    In this video, Dr. Berg talks about consuming diet soda in a ketogenic diet. Diet coke, coke zero and coke zero sugar have the same ingredients except for other sweeteners. It has aspartame which affects the gut, increase the risk for insulin resistance and diabetes. It also has caramel coloring where they heat sugar with an ammonia compound to produce an end product called AGE or Advanced Glycation Endproducts, which creates sticky proteins in the body.

    • @williwonti
      @williwonti 5 лет назад +37

      Correct. It won't kick you out of keto, but there are some people who claim that merely the sweet taste can raise insulin levels, but if that's true you can't have stevia either. In the low amounts present the aspartame and caramel color don't really do that much. Of course if you drink 2 liters a day, it might add up.

    I just had an interesting and fairly painful experience with diet soda. Generally I don't like the flavor of diet soda but I went into a store one day and I was Jonsing for something sugary but as part of my own "Put an end to my TII diabetes" program I decided to get a diet soda rather than go around the corner and get some ice cream which is what I really wanted. The next day I did the same and all of a sudden I had a one, two or three a day diet soda thing going on. I craved them the way I craved sugar. Then I started to develop joint pain in my knees and elbows. I did not associate the joint pain with the sodas but it had come out of nowhere. No injuries or illness. Then, one day, I had to stop at a hardware store to pick up some stuff for a job. They had a soda machine and along with the hardware I needed I also got a large diet pepsi. I had been feeling a little creeky but nothing I hadn't gotten used to. I went to work and about an hour and a half after drinking the diet soda the pain in my knees was so bad I could hardly finish the job I was on. The only thing different in my day was that diet Pepsi. So I quit. No more diet drinks. The elbow pain went away first. Then the pain in the right knee and then, after several weeks of really intense knee issues in my left knee it finally went back to functioning like normal. Again-the only difference in my diet was eliminating the diet soda. The left knee got so bad that I was taking Ibuprophin just so I could sleep at night. Then the leg cramps started along with random spasms. So I added several doses of Turmeric, potassium and magnesium and that seemed to help. The last week or so I have not had any of the supplements and all of the leg issues are gone.
    Was it the diet soda? I think so, but I am not going to test it out by drinking the stuff again. It's bad stuff to begin with, I don't need it in my otherwise healthy diet.
    One last note-my HbA1c is now down around 4.6----down from 6 last September and down from over 8 three years ago.

    Yup … I was drinking Coke Zero very frequently. I recently noticed that I was frequently urinating and losing eye sight. I am now type 2 diabetic and have hypertension. Here I was carelessly drinking eating and drinking zero sugar labeled products in general for at least 1 year. Thought my issues stemmed from some other issue like a swollen prostate and age ( 38 ) . Man was I an idiot for having trust in the food industry and I blame myself for not looking into this sooner .
    It’s been about a month and a half since being diagnosed. I started hitting the gym and increased physical activities in general. I am on several medications. I eat nothing but berries, eggs, leafy greens, avocado, chicken and fish. I limit salt intake to a negligible amount. NO processed sugar at all. I eat twice a day , three times if I feel really hungry. My portion size is now half the amount in comparison to my familiar amount. I have managed to go from 237 lbs to 224 lbs since the diagnosis. I feel a lot better but still have work to do. I am giving it my all and trying my best to reverse this horrible disease.

      Start water fasting, begin with one meal a day, then alternate day one meal a day and then go one prolonged water fasting, some people do 40 days, if you stay on a keto diet your fastings are easier. They reboot the system, People understand the need for sleep, muscle recovery, but they never understand the need for giving your ingestion digestion process a rest. Ofcourse consult your doctor, people like doctor jason fung and doctor pradeem jamnadas have done great contribution in this direction. Kindly heal yourself out of such diseases. When I did keto years ago, I literally ate as much as I wanted, and I drank as many diet cokes as I wanted, and after 3 months I was shredded. Abs sticking out. People thought I had cancer I was so skinny. And then I went back to carbs and I kept losing weight. My metabolism reset and sped up. It took me like 6 years to gain all the weight back (where I’m at today). I’m debating doing the keto diet again but now that I don’t live at my moms house I have to cook and I get grossed out cooking raw foods it’s like a phobia of mine so I’m struggling but would love to go back to the keto for three months to reset myself. I never fasted like he suggests I had my 2-3 meals a day at least and snacks and lots of peanut butter believe it or not. The calories were def high but I shredded and again I smashed diet cokes like they were going out of style. I don’t think you can just have a blanket statement with diets. Everyone’s body responds difffernrly . You can also get shredded eating only carbs. Bodybuilders do it they stay lean and eat carbs you need carbs to grow. You have to find a diet that’s a lifestyle and not something that’s temporary otherwise you’ll always get back to your original fat self

    If you are eating for health it seems that it’s smarter to drink only healthy drinks. Use naturally carbonated water and add lemon and monk fruit. It’s more refreshing, satisfies the craving for bubbly drinks, has vitamins, balances PH, reduces kidney stones, and hydrates your body. There are lots of ways to naturally flavor water or bubbly mineral water for less money, without preservatives, and without side effects. I know it’s hard to end the soda craving, but anything that is that addictive has to be problematic.

    May I suggest as an alternative to canned sodas, mix lemon juice, ACV, a touch of vanilla and about a half teaspoon of baking soda. This produces a reaction that releases CO2 so your cup might overflow. Yes, the ph changes from 4.5 to maybe 5.5 after the baking soda so you do lose some acidity of pure ACV in water but this is easy to make and satisfies that craving for a soft drink. Thanks to Dr. Berg for all his sharing.

    I have a question that seems to go ignored by the by the video doctors. So, I'm going to ask it again. Can you drink carbonated waters like AHA, La Croix or Waterloo that have no sugars or sweeteners while fasting? They have natural fruit flavors but zero sugars and no artificial additives. I'm not talking Tonic water which has 33g sugars and 33g carbs (i.e. Schweppes brand).
    Also, and I am not justifying anything, I have a cousin who works for coke and he told me that the amount of aspartame used in the Zero products is significantly less than the diet soda and that other natural sweeteners are used. I still don't drink them though, they give me headaches. I always thought that caramel color was just heated sugar. Never heard of combining it with ammonia. Either way, it's not good.

      Yeah, my cousin is married to a nutritionist and he somehow thinks being on a keto diet will give you ketoacidosis

    • @Shalom_Mike
      @Shalom_Mike 5 лет назад

      Ketoacidosis is the short form for Diabetic Ketoacidosis. It affects those who are type I diabetics. In healthy people, insulin helps regulate the production of ketones. If your ketone levels rise too high, insulin is produced to slow the break-down of fat (into fatty acids), inhibits the liver from turning fatty acids into ketone bodies and helps to make ketone use more efficient in the body. For type I diabetics they have to be concerned about Diabetic Ketoacidosis because they are unable to produce insulin which regulates ketone bodies in the blood.
      The only good test is a blood test. Breath and urine are extremely unreliable.
      0.5 - 1.5 mM(millimolar) - Low to Moderate Nutritional Ketosis
      1.5 - 3.0 mM(millimolar) - Optimal Ketone Zone (feel good for most zone)
      3.0 - 5.0 mM(millimolar) - Most graphs call this "Starvation"
      > 10.0 mM(millimolar) - Ketoacidosis

    I don't know about others but, I've been drinking it and test my blood sugar and ketone levels 30 mins, 1 and 2 hours after. Actually my ketone level goes up and blood sugar goes down. I don't focus on my weight but my tummy is smaller.

    Thank you so much Dr. Berg. NOW I finally understand the exact and true dangers of consuming Coca Cola and Coke Zero! I had a heart attack in February 2015 and survived, and I always knew it was the Coke Zero that was one of the major reasons I did, because for about 5 years prior to my heart attack, I was consuming each and every day, 2 to 3 liters of Coke Zero. I was drinking very little watch but sure slugging back the Coke Zero. I never consumed Coke Zero since my heart attack. I did consume Coca Cola but have since quit anything sugar including artificial sweeteners for about a half a year. Excellent video. 10/10+++++

      It doesn't knock you out of keto but is still carcinogenic to organs. I go on keto with aspartame but afterwards, not much impact as the sweeteners cause bloating

    Zevia is made with erythritol and stevia, and their cola flavor is clear :) A suggestion that may be a healthy option and a company to support that's doing the right thing.

    I love Diet Coke though I know it is BAD for me! I have known all about the aspartame, but this is a first on what I am learning about caramel coloring. I have always told my kids to not even get started drinking sodas, especially Coca-Cola.
    Thank you, Dr Berg.

    I do 1.5 ounces of Italian Volcano 100% organic lemon juice with TINY amount of stevia organic leaf extract powder in a glass of water for an amazing lemonade. 10 calories with 4 grams of carbs. Usually with each meal. Really refreshing and healthy and the lemon helps against kidney stones if you're doing Keto.

    I recently switched from Zevia to A&W zero sugar root beer and I’ve been feeling like absolute garbage. I did a week of very low carb and did a week of almost only steak and eggs and I’m pretty sure I gained weight because of the soda. I usually lose 10 lbs of water weight when I do this and the only thing I did differently was the soda, thinking it wouldn’t affect me because it didn’t have sugar. I’m 100% done with this crap now.

      Are you serious? Do you also have a cigarette as a treat every once in awhile? How about methamphetamine? Apologies for being so abrupt. However, the empirical data and evidence is solid. ALL THIS CRAP IS POISON! And certainly do not take my word for it. And you are naive if you listen to the manufacturers that make this poison. The same as cigarette manufacturers. Look for yourself. Educate yourself. Enlighten yourself. And most of all, be honest with yourself and tell the truth. "The truth shall set you free."
