  • Ableton Tutorial on how to use sidechain compression inside a dubstep tune.
    Been wanting to do this for a while now. And well, we got there. So, in this tutorial I cover sidechain compression to clean up the bass frequencies and add punch and groove to a melodic dubstep tune inspired by flux pavilion. Also, towards the end, I dive into a sidechain effect to get your basses sounding like 2010/2011 Nero, Gemini etc.
    So if you dont know what sidechaining is, this video is a must!!

    1 thing which I didnt quite make clear in the video. The release steps in after after the sidechain source passes through, so in this video the sidechain for the kick lasts for the kicks duration (60ms) and then the release time after that (45ms) . So the sidechain is quite slow which i wasnt entirely aware of. If you want a faster release set it to 1ms so the instant the kick is gone then the sidechain lets go. A video on this coming soon...

      just a tip bro. if you're producing something more groovy like a glitch hop track, increase the attack to like 20ms or around that value. it will let the notes that hit at the same time as the kick to poke throgh just a tiny bit, allowing you to preserve the groove of the melody in a more efficient way.

    Well.. Be aware of clicking and plopping compressors with extreme high ratios and short attack times. Maybe you should move the kick and snare some milliseconds back by decreasing the track ms delay value (the "d" on the right side) . What about sidechaining of other tracks by a vocal or a lead guitar with higher release times and less radical ratios, maybe some softer knees. You got any tutorial for that dude? :)

    • @AntidoteAudio
      @AntidoteAudio  7 лет назад

      Yeah true, although faster attack and release times get more punch for the drums the annoying clicking comes through when your song is minimal. Im planning on doing another sidechaining tutorial soon for really accurate drum sidechaining (this video is just for getting started and seeing what it can do) and more techniques for sidechaining with vocals to reverb and delay, possibly leads and other high mid frequency instruments and sidechaing gating...

    Highpass the kick so you can use lower threshold or release settings

    Multiband sidechaining is more specific though, top frequancy for the snare etc...

    As a producer this is how you want to learn. Not these other videos with zero context like the general kick bass and no music project

    Use the Live 8 Compressor. It doesn't click when the attack is 0.01. (Saw this at Slynk youtube channel)

      @AntidoteAudio  7 лет назад +1

      oh true, thanks man. Yeah, most of the time if you mix is quite full you can get away with your click being buried behind everything (hense why i didn't notice it) but when you start to strip your 'elements back' the click comes to the front of the mix and gets in the way. I wonder if ableton intentionally made it click if the attack gets too low...

    When I sidechain to drums like you did with Compressor, my bass just gets heavily distorted, not tucked under. Kinda confused, am I missing something?

    • @AntidoteAudio
      @AntidoteAudio  7 лет назад +1

      From what it sounds like, your attack and release times could be too quick, try easing them up a bit and see how that sounds...?

    • @zuda4713
      @zuda4713 7 лет назад

      Just figured it out. Raised the Knee and very slightly raised the release and thresh and it already eliminated the distortion. Doesn't quite sound perfect yet but already much better. Thanks for the quick response! Your tutorials are really helping!
      Also love the FUCK out of your accent hahaha

    • @AntidoteAudio
      @AntidoteAudio  7 лет назад

      haha cheers! Yeah i notice when ever i try sidechain sub bass, if the values are set too quickly the sub will distort and it sounds horrible. Some things you can sidechain hard and some you just cant...

    I route everything that I wanna sidechain to an audio track and trigger shaperbox with midi, I suck with compressor 😂😂😂

    • @AntidoteAudio
      @AntidoteAudio  5 лет назад +1

      thats definitely easier and probably less demanding on cpu, but the only thing you sacrifice is extra control over individual side-chain elements?... in saying that theres so many ways to sidechain tho haha, volume automation, lfo tool, sidechaining extra, depends what floats your boat

    How do I sidechain from drum rack? Because I managed to side chain the kick but not the snare

    • @AntidoteAudio
      @AntidoteAudio  Год назад

      with sidechaining from a drum rack, you can select the "audio from" from the drum rack and then next selector under that in the sidechain menu you can select what individual pad you want the sidechain to trigger from (eg kick or snare etc etc)
