Great job on getting that VW running, Jack. I had to laugh when the battery fell out! Back in the 80s my husband restored VW Beetles. We had a '65 that the floor was rusty but he restored the body and put a new paint job on it so it looked great on the outside. I was concerned about the rusty floor under the battery but he said no problem. One day I was driving it and it did a sudden death. I pulled over and a gentleman came running up to my car and told me a battery just fell out of my car. Well that explained why it quit running. I was not amused at the time, but we've gotten a lot of laughs out of it since then.
I am a 76 year old woman, but I love to watch your videos. I grew up with a dad and husband who liked to work on cars, so I admire you for all you are learning. You have a wonderful dad!

Good for you for taking on a project like this! My first car was a 1974 VW bug. It was $400 bucks, and I bought it by selling my 4-H steer at auction when I was 16 years old (a long long long time ago!). It was a project car for sure! No fenders, no breaks and more. My dad and I got it running great and found parts from a local junk yard. Lasted many many years until it got smashed by a snow plow. ~ Great memories as my dad has passed now. So happy to see you out there working on this project with your dad. I see your's is a super-beetle by the way the spare tire is sitting. The floor is made separate floor pans/panels that can be replaced. Looking forward to seeing more videos of this project in the future. :)

Whatever you do save the vacuum advance distributor. I have rebuilt several. People loved to tear those out and put a centrifical Bosch 009 distrubtor and they never run right. If you can get it back to original and bring the chirp back then you know you have it dialed. Also there is a flap system in the air housing that is attached by a rod to a thermostat below the right side of the block. This is what allowes the engine to warm up. Most of the time people ripped those out because if they go bad the engine gets hot and will seize up if that thermostat fails. People always complained they had no heat because people tore all that stuff out because you had to change that thermostat regularly to protect the engine.

And here's why dads like for their teenage daughters to date a guy who drives a Beetle.
      1) The seats are separated by the hand brake, the shift knob, and the tunnel so there's no snuggling.
      2) It doesn't go fast enough to get into any trouble.
      3) When the guy is driving it his arms and legs are busy steering, shifting, and working the clutch - you can't drive this with one arm around the girl (or texting or talking on the phone).
      4) The back seat is really small. Wink wink.
      5) They never break down on a deserted road because you can always push start it (as they did).
So yes, give it to your little brother.

Wow. What a find. Nice to see it has a factory sunroof. How cool. VW put foam in the C pillar which absorbed water and made rust. It's difficult to replace the C pillar metal but would be worth it in my opinion due to the sunroof or you could cut it out.

it may look like an old rust bucket now but its got real potential.
You really brought back some good memories. Growing up me and my uncle used to fix up these old bugs and customise them and enter them in classic VW car shows here in South Africa.
