In my experience, 99% of the time when a bike doesn’t have a title it’s either stolen or the person who bought it never paid the loan off. Never buy a bike without a title. Unless it’s 75 years old and The fuel lines look like pubic hairs.

That sounded like a sting setup for the second bike seeing if you would buy stolen property do to the fact that if the guys stole it there's no way they would of met you by a cop shop much less allowed you to drive it there to get it checked out and the fact they walked by the window and it took awhile for them to fully check you out before releasing you it was definitely a chop shop sting

They probably just know the cops don't do shit about it. I had kind of a similar situation and when I talked to the cops they told me it was a civil matter and they wouldn't get involved. They really just can't be bothered about theft or bikes in general.

My grandpa’s 1999 R1 got stolen, then ended up ditched at a gas station THREE YEARS LATER with TWO THROWN RODS. One of which was sticking out of the engine. The piston for that cylinder was wedged sideways. It was quite a sight. I tried to pull it out, but was unsuccessful. I have a video of the carnage on my channel, WAY down the video list.
$1000 and a weekend later, the bike had a used engine in it and it was back in action.

You’ll always be detained when they don’t know what to do. And you’ll be there until someone has balls enough to make a call on it.
So many of them just don’t know the law.
I once took a bike I had owned for years and decided to put it in a custom frame. Well, now the bike has to be re registered to the new frame VIN. I knew that.
I take the completed bike in for inspection and title. As luck would have it, the experienced person who normally does it is out.
So now I have 2 people that don’t know squat trying to do it. The guy was decent, the girl was acting like it was all stolen and she was about to solve a crime. “ where are the receipts for all the parts? You have to have receipts!” I said “ look, here is the MSO for the new frame, here is the title for the original bike, I took everything off that bike and put it on this custom frame, that is where the parts all came from”. She stands there a minute, then grabs the existing title and stamps it “ salvage”. I said “ what are you doing? That title stays with the old frame!” She says “ oh no, you’re not pulling that two bikes with one title stuff”...WTF... I said “ what am I supposed to do with my frame now, I can’t sell it or use it?” She says “sure, it’ll just have to be built with a salvage title now”. ... yup, got screwed. Now I have a 1973 HD frame from a ex police bike and it’s worthless. Now? I register every bike I have and keep tags on them, yes it costs a bit of cash, but they can’t salvage what appears to be a drivable bike to them. I can show the registration instead of the title and tell them THATS the bike the parts came from. They don’t need the title as proof of origin if it’s a registration it’s gtg.

I had a guy try and sell me what he claimed was a 1970 BMW r75/5 for $2500. Not a bad deal at all if the bikes in good shape...but he didn't want to actually show the bike. Alarm number 1. I'm like, no site unseen if he had a title or a Bill Of Sale from the previous owner because at this point it was a 40 year old bike. Paperwork gets lost, I go a grand but not any more than that.
Couple days go by and the guy calls me, says he can meet me with the bike, we arrange a time we're both off work and he's going to meet me in a church parking lot close to my house. I've got street parking and a little spot next to the house where my wife parks so the church had a big empty parking lot cool I can walk over and if the bike isn't running half a block isn't to long to push it to the house.
I walk over, the guys late. 10 minutes goes by, 15 goes by. I call him no answer. I call his house no answer. I get a call from a number I don't know and it's dude. He's driving, he missed my call his wife dialed for him. He's 10 minutes out. Cool.
10 minutes goes by and a car pulls up and its just dude. We go through the pleasantries and everything and he goes ok so $3500. I'm looking at him and look around...no bike. I said we settled on $2500 and you didn't bring the bike. He goes well I need 3500. I'm not agreeing to that. I said if the bikes mint I'd go 3 but no more. He said fine, he's going to take me to where the bike is because he didn't trust meeting me in a parking lot because he's been robbed before.
So another alarm bell. And no wife, not with him, no bike. He's trying to get another grand out of me...just not going down hill fast.
He wants me to ride with him. I said no tell me where it is and I'll get my truck and trailer and meet you there. He says fine but just me...and I went sure. Which as soon as he gives me the adess I text my brother whose at the house hanging out and tell him we're headed out and to grab his gun. (He's just out of the army at this point and carries everywhere.) So we pull up and it's a trailer park. And not just trailers but like cheap run down campers with out vehicles pulling them. And in the back of a nicer looking one with a big dodge is this BMW. My brother and I get out and dude starts wigging out.
Just you, whose he, this is bullshit. We're trying to rob him...he's yelling. No wife, no truck bikes sitting under a tin roof held up by 4 posts and some bailing wire.
Finally get him to calm down. My brothers talking to him, they're smoking I'm looking at the bike and it's not flat 1970 r75/ its an 81 r100. I walk over the guy and tell him this isn't the bike. He starts losing his shit. I don't know what I'm talking about, get a mechanic he'll tell you what the bike is...I know what the bike is. It's stamped on the engine r100 and I know it's an 81 because I know old BMWs.
So he's yelling he calls a guy, and by this time an older guy comes out of the trailer with a shot gun. He comes over and asks if he can help us before I can open my mouth dude drops his phone and starts running. Goes to hop a fence but the fence falls over as he's pulling himself up so he's down...done. I explain what was going on with the guy who actually owns the bike. Come to find out be bought the bike from my Grandfather like 10 years earlier...and I knew it looked overly familiar when I saw it...so we both call the cops. They come out, dude is still laying next to the fence he broke. They talk to us, talk to the old man talk to the guy. We point out his car...and he's got bags of meth, a Tupperware thing filled with pot, two needles. He's got a gun in the car but just a clip on his person.
So cops come talk to us one more time and apparently he tried telling the cops that he's undercover FBI and we sold him the drugs. We tried selling him the stolen bike and he's supposed to be investigating undeground fight rings going on at the trailer park. Come to find out the trailer park is just a salvage yard the guy owns. He parts them out and the nicer ones he rents out for people to go camping with.
So dude's in the back of the police car screaming he's FBI, we're drug dealers and theifs...the cops are all going to get fired.
So they leave the guy asks me how ky Grandfather is doing. Is he still working on BMWs what ever asks for my number, gives me his number. Couple of days goes by my grandfather calls me. He said hey my old r100 is sitting in the drive way I need your to get it on the table to look it over. I drive out there. Dudes there with his trailer we're talking...bikes perfect. Guy goes how much was he trying to sell my bike for and I said I think we had settled on 3k if it ran. He originally said 25, and then he wanted 3500. Guy goes I paid 2,500 for it. And he's got a new Corbin seat on it, everything's been detailed. Carb was rebuilt. It had been repainted...he said kid you're grandfather always treated me fair, I like you and your brother I'll sell it back for 2500 plus the seat which is like 600. I said deal, paid him the 3100 bought a bike I absolutely loved when I was kid and a hell of a story to go with it.

Only thing similar I have is I bought a 2000 400 EX from a dealership mind you, had a title etc blah blah blah. It was a year old when I bought it, frame had been painted yellow (from red/black) and all white after market plastic. I got a decent deal on it, rode it for like 2 years and put in a barn at a friends house one weekend after riding because I didn't feel like loading it up that day, come back the next weekend and *Poof*! Stolen.
I call the cops, they come ask me for the title, I show em and then they "detain" me for possession of a stolen quad! I was like WTF?? Long story short, it was stolen 1 month before I bought it from a dealer who never ran any checks on it, they bought it super cheap from some dude, I came in the same day and saw it, the rest is history.

I was the proud owner of a 85 Honda Shadow 750. I got it and put about 2k into it and while I was at work my bike disappeared. The cops said their is most likely no way I will ever see my bike again. That was 20+ years ago and I have lost the title and I finnaly gave up on my bike ever coming home. It is nice to know their are still good people out their who will still try and get the bikes back to their owners. You have a great day and god bless.

When buying a vehicle with no title I use a free Vin checker and also call a local bonded title company to verify they're able to get me the paperwork with no issues. Pretty simple and straight forward. It takes about 1 month to get the title from dmv in Texas I spend on average 300-600 for this process.

It's a percentage game, the more bikes you buy the increased risk, although in all honesty I think the percentage is pretty slim unless you seek out stolen bikes per se. I had a scooter stolen but I was actually quite happy about it as I hated the bloody thing, Gilera Runner 180, hateful piece of shite. At least I was then able to get a proper bike after that :)

And that's why i really prefer an at least semi-central authority for some things.
We have a federal office in germany which handles all registred vehicles, you can check the VIN online for crucial information like recalls or if it's stolen and a new "title" (we call them Brief/letter) for an old bike did cost me around 35€ 5 years back...

I had a similar thing happen to me once. I bought a dirtbike (CR250) from a guy and his kid in the Summit parking lot (Im sure you know where that is in McDonough, GA). No titles, but it's a dirtbike. I was young and stupid and didn't give a shit at the time. I did check the VIN to see that it was there and not covered or anything. Figured everything was kosher. Rode that bike for over a year until the chain broke on me one day and cracked a giant glob of JB weld off the engine case that I had not previously noticed. I felt pretty dumb when I figured out the engine case ALREADy had a huge hole in it from a chain and it had been JB welded over. So it's sitting there leaking with no chain and I notice the VIN on the engine has been defaced and is illegible. My heart sank, but I was young, didnt have the money to really do anything about it. That bike got stolen out of my shop a few months after that anyway so Im sure it's been stolen a dozen times since then because that's what happens to dirtbikes in Georgia. I learned a lot from that experience...

Friend of mine bought an XR500 Honda that had been desert raced at some point in its life then later shipped into the UK from the states it was a real nice bike and had loads of grunt and for what he paid for it it was a bargain. He came around one day not long after buying it and we went out on it two up for the afternoon to go see his dad ... we never got there. On the way over we got pulled over by the local law and on checking the bikes registration number it came back as a stolen "Datsun 120 Y" (we just stood there looking at each other in total disbelief).
We were both arrested and taken to the station and the bike was picked up by one of their vans and transported back to the compound at said police station where it was securely locked up whilst being "investigated". We were put in seperate interview rooms and both questioned for around two hours before being locked in the cells to "decide how long it was going to be before we decided to come clean and tell the truth".
I swear to god those cops were as thick as P*g Sh*t to say they were a complete joke and totally incompetent would be the understatement of the century they couldn't find their own Ass with both hands .. nor tell the difference between an XR500 Honda and a Datsun 120 Y, IDIOTS after about seven and a half hours we were both released as it had been noticed by one of the cops that someone had carefully peeled one of the sticky decals off the alloy reg plate and re fixed it upside down so it read differently and just happened to be the same reg number as the stolen Datsun ... some outing THAT was.

Did not have to be stolen, people often fake vin and body numbers when they find a perfectly fine or easily fixable car that was unregistered and signed for scrap by insurance while their car is still legally registered but got crashed or rusty or the engine git damaged badly. The same could happen with bikes. My uncle has actually found out his Citroen he bought from an official Citroen dealer, it was used as the dealership's fleet car, had a faked body number xD

When I was active duty Navy I bought a bike from an officer. Transferred title to my name with no issues but when I eventually sold it to a friend, we discovered the VIN didn’t match frame/title. Can’t trust anyone! We got it worked out, but it just sucks.

I almost bought a stolen bike and it was from a dealer too. Noticed the ignition was ripped out and a couple other things wrong with it including the title was missing. It was a nice blacked out Triumph Bonneville with low miles and only $3500 but I had to walk away from it. Its best to walk away when you notice shady things. Ive had to walk away from a lot of bikes! Believe it or not the best legit deals I found on bikes was buying dealer bikes sight unseen off the internet. Takes more guts to do that especially when you drop over 10 grand on a bike you never seen before but its worked out well and they delivered the bike right to my front door.

The first street bike I bought was a 2007 R1 (Black/Grey) Brand new off the showroom floor. I dumped a lot of money into it in aftermarket parts and shortly after moved to Houston TX. Fast forward 6 months after moving. I fly back home to MT and a couple of days later my friend and roommate is calling me to let me know that my chained up Bike was stolen out of our gated community. A few weeks later Insurance cuts me a check and I go buy another R1 that looks exactly the same. Two weeks later a Police Detective is calling me up to say they recovered my bike along with 45 other stolen bikes. Turns out a very successful guy who didn't even need the cash was paying young adults to steal bikes then parting them out. (Mine was still in one piece minus minor body damage that happened in the course of the theft) I notify my insurance company who doesn't have a local office in Houston. They asked if I would be willing to pick up the bike and hold it for them, I did so letting them know I was also moving back to MT which they were fine with seeing as they have an office 150 miles away from my home town. Pick it up take both bikes back to MT and wait...a few months pass haven't heard a word. I call my insurance company and they inform me that my rep no longer works for the company as he moved on to a higher paying job. They get me in touch with a different person and they agree to come and pick up the bike. Over a period of 3 months they keep changing the date and time that they will come pick it up then nothing. I called them 3 more times since and no one has ever gotten back to me. Its always "We will contact you later" This was back around 2008-2009. To this day the bike is still sitting in my dads shop waiting for them to come get it! lol

Another thing about buying bikes (or any vehicle/vessel) with no title; they are very likely still not paid off and it is illegal to sell or buy mortgaged property! Not only will you lose the bike and your money, you could face legal charges as well. RUN, do not walk, run from a bike with no title! If its a lost title that's another story and the owner that lost it can easily go to Tag Office with you and submit proper paperwork with no hassle; if they won't then RUN!

  • @stevenrix7277
    @stevenrix7277 Год назад

Always make sure to check the VIN # and buy the bike with a bill of sale if there is no title. Lots of people might lose these titles, it does not mean the bike is stolen. Also the bank sometimes can put a lien on the bike even when the bike has been paid off because the original owner never did the paperwork. And finally even with the title signed over to you, you still have to pay sales tax.

My own brother hung a stolen bike around my neck. I had to go overseas & parked my bike & car at my dad's house. Well my brother took my bike out to some party where it was stolen. Knowing that he would be in hot water he stole a bike of same make & model. Then after my discharge the first time I saw the bike I said that's not my bike. And after riding it I put it up for sale. Then a week after the sale I'm being arrested for selling a stolen bike! It was kind of odd that when my brother saw me selling the bike, he suddenly moved to Colorado several hours later on the spur of the moment. He knew what was coming down & I was fresh out of the jungle of Vietnam. He ran, but I got my man several months latter & and I know he saw God only because he lived through it.

Couple weeks ago selling my 2020, title in hand, on CycleTrader. Out of state guy, offers full asking, but gets completely sketched out when I want to meet him at bank of his choice for cashiers check straight from teller so they can also notarize (required in my state, same way sold my last bike). He insists cash only deals, not interested in walking in bank, starts texting me articles about how cashiers checks aren’t safe, told him no thx. He then gets angry, felt weirder, walked away & sold the next day. When doing deals make sure there’s a paper trail & a camera near the transaction, too good = not worth the risk

Man, I was once servicing a bike someone had just got off craigslist. We always ran the VIN to see if there are any recalls etc. This thing had a piece of sheet metal glued over the VIN plate with a phony VIN (that traced to the correct brand but wrong model and country) scribbled into it with an awl. Peeled that thing off and ran the real VIN which was still legible underneath, it was reported stolen. At that point I let my service manager know, rolled it off of my lift and washed my hands of the situation. We had to let the customer and the authorities know, never knew what the rest of the story was.

From what you have said, you were VERY lucky! You basically broke EVERY RULE of used-car/bike purchasing on BOTH...and you walked away without jail time! You NEVER buy an 'undocumented' vehicle, EVER! No title, no consideration, period! You have a title-in-hand, you CHECK VIN against frame stamps, engine stamps, etc. You buy ANY vehicle, you not only get the title, you get a WRITTEN BILL OF SALE TOO! (in most states, that Title means NOTHING, but a written bill of sale with signature INSTANTLY validates you did NOT steal it!)...when you get a Bill of Sale, they MUST sign it, and you MUST have their Driver's License number (or other State or Federal I.D. number on the BILL). You check their ID visually...no card, no sale! If you are so hard up for a purchase you violate these points, you deserve what you get! When someone keeps saying 'I bought this $10k Harley for $50 and a bag of chips...I don't sit there and think, 'wow, wish I could have gotten such a great deal'...I think 'I wonder who died so this bike could be stolen for a simple drug fix?' Think like this...and you'll quit 'looking away' when you have to cross the 'T's' and dot the 'I's' on simple legalities!

I've had this happen. But there are legal workarounds if you have the original vin and the original bike with stamped vin isn't reported stolen. It's complicated but possible but it depends on the state you register it.
