Hey guys, fun video, I'm glad you enjoyed the book. I've been in Kingkiller community for over 10 years and its fun to see someone new with fresh thoughts. I'd like to share my thoughts on some of your comments.
Ambrose didnt get kicked out for giving Kvothe a candle because he is royalty, in line for the crown of a big country to the east. Money makes the world go round in Temerant as well.
Kvothe being stupid around Denna is just young love. He is what, 15, 16? No wonder he wanted to give her his hard earned Silver pipes or wanted to kill Dracus to impress her. He is still just a kid. Also, no wonder he thought at that moment that a pretty girl wouldnt remember him, he is putting her on a pedistal.
And while Denna *is* annoying, years ago someone pointed out that she is basically a female version of Kvothe. He hides his past, disappears to go on a random quest, he is doing *a lot* of shady stuff to survive, he goes around asking questions he shouldnt, he has feelings he wont directly confess... And all of that can be said about Denna as well.
Bonus question, who do you think her patron is?

Wow that’s amazing!! And thank you for taking the time, your points make a ton of sense! Didn’t catch that part with Ambrose and the young love part I guess makes a lot of that more understandable ;) been a while since I was that young! And very interesting though about the perspective (Denna and Kvothe being the same but from different perspectives) I wish we knew more of her story!
Good question… if I had to guess I’d say it was Ambrose or Ambrose’s dad or something… since he was there when Kvothe played first and she sang, it would make sense to me! But I could also be way off haha

Not all risk must mean death. Sometimes the risk is something more ephemeral or emotional, and, in that context, the ending has absolutely not been given away.

Now that you read it, I would suggest watching Captured in Word’s videos on these books. I liked the books when I read them, but after watching those videos I grew to love them

I'm the guy that said "Harry Potter for adults" but the first part where he's struggling to survive, reminded me more of Aladdin. Now the 2nd book, Wise Man's Fear is like 400 more pages of Name of the Wind, where he's at university, then he gets sent on kind of a quest, which leads into different situations that keep changing, which I call a "Forrest Gump" type book. It's like Forrest Gump plays football, then he's in the army, then he's a shrimp boat captain, then he's a ping pong champ, then he's running across America, all while this love interest is in the background doing her own thing. Same with Kvothe. Some people HATE Kvothe and say he's too overpowered or a "Gary Stu"/"Mary Sue" type of character, but in my opinion, if the character wasn't super interesting, there would be no reason to write a book about them. Now, 2toramble said that Empire of Silence (Sun Eater) by Christopher Ruocchio is Name of the Wind in space, and I just read it and agree with that. It's also very Forrest Gumpy. And I love when the main character has everything taken from them and the writer kind of tortures them, because it's like forging steel from iron. The best example of that is Fitz from the Robin Hobb books.

Love you guys, one of my best friends recommended this book for me then binge read the 2 books and I liked them well enough it at the very least left me wanting to know how this story he is telling is going to end.
Also I'm not sure of exactly how much Brandon Sanderson you have read but I just started warbreaker and would love to see a review by you guys,
On 3rd note another great series I heavily binged and I think you guys might enjoy is the lightbringer series by Brent weeks it has a good plot and a basic but pretty intriguing magic system
Keep up the great work guys I will always return to see yalls reviews

Thank you!! Definitely felt this way about the Name of the Wind for sure. Very interested to see what happens next!
And yes! Warbreaker is definitely on the list for the near future! I’d expect we get to it within the next few months. Definitely before we Read Oathbringer in preparation for Wind and Truth!

I’m still listening but one thing I was worried about after the first video is that the takeaway from the framing story with Kote is not that “he’s fine”. Yes, he’s a legend, but mostly not in a good way. Kote is supposed to be this powerful guy who’s fallen from grace. And the story is about how it all went wrong.
Overall, we’re basically in agreement… I think the book is fun enough. There’s plenty of set-up for mysteries and in the first book, there’s a lot of good scenes. I think the worldbuilding is relatively weak and the characterization is all over the place. Yes, the prose is good.
I have more opinions on this series, but I’ll keep those to myself for now.

In my opinion, all the things you didn't like get worse in the second book. I hope you guys get something out of it but for me it was a huge step down. Can't wait to watch that review

I read this book over a day and a half, couldn't put it down. When i read the last word on the last page, I needed to reread the whole thing immediately. That was a first for me. I loved the story, all the mysteries that need solving, all the call backs to bits of story that seemed irrelevant but turned out to be pieces of a greater puzzle. I felt like there wasn't a single wasted sentence written. I loved the way the music is written, the way he explains sympathy and going into heart of stone, and the emotional scenes. It's a beautiful and heartbreaking story. But Denna is so very annoying.

Oh guys, guys, as I’m watching, Jaden just proposed contacting PR, I don’t think this would be a good idea. He’s cussed at fans in their face for even bringing up book 3. That stress is part of what he’s not dealing with well.
Also, he has written a version of the third book, it’s just been in revision limbo since forever and he keeps re-working sections in order to make the story work. He’s the kind of guy who won’t let anyone read anything, until he thinks it’s perfect, and that’s a bar he apparently hasn’t been able to meet for himself.
If you guys are going to try to contact him, I would really recommend reading the rest of his works and reading up on a bunch of the controversies (like the Twitch chapter), before reaching out.

So I think you guys are missing a massive aspect of the story here. The whole point is that Kvothe is a failure. That he is telling the story of how he managed to royally F everything up. Part of his character/arc is that he is constantly making bad decisions and he is severely handicapped by his blind spots. So acting like Rothfuss is leaving plot holes everywhere is kind of disingenuous to me; Pat intentionally created a character that is a perpetual dingus. As shown by the shell-like state of present day Kote, it certainly seems like Pat is intentionally laying the necessary groundwork for all of these pitfalls to add up to something disastrous.
Anyway, fun review. Take care fellas.

If it exists, the “stupid main character” trope drove me nuts. The contrived dragon story at the end, clearly forced upon us for a need of an “ending” for the first book, with a terrible dragon, and Denna …? But I still loved the book(s), even the second time reading it. Loved his prose, except during the action scenes. Falls completely apart there. While the “stupid main character” trope continues, book two is so much better. For me, it also comes down to the prose, and it’s something I strive for in my own writing.

@@NextChapterYT uhm… I’m sure she’s supposed to be mysterious and the reason for bad decisions on Kvothe’s part. But I don’t think she was intentionally written so that the readers wouldn’t be able to stand her..
