Over the years I have been fortunate to hear many a great singers and Opera productions, this one stands as a pinnacle of my experiences at the Royal Opera House in London, with Torsten in the leading role. Transforming and most memorable experience. He was simply magnificent.

While being an absolutely superb performance from both singer and orchestra, it's without doubt the best SOUNDING recording of this I've ever heard. The orchestra is perfectly balanced within itself and in the stereo, and sounds huge! And the balance between voice and orchestra could not be more perfect! Its an aural treat as well as a musical one. On a slightly different note (only slightly!!!) I'm a musician! So can someone please tell me how a 23 year old! (Korngold!) can write music of this depth, sublime beauty, and an insight, way beyond 23years, of the world around him! Genius is an overused word, but I can't think of another word that fits Korngold. Innate musical talent doesn't come bigger than this. How lucky are we to be the recipients of his talent, and also in this case, of this thrilling performance. MAGIC!!!

    • @julianbrown7976
      @julianbrown7976 Год назад +3

..and he had been writing equally great music since he was about 17. Indeed one almost gets the impression he came into this world with an innate mastery of composition, orchestration, libretto etc etc. I also don't see how he could have learnt all of this in the normal way.

    • @richardbowery7423
      @richardbowery7423 Год назад +2

@@julianbrown7976 Agreed on everything, including that last sentence, it really does seem impossible!
The only downside for me, and I can't be the only one! is that being lured to Hollywood meant 'we' were
never again going to hear the likes of his musical originality and flair, unless you think the Hollywood
film music was on a par! It never was for me unfortunately! An extra passing Korngold comment!
On RUclips there's a post of him playing (unaccompanied) on piano one of his own pieces from his opera,
while I am! a musician, I'm not a pianist, but his playing and in particular his improvising is sooooo musical
and inspired, I just found it a totally thrilling performance! It may not be that way for an 'actual' pianist, but
I felt the same wonderful musicality in it, that I found in the opera pieces! I think I read somewhere he was a
child piano prodigy, if so, perhaps this performance is not surprising then!

He had Mahler to thank. Mahler recognised genius and gave some early direction. "During the final days of his Vienna season, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) received a visit of Julius Korngold in House Gustav Mahler Vienna 1898-1909 (Auenbruggergasse No. 2, Rennweg No. 5). Julius was music critic at the Neue Freie Presse (1864-1938) and accompanied by his 9-years-old son, Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957). In Year 1906, period 07-06-1906 to 12-06-1906. Mahler called him a “musical genius” and recommended study with composer Alexander von Zemlinsky (1871-1942). Richard Strauss (1864-1949) also spoke very highly of the youth.

@@DavidoffGustav Thanks for that really informative information. While I'm quite sure who somebody studies
with/learns from, has to be beneficial (given the teacher(s) good). No-one, in any area of creativity, be it
music, painting, writing etc. can be made better than their innate potential. yes! probably get there quicker,
but put crassly, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear !!! There has to be an element of silk from
the get go. Nature verses nurture?
However he got there, wonderful for us that he did. By the way, coincidence, I've just very recently come across a Korngold piece I'd never heard. RUclips: Ich ging zu Imm, Renee Fleming BBC Proms 2007.
Your Korngold knowledge means you're probably aware of it, but this version? Renee sings it superbly,
and the piece itself is of course superb. Made even more beautiful by the slightly mysterious lyric.
Also, while I am a musician, I'm not a pianist, where as I think ? Korngold was a child prodigy on the
piano ? Anyway, on RUclips there is a post of him playing one of his own pieces un-accompanied,
so while not being a pianist I can't be objective, but as a musician, I found it absolutely thrilling and
full of that thing that can't be taught, musicality, flair and once again to be crass, the X factor.
Thanks for your post, here we are talking because of a shared love of talent. Great !

Torsten Kerl in fantastic voice in concert with an orchestra that is in tune with this genius composition by Erich Korngold. The melodic themes and the sheer *length* of those themes is magical. I love Korngold's use of the harp. So moving! So beautiful. This is life!

    O Freund, ich werde
    sie nicht wiedersehen.
Ein Traum hat mir den Traum zerstört,
    ein Traum der bittren Wirklichkeit,
    den Traum der Phantasie.
    Die Toten schicken solche Träume,
    wenn wir zuviel mit ihnen
    und in ihnen leben.
Wie weit soll unsere Trauer gehen,
    wie weit darf sie es,
    ohne uns zu entwurzeln?
    Schmerzlicher Zwiespalt des Gefühls!

I am sorry but i have to say that this is real singing. And listen to singers like Del Monaco... Its not about head voice or anything... It is just about the voice and the language. The purity of the vowel in the language gives the voice its full colour and resonance.
