I got to see them years ago at the long lost Bottom Line in NYC. Sat right up against the stage just a few feet from Trey and was blown away by what I heard that night. Really stunning.
Discipline is NOT an end in itself... remember... it is a MEANS to an end. Trey has picked up the ball and is moving it forward from where Fripp last dropped it, lol... this is unbelievably good, whether or not he borrowed a theme from KC.
Very tight work, Trey clearly taking after Tony Levin's work on the Chapman Stick (the Warr Guitar & the Chapman Stick are similar....). I'd like to see Trey do more of this clean austere style.
I've been listening to both this and 'sheltering sky' and to be very honest, I cant figure out how one can call this a ripoff of 'sheltering sky'. Good tune. The drummer is the pick of the lot on this tume. He can play both the tabla and the drum kit and sound good. Incredible.............
As a jazz musician, I think rock fans have something to learn from jazz. Jazz artists borrow and trade licks all the time, that doesn't mean they're bad or unoriginal, they're just using ideas of others to build upon their own, just like in this song.
@shelterit Honestly I cant fiugre out. Anyway listened to this after a good few months, and thanx for bringing me back to this wonderful piece..............
Cannot agree with the opinion, that Gunn's musikc is focused on technics and maths. Maybe, i am crazy, but I think that this is the music art of hi-leveled emotions with great emotional spectrum. It doesn't means that this is hysterial and that is not intelligent, I think it's both, and it makes Gunn's music unique.
Gunn is a very emotional player he just happens to blend emotion with a playing style that is technical and compositions to match the marriage of the two. I agree that his music is unique for this.
Met Trey and Pat after a King Krimson show here in ST Louis -- two nice guys and great musicians. How can they help but be influenced by Fripp and Belew?
I think this is beautiful. It sounds so cool. Listen to the tone of Tray's 10 string. Don't know a thing War guitars. Could the low string be 115 and perhaps up to a 13? Great syncopation too.
Yeah, man. And The construkction of light, dont you I think? I heard that that disc got bad reviews those days because of the dependance on Gunn's ideas.
Marvellously "crimsonian" if you folks will allow me to say. It's a real shame that Trey Gunn is so underrepresented in the music world IMHO. I love his early QUODIA stuff, but generally all his stuff sound crisp musical and precise, like a well played Back clavicembalo fugue :-)
@aliendogbrain I agree it is indeed pretty damn good as well as derivative.....but i would argue that Fripp has not exactly "dropped the ball" AFAIK... :-)
+opopanaxes FINALLY! Yeah, this band is a King Crimson knock off, though it's Discipline, not frame by frame. Frame by frame is that slow one. Discipline is the instrumental. Sounds almost exactly like Kuma.
Sounds like a combination of King Crimson and Gordian Knot! So wonderful!
I don't think I've ever been so mesmerized by a hand-drummer.
in my opinion, this is amazing music!
Love the tablas and percussions

Bravoo ,,poz od mikija iz zablja, vojvodina
Tremendo Trey Gunn !!
aargghh, musicianship of this standard just makes me so depressed! Just tooo good!
This is fantastic! Loving the overt KC influence.
A great song, for 1981.
This is music

de las canteras de KING CRIMSON...Tecnica,Insrumento y musico...deleite de armonias
Incredibly talented group. Thanks for sharing this rare live video.
great loop giger
amazing ,, a hero in so many ways
Bob Muller is a blast.
Hell Yeah!
As a jazz musician, I think rock fans have something to learn from jazz. Jazz artists borrow and trade licks all the time, that doesn't mean they're bad or unoriginal, they're just using ideas of others to build upon their own, just like in this song.
Is it a guitar? Is it a bass!? Is it both!!?? Gah--my mind is blown!!
@shelterit Honestly I cant fiugre out. Anyway listened to this after a good few months, and thanx for bringing me back to this wonderful piece..............
I hear a Steve Reich influence in here
Brilliant!
Good stuff!
@aliendogbrain YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
I hear some Waiting Man in there too...
Nice
@drhowarddrfinedrhowa I also hear a lot of "Waiting Man".

You're not crazy!
It is unique and powerful in the way it displaces the time and melodic motion. That is why it is hi-level emotional spectrum. You are so right.
Gunn is a very emotional player he just happens to blend emotion with a playing style that is technical and compositions to match the marriage of the two. I agree that his music is unique for this.
This guy is a spiritual leader apart of being a fantastic musician and also he was part of King Crimson, what could be better?
Sergio Salazar Agrreed
it's not a rip-off, it's a direct use of a king crimson riff from the song Discipline. it's done on purpose, it's fun
Met Trey and Pat after a King Krimson show here in ST Louis -- two nice guys and great musicians. How can they help but be influenced by Fripp and Belew?
lleva mucho de la canción discipline pero es muy buena
The only acceptable "warr"!
@achaarpickler Yes, why the hell isn't Bob Muller a friggin' superstar yet?! I simply love his chops.
I think this is beautiful. It sounds so cool. Listen to the tone of Tray's 10 string. Don't know a thing War guitars. Could the low string be 115 and perhaps up to a 13? Great syncopation too.
I hear Red, Discipline, Waiting Man
I'm not crazy. Good to know.
Put this guy together with Bozzio and Satriani. Please. Thank You. :)
Leonard Wenk what would satriani add to this? I would say put this guy together with Adrian Belew, that would make more sense
Variations on Frame by Frame, anyone?
Yeah, man. And The construkction of light, dont you I think? I heard that that disc got bad reviews those days because of the dependance on Gunn's ideas.
I don't understand the neglect towrds that album. It sits firmly in my top 5 KC records
@@ciudadanovivanco1 It is mostly the production, really, it is bad, but generally, people like the live versions of the songs in the album.
@audiotrax2000 KC and the sunshine band? What are you smoking? KC=King Crimson...
Also from Waiting Man middle section?
Somebody call Mr.Fripp!
I gotta say, Trey Gunn becomes his usual impressive when he gets to 3:20.
Wrong song. It's not close to KC's "Sheltering Sky", but it certainly borrows from "Discipline".
@aliendogbrain I agree it is indeed pretty damn good as well as derivative.....but i would argue that Fripp has not exactly "dropped the ball" AFAIK... :-)
King Crimson. But I dont mind.
Where the guitarist is in the background
no it's not. maybe you meant to say "Discipline" becuase it sounds like a pretty close rip off that one to me. Frame by Frame too.
Yeah, even has similar harmonic progression to Discipline. And the polyrhythmic feel mirros Discipline (This is in 7, that's in 5) as well.
Jacaranda meets Frame By Frame
+opopanaxes FINALLY! Yeah, this band is a King Crimson knock off, though it's Discipline, not frame by frame. Frame by frame is that slow one. Discipline is the instrumental. Sounds almost exactly like Kuma.
Warrs are so much cooler than Sticks imo
Absolutely. Guitars have a far more rock and roll feel to them after all
3 people that don't like it ,are not good at ''math" and love Justin Bieber
