    This is my first time seeing the actual innards of the ammo drum and that in itself is incredibly fascinating!

    These technicians are the USAF Armourers power to them. I was in the RAF as an Armourer working on the Harrier GR3 in the 70s and 80s. We were called Plumbers because our trade would be the one working on the turrets with hydraulics for power and also the Lewis gun which was cooled by water pipes, when it sprang a leek guess who they called. Yep the plumbers. Best years of my working life we changed jobs and a/c every three years we did notice the USAF Armourers got trained and staid doing the same job for years.
    Pass it on

      The Maverick AGM-65. Most A-10 kills have been with the Mav, not the gun. The A-10 is utterly useless unless you have air superiority and are fighting a primitive near tribal adversary. Against any sort of near peer Adversary, A-10s will be blow out of the sky before they can ever sight in the gun. This is the AF wants to get rid of them. They are useless.

      @TheDamnSpot 6 месяцев назад

      @@shooter7a If you are in the services or have been, you know there's a lot more to it than that. As with all multivariate problems, the truth is not even close to clear cut. The Wathog is very good at what it does. Whether there is still use for it on modern battlefields... I think clearly an argument could be made. I mean we're not done pissing off the Muslims, that's for sure. Not a lot of near peers in that group, wouldn't you agree?

    USA's old-style 20th Century Gatling Gun
    7 barrel
    low 4,200 rounds per minute
    600 rounds per minute per barrel
    10 rounds per second per barrel rotation
    USA hasn't improved it much
    in the 21st Century
    other's modern Gatling Guns
    have much higher rates of fire

    All this Gatling/ammo drum/linkless feed stuff started at summer's end in 1961. We weapons mechanics at Spangdahlem AFB in Germany knew that the brand new F-105D fighters coming to replace our trusty F-100s were going to be a big change for us. We were pretty much gobsmacked when we got a look at the complexity of the gunnery system, and then there was the bomb bay and bomb rack actuator that could throw a 2,000 lb bomb clear of the airplane at 600 mph, just like an empty beer bottle thrown from a speeding car. Being a totally new concept in gunnery, the linkless feed system was bound to have teething problems, and it did. Not only would the system jam when firing was attempted, it would jam when ammo was being loaded and sometimes even when the system was being slowly rotated for maintenance. Invariably with a jam there would be internal damage, and we quickly learned that the only effective fix was to remove the entire system--gun, ammo drum, transfer unit, exit unit, entry unit, and all the chutes and conveyer elements, all still holding ammunition, take it all to the shop, disassemble, inspect, and test every last part, make the necessary repairs and replacements, and reassemble it to put back in the airplane with timing pins in place. Many changes had to be made before the system became usable. If the work we did had not helped to uncover the problems, the F-105 would have been nearly defenseless when it was sent to Vietnam a few years later.

    Scariest gun in the world. 30mm depleted uranium rounds at 3900 rounds per minute. The enemy RUNS when they see the A-10, not because they are scared of the slow moving jet with poor maneuverability but because they know that jet has this gun and the pilots are surgical with it.

      Not going to happen. People overestimate AI too much to begin with - they still need input and instruction to work, and are anything but sentient-capable. There is no way in hell that such defective programs will be left to make judgements on their own on anything that involves risk to life or mission critical applications - only the most absolute fools among fools would be so foolhardy to even entertain the very idea of such utter folly.
