The Landport (Spanish: Puerta de Tierra) is a gate into the territory of Gibraltar. It was originally the only entrance to the fortification from the land and so was heavily fortified and guarded.
The tunnel to the gate inside the fortification.
After the territory was first captured from the Spanish in 1704, the British defended the Landport with twenty guns. The gate was subsequently defended by the Inundation - a flooded and fortified area of ground measuring about 200 yards (180 m) in length by about 60 yards (55 m) broad and was "nearly man-height" in depth. There were also obstacles in it such as chevaux de frise and metal hoops. There was also a moat covering the northern approach - the Landport Ditch. The ditch's defences included a palisade and a gunpowder mine which could be exploded beneath an assault. To cross these defences, there was a drawbridge which was pulled up at night. Tobacco smugglers would exit the gate at this time and lurk outside, waiting for an opportunity to cross the neutral ground into Spain.

Fascinating story. There's so much history about the Rock and Gibraltar that children don't hear about these days. Too many teachers are ashamed of our history, shame on them!

Such an interesting meeting with that gent - I'm sure if he were willing he has many a tale to tell about his life experiences - if you run into him again - please ask if he has the time to share more. You never know the histories within each human being you run into - and the older they are - the bigger the back catalogue. What a fellow - what a survivor - bless him.

Very very interesting looking historical tunnel located over in Gibraltar. But on another noting gosh what experiences Ernest went through! 😲. He really did have quite the story to share I must say 😲. Thanks Graham and Fiona for sharing this as I do really like history and am certainly always interested and fascinated by it. Do take care and many best wishes to you both 🙂.

@@Foxys-Collective-Videography thank you for your kind words. A prior post to me was just as thoughtful. This spring has brought my migraines (among other things) to the fore. So apologies my replies are not as expedient.
It was actually the Baron. I do listen to and support many in this community. Some regularly, others occasionally. Though I do subscribe as a show of support. Within reason.
A cell screen is small compounding the migraine. (A little play on words).
I prefer to listen. Especially on days like today. 🌧️ ☔ 🥶
Did I mention I live surrounded by trains. Rather historical significance. Then my whole life trains have been there. Literally and figuratively.
It's the reason the wind is so strong here some days. Iron Island they called it.
Perhaps there is something online about it.
      Wishing you a lovely Wednesday.

My lady Nadine, oh my goodness I feel ever so naughty and rude for taking so long responding to your kindly reply but thankyou so very very much for as always your lovingly strong set of kindness and lovely response my lady. Very many thanks indeed 🙂. I mean I do apologize if at any point I had inadvertently done anything intrusive to you as I only meant to kindly acknowledge you upon seeing you within Graham and Fiona's content aswell as on this relatively recent video of theirs I mean I really do apologize if I had done anything that could have been painfully intrusive to you my lady 😕. Oh Nadine poor you 😢. Oh Nadine I am so sorry lovely 😢. You poor thing, I am so sorry learning of the dreadful migraines took such an adverse tolling side effect that tumultuously hit you to a large extent I really do sympathize for you in a full thrive of empathy. Sending you all the healing hugs at every possible disposal to you though I do hope you eventually overcame everything. We all care enormously about yourself and your wonderful husband and daughter Nadine as I do too. So please don't worry if your reply wasn't as expedient as my reply to you recently was far too many weeks late 😕. There is certainly no need to worry my lovely lady. Its ok Nadine one can view ones channel at different rates it is certainly completely fine as we all like different things in life but it is lovely learning of the kindly contributions of yours that you provide towards other youtubers whenever viewing their content and making a comment or two or three on their videos and things 🙂. Only watch who you feel you want to that appeals more greatly to your interest Nadine, this would be my advice to anybody 🙂. You live surrounded by trains? Oh no I don't think I had the remotest of familiarity to this until recently Nadine no but how very very interesting learning of the fact that there is a surrounding of trains nearing your residual locality since seeing you saying and talking of it to me recently 🙂. But how very interesting and wonderful learning of this all from you 🙂. Thanks for telling this to me Nadine as this really did captivate me enormously with admirable interest. Very many thanks indeed for telling this to me 🙂. Sending you many great big hugs and kisses headed your way and please, Nadine, if you ever feel the need to talk about anything or need a shoulder to cry on you know you can always talk to me about things and I can always try and help you in every way possible. You will certainly always have a strong set of permissions for it 😊. Love you faithfully dearly lovely lovely lady Nadine 🥰😍😍🥰.
