I seem to remember someone on Time Team saying that holed pots were ones that had been used as offerings, either to assorted gods or in graves, and they were holed to keep people from taking them to use, or something along that line.
I had a great time, it's not only a history video with this wild bunch, but a comedy act also. LOL Learn a little, and laugh a little, can't beat that. Thanks Si, and the team.
Interesting that you find Roman pottery with holes in the bottom. Here in the American southwest, a lot of ancient Native American pottery also have what are called 'kill holes' punctured in the bottoms. It is thought they did so for funerary use (placing over the head of the deceased) and that the hole allowed the soul to pass through.
Your bottle brush is actually a sink drain clog cleaner. You put the brush part down a drain and it will grab hair clogs so you can un clog your drains.
Thanks Si and friends. Bury Steve's hair out on the low tide mud flats and when someone digs it up they will think it's from the viking invasions.😉 better tie it up and tie a date tag into it.😁 You restored that bottle beautifully!

You will probably think I'm a heathen but the best find, for me, had to be the spongeware. So lovely, never seen that pattern before. Excellent job on restoring the Harrods bottle! 😀 x
Steve, that hole was punched out with a ball peen hammer or equivalent. That is why the hole is bigger inside where it and chips of material are blown out like the backside of a bullet impact. The other evidence is the clear 120 degree angles and the hexagon shape. It was perfectly punched out probably to use it for a plant when it wasn’t designed with drainage in mind.
Don’t worry Steve “Fabio” ain’t got nothing on you. 😀. You guys are a bunch of cards. Fun to watch. Love all the mudlarking adventures Si and those of nic white. Keep the videos coming. Cheers.
