    I actually started on Days of Ruin and went back to play Dual Strike later. Dual Strike was fun, but I appreciated the changes they made with Days of Ruin. Dual Strike was over the top, had swingy gameplay, and didn't take itself seriously enough. Perhaps DoR swung back too hard in the other direction on that, but it had better gameplay balance and they really nailed the CO system (plus I actually really enjoyed the soundtrack). I think if they ever get back to this series again, they should definitely keep the gameplay aspects of DoR, but the setting could be a bit lighter than "post-apocalyptic world and also a deadly disease."

    Commenting as I begin my watch here, but my favorite part of the series was the audio-visual aesthetic as well! Every C.O had an appealing look, and the fact that they had a different soundtrack for each one made playing as different characters extremely fun. I played a recent title called Tiny Metal and had a pretty good time, but found it lacking because there was only one C.O. you could play as, and it got stale pretty quick.

  • @VestedUTuber
    @VestedUTuber 6 лет назад +44

    Regarding Days of Ruin, I agree that the characters are mostly forgetable relative to the previous titles, but then there's Waylon, who is THE Wars series' iconic douchbag, and Tabitha, who has spawned so many jokes about her being Sturm's daughter rather than a Calder clone because she has Sturm's powers.
    And as for the support system from FE, of course the developer is unsure how to implement it - because it can't be implemented. The support system relies on two things: 1. leveling up characters who 2. have a developed relationship with each other. The closest Advance Wars has to anything to unit leveling is unit ranks from Days of Ruin, and units in Advance Wars usually don't last more than one battle anyway and are just faceless mooks.

    I enjoyed the review quite a bit, but I have a few suggestions to you for the future.
    1. Polish up your pacing. Sometimes, there are long breaks where there should really be none, while at other times there are no breaks when they would help the script to sound considerably better. For example, from 3:54 to 4:10, you have several longer pauses that interrupt the flow of the speech and make it more difficult to tell what you're trying to convey. Between the words, "viable," and, "giving," there is a long pause which denotes a new sentence, when in actuality it continues on for significantly more time. The same happens between the words, "down," and, "without." Cleaning up the pacing would make messages more clear and make the video sound much nicer.
    2. Clean up the script a bit. At a few different points in the video, you abruptly stop a sentence, play a short clip, and then sometimes even pick right back up with the same sentence. This feels very choppy. One notable example is early in the video, at 0:33, you take a significant break to show a unit firing in Into the Breach. This feels very out of place, as nothing insinuates that you would show this short intermission. After all, the other three listed games had nothing of the sort. This breaks the flow quite a bit and would be better left out in my opinion. Other script mishaps are just grammar issues, but they are almost never noticeable enough to significantly detract from the viewing experience.
    3. Be more black and white with your sentence structure. some moments, with the most egregious example being at 1:14. You state that, "First, I'll be focusing on the mainline Advance Wars games." This can mean two things. One possibility is that it means you are clearing one thing up, in that you would solely focus on the first three games, and the "first" would be denoting when in the video you say the fact: early on. The other possibility is that the "first" would mean that you would focus on those three games at first, but transition later on. The script heavily leans towards the former example, but the latter ends up being true. Combine that with the title and you would expect to see praises towards the first three games only, but instead half the review is taken up by criticism of Days of Ruin and the series' future. While this information is somewhat interesting, it has little to do with the title of the video and the first half. This leads me into my fourth point:
    4. Stick with your original intent. The first half of the video is very strong, going from relevant topic to relevant topic in a clean and logical manner. However, once Days of Ruin is brought to the table, it more or less abandons this idea entirely and, from then on, only criticizes DoR and compares it to earlier games. This has little to do with anything established in the first half of the video and even the title. This video reeks heavily of a timed school essay where the first half was on-point, but then the writer runs out of ideas and has to quickly fudge in more ideas that connect with the main topic enough to get a passing grade. If you were always intending to incorporate DoR so heavily, then the first half of the video should have led up to it a lot more, as well as the video should not have been split into two halves. As it stands, the video is clearly split at just past the halfway point.
    Most of these more lacking aspects will simply be ironed out with time. You'll write better scripts and speak more clearly. However, it's important to consciously take these points into account during writing, allowing a more natural writing process. Most important, however, is planning ahead. Point four discusses this in detail, but the messier writing could have been avoided with more planning. Making an outline of the points you want to cover on paper and then starting scripting would allow for a much more focused review, as tossing out ideas that don't work is much easier earlier on. All in all, however, the video is still a good time to watch, especially for the first part.

    I would like a new advance wars. One with dual strikes art style. And days of ruins balance. Yeah you heard me. Well. More balanced. I'd like the CO's to work how they did in days of ruin where their co bonus only effect the immediate units next to them with the co powers of the dual strike series. But one thing I don't want back from dual strike is dual strikes... Or the double CO's as it is. That is broken as hell and should not come back at all.

      I'd love to see the old cast return in a new game with some balancing tweaks. I love the series but the 1st 3 games were about as balanced as a table with 2 right legs... the only problem with days of ruins co system is it makes everyone feel the same (especially on large maps) cause CO bonuses effect such a small area. The best middle ground in my opinion is to keep passive map wide bonuses but on a smaller scale with the CO unit system granting a much better buff. So for example Grit's passive would give a small boost to indirect units but only the units in his CO zone get the extra attack range. That seems like a nice middle ground between the 2

      In developing a game, you have to prioritize what you can and can't do... and given that Days of Ruin was a radical departure for the series, I'm not surprised that they didn't include all the modes from previous titles.
      However, the reason that the Nintendo Wars (that's the overarching IP that Advanced Wars and Battalion Wars are a part of) hasn't had another entry yet is Nintendo's policy when it comes to entries into a franchise they own, more specifically adding new gameplay to each franchise's basic mechanics and fix problems in previous entries of the series. The entire Advance Wars series is actually a showcase of this within a small span of time: Advance Wars 1 built the mechanics and systems and put them into a handheld (which were derived from the previous entries of the Nintendo Wars IP and stripped down to basics and balanced), Advance Wars 2 improved on the systems, and Dual Strike (which would be considered the LEAST balanced game in the franchise) decided to mix things up a lot while Days of Ruin went 'back to basics' due to balancing problems of the previous two entries.
      Usually, Nintendo only puts out two games per console generation per IP unless the IP was selling like hotcakes (i.e. the Mario IP) but with the caveat that each game in an IP has both basic mechanics and systems while adding new ones to keep the gameplay able to be picked up yet still fresh. Basically, Nintendo has been doing what is called 'IP Health Management'... which is a fancy word of not running a franchise to the ground or leaving it to obscurity, a balancing act that is incredibly difficult to begin with.

Well worth the effort. I liked the new COs in Dual Strike apart from the Black Hole ones but the whole TAG battle thing broke all semblence of strategy. When the opponent activates a superpower, then another superpower and gets to move twice with EVERY unit. It gets broken very quickly.
    Still, Dual Strike added some much needed units. The megatank, the stealth, the carrier and the cruiser could finally attack other ships. Naval combat was suddenly functional and interesting.
    I really want newer games in this series, in the meantime. Check out Wargroove. Heavily inspired by this series as the creator was disappointed in the lack of sequels.

    Just a fun fact, Advance Wars started in 1988 as Famicom Wars while Fire Emblem started back in 1990 both for Nintendo. Of course the first few were Japan Exclusives at the time before emulation though. I don't think I've met anyone who has played one and didn't know of the other though but I wouldn't doubt it if that was the case.
    Days of Ruin was definitely my favorite though since it was the most balanced of them all. I thought the soundtrack, story and dark tone was great let alone the characters. I did miss the charm the other titles had after awhile but was kind of hard to go back and play them due to each of them being super un-balanced one way or another.
    I recently started playing through them all again though and been having a blast, might get my 8 year old in on it. I kind of hope they make a new one eventually for the switch cause it's been 12 years now. Hell I wouldn't mind if they just re-released them all on switch instead, especially if they added online matchmaking.

    I played Advance Wars so much back in the day, and have never once picked up Fire Emblem. Didn't even realise FE was that sorta game, always assumed it was a final fantasty type thing, haha. Really loved the old design of AW, with the character designs and bright colours. Been playing Wargroove recently, which was heavily influenced by AW but has a medieval setting, really enjoying it so far. Again, got a lot of good character designs and bright aesthetic. Plus there's doggos.

    I liked days of ruin, it was super fun to play, plus I think it needed the dark turn to take that one game break and make everyone else realize how much they liked the happy go lucky feel of the previous games. Either way it will be one of those games I keep in my collection longer than the older advanced wars. That said if a new wars game is made, I hope its cartoony again, and also I hope they take one specific idea from days of ruin. The CO in the unit. I think that would be a great way to help balance them co powers. Let their effects be as wild as they use to be. But make the co have to be in a unit close to the front lines. Atleast that is my opinion.

    People always talk about how "dark" and "gritty" DoR is. Honestly, I don't think so. It's just the setting that's like that; Brenner's Wolves are more often than not upbeat and trying to see the best out of a situation, even when backed into a corner, and the War Room is absolutely hilarious in every mission but the last. If you haven't gone back to DoR because "it's too different" give it another shot and enjoy the irony of Forsythe giving advice on how to kill his men "like it were a game".

    Advance Wars is very similar to the PC game Panzer General, but it had a charm the latter game didn't. This was strange since combat is richer in Panzer General and more balanced. I always wondered why until now. I guess it is the cartoony style and the COs that gave Advance Wars its charm.

    Companies too often don't understand what made a game series attract players. Taking the cartoon out of Advance Wars was trying to go for that "wider audience!" angle without understanding the reason it's attracting an audience was because it was unique in the market. Companies need to realize that going after the already occupied markets and leaving behind the one you established is not a good idea.

    Perhaps, if they can make a new advance wars game right now, they don't have to think too much about the extra content. Add the same extra content that Dual Strike had and just expand it little by little. Give us a customizable nation in terms of looks, colors and COs, but gives us a limit so that we don't have as many as Black Hole as. Good and decent CO powers that we can deal with but no too overpowered that makes the already other memorable COs feel like pushovers.

    What killed Dual Strike for me was the CO powers. They would give the AI so many more units than you and losing units would give them more CO powers so it was endless wave after wave of enemy CO powers being used against the underdog. It really made the campaign a horrible slog since it stacked the deck against the player. I liked Days of Ruin because they got rid of that nonsense and drastically scaled down CO powers and made COs a unit in the field that could actually be targeted and taken out.

    i love the Advance Wars series, except for the first game. it's decent but man do i have some issues with it. the problem with AW1 is the fog of war levels, they are terrible. not only are there too many but most of them are not well designed. if there's 1 thing i can praise the sequels for it's how they greatly improved on fog of war. not only do they have a more reasonable amount of fog of war levels but they're also all far better designed.

    I actually REALLY like days of ruin.. don't get me wrong the originals had the most charm imo, but dor was an awesome new coat of paint, and the super tropey predictable story was the right amount of cheesy for me. It still had awesome moments, the the first time I heard Waylon's full theme I had chills.. also when wills theme debuts I thought that was pretty hype.. agree they cut out way too much features..no idea why, maybe pushed the graphics too much? Campaign wasn't the greatest length either..

    • @MrMarinus18
      @MrMarinus18 3 года назад

      Really? I feel dual strike is way more tropey like with the bad guys joining the good guys and how that went down. I find myself way more invested in the characters of days of ruin. Not just because of the more serious writing but also the presentation is far better. They have a lot more expressions, there is way more music to set the tone and they have far more backgrounds. Sigismundo is indeed pretty goofy but I do think it touches on real theme's of war and unlike previous games it does do them justice.
      The campaign of Days of Ruin is longer than any previous one and also is paced way better. It's much larger with multiple twists and turns. Also unlike some other games where they put a teenage boy in charge of an army I really felt it was earned in days of Ruin. He had been with the army a long time and they had already proven the other leaders were unsuited.
