      Seems obvious that the LP Special can do anything the Coronet can do, and more, due to the second pickup, dual tone and volume controls, as well as a 3 way toggle switch. I thought the P90s in the Gibson were slightly better off the bat.

      Well...The absence of a neck pickup on the Coronet means no magnet pull where the strings resonate the most so the Coronet is loud...I own a LP Special too but I play my Coronet more often...

    Coronet sounds great. Both do but I'm going to get a Coronet. It has the neck profile I dig, the P90 I love, and they are light and balanced.

    This was a lot closer than I would've imagined. The LP sounds slightly clearer using high gain in my opinion, but the Coronet is no slouch. The Les Paul squeaks by, however if I only had $400 to spend on a guitar, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the Coronet and be 100% satisfied with the purchase.

Also, I've yet to be disappointed w/an Epi. I've several good ones in my axe "arsenal" (working musician.) Not only are they good instruments for cash spent, most are easily upgraded if desired!

    The Wilshire might've been a closer apples to apples comparison thanks to the second pup. The LP sounded warmer, but I think having a neck pickup in the mix might've leveled the playing field a bit. Good demo, though!

  • @Matt-1d
    @Matt-1d 3 года назад +2

    They both sound and look great. I prefer the LP Special because it has more mid-range presence while still letting the high frequencies ring out. But the Epiphone was a little more articulate when you were playing finger style. I preferred the LP when you compared them with the highs rolled off as well. Also, I really dislike the look of SGs, but I could easily go for one of those Epiphones instead.

  • @stephc4427
    @stephc4427 Год назад +2

    The Coronet's slightly enhanced high end might be due to the absence of a neck pickup. Pickups exert pull on the stings and it could partly be why the Special is a just a hint attentuated in sparkle. Of course the caps/resistor values and the impedance and quality of the pickups all have a role too. I've owned a 1974 LP55 since 1983 and a Coronet is on the way.

    There were at times slight differences and at other times they sounded the same, in my opinion. If I have to pick one over the other, I am going with the coronet for a couple of reasons. One, being that I just ordered a Coronet today. Two, and this one is painful, many many years ago , I owned a 1962 Coronet that I traded for a different guitar. Turned out to be a decision that I have regretted! Owning a Coronet again will be a stroll down memory lane. Thank you for the video.

    They sound so close I’m sure you could get them identical with EQ. The Coronet has the Epiphone p90 pros, which are the same as in their version of the TV yellow LP special, in soap bar form. I can’t afford the Gibson but I do have the Epi. Hands down my favorite guitar ever. I can hardly put it down. This comparison gets me thinking about an Epi SG special with those same p90s…

    I own the Epiphone model of the LPS. After trying the Gibson, I decided that the Epiphone was enough for my needs and I invested in some EQD pedals instead. I simply love that guitar and how surprisingly versatile it is. Thus, needless to say that my favorite one here was the LPS because of the quality of the clean tones, but I must admit that I am quite impressed by the Coronet!

    The Coronet has the old three-on-a-plate style tuners with press-in bushings. When I tried one, there seemed to be quite a lot of play in these tuners, and the tuning ratio felt quite coarse. Have you had any problems with these tuners? In every other respect it seemed a very good guitar for the money, but I can't abide a guitar that won't hold tune.

    Both guitars are both killer looking but that Epiphone is a visual standout. The tones are so different I could justify owning both. If I had to have one, and cost was no issue, the LP Special has a more consistently useable tone with more mids and obviously more versatility with two pu’s. But I do dig the scooped mid eq the Epiphone brings. It’s a killer tone just more specific this probably not used as often as the Special tone. If funds were not issue, I could see having both.

    I think, like the Fender Esquire, a single pickup guitar emphasizes the harmonics, where the Tele and the LP Special emphasize the fundamental of each note. The Epi rings more and squeals more, but the LP is smoother and has more punch. Obviously, the LP is a superior guitar, but the Epi is probably better at stonkin'.

    Tuning stability sounded like an issue with the Epiphone. I could hear a warble when clean tones were being played. For that reason alone, I'd buy the Epiphone Les Paul Special instead. Probably has the same pickups. Plus I've learned, single pickup guitars look cool, but you lose hum cancelling by not having a middle position (unless it has humbuckers).

    Les Paul Special. Hands Down. TV Yellow is cool, A big Epiphone logo on the pickguard is not. I admit the Epiphone was a little more cutting in the upper mids, but It lacked some of the body that the LP had. You can EQ something out of a sound, but you can't really EQ it in.

    Listen to Humble Pie Rockin at the Fillmore if you want to hear what one of these is supposed to sound like. Steve Marriott used his for years.

      Saw them open for Ten Years After at the Los Angeles (Inglewood) Forum in 1971/2 (those years blur together!), with Marriott on the right side, Peter Frampton on the left. I didn't know who they were at the time, but got their records after seeing them - Frampton's lead playing was brilliant. Ten Years After was great too, it was the "A Space in Time" tour - my favorite recording of theirs. I've always wanted a Junior, but getting an Epiphone Coronet instead now. I already have three LP Specials, 1999-2000-2001, humbuckers-P90-Firebird pickups. I may get a fourth LP Special, because I want to get some TV Jones "T'Armond pickups", which are like the early Dynasonics used on Gretsch and Guild guitars. I don't like the maple cap on LP Standards, it makes a harder tone, while adding weight and cost - I prefer softer, warmer tones.

    The coronet sounded better lisening through FRFR monitors. I also own both guitars and I play the coronet daily. Its a solid slab of Mahogany and they used CTS pots and a orange drop proper. The volume and tone are more versatile and something about a dogear model they sound better to me. Plus everyone has a LP i am so tired of Les Pauls. I like that you don't see a coronet in everyone collection. I also like rarew rigs. I own a 66 Vox spitfire that i had custom pups made to fit original housing. its 3 singles offset w a bigsby made by Vox and its short scale. Nych like a Jag I play that alot as well lol. But of course Strat and Tele are my all rounders

    Hey epiphone if you read these comments , you did this right. In hindsight you should have put this one in an USA made line, people love this guitar and price

    The Les Paul wins! You stated that the Les Paul playing experience was better so I vote for the Les Paul. The guitars had such a similar sound that it has to come down to playing experience. 400 bucks for that Gibson sound is a great deal, but it’s really just competing with Squiers. Basically the same sound as the Fenders, but not at the same level with finish and parts. If you are just getting into the game it’s great equipment, but when you’re buying a guitar that you are going to play for the rest of your life build quality and playability become very important.

      It would certainly sound different. Better is always subjective.

    • @pharmerdavid1432

      It already sounded almost as good as the Gibson pickups. I would change the wiring-pots-caps before changing pickups, because that often makes more of an improvement for much less money. Changing the pickups without changing the pots-caps-wiring doesn't make sense to me anymore, but I have several guitars where I did just that in the past.

    Both of these amps were simulated, yeah? I haven’t gotten to that point. Much to the annoyance of my neighborhood. I’m sure they love the drums more though. 🤷‍♂️ there’s just still something about a tube amp. But I really love the boss katana series too. So....

    • @guitarmovies

      Nothing beats a real amp, but I don't like amps at bedroom levels. So I went the software and headphones route.

    • @MatthewFant

      @@guitarmovies yeah. 100% that’s why I like that they started doing power output levels. Where you can still max it,
      And not go deaf. I feel like it’s splitting hairs though, as there’s pros and cons to everything. I’ve played piano since I was a teen. When I moved out, I found out insanely quickly, how impractical an acoustic piano was, and learned to live with a keyboard. But I digress, back to amps. I thought I heard of a solution where you could run the amp head into some kind of box, and into a computer. @agufish uses this to demo amps, since he’s a apartment guy. Maybe a subject of a future review, maybe not. 🤷‍♂️

      @@MatthewFant That's interesting. I'm guessing the head is running into some kind of audio interface but I've never even thought to try it. I'll see if I can figure out his set up.

      @@guitarmovies assuming you already have a descent workstation setup to run the software for editing and running the guitars into, it’d be a natural next step. If there’s any amps you absolutely loved anyways. For me, at the moment, I’m loving a lot of the stuff Orange amps is doing, and I find myself using a vox night train g2 that I snapped up off Facebook marketplace.
