The Kingkiller Chronicle | Vintas and the Significance of Rings
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 12 авг 2024
- While much of The Wise Man’s fear is spent in Vintas, there is good reason to believe that Kvothe will return to this place. One intriguing custom reflecting social status in the Vintish Court is the use of rings. But perhaps, the most significant mention of rings in the Chronicle are the rings Kvothe is deemed to have in the frame story.
This video contains spoilers for The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss.

isn't Kvothe unconciously forming a ring of grass for Denna , before he forgets how he wanted to 'tie the ends together' ? could be quite a metaphor for their complicated relationship
NIce catch
I've never needed a book so much in my life like I need The Doors of Stone.
I feel ya
So true
God it’s been so long that I’ve been waiting for it I’ve read the other king killer books so may times
Auri found an amber ring in the underthing. She didn’t give it to him yet. She said that she didn’t want to hint to him of demons.
Did she? Damn, I have to re-read Slow Regard...
When the rings were brought up in book one I thought omg he’s so smart by wearing rings made of different materials he always has passable sympathy links at hand… book 2 shed some new light on this haha
theres just not enough of you guys doing king killer topics seriously untouched market and when the third book hits or when a shows/movies hit then channels like this will boom rapidly i've seen it happen my man keep it up
Yeah he's establishing a firm foundation for when it booms, pretty smart of him
I can't wait until the quarantine is over and Pat will still not be finished the 3rd book.
@@peterszabo-toth2063 Never thought Stephenie Meyer would beat Rothfuss to publishing...
@@peterszabo-toth2063 this whole thing left him with nothing but time, and erased many of the potential excuses. i feel like if you consider netflix having success in this time period, it gives him and lionsgate less excuse as they could have capitalized on an easy market. there being nothing of word on the release from the author, except frustration, tells me something is terribly wrong on his end. i hope he figures this all out soon, its very unfair to wait a lifetime for something you cannot even earn obtaining.
@@jhonnylacksville6765 It is. Unfair.
Perhaps Pat forgot to "Chaen vaen edan kote".
A minor side note: the Cthaeh didn't say the Maer will lead him to the Amyr, he said "Stick by the Maer and he'll lead you *to their door* "
I take this to mean the 4 plate door in the archives, it's been theorized that Master Lorren is a member of the Amyr guarding that door.
There's a line in one of Elodin's lectures on Naming where he says that the hand on which namers wear their rings also has meaning. He declines to tell them what the off hand means, stating "none of you are ready for that yet." While not all the rings mentioned have to be names he's earned, as per your theory here, I think it's also interesting to talk about which hand they appear on, and whether there's ant implication towards whatever Elodin was referring to... and whether it's tied into the Creation War.
Maybe those who knows things and those who name things
I think shapers wear rings to left hands, namers wear rings to right hands.
I've always wander if the sister of Meluan was Kvothe's mother. If I recall right, Meluan despises the Edema Ruh because her sister (Netalya) was seduced by one and she chooses to flee with them.
And If I'm not wrong there's a passage in the reading that claims that Kvothe's father courted Laurian away from her life as a noble woman. This might gave Kvothe a claim over the the Loeclos Box. I recall that Kvothe get frustrated over something like a trunk that he can open while everyone goes to sleep after the second night of telling his tale.
Regards from Costa Rica dude! Keep the amazing job.
Most fans think so because of the song that Arliden sang about Laurien.
Another great video dude. Well done. I love the theory about the ring without a name being one of copper, which symbolizes him losing his powers. You have convinced me.
Have/will you do a video on the short story about Bast called The Lightning Tree? I really enjoyed that one
Definitely, when I eventually get round to doing a Bast video :)
Looking forward to it!
I remember that!! I really enjoyed reading it!!
@@strictlyfantasy I look forward to this.. :)
Jesus your so good at this a love the way you explain the things keep going!!
Just stumbled across this channel. Not nearly enough channels on YT theorizing the Kingkiller Chronicles. Subbed!
I predict that Kvothe will send the Maer a Bloodless as a think you and that triggers something in the Lackless box.
Thanks for your Videos. Looking forward to the next one..
Intriguing.... thanks for this! 🙏
one crucial point here. rings are made to "show" mastery of a name at the "university" kvothe is neither in a position to show his hand (forgive the pun) nor is he at the university with fellow arcanists to appreciate their significance. in the real world they can only indicate how well of an enemy he is poised to be, and would therefore be impractical as well as threatening to his situation.
also he had to ask elxa dal if he knew a name, am i naming the wrong master here? when he mentioned he knew one (fire) there was mention is was bad to let others on to your position as to how many names you knew. also you only have 10 fingers
Although it could also be a warning to others, knowing he should not be one to be messed with.
Alveron’s dad was killed so he wouldn’t do more digging into the Amir.
And Master Linguist was poisoned so that he wouldn't teach Yillish knots.
You made me happy!
what if auri gave Kvothe a wooden ring because she realised that he isn't he isnt entirely humen. He might be part Fae, or something else
Great channel!
loved the music too
You forgot about one thing. When Elodin and Kvothe were discussing that Kvothe should make a ring of wind, he also said the rings worn on the left hand mean something different entirely. Shaping maybe?
Is it tradition to make a ring after you know a name? Perhaps Kvothe saw Ambrose’s real name and killed him. Out of shame or in mock of the tradition he makes himself a ring of blood?
Nice video! I wonder what you think about my idea that: Kvote/Kote is not in a random small town at all :). I believe he is purposefully waiting in a certain spot (or near a certain spot) for something very specific to happen. It is implied in many ways that he choose his: name, the Waystone inn and his role as barkeep very purposefully. Also the recurring first chapter explicitly mentions he is "a man WAITING to die". The "waiting" is very significant I believe. I think that whatever happened, the result is that Kote is stuck having to wait for a very long time in this place. That is why he took an extensive cover role and inserted himself permanently into the local culture etc as a barkeeper. It is stated over and over again that he doesn't need the money. If there was some battle for him to fight, Kvote would head straight for that battle and wouldn't linger in a small town. So the one remaining option which I haven't heard is that he is exactly where he means to be, and he is waiting on some event. Bast is fighting to keep Kvote rembering who he is. Maybe not because Kvote lost his name through some magic, but because they have been waiting in this place, playing their parts for a significant amount of time. Kvote is getting comfortable with the name Kote and the role he took, because that is the power of names in that world. Elodin says as much.
Thank you! I haven’t listened yet but I’ve really needed this in my life right now. - based on current events, I think the bandits might have been the real good guys. Isn’t it weird that Denna has a scar where the bandit got shot? 🤷🏻♀️
am i wrong in my recollection? did elodin have a limp of some sort at the end of book 2
right after the bandit thing?!? ima go look wtf
I think the dull metal ring is where he masters the metal and learns how to combine naming and sympathy or sygaldry. Master namer says sympathy and sygaldry are nothing special without knowing names. He has a different dull metal sword and his thrice locked chest has a dull metal lock where bast says kvothe made it.
Make some The Doors of Stone prediction videos!!
why should a ring of fire hint to his temper? We can be quite sure he will master the name of the wind. and we know that he is the most talented student in a long time, probably one of the most talented ever. why should he only master 1 name? we know elodin knows many names and I don't think we can make the assumption that kvothe is far less talented. So I think he mastered stone, wind, fire, and maybe "ice" (maybe he mastered water and fire and ice is the combination). I only agreed with you that ice could be dennas ring as it it the only explanation that doesn't seem as to be made just to make a fancy Theorie of something being more than it is
the man waiting to die is Kote. Only if Kote and his name die can Kvothe be reborn in a manner of speaking. This trilogy is the story of Kvothe's redemption in the sense of the "Hero's journey".
Bast is in vintas is in the books. In the books it is explained that commenrs started the ring thing. So before the nobility did it the peasants did it first
So it makes sense that bast would have rings. He would of gotten them from people in the town.
bast is fae he is not from vintas.
Interesting idea I had about something you said, namely that Kvothe knows the name of stone because the name is given not ‘stone’ while fire is portrayed by ‘fire’. Could it be that it’s the names that Chronicler knows, as he is the one writing the book?
That's clever. So the Chronicler knows the name of the wind and of stone, in addition to iron. Although it makes sense Kvothe knows these as well to communicate the pronunciation.
9:35 thats straight up dylan moran
How do you see the story ending? Kvothe regaining is power for one last confrontation with the amir and the chandrian?
Its surprise me that we are still talking about a book story that will never gonna be finished.
:(
Fair enough. Though I definitely believe that Rothfuss will finish the Kingkiller Chronicles, while I would bet money that GRRM will never finish ASOIAF. What these two guys have taught me is to NEVER purchase book series until they are finished. The one exception being Joe Abercrombie. I’ll buy the first book of an Abercrombie series when it drops, knowing I won’t be left hanging for years. Side note: when Doors of Stone drops, I’ll buy it the first day it’s available, whereas I could not care less about Ice and Fire anymore.
@@marktroup2978 dude im already waiting outside the book store wtf
@@jhonnylacksville6765 I started reading ASOIAF almost 25 years ago. I finished the last book seven years ago, I think. There are supposedly two more books to finish the series. Don’t hold your breath.
@@marktroup2978 good story, from what i understand, im just kinda emotionally involved with kkc, so it hurts a little extra. when i was told about the wait for wise mans fear i was terrified, but the wait for doors is a little more than expected. i wont touch that stuff, im trying to keep kkc fresh in my mind
I just hope book three comes out on august and it ain't just a filler date
I had the same hopes for August 2018, then was suspicious when August 2019 was thrown around. Don't get your hopes up, if there was a planned release date Patrick would have it tattooed on his forehead, yet he's said nothing of it.
@@pairot01 yeah.. the suspense is driving me insane. Everything points to him joining the chandrian and its driving me insane that I cant confirm or deny this. The name Kote means 7, the silence that surrounds him, his meetings with the fae and his travels with Bast before the inn. Im going insane lmao
@@senpaisanchoyt5225 "Chaen vaen edan kote" or "Expect disaster every seven years". Chaen is 7 and kote means disaster, which makes sense since Chaen and Chandrian clearly share the same root and Kvothe's life is indeed a disaster. He even tells us he caused all these world problems like the war and the fae creatures loose on the human world, making him the personification of Disaster.
I personally don't subscribe to the Kote = Chandrian theory, there's too much against it and the only thing in its favour is a scary story Kvothe himself implies is false:
"Some are even saying that there is a new Chandrian. A fresh terror in the night. His hair as red as the blood he spills."
"Those who matter know the difference"
Kote might still be cursed in some way though, maybe killing Cinder upset some mystical balance, maybe Haliax did it after the fact, maybe Selitos (or whoever the god he speaks to is) did it, maybe it's him locking away his power, maybe it was the price to pay for the power to kill Cinder. I shy away from the first reason because the Chandrian are not a force of nature they were created, and he told Shehyn he plans on killing one of them and she sees it as a noble quest they'll no doubt write in his sword's history, there's a particular mention of how one of the weilders managed to defeat 2 thingies at the Blac of Drossen Tor. Shehys knows too much about how the world works to let him kill a demon only for him to become one as a result.
@@pairot01 ah fuck is that what it was? I haven't read the name of the wind in months so excuse me.
I have come to believe there is no book 3, well , my new theory is that book 3 is hidden in the first 2
What if he's not without power and the ring with no name /copper ring is used to mask his power
love it!
Im have half convinced myself that the important woman in the story is Arie, and not Dena. She has been so much better to Kvothe.
Arie is one of my favorite characters so I hope that you're right.
You are right, Auri gives an insulting ring to Kvothe, and Elodin gives an insulting fruit to Auri… I wonder why all the insults around her.
Big mistake Fae realm is in Eld Woods which 300 miles north from Vintas boarder.
Although the maer's taxpayers still travel through there.
Dylan Moran at 9:32 ...
9:42 off topic but that's the spitting image of Dylan Moran haha, only with green hair
I really need to read these books again lol
I definitely think the ring rhyme was made up by him to seem like a powerful man not to be trifled with.
Elodin stated the importance of naming rings going in one hand or another, so that'd mean only the unseen rings are his naming rings: blood, ice, fire, air and (presumably) copper. Air is a given. Fire could be true, he's been involved in SO MANY fires it would be cool to finally see him understand fire and gain control over it, but as you mentioned there's a theory that points to fire not being one of the names he learns. Ice is unlikely to be within his power, I don't think there's a single mention of ice in the chrinicle, some snow when he's beaten up by a Tarbean guard but that's about it I think. If copper really has no name then I'd say this is Kvothe saying "don't mess with me, I have powers no other man ever had", a lie to intimidate. Then there's the blood ring, it could go either way tbh, Kvothe has used his own blood as an energy source A LOT and Elxa Dal makes it sound like it should be your very last resource, something you hope you never have to use in your life.
As for the other rings, he's already got wood and bone. Amber feels like it's part of the mythology of the Four Corners, I don't think it stems from Willem's passing comment but more like he and the bar guy both connected amber with controlling demons because it's in their folklore, Felurian mentions amber a gift she'd give another. Iron is like kiptonite to the fae, maybe he added it to the rhyme to intimidate them, Chronicler did trigger Bast's fight or flight reflex by invoking it. The ring of stone has to be Fela's, from a storytelling point of view you wouldn't give her that particular ring if you have already set up this foreshadowing, plus it's in the wrong hand. It makes me fear for Fela's safety, I can only think of one reason why her ring is not on her finger.
There is a good chance that he learns the name of fire despite the scene where he hears only "fire". In that scene there is a dialogue specific to kvothe hearing "fire," so if he did know the name he wouldn't be able to substitute it in, as it would confuse the dialogue.
I'm surprised you've not touched upon the "ring that's not for wearing", like the constant ringing bell imagery around demons and certain characters, or the wheel (aka nested iron rings) used to burn encanis.
There's a lot of symbolism to rings and a bad pun at the center of it all, i suspect understanding the joke will unlock a lot of the story's hidden meaning...
Whats the pun?
@@GOREFEAST A bell. A bell has a ring you can't wear.
@@liamomalley5779 ooooohhh.....
6:16 that guy looks like Peanut Butter Gamer... is that supposed to be Elodin? It will be hard to picture anyone else now, the dude is quirky just like the character in the book lol
Ring without name i think is the key to accessing the fae realm. Opening doors that don't open, which i think are the standing stones.
might be his true name, perhaps waiting to be reclaimed
Do you really think Elodin looks like Dylan Moran? They are like opposite people.

Yeah But when will Rothfuss Get off his ##### and publish the Third Book..By his own admission it is already written and edited
worthless since Rothfuss will never stop playing games and just finish the story. fans put more energy and time into it than he does. nice video but seriously, save yourself any more trouble with this "author." I use quotes because authors actually write.

Last stream he said he got a lot done for the night. And he gives off a vibe that the book is coming together. Unfortunately, he doesnt give more than that
Your smart man. Your insight into the series parallels mine greatly. Your voice is smooth but your inflection and accent are an abomination only equaled by Shep. You literally broke the auto generated subtitles. It had no clue what you were saying. I kept up but most would not fair so well.
The subtitles worked for me. Damn dude this was the most rude and arrogant comment I've read in a long time. "Hes from a different country so his accent is wrong." Pompous twat. Just cause people talk differently than you doesnt mean their accent is bad. I like his accent.
English isn't my first language and I had no problem understanding his speech. You're a dick and you should get your ears checked.
