  • I've never seen a custom boss this difficult. It's awesome to see Ocarina of Time pushed to it's limits, and I can't wait to see what's in store for 2024 mods.
    This is a clip from my play-through of Dungeon Generator Beta (by Nokabure).

    Author of the romhack here. Great to see you giving this old beta a shot! and I read all the comment section to gather more feedback. Take in mind that this was made years ago when modding was in a stage where we could not use a real programming language, this boss was purely made in assembly so aesthetically its not as stunning as in other romhacks. I'm STILL working in this romhack and I hope I can finish it by 2024!
    The boss was infact designed to be nearly unbeatable hence the difficulty, in the final version he will not have such a tiny gap to take damage, but he will do various different spells to make sure the player has to learn his patterns.

      I feel like Navi should probably tell you that there was an opening between his attacks. The way his super armor wears off between attacks reminds me of lingering will from KH2, but the window is so small I’m not sure how an ordinary person supposed to figure it out. I would’ve assumed that I was doing the wrong thing not having the wrong timing. You do have to give your players a hint, either by showing them it can be done or outright telling them.

      Really enjoyed this mod. Even though it seems like the comments and feedback are pretty mixed, i think this is one of the coolest custom boss fights ive ever seen. Cant wait to see a finished version in 2024 😁

      honestly the difficulty is the draw for me! Definitely makes the typical Iron Knuckle enemy type and turns it into an engaging fight. The Dark Souls-like timing and the difficulty really is super cool. Maybe more of a visual cue when to strike?

    It’s never the boss itself that makes the boss difficult. It’s his goons he sends after you while he’s trying to smack you up.

    The upgrade Iron Knuckle asked Ganondorf for back in Ocarina of Time, but he never got. Ganondorf said he didn't have enought rupees and to come back when he was a little mmmmm richer.

    Honestly doesn't really seem like the most fun boss if you're only means of attacking it is to do jump slash constantly

      Thats what Iron knuckle fights were in OOT, this boss fight adds much more to the Iron Knuckle fight that isnt just jump slashing.

      @@doverboy1 Falling rocks and Floormasters isn't adding much. You still only jumpslash to inflict damage, except now the window timing is stupidly strict.

      It seems fun in concept, but honestly i can see myself fighting not the boss but my own controller. The window for jump slashing is already strict, getting launched towards the wall and not being able to switch the camera view towards the boss is not what I'd consider to be fun

      It seems to be a re-skin of Odolwa with an add-phase, and they replaced the bees with meteorites.

    He should have more solo attacks instead of the same swinging. Having the bulk of the attacks/damage being different enemies just kinda muddies the fight.

      Huh interesting. This was probably my personal favorite so far because of the difficulty, but i understand if its not everyones cup of tea, theres a lot going on here

      Yes, but I think it could work if the theme of the dungeon fits. Floormasters are considered undead and rocks more of earth, earth and undead themes fit well together. So if the setting was in like an underground warrior tomb and the battle took place, not in a castle, but a large earthen structure similar to dead hands, I think it could pass.

      ​@@bradyonetvI can definitely see why you like it. I think it's close to good.
      My big issues with it are that the first/third phase doesn't seem hard in a fun way, just repetitive and exacting, and the second goes too far the other direction. One fewer floormaster and some more variation in its sword moves during the solo phases would go a long way.
      Of course, it is easy to say this; I have dabbled enough in modding other games never meant to be modded to know there are a LOT of constraints on what modders can do and overall I'm super impressed by this.

    Cool idea, and a different one at that. This strikes me more as a very hard mid-boss instead of a final dungeon boss though for sure. It doesn't seem to have a central mechanic that needs to be used other than just slashing and blocking. I think he needs more stuff that he is able to do with perhaps more environmental interactions for the player for this to be a full fledged boss, because as it stands now it strikes me as a combination between boring and frustrating. Make him a bit easier (i.e. more lenient frame windows), good mid-boss.

      For instance, if we wanted to go super basic, instead of just immediately summoning the hands he could instead rise into the air and charge for a bit. If you don't hit him with an arrow/boomerang/whatever fast enough, then he summons the hands. If you do hit him, he falls to the ground and is paralyzed for a bit, allowing you to get some good hits in.

      yea, imo i think the incessant boulders were a bit much. i feel like the boulder-barrage should come only after 45%-55% of the enemy's health is gone, AND only while he's charging his ace-attack. So during his normal attack-phase, he could throw two or three individual boulders at you, but when he's charging his ace-attack, THEN he'll rain down the boulder-barrage so he can try to stop you from reaching him. otherwise, i like the direction the idea is trying to go in.

    Damn that looked really tough, would definitely be cool to see more tough Zelda bosses like these in the games. These days, I feel like the bosses are way too easy, it’s not as satisfying as it was back in the day.

      ​@@MrSnake9419Majora's Mask 3D doubled down on the whole "aim at eyeball" weakness. That alone made me go back to the original game.

      I don’t think that bosses were better ‘back in the day’, they’ve kinda been consistent in difficulty and formula, it may be that over time players have gotten better at video games in general.

      ​@anjacup1422 I also think that after the advent of the Souls series, it's become trendy for game devs to raise the meta for what constitutes a "difficult boss". I mean, this sort of feels like Sir Alonne stuffed into a 64 port.

    it looks like you can crouch poke the first swing and side step the third, allowing you to get more hits in.

      Crouch stabbing is actually patched in this hack believe it or not! If you try to crouch stab link stands up and does a forward thrust

      @@bradyonetv even then just crouching gives you more time to get a hit in as apposed to backflipping because you're already close enough.

    This is so cool, if nintendo ever goes back to dungeon centered small space gameplay, they should hire you. This is like watching alternate timeline where OOT was as unafraid to serve player's butts on a silver platter as MM was.

    I would have made 2 floor masters be summoned, 3 is a little much. There's a line between difficult and frustrating and I feel this is right on the line. Also who has 3 hands?

    I must be the only one that fails to recognise what is so atractive about this boss. The strategy consists in doing the same backwards flip + jump slash ad nauseam until you land a hit in what seems a crazy small time window in which he is vulnerable. And i dont even know why would you insist in repeating that strategy if the first 6-7 hits didnt land. It seems very repetitive and pointless, plus overwhelming you by summoning the most annoying kind of enemy in the game is a very cheap way of making the fight difficult.
    I like dark souls just fine, but Zelda games have way more tools to make bossfights entertaining, and this wouldn't even be a good fight by souls standards.

      I think thats valid critique, i always enjoy bosses that can be defeated with a variety of strategies. For what its worth, alot of this mod is designed to be intentionally difficult and frustrating, so i think this fits that theme very well

      Zelda having way more tools to make fights interesting *that you can rely on* compared to Souls is definitely something I've found to be true in developing enemies for it myself. Souls is honestly quite handicapped by having your basic dodge being your only reliable defense, as most enemies have to then base themselves around having attacks avoidable though invincibility frames, because maybe you're just a naked dude wielding a knife. Zelda, on the other hand, because it's structured around you having specific tools, can be built so that enemies can do things that need to be dealt with in a variety of different ways, so you can make attacks that need to be blocked/dodged/countered in more precise ways.

    Yeah am gonna be an ass*ole here and say that this doesnt look difficult, it looks annoying. Just like the Marauder from Doom Eternal, it just looks like a beefy enemy with a specific vulnerabilty time window that isnt being invincible and that has a bunch of annouing stuff it throws at you to distract you.
    Look, the work on the rom is very good and its a pretty decent adaptation into the game, I would say that I see it as a zelda enemy. But my gripe is just personal, If an enemy gets me i want it to be because I got careless, I underestimated their capabilities or over estimated mine, not because the only way to attack them is a very specific way on their big red weak spot/vulnerability window.
    Look, take what I say with a grain of salt. If you enjoy fighting this enemy, thats fine, if youre the one who made it, take everything i say with a dump truck full of salt, this rant is just the flashbacks of having to fight that annoying enemy coming to the surface. Am sure there are things aout of the developer's control like the limitations of the engine, the general movement of the assets and even hit boxes and such. So take this as it is, a rant of a very frustrated player who hates fighting enemies that just put their fucking shields up and stop the gameplay to a hault.

      full disclosure enemy was not made by me. mod is linked in the comments and the mod creators comment is pinned. imho i think a boss can be difficult and annoying, i dont think those two things are mutually exclusive (tho i didnt find the fight annoying). its def harder than anything vanilla z64

      According to Nokaubure, the creator of the mod, it’s not hardware compatable. It makes sense why, the mod is a dungeon generator which is pretty laggy even on emu.

    This is very Elden Ring-y. I like it but there should be more ways to attack the boss other than precise spacing into a jump attack. Thats a bit lame that you cant utilise link's movement options to take this guy on but the overall idea of a boss like this is cool and OoT couldve used some mini or major bosses like this (though with allowing you to do more than just cheese jump attacks and panic run away lol)

      Because I’m almost done with oot and I cannot imagine an enemy this difficult in the game. Not to mention how coordinated this guy is playing link. No way Nintendo would make a boss this hard. Also the weird white outline over the hearts look interesting

    That’s a great idea for a boss. The hands hold you down to get chopped or crushed by the boulders

    It's neat... But it definitely seems a bit samey. OoT doesn't have the best combat system as is, and it involves a lot of waiting for openings, but a lot of the satisfaction for the longer boss fights comes from those openings allowing for extended periods of damage. The amount of clinking in this particular fight just seems very frustrating, and there are no moments of extended vulnerability to vent that. Not to mention that a boss fight this long that has such small windows for damage is quickly going to have you relying on the same few moves which will quickly exhaust the limited range of animations and become boring visually.
    The boss's design and concept are neat, but this is definitely a fight meant for a game with much tighter and more interesting combat.

      Know what could be done? Bottle smacking rocks back to him to let you get in some cheeky hits. In exchange, the rocks could simultaneously be buffed and nerfed so that you can’t block them, but can easily evade them with a roll.
      Remove a couple hands from the hand summon, but make the remaining hands do strangle damage.
      The barrier has no reason to exist rn. Could always make it so you can chink away his armor until he actually has a reason to use it. Maybe the barrier doesn’t protect against explosions (or at least is disabled by them) to make things interesting?

    Good programming, but he's easy without his cronies. Obviously, healing items makes the fight easier.
    Nice to see magma rocks be summoned since vanilla iron knuckle has no long-range attacks!

    Only suggestion I can make is that it seems like that only way to inflict damage is to land a lucky jump slash. Very cool boss though

      Its not a lucky jump strike he is hitting him during the end lag of his attacks, it less than a second but it doesn't seem that hard to do.

    I'd like to see some bosses that are more Soulsborne-like. I think Zelda; Revival kinda missed out on an opportunity to have something like that guarding a piece of heart.

      @@bradyonetv I watched SoulsMidnight play it, it looks pretty interesting. Has traditional dungeons where the rewards are heart pieces, just lacking in boss-battles. Otherwise, yeah. I'd say it's worth a look.

    I never wanted Breath of the Wild... I always wanted a real sequel to Ocarina of Time or another Zelda in the style of Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask. I don't care about graphical improvements. I loved every minute of N64's titles. It seems like they could make 3 decent modern + new N64-esque titles in the time it takes them to make one next-gen game.

    Cranked up the Iron Knuckle into a summoner/spellcaster with a weapon giving it extended reach and guard, a critical phase where it doesn’t lose its armor and goes aggro on you hard... the only thing left to do is make it and its minions turn invisible and it would be outrageously hard!
