    I love the DMR, but the idea that it fires the same round as all the Assault Rifles always bothered me. Think about it; a DMR can kill a Spartan with just 5 shots w/headshot, but the AR takes anywhere from 13-20, depending on model? The same round, but you need 3-4x the number of shots? Add to that the fact the DMR ejects 9.5x40mm cases, the same as the Battle Rifle, and I think it makes more sense that the DMR and BR were meant to fire the same round, but Bungie had a miscommunication somewhere. And that's not counting the fact that a 15 round magazine isn't particularly useful in an automatic or burst firing weapon.
    However, I just recently had a minor revelation that resolves this issue quite well. What if the DMR, when originally issued, WAS chambered in 7.62, but later rechambered in 9.5? After all, the 9.5 round was developed alongside the Battle Rifle, so obviously the earlier adopted DMR wasn't chambered for it. In fact, the DMR may have also been issued with the same magazines as the AR to simplify logistics, so that would mean it could be used practically as a select fire weapon. Then, once the Covenant War started and the effectiveness of the 7.62 round diminished, it would have been easier to adapt the DMR for the more powerful 9.5 round than try to ramp up production of the BR, which was a comparatively unproven design in the early years of the conflict. This would not only explain why the DMR in-game ejects 9.5 cases, but also account for the shallow magazine (15 single stacked rounds of 9.5 would take up about the same vertical space as 36 double stacked 7.62 rounds, I just did the math, so that would've been as many rounds as could have fit in the same frame) . As for why all 'official' sources say the DMR fires 7.62, well I figure that's ONI trying their hand at misinformation.
    That's my current Head Canon, at least.

      Honestly, the fact that the AR is chambered in 7.62 NATO has always bothered me. That is a large and powerful bullet, the fact that it seemingly does so little damage per shot and is able to squeeze 32 or 36 (never mind 60) into such a small magazine has left me bashing my head on a wall trying to figure out how they do it. There is also the fact that the 7.62 NATO is classified as a battle rifle round. They could have chosen any number of cartridges, not just NATO ones, since the UNSC controls all the nations on Earth. Having the AR be chambered in 5.56 (NATO), 5.45 (russian) or 5.8 (china) would explain the performance, due to those rounds lack of stopping power compared to larger bullets. And having the ammunition be telescoped-caseless like the SMG would allow them to carry more per magazine.
      As for the DMR, It definitely reflects the characteristics of a 7.62 chambered rifle better than the AR. Personally, If I had to pick a cartridge for the DMR myself, I would rechamber it to .338 Lapua Magnum. It is a much larger (8.6mm) and more powerful bullet.

      @@GrOuNdZeRo7777I think it's poor writing.
      My theory is that the assault rifle was meant to use 7.62x39, but writers at Bungie messed up and listed it as 7.62x51. Starting with its reintroduction, the AR performs like a 7.62x39 while the DMR performs like a modern 7.62x51 by comparison. If Bungie intended the AR to shoot 7.62x51 and explained its ineffectiveness as the covenant races being more robust than humans, then they should have listed the DMR's cartridge as 7.62x67 to reflect in game performance while keeping the .30 cal bullet diameter that the UNSC seems to like.
      The Battle rifle deviates from this trend by using 9.5x40 Kurz, kurz meaning short. Based upon the game art, the cartridge looks like it was formed by shortening a cartridge similar to .375 Ruger aka 9.5x65.5. Having the DMR use 9.5x65.5 ammo would account for its boost in performance over both the AR and BR as well as its substantially higher recoil, and continue a theme of the UNSC using 9.5mm projectiles for medium to long range support rifles.

That’s not a problem with the AR since you’re just throwing as many rounds at the enemy as possible, the BR is the same deal, you only have to be minimally accurate since it has a 3 round burst whereas with the DMR you have 1 shot and then you have to reset, hence the name Designated Marksman Rifle.

      Should have made it a bigger cartridge than the .308 WIN/7.62x51 NATO. In today’s terms, the .308 is a really powerful round, capable of defeating 3A body armor at 1000 yards, but is limited in its full auto use due to the recoil the round produces in modern rifles. Even the SCAR can only chug along at a fairly low rate of fire in full auto.
      But in the Halo universe, the UNSC has developed a rifle that can fire the .308 at 600 rounds a minute, a pretty substantial rate of fire. That leads me to believe that recoil control in this universe has advanced significantly. Enough for them to create a battle rifle or designated marksman rifle capable of controlling the recoil and kick of a bigger cartridge, like the 300 WIN MAG. Same bullet size, longer and more powerful cartridge.
      But I think the best candidate would have been the .338 Lapua Magnum. A fairly common anti personnel round, used by militaries all over the world today for sniping duties. It can pierce level 3 body armor (3>3A, I don’t know why, ask the boogaloo people) at nearly 1500 yards, and has an effective range on softer armors at 2000 yards.
      Sorry for the novel. TL;DR, should have been the .338 Lapua

    • @AKlover
      @AKlover 4 года назад

      @@11jerans IIRC .338 Lapua destroys barrels fast true also to a lesser degree of .300 WM. Most are not going to engage targets outside of their eyesight. • @11jerans
      @11jerans 4 года назад

      AKlover it absolutely does destroy barrels fast, because most barrels we shove the .338 into are designed to maintain sub MOA at 2000 yards. Give the barrel a lighter twist and the accuracy at those ridiculous ranges drops off significantly, but so does the barrel wear.
      As far as me using the range of the cartridge, that was more or less for demonstrating the ridiculous power behind the bullet, that it’s able to maintain super sonic flight at nearly 2 miles.
      The DMR as shown in game wouldn’t be a rifle that’s accurate up to 1000 yards even though the 308 can certainly do it, because the barrel is too short, and it’s not a free floating barrel, so I don’t think the UNSC would equip their soldiers with a weapon that can hit targets at super long ranges because typically those aren’t threats, but they would equip them with a rifle capable of delivering kinetic energy leaps and bounds more powerful than what is offered by other cartridges.
      A lot of militaries have done this when facing off against armored enemy infantry, like with the FAL. Chambered in .308, but without the heavy rifling and free floating barrel. They weren’t looking to get their average infantryman to kill at 1000 yards, they wanted them to deliver heavy hitting rounds at targets in the line of sight.
      Though, for the record, most modern militaries just use the 5.56 NATO for just about everything, since modern militaries are usually fighting terrorists or unarmored militias, and most of them can call air support to take care of any hard to kill targets at 500 yards really easily.

It seems to me just by playing the game, that energy shields are broken by a lot of energy, not necessarily speed. The 5.56 doesn’t have a ton of kinetic energy, but the 50 AE, which is essentially what the magnum fires, does, and the magnum breaks the shields of an elite faster than the assault rifle, which shoots the .308, a faster, but less energetic round.
      .338 has a lot more energy than the .50 AE, because not only is the bullet nearly as heavy as it, it’s also an order of magnitude faster. It seems to me that the .338 would pop a Major’s shields with just one or two shots as compared to 15-20 rounds out of the AR.
      I know I’m not an expert, how could you be in fictional technology, but in my opinion they should have rechambered the DMR in the life, but Bungie either miscommunicated something, or didn’t really care about the minutia of the weapons.

    42.9in from front to back. in a DMR style rifle, means the barrel is about, 35-38 inches long, which is crazy considering the maximum effective barrel length is 26in. make it a CQC style and shorten the barrel bringing it to around 18.5in would bring the over all weapon to about 22-28ish inches, the length of an MK18. standard rifle length. 42.9 inches is roughly 3 feet long.
    thats roughly the overall length on the L96A1/AWP. a full length sniper.
    Of course this makes sense being fit for a spartan but for anyone else its huge. and being chambered in 7.62x51which is the same thing as a .308 Winchester.
    thats a massive gun with an overly massive barrel. it's going to weigh alot (in which case makes sense for a spartan) but for a standard marine its going to be too large to use other then for long range sniping. Thats like trying to room clear with an L96A1, its crazy.
    ever since i started college for firearm science and technology I've wanted to build a real one of these, but not the 42.9in long version but a realistic version that we can actually use.

    The thing that I never understood is why 343 changed the magazine capacity from the 15 that Bungie made for it in Reach to 14 in every subsequent game. It's like, the DMR's always been a 5-shot kill barring a gametype settings change and/or there's not overshield or damage boost in play so it makes sense to me that a skilled player could get 3 kills with one magazine. But with 343 changing it to a 14 round magazine that's not possible. I mean, of all the possible changes to make to a weapon taking a single bullet out of the magazine's capacity literally makes no sense. I don't know if I explained what I mean well enough but I've felt this way ever since H4 came out.
