceiling, but can store pillows, foldup seats etc on top, and plastc containers underneath, plus the cupboards are roomy for clothes & other gear. (I use packing "pods" so I can quickly pull out good clothes, walking clothes, hats & gloves, etc) without having to take out everything to find something.
My car comes with a false floor in the cargo area & a slide out drawer one side (cooking utensils etc) & cavity on the other - 2 burner stove awaiting a slide-out, but still good for travel storage until then.
I would also love the extra room of a van, BUT it is the comfy drive over several hours + 4wd that keeps me with the X-trail - explored adding a pop-top roof but it would have to be custom-made.
    Main disadvantages:
    a) I haven't overcome having access to the spare wheel if I have a puncture! The tyres are huge & v/heavy else I would explore adding it outside on the rear hatch? Or some fold-down rack on the roof??
    b) the need for an awning or tarp on the side doors when it is raining - more tricky keeping the inside dry with doors that open out!
Hope you have a good experience travelling with your X-Trail.

Kudos on your first video. Very thorough and insightful. I’ve got a 2004 x-trail and thinking of doing something similar. It’s a tossup between what you’ve done or a rooftop tent. Thanks for the detailed video, good luck with your travels

Great choice of car (I've owned my 2005 DCi Sport nearly 8 years now although haven't camped out in it yet) and a great camper set up too. Liking the wind deflectors and the insulated window shades. Good luck with the world travel and the youtube channel.

G'day from Downunda [Aus] James. Your 2006 Xtrail back seats go flat? My 2011 are about 45 degrees. The fridge plug is also on the left, with the bed on the left, the fridge will have to go on the right back. I was planning a Microwave, and a kettle, an a couple of lighting batteries charged by the alt and solar panels. I'm an o'night, 2 dayer or weakender😉 When did the Uk, chage to left hand drive? My Dad named his 1961 holden sedan Bertha. My Hi Ace was Bertina. My Iload was Gertie the Xtrail is Heapa [sh*t] but, then I'm 68. Not bad for a 'first' vid m8, you'l get better wid experience

Hoping your gas bottle didn’t leak. It really should be secured in a separate box with venting at the bottom out of your vehicle
