      @I know you are right, And I just got owned but: the lower the rear axle ratio the higher the tow rating. That's why medium duty trucks with the highest GCWR have the lowest available rear axle ratio. If we are talking 3/4 ton gas pickup trucks...consumers who tow want the 4.10 (lower rear axle) not the 3.73. GM should have kept the lower rear axle mated to the 6 speed auto. The icing on the cake would be a 4.10 with the 10-speed auto...or at the bare minimum give GM the 10-speed mated to the 3.73 in lieu of the 6 speed. We are not talking about fuel mileage here. We are talking max towing and max gross combination weight rating. Look at Ford, RAM, or Chevy Medium online order guide and towing application. The lower the rear end...4.30...4.88...the more they are rated to tow and the higher the GCWR. It's all about the launch...getting the load moving and keeping the engine in the torque curve.

I wouldn't complain about those times, speeds, or brake applications. 3/4 ton gassers were rated for 9250# towing just several years ago. I also would never attempt that. Ponder the physics. Nah. 3.73 gets it done. 4.10 is miserable on the highway and interstate, especially if you're in a diesel. I hated my 4.10. Sure, it got my 17,000lb horse trailer moving, but maintaining 70mph on the highway means you're sucking fuel and making a lot of heat and constant boost pressure.

      @Andy Hass If you notice, anytime the engine was over 4,500 RPM it was able to accelerate (not just maintain speed) till it would shift into the next gear (mainly 2nd to 3rd). When it hit 3rd gear it was at 3,600 rpm which is not enough power to hold speed and then it would slow down till it down shifted. Having more gears allows the engine to have more places where it can hit 5,000 RPM and over. The 10-speed would have a gear ratio in between 2nd and 3rd on the 6-speed and allow the truck to rev higher in this gear while going the same speed like over 4,000 rpm at 60 mph not 3,600 rpm in the 6-speed. With a 16,000 lb trailer it’s not just about power, it’s about at what speed (MPH) this power occurs. Exact same reason that a lot of semis have 18 gears. Also, a 10-speed will have a similar top gear ratio as a 6-speed, the 10 does have a wider spread (meaning more lower gears). The 10 speed has 7 gears under overdrive, the 6-speed only has 4.

    Just watched the new 7.3 Ford video and came back to this one to get an idea of how much better the Ford is and it’s obvious that the actual real world difference is a lot bigger than the numbers would suggest.... GM powertrain engineers clearly didn’t map out the shift points properly ,as he went thru the lights at the top at 2500 rpm foot to the floor,that trans should have downshifted to a lower gear at that point. I’ve seen this before with GM ,they just drop the ball on programming.

      I have a 1 ton GMC with the 6.0L gas engine and I tow a 14k pound fifth wheel. Does just fine for me other than the fuel mileage which is why I kinda wanna upgrade to a diesel but they're just another 10k dollars I don't really have and with the EPA cracking down on non emissions tunes and delete kits, diesels are going to be garbage once those systems fail and it'll be another 10k dollars to fix it, so why not just buy a gasser and save money upfront and hopefully down the road.

    • @joesainato8051
      @joesainato8051 4 года назад +1

      dedalliance1 definitely room and need for a diesel. I don’t think they will be garbage and there’s always ways around things. But I understand your concerns. This might deter some people who just want a diesel to say they have one. If you are towing loads like they are in the mountains a diesel is a must

    • @dedalliance1
      @dedalliance1 4 года назад

      @@joesainato8051 Well, I bought my camper in Colorado, not too far from where tfl is and then I drove it up to Montana and have been living in the camper for like 5 or 6 months now while working, and I've taken it over passes and out camping and it does just fine other than going a little slow.
      You say owning a diesel is a must but honestly they're not. My truck is rated at 13,700 pounds max towing and these new GM's are rated at 16,600 and that's enough capacity to tow many large fifth wheels and campers and horse trailers and flat beds and car haulers, my brother in laws dad has like a 40 foot aluminum car hauler enclosed gooseneck trailer that weighs like 7k pounds and then he puts his 2001 duramax drag truck in it which brings it up to like 14k pounds which even that large of a setup is within the limits of new gas trucks. So what exactly does someone need a diesel for? The only advantages of a diesel is to maintain speed better when towing, and accelerating, better fuel mileage, and better reliability as far as putting a couple 100k miles on it. But with emissions now destroying new diesels, with high labor rates and higher fuel costs and oil costs over a gas vehicle, you really have to ask yourself is going a little faster worth the risk of everything that could go wrong with a modern diesel?
      I can't speak on the new 6.6l gas engine, but the 6.0l has been in everything from 3/4 ton suburbans to work vans to pickups and more since the early 2000s and hundreds of thousands of them have gone to 200k+ miles, which is just as reliable as a lot of modern diesels. My sister and her husband both have a 2012 or 2011 Silverado diesel 1 ton, both emissions systems have completely failed in them in under 200k miles, which would cost thousands and thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars to fix the legal way, one of the trucks sat for 2 years because they lived in a county with smog control and couldn't afford to fix it. The other one failed when they were a thousand miles away from home with a horse trailer, they would have been utterly screwed if they couldn't have just walked into a delete shop and strip everything, that's not legal anymore, even in the slightest.
      And trust me I still want a diesel personally just because I want the fuel economy, but the way this world is going with tree huggers and anti coal and anti fossil fuels I wouldn't be surprised if they outlaw diesels all together and maybe even gas trucks in 20 or 30 years. So what's the point in buying a forever truck if forever might end just down the road? But that's just speculation who really knows what will happen. All I know is modern diesels aren't all that they're cracked up to be.

    • @joesainato8051
      @joesainato8051 4 года назад

      dedalliance1 I hear you and agree on most everything you have said. As many say the emissions is the bad part of modern diesel. It’s unfortunate because ultimately motor vs motor minus emissions the diesel will most definitely outlast a gasser but as you stated a premium cost. I understand ratings that are given to trucks and there max capacity but let’s face the reality if you are working that truck at max capacity failure is much more likely to happen. Just for the record I have a gasser and always have cuz my trailers are at a weight I don’t feel I need a diesel. I’m like you I would like to have one but until I deem it necessary I will stick to a gasser most likely.

    • @dedalliance1
      @dedalliance1 4 года назад

      @@joesainato8051 Yeah you don't really want to put trucks to their max all the time, but they also might hold up to it too though. Have to realize that the max towing is based on pretty much 3 factors, reliability because when the truck is under warranty or extended warranty, it's up to the provider to pay for the repairs and so they don't want to pay anything and they make the vehicle so it at least lasts that long. And then there's safety, what rules and regulations do they have to follow to get the tow numbers certified, and then bragging rights and looking good on paper, how far are they willing to stretch the numbers to get a class leading number.
      Kinda like Dodge, great diesel engines, but they've had transmission problems and rust problems, but you can do anything to the engine and it'll go for a long time, if you can afford a new transmission every so often lol. That could be the case with the new 6.6l gas, maybe it's just the transmission holding back the performance and the reliability. But only time will tell.
      I just like diesels because they get 20 mpg highway where my truck might get 13 if I'm lucky.

They care about their towing experience. And honestly daily driving the diesel is a lot of fun too! Damn these new diesels have power! Go diesel and never look back. If you're gonna spend this kind of money on a truck. Honestly 10k more isnt that much when taking the price of what these trucks already cost into consideration. And who's worried about things breaking on the more expensive diesels? Probably not many as well. Thats what warranties and extended warranties are for. @andrews If you notice, anytime the engine was over 4,500 RPM it was able to accelerate (not just maintain speed) till it would shift into the next gear (mainly 2nd to 3rd). When it hit 3rd gear it was at 3,600 rpm which is not enough power to hold speed and then it would slow down till it down shifted. Having more gears allows the engine to have more places where it can hit 5,000 RPM and over. The 10-speed would have a gear ratio in between 2nd and 3rd on the 6-speed and allow the truck to rev higher in this gear while going the same speed like over 4,000 at 60 mph not 3,600 in the 6-speed. With a 16,000 lb trailer it’s not just about power, it’s about at what speed (MPH) this power occurs. Exact same reason that a lot of semis have 18 gears.
