    !!! PLEASE READ BELOW !!!
    This is a re-upload/mirror from Jeremiah Johnson's original upload on April 25, 2017 which as of now is still on RUclips (link: • Video ). I normally do not re-upload/mirror stuff that is not taken down or is already uploaded to RUclips and is not only on some other website less people know about, besides realeasactivations also already re-uploaded this on their channel. But I decided to re-upload this anyway for the following reasons:
    ● The original video's title is really generic and somewhat vague (it is "Cable System Required EAS emergency test during matlock", in case the original upload gets taken down in the future)
    ● The description of the original video has a bunch of scammy looking random shortened links (though I doubt Jeremiah themself added those, their channel probably got hacked some point after they uploaded the video and the hacker did not take the videos down but edited the descriptions to advertise scammy stuff)
    ● The original upload is also missing some information such as the record date of the VHS tape it was ripped from and the cable company which I, along with my friend ‪@WildDiamond07‬, managed to finally find as a result of some researches we have been doing on the internet, mostly the FCC Cable Search form (more information below). Besides this, the comment section of the original upload contains some false assumptions regarding the date of the test (most people assumed this was from January 11, 2002 instead).
    Overall I just wanted to re-upload this video in a better shape with a better title and description compared to other uploads as this was one of the earliest EAS videos I've ever watched during early days of my interest back in 2018 and I just thought I should clear the confusion up from this legendary test.
    Q: So anyway, how are you so sure about xyz? Hasn't it already been proven that xyz is abc (etc.)
    A: This is going to be long. First off, let's begin with the cable company that likely issued the test. While the same headers ("ZCZC-EAN-RWT-039035+0015-0110650-CHEOHCAB") decode as an Emergency Action Notification Network (EAN) issued test, that is obviously false for a local Required Weekly Test issued for Cuyahoga County, Ohio. It must have been issued by the cable company itself, which would give us an EAS (Broadcast Station or Cable System) originator code. Due to the distortion and low quality sound of the SAME headers I believe it's just the quality of the audio causing decoder software to decode it incorrectly. Either that or this HollyAnne MIP-921 encoder + Idea/onics CG-1000 character generator unit screwed up and issued the wrong code, given that it also issued a second pair of End of Message tones near the end of the test with incorrect code ("HHHH" instead of "NNNN") this theory is pretty doable. And as for the cable company, it appears that "CHEOHCAB" is actually a valid sender ID style according to an Ohio EAS Plan from 2003. "CHE" being the code for the city the cable TV headend is located in (probably Cuyahoga Heights or Cleveland Heights, I'd say), "OH" for Ohio and "CAB" for Cablevision. While the said EAS plan does not list "CAB" as a valid cable company code, it appears that Adelphia Communications (which itself in turn got bought by Time Warner Cable in the area later) bought most Cablevision headends in Ohio on November 16, 2000, including the ones in Cuyahoga Heights and Cleveland Heights, making the cable company code "ADE" which the said plan does list as Adelphia. As for the date of the test, it is already known that the test occured at 1:50 AM EST on January 11st of a year (judging by the decoded SAME header), but SAME headers do not include the year. While Matlock (the television show the test interrupted) already finished airing by the time the EAS replaced it's predecessor, Emergency Broadcast System, I found out some national cable channels such as TBS and WGN America (now NewsNation) did re-runs of the show. After a research that took me an hour or two, I found the archives of the newspaper "The Lowell Ledger" in Michigan that had schedule lists for both channels (including archives between 1997 and 2000, which this test must have took place in judging by the date the Adelphia buyout happened and the sender ID). After checking the ones between 1997 and 2000, I found out WGN America was indeed supposed to (re-)air Matlock from 1 to 2 AM on January 11, 2000.
    So there you have it. Once again, credits to ‪@WildDiamond07‬ for helping me with this entire research. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask in the comments.
    NOTE: I won't hesitate to take this video down if Jeremiah Johnson requests me to do so as they are the original uploader.

    !!! READ THIS !!!
    UPDATE (APRIL 13, 2023):
    Over the time I've learned some of the things in the description are wrong. Also, Jeremiah's account has also been terminated, therefore the original upload is sadly no longer available. However I'm still keeping the original description for reasons.
    The following information is corrected in this comment:
    *The encoder is actually a HollyAnne HU-961 and not a MIP-921 or MIP-921e, unlike what I claimed in the description.
    *The incorrect EOM tones that decode "HHHH" instead of "NNNN" actually seem to be an intentional feature on HU-961 encoders that can be disabled.
    *The low audio quality of the tones seems to be because HU-961 originates/relays alerts at a lower audio quality compared to MIP units (8 kHz on MIP vs 5 kHz on HU)
    Thank you for reading the comment. I just wanted to address these misinformations while still keeping the original description for purposes.

      does the wrong decoding of the EOMS effect endecs on the receiving end, by struggling to conclude an EAS message, by not decoding “NNNN”

    • @luennix
      @luennix  7 месяцев назад +1

      @@EASWeather I don't think so, HU-961s transmit three correct EOMs decoding "NNNN" first, then three incorrect EOMs decoding "HHHH". So any encoder that monitors one would likely already deactivate by the first three correct pairs.
      Also, since the incorrect EOMs are supposedly a feature, it could possibly be for manual audio adjusting. Kind of similar to the processor lead on Sage EAS ENDECs.

    The Idea/Onics CG-1000 screen was used in the late 90s-early 2010s.

    Usually there’s 3 EOMS, same as the headers, but 6? That’s crazy

      That appears to be a feature with the encoder the Idea/onics CG here is hooked up to (HollyAnne HU-961) according to some other people in an EAS community I am also in, they are more knowledgeable with encoders as I don't physically own any.

      Unfortunately no, the company dissolved on August 31, 2020 according to the OpenCorporates listing for the company: opencorporates.com/companies/us_nd/0000008000
      Besides, a not good standing letter was also issued for the company on April 14, 2020 which is issued when a company is not active enough, meaning they have been inactive at least months prior April 14.

      Also, the only known character generator the company made, the CG-1000 (which is also the character generator this specific cable TV headend in the video used) was already abandoned by at least most cable companies by 2010-11, at least to my knowledge.

      @@luennix thats sad, but it makes more sense, most idea/onics eas videos i’ve seen look like they use very outdated technology

    • @luennix
      @luennix  Год назад +3

      @@MaggiePesky I believe the CG-1000A (which Idea/onics referred to as a "basic character generator" in their now defunct website and what I believe all Idea/onics cable systems we have footage from used) could only display two slides, making it seem really basic. There also was a CG-1000R variant (described as a "complete character generator", again by Idea/onics) and that likely had more capabilities. Unfortunately let alone the 1000R even the 1000A is very scarce to find second hand so likely no one can demonstrate it anytime soon, and we don't have footage.
