I've never understood why some other parts of the world an an extra syllable to the word "aluminum". They say "a-looh-mini-um". How can you get that from aluminum?
Because in other countries it's spelled with an extra "i" for minium. "Sir Humphry Davy, a British chemist, discovered this metal in 1808. He also discovered and named sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, barium, and boron; lots of “ium” usage in those names, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Davy originally gave this element the name aluminum after the mineral alumina, whose name derive from the base alum which means “bitter salt” in Latin. This original spelling straddles the two competing versions we have today. By 1812, when Davy published his book Chemical Philosophy he had changed the spelling to aluminum. As in the American version with one “i” and ending in “um,” aluminum. However, later that same year another anonymous scientist wrote an objection to Davy’s spelling aluminum in a British political-literacy journal, Quarterly Review. This other scientist decided that Davy’s spelling didn’t sound sufficiently Latin, and proposed the name aluminium, stating “for so we shall take the liberty of writing the word, in preference to aluminum, which has a less classical sound.” Many people, this anonymous scientist included, thought that the “ium” ending was more consistent with other elements; much like the others named by Davy."

Yes Kevin, have you discovered any other audio alternatives that might be better (and less expensive) than the GoPro 3.5 mm Microphone Adapter? Cheers . Oh, are you a Hearts or a Hibs fan? ;)
Kevin, I think I might try "Double Sound Syncing", by using my iPhone 7 with the Zoom Handy Record app and an external mic (not sure which one yet... some about $20.00 USD)
If you're syncing audio in post, you can record audio in a number of ways. I've always looked at simpler solutions do try and record them together where I can.
Completely unusable! Around 90% of the recordings do not have audio recorded. I guess the reason is the weak usb connection with the short cable and the weight of this device. @Gopro - you should take this part out of sortiment if you want to be selling only high quality products. 65€ are laying in my garage for month and I don't have the courage to sell to someone else.
Late to the party but I remember reading about another user having the same issue on the forums. I don't remember the exact fix but basically there is a certain "way" you need to use the GoPro so that it records the audio from the USB C box. MIGHT have been so that you have to turn on the camera and then hit record. Only hitting the record button would make the audio not saved.
Thank you very much for the helpfull and interesting explanations Kevin! I ordered that little fu..expensive adapter! BTW, I like very much the scottish accent;-) cheers, Paul
Hi, I'm interested in purchasing in external microphone adapter for my Hero 6 to improve the audio reception & have a better user experience. I understand only the GoPro brand of this external accessory will work for GoPro cameras but would like to know if this USB Type C to 3.5mm microphone adapter can only work exclusively on GoPro & not other brand of devices? The chip or DAC inside may not be compatible with for instants a smartphone? Please tell me have you tested it with other devices if my question doesn't sound silly, it would be expensive to invest in something like this if it doesn't.
+Wilson Lee I hadn't tested that before as I use a usb type C to 3.5mm connector that came with my phone. I assumed it would work, but I just tried it with my phone and it didn't appear to work. It used my phones default mic instead.
Great video mate thank you very much for sharing I've struggled with audio as well I have the Sony x3000 all the audio is way too hot recently purchase the Hero 6 black so I appreciate the video I noticed a big difference between the rode mic and the Shure mic. What model did you use sounded pretty good. BC is watching
Check GoPro's site now if you want a sound adapter. I imagine all the pirates will buy them all up fast and mark them up on ebay and amazon. But I ordered one just today at go pro's site for 50 bucks. amazon hasn't got any stocked yet.
Given Apples lightening to 3.5mm adapter has a DAC built into it and it’s tiny, I’m not sure why they couldn’t make something a similar size...apart from phantom power and the usb C input. P.s. having those box lights behind you was very annoying to watch
I'm actually pretty impressed with the audio from my hero7 black for what it is. In a perfect environment it's very passable. It's the bad audio situations that have convinced me to buy an external microphone. I do agree this audio adapter is completely overpriced and ridiculous but otherwise for its form factor I am pretty blown away at the quality of my hero 7. I own multiple full frame DSLR set ups but I always hate dragging them out to do Vlog type stuff. This was the main purpose of buying my hero 7 and at the end of the day the best camera is the one you are willing to take with you
It depends on how your using it. It's prone to pick up a lot of handling noise, even more so if it's in a case. For an action camera it's ok, but it still feel they can improve audio.
I just dont see why couldnt they add 3.5mm hole under that cover too, theres plenty of room. and i dont know about you but i would rather have audio input than mini hdmi output that is there
+Mike D So how come all the phones have this feature built-in? Even the tiniest Iphone SE has a built-in microphone input and can record better 4K than Gopro? The waterproofing is just a couple of pieces of rubber on the cover of Gopro accessory port. Most of the high end phones are waterproof anyway nowadays.
+Mike D So what? The fact is that the waterproofing is nothing but a piece of rubber inside the device. Even an Indian engineer can design one. Gopro could integrate mic input into their device. You can clearly see the room for additional few condensators when you open one. So where is that "robustness" you are talking about? Since the public opinion is that Gopros are piece of shit cameras that have an unlimited number of stupid bugs and engineering mistakes.
+Mike D So what exactly is your fetish with waterproofing of phones? I never said phones are waterproof at 10m. I'm talking about the waterproofing of the accessory port of the Gopro since your original comment was doubting it was possible to offer a mic input which was waterproof because of the small space left for such thing. And the waterproof part of the accessory port is still a piece of rubber. There's ample space for mic input. Anyone can see it.
just out of curiosity: where is that accent from? :) thanks for the video btw. did you see any other, smaller, cheaper USB C to mic adaptor that works on the GP7?
+evoGage I suspect they do work, but not sure about quality. Plus you wouldn't be able to charge the phone at the same time. I was tempted to buy one, but also knew I'd it didn't work I'd have to buy the official one anyways.
Kevin Muldoon Yup. Really depends what kind of situations you use the camera, but a cheap lav mic that goes to your iPhone might be a decent low budget setup.
Yeah the reason it's big and expensive is that it's not just an adaptor, it's an analogue to digital converter. I read somewhere USB C is fully digital unlike old usb. I've ordered one from tweeks cycles too but they're still out of stock.
just get a cheap mini jack to usb c ..you don´t need to have all original gopro periferals, they just play with beginners customers to over sell accessories
@@KevinMuldoon I did on my hero black 3 ..sorry didn't thought about possible security things, and that's sucks ..I just bought one and I will have to find a workaround :) this bulky thing seems aweful.
Apology for falling in the typical fast stupid comment, after making some research it look like that Gopro 5 and 6 need the audio to be pre digitalized due to the recording format and the box do that so it need the box to work . I was thinking about canceling my today order, but is a though choice as it is still an awesome camera, I decided to keep it, but is soon to know if is a smart choice :) ..side note: seems that the usb c extra port is total useless, it cannot charge while recording audio (but I didn't test myself)
Yeah it's a pity they set it up this way. Up until the gopro 4 you could use any mic easily, but you need to use the adapter for the 5 or 6. Perhaps there is a cheap 3rd party alternative now that is designed specifically for the gopro, but there certainly wasn't any available when I bought it.
@@KevinMuldoon couldn't find any, I guess that is not so convenient to rebuild for cheap, however I have bought in the past for a couple of euros a thing to flip the gopro hero 3black+ backpack screen costing otherwise 50 ...is just so easy to upgrade old models of anything :)
Is there seriously nothing that I can use to record airplane audio with the gopro hero 7 silver? There is, but, I don't want to pay $100+ CAD for it. It's out of my price range...
I use my gopro5 to record kayak fishing trips...the on board mic is horrid, but using THAT brick thing is not an option at all, that'd be a lb of kit on top of my head ffs...Great accent btw, it seems I've watched enough shows/movies with Scottish accents to understand 99% of what you're saying!
My son has a Hero 5 he wants to sell. I have a Drift Ghost i use on my motorbike with an external microphone. Accepts a 3.5mm plug and Drift has 3 levels of microphone sensitivity settings. FFS as good as the GoPro might be, this microphone issue is absolute BS. After seeing this video, i will stay with the Drift.
In Brazil, this accessory is costing today R$ 500, plus the case with the socket to put this .. weird and badly designed thing, costs more R$ 200. So, for you that is not a Brazilian understand the problem, our base salary (minimum salary) is R$ 954/month. I bought a GoPro yesterday, already used by someone else, for R$ 1100, with accessories, two batteries, and a memory card. As a way to capture audio with better quality, I will need to spend almost the equivalent of another GoPro. See you guys complaining about the price, design, motivation of this accessory makes me feel represented. Thank you.
Hi Samuel. Yeah Brazil is expensive for technology. I spent a couple of weeks in Rio, Sao Paulo and Igazu, and was amazed at how expensive it was compared to other parts of South America. Gorgeous country though. Would love to go back. Have you considered ordering items directly from China? Kevin
The issue with this microphone adapter is not even its price.. the real issue is why is it even there - not to mention the size of it. GoPro, just build that damn thing inside the next gen GoPro just like you did in old GoPros..until then I am sticking with Chinese action cameras who Allow this incredible function encapsulated in their cameras.. for the fraction of the price.
Good video and very informative! The audio isn't great on GoPro's but yeh I agree, it's too much money for an adaptor! Who do they think they are? Apple? 😂😂😆 . Where did you get the casing/housing? That looked smart and very handy.
I hear so many problems with the sound from people, I can only say I must be very lucky because the sound is very good with my camera, hero 6. I have also seen some nice ways of using velcro to attach a mic adapter to the case. I guess its a case of perseverance with a budget mentality in mind. Thanks for the tips.
I guess the people at GoPRO had it all figured out with this pricey piece of "no alternative for" add on external accessory eh, they're all outrageously priced compared to after market third party cheap knock offs. I was lucky to get my GoPro Hero 6 for almost a hundred dollars off months after launch, I'm actually impressed with it's performance so far. I can live with the not so perfect audio, I guess I'll pass on buying the external microphone 3.5mm adapter because the processing chip inside is only recognized by a GoPro action cameras.
Nothing wrong with GoPro action devices to make their own peripherals & accessories exclusively for their brand of products, but when they price it outrageously high then this isn't a good business strategy because aggressive pricing will turn customers away for buying externals with no alternate choices. That's the reason GoPro is in the red loosing out to their competitions who has a choice of buying cheaper third party & after market accessories, over pricing accessories is a short sighted profit decision from GoPro rather than focusing on grabbing more market shares by selling more cameras.
For me the solution go pro offer sucks, as stated in the video, it's big, ugly and expensive and you're still tied to the camera. I opted to buy a TASCAM. DR-05 Linear PCM Stereo Recorder, uses 2 AAA batteries and costs arround £80.00 gbp so yes maybe a little more investment but that is well worth the advantage of being of camera. I still keep the GO Pro audio switched on, so I end up with two audio recordings, making it easy to sync the Tascam recording. The big advantage is, the quality and range on the Tascam is excellent and I can also situate the Tascam close to the source of the sound output. That's a definite plus using a wide angle video at any distance from the subject and can be recording the subject while in motion. The Tascam has a standard tripod screw socket so can be mounted using various attachments via this socket or it can simply be popped into the speakers top pocket. You can leave it sitting on a table in meeting type situations and it picks up everybody. Finally having two separate audio sequences can be very useful, just take the time to get a perfect sync and move between them on the time line, fade as required. There are more expensive models but I find this model entirely satisfactory for anything I'm doing.
I have a Sony audio recorder, but the benefit of using the adapter is that it lets you record everything in one. I don't mind syncing audio in one shot, but it can be a pain in certain situations.
They could easily put a external 3.5 or 2.5mm jack. Take a look at the Thieye T5e, it has a external mic port and it works great.

Any luck with any other third party adapter cables now? Do they work or is it still a GoPro-Only solution?
I'm not aware of any 3rd party solutions.
Thanks dude for your very informative video on audio. I think it will help me a lot. Mahalo y gracias, Justin from the channel Los Perms.
You're welcome.
How are you recording you talking with your microphone and headset on.? Are you recording your audio and footage separately? I bought my go pro to have footage of me talking but I’m going to use my microphone setup for the audio part of it.
Yeah the footage was recorded with na overhead camera and mic.
Does any usb type c to aux cable works.??
I don't believe so.
Hi Kevin, so have you come across any better solutions since this video? Cheers!
Better than the GoPro official mic?
Sorry, I'm replying via the RUclips app and it doesn't even show me the title of the video :) All I can see is the thumbnail.
Yes Kevin, have you discovered any other audio alternatives that might be better (and less expensive) than the GoPro 3.5 mm Microphone Adapter? Cheers . Oh, are you a Hearts or a Hibs fan? ;)
I'm neither :)
No I haven't found anything. As far as I know, only the official adapter is supported.
Is it possible to use a 3rd party adaptor or do you have to use the GoPro brand?
From what I have read, no third party adapter works with it. That may be different now, but I don't recall any other brand working with it.
Kevin Muldoon Nice one mate thank you, great video!
Kevin! Check your Twitter!
Will it work for hero 7 white/sliver?
No. It is not compatible.
Are you 100% sure the mic adaptor wont work for the go pro 7 White?? Its cause im about to buy one. Please let me know
No it's not compatible.
So theres nothing I can do if ai want better audio
Why it’s sooo expensive?
What case is that? The whole setup looks great!
It's this one ruclips.net/video/ZjEel6NtE5c/видео.html
There's a new one out that has a space for the battery. Ulanzi v2 I think it's called. 👍
Kevin Muldoon oh man I didn’t think you would reply! Thank you!
Anytime 👍
Completely unusable!
Around 90% of the recordings do not have audio recorded. I guess the reason is the weak usb connection with the short cable and the weight of this device. @Gopro - you should take this part out of sortiment if you want to be selling only high quality products. 65€ are laying in my garage for month and I don't have the courage to sell to someone else.
I've had that a few times too. You really need to make sure it's connected securely. Such a pain.
BTW, I like very much the scottish accent;-)
cheers, Paul
Thanks Paul. Glad you found it useful.
Boya c typ mic use in gopro with his mic adaptor c typ
why in UK house have such low ceiling? it look claustrophobic!
My other house is a castle.
Standard Plus with video micro - wow nice loudness
+GamingCentrum With my headphones on it sounded too loud as it was picking up more handling noise.
That’s a cool accent !
I don't know. That Rode mic sounds better for reality video. The battery mic would be good for a pod cast or something
analogue to digital converter
Great video mate thank you very much for sharing I've struggled with audio as well I have the Sony x3000 all the audio is way too hot recently purchase the Hero 6 black so I appreciate the video I noticed a big difference between the rode mic and the Shure mic. What model did you use sounded pretty good. BC is watching
The Shure mic is the VP83.
It's necessary. The default mics on the gopro are awful.
WTH doesn't RODE just offer a foam cover for their mics instead of that furry thing?
Can I not just buy a microphone with the same connection?
No. It won't work.
Ok thanks, It’s hard for a Yorkshire man to spend £50 on a bit of plastic🤣🤣
Haha no worries
Check GoPro's site now if you want a sound adapter. I imagine all the pirates will buy them all up fast and mark them up on ebay and amazon. But I ordered one just today at go pro's site for 50 bucks. amazon hasn't got any stocked yet.
Given Apples lightening to 3.5mm adapter has a DAC built into it and it’s tiny, I’m not sure why they couldn’t make something a similar size...apart from phantom power and the usb C input. P.s. having those box lights behind you was very annoying to watch
I've been using those box lights less and less and just been using daylight lights above :)
I just dont see why couldnt they add 3.5mm hole under that cover too, theres plenty of room.
and i dont know about you but i would rather have audio input than mini hdmi output that is there
I agree. It should have been built in.
this is called marketing, in germany this adapter costs 60€, its internal for sure are put together in china for 2€....
+Mike D
So how come all the phones have this feature built-in? Even the tiniest Iphone SE has a built-in microphone input and can record better 4K than Gopro? The waterproofing is just a couple of pieces of rubber on the cover of Gopro accessory port. Most of the high end phones are waterproof anyway nowadays.
+Mike D
So what? The fact is that the waterproofing is nothing but a piece of rubber inside the device. Even an Indian engineer can design one. Gopro could integrate mic input into their device. You can clearly see the room for additional few condensators when you open one. So where is that "robustness" you are talking about? Since the public opinion is that Gopros are piece of shit cameras that have an unlimited number of stupid bugs and engineering mistakes.
+Mike D
So what exactly is your fetish with waterproofing of phones? I never said phones are waterproof at 10m.
I'm talking about the waterproofing of the accessory port of the Gopro since your original comment was doubting it was possible to offer a mic input which was waterproof because of the small space left for such thing. And the waterproof part of the accessory port is still a piece of rubber. There's ample space for mic input. Anyone can see it.
just out of curiosity: where is that accent from? :) thanks for the video btw. did you see any other, smaller, cheaper USB C to mic adaptor that works on the GP7?
Scotland.
I'm not aware of any other adapters that work.
I don't think there are any. Not only is it an A to D converter but I read it's coded in some way so that only the GoPro version will work.
That adapter retails for £50? Damn that's insane! Also they could've made it a bit smaller, its half the size of the gopro.
+evoGage Yeah. It's unfortunately the only way to get good audio with the GoPro.
Just wondering, do you think those generic type c to 3.5mm for phones without headphone jack works?
+evoGage I suspect they do work, but not sure about quality. Plus you wouldn't be able to charge the phone at the same time. I was tempted to buy one, but also knew I'd it didn't work I'd have to buy the official one anyways.
thank you , good test
Considering how cumbersome and unpractical this solution is, what about an external mic?
You'll need this to attach an external mic.
Kevin Muldoon Sorry, I meant like an actual independent recording device not attached to the GoPro itself :)
Yeah you could use an external recorder and sync in post. Might be a better option in some situations.
Kevin Muldoon Yup. Really depends what kind of situations you use the camera, but a cheap lav mic that goes to your iPhone might be a decent low budget setup.
Yeah that's a good option.
Yeah the reason it's big and expensive is that it's not just an adaptor, it's an analogue to digital converter. I read somewhere USB C is fully digital unlike old usb. I've ordered one from tweeks cycles too but they're still out of stock.
+SteadyMTB I wasn't aware of that. Stock levels can get a little weird just before Christmas. Just keep tabs on it. I'm sure it will be in stock soon.
just get a cheap mini jack to usb c ..you don´t need to have all original gopro periferals, they just play with beginners customers to over sell accessories
A cheap usb c to 3.5mm headphone hack won't work.
Cracking video, thanks.
El audio se escucha muy lejos.
Thanks bud!
Is there seriously nothing that I can use to record airplane audio with the gopro hero 7 silver? There is, but, I don't want to pay $100+ CAD for it. It's out of my price range...
Go pro external adapter sucks! I ONLY USE FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS AND AFTER THAT IT IS NOT WORKING 😡
Great video
I use my gopro5 to record kayak fishing trips...the on board mic is horrid, but using THAT brick thing is not an option at all, that'd be a lb of kit on top of my head ffs...Great accent btw, it seems I've watched enough shows/movies with Scottish accents to understand 99% of what you're saying!
+Cooking and Fishing :)
Yeah it isn't ideal. But until then improve the onboard mics it will be necessary if was t ok audio.
You should switch to the Hero7. A world of difference, much much better sound. I've bin skiing with it and the sound realy is acceptable...
Ulanzi v2 is a much better option for housing
I don't believe that was available when I recorded this video.
Its a great housing that keeps everything tidy! Its cheap too! @@KevinMuldoon
I'll definitely look at it in the future if I do pick up the mic adapter again.
GoPro needs to come up with a smaller way to connect a mic , huge difference with the mic 🎤 👏🏻👏🏻
Yeah it's a pain. Their default microphones are terrible and this is unfortunately the only way to improve audio.
What a difference
they coulda at least made it a braided cable.
Kevin
get the scissors out and trim an inch off the bottom of the deadcat

The issue with this microphone adapter is not even its price.. the real issue is why is it even there - not to mention the size of it. GoPro, just build that damn thing inside the next gen GoPro just like you did in old GoPros..until then I am sticking with Chinese action cameras who Allow this incredible function encapsulated in their cameras.. for the fraction of the price.
seriously whats up with the size of that thing?? How am I suppose to stick that on to the side of a helmet? idiots...
Thanks for showing I was wondering if it works before I spend the money on it
Good video and very informative! The audio isn't great on GoPro's but yeh I agree, it's too much money for an adaptor! Who do they think they are? Apple? 😂😂😆 . Where did you get the casing/housing? That looked smart and very handy.
I got it from Amazon. There's a fee different options available.
@@KevinMuldoonok cool , I'll have a look fella. Have you tried the normal looking usb C to audio jack on your gopro by any chance?
I tried it with my GoPro 6 and it didn't work. It needs the official adapter, unfortunately.
@@KevinMuldoon ARSE.... That's £1.99 I'll never get back 😂
I bought the adapter. You right. waaayyyy to expensive for what it is
It's a rip off.
I hear so many problems with the sound from people, I can only say I must be very lucky because the sound is very good with my camera, hero 6. I have also seen some nice ways of using velcro to attach a mic adapter to the case. I guess its a case of perseverance with a budget mentality in mind. Thanks for the tips.
you´r welcome Kevin!
+Wilson Lee There is maybe a way around it. I'm not sure. But it didn't appear to work. It's pricey, but if you want good audio it's essential
