This is very true. What sets me apart is I am licensed and certified, as well as registered with the state. The industry(dealerships) unfortunately has made people think that rebuilt always means ''bad''.
I bought a 14 Honda cb1100 with rebuilt title for $2500 with 2400 miles on it. Advantage is that you don’t have to worry about it and just enjoy it. I ride for little then my right hand started getting numb after 30 minutes I’m not sure if it’s my age or what but I sold it for $4k.
I’ve been lucky to have owned a lot of different bikes and sell them for a profit making their ownership essentially free for me. I’d love to buy a 17 CB1100 that bike is definitely on my dream list with a plan to keep. Right now I have a 09 Yamaha Tmax that I’m really loving riding and commuting on. I may even keep this one longer then one season
Thanks for the warning, I won’t buy the bike. I do think it would be hilarious if twenty years from now it’s still sitting in his garage because we all listened and none of us bought the bike!
You MUST know your state laws.Once understood,it's just a process. Also helps to know what to look for on a wrecked bike.I've purchased bikes that have been keyed and insurance companies deemed the damage to be 80% of the bike value,so they issue a salvage rebuildable title. Insurance companies will disclose the reason for total loss.
Different states different requirements for salvage titles. Here in NC in my city it takes 25% of the vehicles value (even says on the titles) to salvage a vehicle. Vstars are not valued at much so 25% isnt much at all. Add up labor paint and a gas tank boom 25%.... I buy and sell and part out salvage vehicles from the auctions for a living. I currently ride a salvage title zx14 theft bike that was laid down. I myself don't mind buying salvage title anything if I can see the damage. I don't like buy "other sellers salvage rebuilds" because they throw some plastics or bumpers on the thing and hide the underlying damage. Also Getting a salavage title vehicle on the road is simple here. If I buy a salvage title wrecked car (still wrecked) from any other state out of NC, I can bring the title to the DMV and get an automatic tag as long as I have insurance because they grant you a 1 year inspection being its from out of state. so just because its hard there doesn't mean it is here. so that bike could have been wrecked and rebuilt here and ended up there because we have no big rules about putting them back on the road. I love buying good stuff for 1/4 the price but thats just me!
I bought a 98 XL1200C in Fawn Grove, Pa. it had an R title because it lunched the motor. The guy I got it from never touched after getting it from an auction. The cases were fine and I rebuilt it. Virginia issues me a clean title because the bike was worth more here and saw no reason to issue a salvage or rebuilt title since there was no frame damage.
I got a V Star 1300 tourer about 2 years ago, and I love the thing. That's going to make somebody a really good bike. By the way, my V-Star makes bike number 38 for me personally. Not counting dirt bikes. Anyway I'm not sure I would rate it as a beginner bike, more of an intermediate. It's very user-friendly and easy to ride but even with the low center of gravity it is kind of heavy. And that could catch a new rider out pretty quickly. I would at least recommend New Riders invest in a set of highway bars for those low speed learning drops. Lol
A couple things of note. If a bike does get a salvage title and it was stolen the VIN number was in a database indicating that the bike was stolen. In the event you get pulled over it’s very possible that the VIN was not removed from the database. At minimum the bike will get impounded and you’ll have to fight it out with the courts. At the worst, you’ll be arrested too. It’s up to you to make sure you know where the bike was stolen from and that it’s a clear VIN. Usually you can take the VIN to a police station and they can check it for you against a national database. Do this before buying the bike, even if you are buying from a dealer. Also, make sure your insurance will cover a salvage title vehicle. You’ll almost never get comprehensive coverage on the bike. Also, it’s nearly impossible to get a loan for salvage title vehicle. Think about it. A salvaged Ultra Classic CVO Harley Davidson would still book out at 18 to 20k. Better have cash for it.
most states to total a vehicle is around 70-75% damages compared to value. in Nebraska if you fix it the title goes from salvage to "prior salvage" if someone spent 10 minutes with a key vs your paint that would total most bikes
The VStar 1300 is an awesome bike, I put 33,000 trouble free miles on my '07, which I just traded this year towards my dream bike, an Indian Springfield. The VStar 1300 is a very underrated bike.
I agree these bikes are underrated. I have a ‘07 I’ve put 63,000 miles on and never had a single issue. Just change the oil and tires. Even has the original battery still.
@@lp6wo , What a coinkidink, my 07 Vstar 1300 also had it's original battery when I traded it in this year. Not only that, But I never once put it on a tender during the winter time, treat the gas and put it away after the first snowfall, (usually in November and only if they put salt down) and every April it would start right up after half a crank. 13 years on the same battery, unbelievable. Great bike, hopefully its new owner will get as much joy out of it that I did.
My bike 02 VTX1800C. Totalled for a drop. Minimal damage was done.... There's pics. Rebuilt title which is street legal hear. Down side yep it's rebuilt. Upside? Brand new Honda crate motor 2000 miles ago. New custom paint. PC3/Hypercharger Cobra exhaust, new shocks etc. You get the idea. I looked at quite a few "green title" bikes, some with less miles. In the end all the info I got from the dealership including the Carfax or whatever the pics etc. It was by far the best deal. I'd buy it again.
Can't speak for PA but I've bought over 30 salvage title bikes. I used to be an insurance adjuster and we were basically instructed to just total bikes as it was a much better deal for the company. Of all the bikes I adjusted only a handful ever went in for repair. In SC and NC salvage or rebuilt titles are treated like normal titles with nothing special to do and no inspection required. I'll gladly save 25-50% of the going price for a salvage title. Only one of the ones I've bought ended up being not easily fixable and so it was parted out. Still got my money back. And I've never had a problem getting full coverage insurance on the salvage title bikes I own, 3 currently.
Wow, I was going to buy that bike, but I'm glad you steared me in the right direction . Wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft. pole now. Thanks for the advice Sean.
You can usually go back to the original salvage company and find the exact reason the bike was salvaged. Always check the frame especially the welds. If there is paint popped of the welds you can be sure there was structural damage aka bent frame. That doesn't mean it's up repairable. People are shocked that some bikes are salvaged that do not appear to have significant damage. Bike parts can run up price wise quickly not including the labor to repair. Also check with you insurance company to be sure they cover salvage titled bikes, not all insurance companies will insure them. Also the coverage will be significantly less should you have a accidently. Retail wise they bring about 50% of normal retail as a guideline. Sometimes a little more or less depending on the market and availability . I have owned quite a few and as long as you check them out well you should have no uncommon issues and you save a few bucks to boot !
My salvage bike = laid over a new CBR600RR after a couple months back in 2010. 1 livable fairing crack, but the scratched/ gouge in the frame was the reason for the total. Nothing bent though. $800 to buy it back from the insurance company after they paid it off , a new clip-on and throttle tube/cable - been riding it since.
I've put clear title wreaked bikes back together. Good bikes, put together right, rode them, then sold them. Did not do it to make money, but I did make money. Did it because I could buy the damaged bike so cheap and I've been working on bikes since I was 11 years old. I enjoyed working on them.
Just a story to share...I.bought an 03 Harley Road King. I have performed all of servicing. It is now 18 years old with 79,000 miles clocked. Here is what has been done to this bike: oil and filter changes @ 3000 mile intervals, 3 batteries, 4 sets of rear brake pads, 3 sets of front brake pads, 6 rear tires, 3 front tires, 2 windshields, one headlight, and nothing else. Still has original irridum sparkplugs. Timing chains and tensioners were checked @50,000 miles and showed only slight wear. I use 20/50 Kawasaki lawnmower oil, 140 wt gear oil in trans, and Lucas primary oil ( also changed every 3000 miles ). This bike has never failed me. I intend to ride it for the rest of my life. Everyone tells me that they have never heard of a story like mine. Has anybody out there had as good luck as I've had with my bike? To me, this has been the best money that I have ever spent. Not even one bolt has came loose....
I bought an R title bike from Utah, the bike had been stolen and rebuilt by a friend. Registering and insuring it in Alaska was not a problem, and selling it later in Texas was easy too. Sounds like a Pennsylvania problem.
Probably wouldn't get this bike but if you're a new rider looking for your first bike. I would definitely give a salvage a chance. Ride it for a few minutes. Check that all the gears work. It doesn't act funny as you pick up speed. The engine is smooth. Etc. You're probably going to drop it anyways. Trade it back and forth between friends to get used to riding before buying a good bike. Get some good use out of it. Just make sure it gets checked out by a mechanic or a friend who knows what they're doing
Why do you say that the 1300 and 950 are a huge step up from 1100? The 1300 has like 8 more horsepower and under 20 ft lbs more torque, and the 950 only has 50 horse and tops out at 90 mph
Agreed...bit of an over exaggeration, and I also remember a video of him on an 1100 saying "not that much of a difference between 1300 and 1100" Common problem with salesman is forgetting what they said in the past.
If that's a Tour model, couldn't it have stock hard/soft bags? That and the dents on the tank could easily put that thing near resale value of they got damaged during a theft, insurance wise.
I paid $3500 for my '07 V-Star 1300 3 years ago. But it had 70,000 miles on it. I've put another 4800 on it and it's still running better than the day it came off the assembly line. Mainly because of the hyper charger and power commander I installed on it.
@@martincvitkovich724 Looks better than most Harleys. Doesn't matter if it's a "squashed Bug out of a Godzilla movie" or just a good ole incredibly reliable Yamaha cruiser platform.
Not a US citizen, so all this title stuff you've got going on there is really strange to me. But if the bike was properly rebuilt or repaired, got inspected and was declared road worthy again, why don't they just drop the whole R-title malarky and issue a new, clean title? We have a sort of similar thing here, if a vehicle has a WOK-status, you can only get that sorted by taking it to a specialised inspection, where the vehicle is checked to see if it still meets it's homologation criteria and therefore can be re-registered under it's certificate of conformity. Or it can have to have an individual inspection done, which when passed yields a new certificate of conformity. Either way, as soon as either inspection is passed, the WOK-status is removed from the title and the title is essentially clean again.
I’m UK so things are different maybe. I crashed my bike and was very seriously injured. I wasn’t fit enough to sort the bike out and it was just easier for me to have the bike as a right off. There was possibly not much damage. I just couldn’t physically or mentally sort it out. So maybe this bike has the same story?
I buy all my bikes from salvage auctions. The insurance company will salvage a bike for tipping over or light scratches. When I’m ready to upgrade there’s always somebody with a clear title wanting to trade for my newer lower mile bike. Then I just sell the clear title bike and repeat.
Totally had to get an R title from Maryland and I live in PA. What a pain in the ass. You can’t even get the title transferred until it passes the enhanced inspection. I got it done with my F4i and it was all good and done and now the fork seals are leaking, so I bought a Harley from my local dealer and all is well lol.
Southern Pennsylvania has some great roads with scenery to ride, my wife and I have rode around the Gettysburg area a number of times and haven't found too many roads that are not nice to travel.
My salvage title bike was a disaster, I feel like all this headaches took 6 months out of my life it could have been enjoying riding.. I bought a salvage title truck in 2020 got inspected it's been great and I got it for a third of what truck sell now with covid prices.
I'm thinking the other way around lol. It's already been approved in PA, but if you live outside of PA you may have to go through the process again to satisfy your state??? I don't know. Sounds right.
R u entitled with a R- title? Great ,honest video ! In certain state's once r- title clock ticking at 9 year date period bike can't be sold for streets ,parts or salvage only! Beware do the math-homework.
My car has a rebuilt title. What was the cause? A deer ran into the door and quarter panel. Fixed the door and quarter. Just cosmetic damage, no physical damage. Took it to the Louisiana State police office had them look at it got the paperwork. Went to the DMV. Paid them im good.
Actually buy a salvage title if you have the skills to rebuild. A guy bought my 08 Road Glide with 15k mikes only to tear out the engine and replace it with a hot engine he built. Not for me though.
I could see possibly buying an R-title if it was a historically significant bike like an old Indian or something, other than that there are thousands of bikes for sale with few(er) issues
I’d run it through DMV just to see or have someone run the vin through a PD. I know a few ppl in NJ. I’d buy it and find out how to flip it for my use. I’m looking for a 1300 or above.
Long ago, I bought a rebuilt truck hit in the side and insurance totaled it. FOUR wheels...ok, but no way EVER would I ride a TWO wheel wrecked motorcycle, lol!
So if someone in Ohio bought this bike would they get from you guys a bill of Sale that we could use to prove to Ohio BMV ownership and use that Bill of Sale during the inspection of the motorcycle? Or would Ohio want to see something fixed?
My dad's 2004 1100 Vstar got t-boned at a stoplight and it broke a 2-inch piece off the rear fender and it got totaled. I wanted to buy it back at the auction but needed a dealer license or whatever. They gave him $4,000 for the bike and he paid $2900 at least.
Your dad should've been able to buy it back from the insurance company before it went to auction. Most of the time you have to ask your adjuster. The insurance most likely will receive a wholesale/auction value for the motorcycle. If you ask/agree to buy it back they sell it to you for that amount.
I buy crashed, salvage and insurance bikes and they normally can be fixed like new for under $300. Junk title can be a trick but it can be done. The best value is a salvage bike 50% is about right so always buy these bikes. Worst possible advice is to NOT buy this bike.
Too much money in my opinion. Look around on FB Market Place...you can get one for not much more that's not an "R" title....just my opinion...I wouldn't pay that much for that bike with a salvage title. Here in Ohio theres a dealership that sells nothing but salvage title bikes. Check out there prices, it's called Racers Edge..
I was on CycleTrader and the bike was listed on Racers Edge with you guessed it, salvage title, no wonder the price was lower than most. Took a look at their listings and most are titled as such. But there was no mention of that on CycleTrader 🤔
I have bought at least 10 salvage bikes from Racers Edge (mostly Harley’s). I fix them like new and ride them until I want to do another project. I’ve sold most on Craig’s List at a discounted price or traded back to Racers Edge. They are good people! The bikes I by from them have a Ohio Salvage title. One I do the repairs here in Pittsburgh, I take the bike to a local enhanced inspection shop. They do all the paperwork and take the required pictures for the state and send it in. About three weeks later, I get my rebuild title. Enhanced inspection is about $280.00. Never a problem with getting insurance.
I've bought and rebuilt multiple salvaged bikes. If you're even slightly mechanically inclined it can be a great deal. The paperwork can be a bit of a hassle but if you're saving 40-60%, it's worth your time.

It's not just about horse power. the 1300 and 950 are both fuel injected and are more reliable bikes.
Go ride one and you ll know what I mean
Agreed...bit of an over exaggeration, and I also remember a video of him on an 1100 saying "not that much of a difference between 1300 and 1100" Common problem with salesman is forgetting what they said in the past.
If that's a Tour model, couldn't it have stock hard/soft bags? That and the dents on the tank could easily put that thing near resale value of they got damaged during a theft, insurance wise.
I was gonna buy this bike, but I hear ya bro "Dont buy this bike!" got it.
I paid $3500 for my '07 V-Star 1300 3 years ago. But it had 70,000 miles on it. I've put another 4800 on it and it's still running better than the day it came off the assembly line. Mainly because of the hyper charger and power commander I installed on it.
That's one of the better looking Japanese Harley-D look alikes!
You are saying it looks like a motorcycle
@@martincvitkovich724 Yes, it doesn't look like a squashed Japanese insect out of a Godzilla movie!
@@martincvitkovich724
Looks better than most Harleys. Doesn't matter if it's a "squashed Bug out of a Godzilla movie" or just a good ole incredibly reliable Yamaha cruiser platform.
The two dents in the fuel tank could be the result of a sudden stop. Was the seller a soprano?
as long as it runs and looks good go for it.
It is said that until now, every morning, when he wakes up, he says: "don't buy this bike."
I love your name .. where u at ?
@@johnsullivan5101 Europe, and it's not my real name obviously.
Friend bought an awesome sport bike with an R title, engine seized a week later. 😕
When Caleb did the walk around, I was tempted then and even more so now.... I would have to sell one of my other bikes first, lol
Totally had to get an R title from Maryland and I live in PA. What a pain in the ass. You can’t even get the title transferred until it passes the enhanced inspection. I got it done with my F4i and it was all good and done and now the fork seals are leaking, so I bought a Harley from my local dealer and all is well lol.
if it runs good , why not buy this one?
Southern Pennsylvania has some great roads with scenery to ride, my wife and I have rode around the Gettysburg area a number of times and haven't found too many roads that are not nice to travel.
My salvage title bike was a disaster, I feel like all this headaches took 6 months out of my life it could have been enjoying riding.. I bought a salvage title truck in 2020 got inspected it's been great and I got it for a third of what truck sell now with covid prices.
Yamaha makes good bikes. I have a 2006 V Star 650 and I've been waiting for it to die so I have an excuse to buy a new bike. Still running strong.
Unless you neglect proper maintenance, you've got a long wait ahead.
I've got 187K on my '04 1100.
It seems like you should buy this if you live in Ohio, but not in Pennsylvania.
The bike is street legal and already approved in PA
I'm thinking the other way around lol. It's already been approved in PA, but if you live outside of PA you may have to go through the process again to satisfy your state??? I don't know. Sounds right.
@@patrickteal6261 you have to get inspection to make sure it not stolen that's all
Whoa! It went rainy all of a sudden at 2:09 and then back to sunny
R u entitled with a R- title? Great ,honest video ! In certain state's once r- title clock ticking at 9 year date period bike can't be sold for streets ,parts or salvage only! Beware do the math-homework.
Those pipes sound great.. man👍
My car has a rebuilt title. What was the cause? A deer ran into the door and quarter panel. Fixed the door and quarter. Just cosmetic damage, no physical damage. Took it to the Louisiana State police office had them look at it got the paperwork. Went to the DMV. Paid them im good.
Meant to say no mechanical damage.
Where are you getting a 7 or 8 yr old VStar that looks like it came off the factory floor for $300 ?
You should add text graphics that fill the screen that say “DON’T BUY R-TITLE!” every time you say it. 😉
Actually buy a salvage title if you have the skills to rebuild. A guy bought my 08 Road Glide with 15k mikes only to tear out the engine and replace it with a hot engine he built. Not for me though.
Haha I’m so confused! Should I actually buy it or are you being serious? Should I buy the bike?
I could see possibly buying an R-title if it was a historically significant bike like an old Indian or something, other than that there are thousands of bikes for sale with few(er) issues
What's the big deal if your just going to ride it???
I look at the neck for cracks or welds. Also can't you car fax a bike to find history?
No, you'd look for it on Bikefax. :D
The guy who says don’t buy an R title bike is the one selling it, amazing.
Could you ask the state for a purchase history? Not sure how those things work.
Why cant i get in touch with anybody at srkcycles?? Been calling since last week, sent emails and nothing.
Text me 717.395.8892
Where are y'all located
Looks nice. Should I buy the bike ?
I'm just watching this video just to hear him say "DONT BUY THIS BIKE" lmao 🤣🤣
My my be like: Don't eat all them cookies.
Me: I'm eating ALL them cookies.
So would a buyer be able to get the info to show what was wrong with it? If not, it'd be hard to value.
So we should buy this bike?
Srkcycles
...So...what would you advice about this bike ?...buy ?...not buy ?
I had a 09 vstar1300 and or a old short person it fits really well and comfortable I've been from maine to Wyoming with no problems
I’d run it through DMV just to see or have someone run the vin through a PD. I know a few ppl in NJ. I’d buy it and find out how to flip it for my use. I’m looking for a 1300 or above.
So.....should I buy that bike?
Sooo what you're saying is don't buy the bike.?
Srkcycles has used the reverse psychology click-bait with such frequency I have decided to not ever buy from them
In my experience I have found that the religious types are the people you have to watch out for.
give it to a brother from Ballkans Europe Kosovo Pristina, yall have a brother for life..
But the important question is should I buy this bike? :)
If you wanted to buy that motorcycle for a spare to loan to a friend so you could ride together that would be the perfect bike.
Hey does this bike have a clean title?
It would have been a better video had the carfax report been pulled to see if there was further information on the R title.
Police seizure perhaps? I know here when law enforcement seizes a vehicle from drug dealers those vehicles get a salvaged title.
PA has bike inspections? That sux.
take a shot every time sean says 'r title' or 'don't buy this bike'
Nicole Higgins I’m buzzed
What am I shooting at?
I'm wasted now
Before you buy an R title, call your insurance company. Mine refused to cover a Mustang GT I was looking to buy solely based on the recovered title.
Probably more likely to happen with a car, because if improperly repaired it wont protect you correctly in a bad crash.
Long ago, I bought a rebuilt truck hit in the side and insurance totaled it. FOUR wheels...ok, but no way EVER would I ride a TWO wheel wrecked motorcycle, lol!
If your buying a salvage bike buy a Harley, people customize Harleys so much the amount of original parts out there for sale cheap is ridiculous.
Why didn't you ask the person that you acquired it from?
Prolly got it from that huge auction hall a couple weeks ago
So if someone in Ohio bought this bike would they get from you guys a bill of Sale that we could use to prove to Ohio BMV ownership and use that Bill of Sale during the inspection of the motorcycle? Or would Ohio want to see something fixed?
So I shouldn't buy this bike???
you just blew through a stop sign.
Only natural laws are worth following
Till your organs are on the outside of your body
Can motorbikes have airbags?
Best Harley I ever had was a Road King that I built from a totaled Ultra..
so a bike falls over insurer written off and U can't register it ...crazy
What's wrong with the v star 1100. My dad has one and it rides and runs better than my roadstar.
Wait ... so you're saying we should buy this bike?
In Texas all you have to do is pass a safety inspection and your good to go.
So i can buy that bike... bring it to dallas and that’s it?
That sounds pretty sweet....
Great video and advice, thank you!
I wouldn't mind having that for the engine... to put in my golf cart. LOL!
Why did you buy it then?
Probably cause he jokingly offered $800 and the seller said "deal".
If you ask/agree to buy it back they sell it to you for that amount.
boricuaoc not in Florida apparently
Yeah I've looked on Craigslist and you can find alot of cheap metric cruisers for under 3k.
I fix them like new and ride them until I want
to do another project. I’ve sold most on Craig’s List at a discounted price or traded back to Racers Edge. They are good
people! The bikes I by from them have a Ohio Salvage title. One I do the repairs here in Pittsburgh, I take the bike to
a local enhanced inspection shop. They do all the paperwork and take the required pictures for the state and send it in.
About three weeks later, I get my rebuild title. Enhanced inspection is about $280.00. Never a problem with getting insurance.
Can you get the information on it from Pa DMV? Someone has a history on this bike.
R title aside
Lovely bike 🏍
