I wish remakes and remasters were made like this, with more options instead of just hd assets, I would totally buy this port if they were selling it, I hope this incentivates companies to try this approach
Yeah completely agree, it is so great seeing this amount of choice given to the player to create the experience they want. I would say if it was a brand new game, its arguably too much choice when you're experiencing something for the first time, but like you said for remakes and remasters its perfect. Especially with single player games, someone else making it super easy or super hard for themselves does not impact how much fun I have with my game in the slightest!
@@HowGoodGames I'm all about having options for players to customize their experiences as well, but I do have a genuine question: How much is too much? Like, say we did get yet another new version of FF1, that's based off the really pretty PSP version. How many options and toggles would we expect out of that? I usually only hope for simple toggles. For instance, with FF4 on PSP, you can use the new OST or the original SNES OST. You can make it so that you always dash, versus having to hold the button down. But what more do we need on top of things like that? And if it's aiming to be the definitive version, does it really need to worry about having toggles for things like enabling what used to be a broken mechanic? Like how FF1 NES is very well documented as a broken game: half the spells don't work, calculations are messed up, special items don't work, etc.
@@tamerkoh i think what we always need is toggles to make the game as similar to the original as we want, and then many options that bring the game to more of a standard of todays gaming world (some example for SoH would be higher fps, dual analog stick) stuff like that. i would say that should be the bare minimum. a little bit more than the minimum would have stuff like fixing issues that everybody basically knows, like not having enough space for the iron boots all the time, which made the water temple be so dumb.
@@jeffboy4231 Thing is though, while I'm all for toggles, there's also such a thing as too many options. Show the average person a menu with a hundred toggles and they'll be overwhelmed and ignore it. Certain things you should know and understand the vast majority of your audience won't complain about upgrading, and wouldn't need to be a toggle. For example, only purists out there are gonna complain about a game getting more FoV from having the res upgraded from 4:3 to 16:9, or that the game is more responsive and runs smoother at 60 FPS. But they're gonna complain no matter what you do or don't do, because it's not the exact same as the original, down to all the same glitches. Such staunch purists are a major minority of your target audience with a remake/remaster though, so you can safely accept the backlash from them and still get overwhelmingly positive reception. I say the features that should be toggles are the ones that would have a more questionable impact on the game flow or game design, such as remakes of old RPGs having toggles to disable random encounters or increase/decrease EXP/Gold gain.
I hope that one day, someone out there will combine OoT with MM having a path in the Lost Woods linking the two. AND the ability to walk back and forth between the two freely with the items they have.
@@butterccm Yeah I know how big the idea is... But none of us thought we'd have what we have now, right? MM ran on an upgraded OoT Engine, so if MM is recompiled for PC then ideally you could just add OoT and all of it's assets to MM and put a door in MM as a load zone and have Link walk out of his treehouse in the Kokiri Forest in OoT or something like that... And yes bug fixes because of this and all that goes with it all takes time and effort... From a narrative standing, the Kokiri Forest is the only forest in Hyrule in OoT. Link chases Skull kid through a forest in MM opening scenes and Skull kid lives in Lost Woods which is directly next door to the only forest in OoT... This happens within weeks of OoT's ending. As for bringing items back? It doesn't matter, the timeline was complete when Link defeated Ganon. Anything that happens as a result of Link going to Termina and coming back to mess about would result in a Fan Fic off shoot universe. And as it's would be an unofficial mod and not endorsed by Nintendo... Ultimately, who cares? It's probably never going to happen. But I'd like it to all the same.
@@matthew8153 - You know his death, Skull kid killing him, is what leads to Link having the his first mask right? In the same way Mikau's death leads to the Zora mask and Darmani leads to the Goron mask... Their spirits are eternally trapped.
Great vid so far, but I propose the following correction: SoH is not "software designed to read code from a separate rom file". If it was, it would just be an emulator, and it wouldn't need the decompilation in order to exist. It extracts assets, not code, from the rom (assets being graphics, sounds and possibly other data like maps and such). Combine these assets with the fan-decompiled OoT code, and you get a fully working game.
Yeah great correction, I don’t know if I’ll be able to make the change without reuploading, but will definitely correct it if I do any more coverage of this game down the track!
A big thing that will stop this from copy-write takedowns is that you need to separately get the ROM for the game assets. All they are really releasing is their original enhancements.
dude ur consistency n quality.... keep em coming, love all the info on great pc ports as i never know where to research for them, this is such an awesome resource for me and im sure many ppl just like me
Hey thank you for saying mate! I’m planning on doing a series covering these sorts of ports and fan made projects too so as soon as I learn cool things I’ll be sure to share them with y’all on the channel!
completed this exact port just the other day, i absolutely loved it. funny as hell when you turn on the bunny hood cheat, constantly wearing it through the whole game. going through the fire temple setting the gorons free, the entire usual dialogue is skipped. they instead just say " Erm... I don't know what to say" and then wander off 🤣
Not even having to go back though is the best part, just having a version that was made in the year of our lord 2022 with all the creature comforts you've come to expect from that is amazing
This is actually the one time the thumbnail for these comparisson vids is actually accurate. When i play n64, especially for the zelda games, without my upscaler on its just pixels. Even with it on its pixels until i activate my mclassic to smooth it out.
Reverse engineering and distribution of software achieved through reverse engineering are not the same thing. The reverse engineering laws you're referring to specifically protect the act of reverse engineering itself. It doesn't mean any project involving reverse engineering gets blanket immunity from copyright infringements.
That actually means so much mate, these sorts of comments definitely help keep me going when it starts to take its toll. Glad you’re enjoying it, really appreciate you saying so!!
Good job on this video. I'm going to try it now, but I'll be aiming to for a nostalgia+ experience, on a 4:3 crt monitor with an N64 controller. I just want those frames! 🤣 Cheers
if I'm correct, I think there is a team giving it the same treatment as sm64's render96, it will be called render98 (no shit) and will resemble the original artwork/artstyle (even more than the 3ds ports it seems)
Gamecube does run at 480p, but its a sliding scale for resolution. When you go from 240 to 480 you are getting 4x the resolution bump because you don't just double the vertical axis, but you also double the horizontal axis.
Oh boy, I didn't want to go here but if we're going here... 320x240 = 76,800 640x480 = 307,200 Which funnily enough means 76,800 x 4 = 307,200 When you take the actual total resolution that the formats are referring too, 480p gives you 4 times as much actual resolution as 240. Doubling it would be 360p. But you’re right, it is simple math
Think of how 4k is four times 1080p. 4k is also called 2160p. “But 2160 is only two times 1080!” you might say. It’s because you’re doubling two axis, not just the one.
just curious, I haven't played the "original" on og 64 or through emulation, should I play it through those methods for my first playthrough or is this a fine way to play first time
This was my first real time playing it (outside of a brief dabble on 3ds) and I would say this way. There are little QoL improvements that will probably go a huge way if you aren’t used to the original, like the free camera, just from my own personal experience
Nice vid! The built-in randomizer is constantly getting updates and you can easily download and play the upcoming developer versions and try them out like me!
The compression (or intentional blurring) of the 'before' video makes it look quite a bit worse than it does normally, running on an n64 and old television.
I just took the footage and captured at 240p to try mirror it to the same resolution as it would have been on the n64 since I don’t have one myself. Didn’t intentionally try and compress it
Is there a Remove Black Bars option and remove item icons completely? There are cheat codes for this in emulation, a totally clean cinematic experience.
Not sure off the top of my head, I know the one they recommend in the readme is the debug version, but also they are working to make all versions compatible in the future. Check out the readme in the download though for more info
The thing that's really missing for me with SoH is a change to the controls. You can map any of the inputs to any button on a keyboard or controller. But I imagine most people will be using an Xbox controller or something similar and the current controller configuration options only allow you to map each input to one button. So whilst its intuitive to map the c buttons to X and Y for items, its really unintuitive when you need to play the ocarina.
If I remember correctly, I ended up mapping mine to the dpad and it worked pretty well. By default though I think they are mapped to the right analogue stick which feels pretty mental
@@HowGoodGames I found a bit of a workaround where I enabled D-pad for items but then remapped the D-pad to X,Y, R and the thumbstick click. I then mapped the game's C buttons to the D pad on my controller and then removed the C buttons from the HUD... that meant the R-stick could be used for the camera. It works OK as an approximation of the 3DS controls... but the HUD still displays items as being on the D-pad which of course the game thinks they are.
Awesome to see you covering this! Like with Jak, Zelda's one of my favourite series of all time, and I've been absolutely loving all this incredible stuff lately. I really dig how you're covering so much of my favourite stuff. All you need to do is cover Metal Gear and the Persona games and I'll have a hard time not believing you made this channel specifically with me in mind 😂 As always, looking forward to what's next! Edit: Holy shit, your Jak PC port vid blew up! Congrats!!
Did.... did....... DID YOU JUST SAY PERSONA? I SWEAR I ONLY NEEDED ONE GODDAMN PERSON TO SAY THAT WANTED PERSONA CONTENT FOR THE FLOODGATES TO OPEN! and of course its you lol, always looking out! Yeah, I can't believe how big it got, my most successful video of all time in less than 7 days compared to the last 7 months of posting. It's awesome but also preparing myself to get back into the grind and not get to caught up in it. Done that before and it makes it very tough on the old mindset haha
@@LeifUnni2 would definitely need to get creative if I do it, I don't know if the Persona audience and Jak and Daxter audience exactly overlap so big investment for a 500 hour game lol. But you bet ill be looking for an angle to tackle it from as I keep making videos
@@HowGoodGames Oh, if you're covering the Persona series, you've got enough potential content for multiple videos. There's a community mod-pack for both Persona 3 and 4 that are packed full of QoL features, UI adjustments, bug-fixes, and graphical tweaks. Persona 3 FES has a fan-made cheat you can use to get total party control just like the PSP version of the game. The launcher for both of these games has a relatively recent feature to where it can load cheats like that in the same way as normal mods, and you can stack it with the mod-pack for P3 FES itself. There's an in-progress HD overhaul for P3 FES and Portable. Persona 5 has a pretty huge number of mods and overhauls itself, almost like modders were determined to make up for P5R being a separate release and not DLC. There's a number of compendium expansions that are so large that even after adding in everything from all the existing 3D SMT and Persona games, the modder had space to fill with cameo appearances from other series like Seven Deadly Sins. There are backported features and playable characters from Royal, as well as custom boss battles and AI overhauls. A couple of bigger mods are on hiatus as far as future releases are concerned, because since P5R had a PC port announced, they're wanting to wait until they can port their mods to it. If you want to expand a bit beyond Persona and into SMT in general, there was a recent fan-translation released for the PS1 version of the original Shin Megami Tensei. I've been playing it now, and it's really good. SMT and Persona would each benefit from a video on how to best play each game, as it can be a bit confusing between SMT 1 and 2, as well as between Persona 1 and the various parts of Persona 2, Persona 3 having three separate versions (standalone, FES, and Portable), and P4 and P5 having a standalone and expanded version with P4G and P5R.
@@kurtisharen Is this the best comment I've ever got on this channel? I think it might be the best comment I've ever gotten on the channel. Thanks for all the info mate, I had no idea about all the fan made mods, Ill definitely have to check it out at some point. Sounds like you should be making the video on them all though! lol. Ive never actually played any of the SMT games, only the persona ones with P3P, P3 FES, P4G, P5 and P5R so still have a lot more to experience which is really exciting!
I literally have a tab with it open at the moment, looking at cover plenty more of these over the next little while (just working on a video for the Mario 64 port) so hopefully its not to far away! Definitely stick around if you are keen to see it covered!
Nope, this is it's own thing, the mulitplayer mod is through emulation which is different from Ship of Harkinian as it's a native PC port compiled with C code to be run on your computer naturally rather than going through an emulator program so it is incompatible with anything under the pretense that it's an emulation however, they've gotten a lot of cheats, fixes, and enhancements that were available in emulators before but also stuff that wasn't possible, now that the game is running natively they have more control to make a better online mod than what you've seen before, they've shown a couple teasers in their discord a while ago but they switched focus to other things first for now, Online multiplayer is coming eventually though, and it's gonna have way more potential than the modloader 64 mod
You would assume correctly. On the first part at least, I haven't started research on it yet so have no idea about source graphics or audio restoration, but ill be on the look out for both of those things now! Good looking out
@@HowGoodGames To elaborate a little and help you researching: Render96 is a project meant to create a version of SM64 featuring manually recreated character and object models looking like their rendered counterparts on the official commercial artworks and cover arts. Additionally it also includes finding all textures and audio files of SM64 in their highest available quality. A big amount of textures come from reallife photographs that when replaced with their low resolution counterparts look like they were made for a game in today's age while at the same time never deviate from what the game actually looks like (look up "texture archeology" on YT for more info on that, it's a stupidly huge topic). Same goes for the sfx, instrument samples (look up "SM64 Remastered OST" from Church Of Kondo, the topic is also stupidly huge to cover) and even voice lines. There are higher quality sources to these as well that are publicly available. Good luck researching!
@@HowGoodGames I'm glad to help. My personal opinion here: Render96 has become the definitive way to play this game. It's got a lot of the enhancements that these PC ports tend to have (including full actual Raytracing support!) and second and most important thing: This is what the devs were working with originally. It's not far fetched to assume Render96 is _exactly_ what the game would have looked like had the same exact team released this on more powerful hardware at that time.
Unsure off the top of my head sorry. There is a discord for this though, as well as having all the download links, you can probably get an answer to the question there too!
So I'd like to add one small thing on the legal side of things (Not a lawyer fyi). Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Nintendo for all their gung ho-ness about emulators being illegal, doesn't go after them for a very good reason. Before about 1999, emulators were a grey area, but then Sony made the mistake of trying to sue Bleem! for copyright infringment. They lost, and in losing, the idea behind an emulator became effectively legal by precedent. If Nintendo went after a fan project like this and lost, they'd cripple themselves and every other company to go after future fan projects like this. Which is why for as much as they hate it, they won't waste the resources beyond an initial investigation. That theoretical "grey area" is quite legally valuable, and they'd likely lose a lot of C&D power if what they tried to shut was already proven against them in court.
It’s funny you mention that, I’m putting together a video on the SM64 Pc port that Nintendo did try to go after and while it didn’t go to court, they effectively quietly dropped the issue. While they haven’t really commented on why they dropped it, you would imagine it was because they too realised they didn’t have a case and pursuing it could do more damage then good when it came to making it definitively a legal act in the eyes of many
I think the future is full of possibilities. This port has already had 2 major updates that has brought in massive changes so it doesn’t seem like it’s slowing anytime soon.
I had the same issue! I found taking it out of full screen made it visible after a restart. If I made it full screen though and then tried to move the cursor to fiddle with the settings it was invisible until the options were highlighted. So yeah, restart the game in windowed mode and try do the settings in advance, or just don’t use full screen mode if you want to change it on the reg. Might be a better way but that’s what I did 😊
i still play it in the TRUE best way to play zelda babyy. on an n64 connected to a 36 inch crt that weighs so much trying to move it throws your back out
There is a decompiled PC port like this one that from what I can tell is doing fine and hasn't been DMCA'd. I think what you're thinking of is another PC port/remake that did use the original game's code and assets, which unfortunately did get DMCA'd.
I'd wish someone took a step on making this Game accessible via mods, I just remembered the blind guy who ended this game completely with sound. It would be great if mods are made to make the text have sound. Or to add more options to identify or describe the contents of a room, like what modern technology does for blind people in real life. Just imagine these people being capable of playing this game without that much help, if any, that would be great. Hopefully someone starts adding some of these mods in the future 🙏
I can’t speak for mods, but it’s great to see games releasing now being more and more accessible, particularly the work Sony is doing. The last of us part 1 is coming and the whole game has audio descriptions which is very cool
Damn, my sister really wants to play the older Zelda games because she really liked BotW, Links Awakening and the NDS games, so I looked around which version would be the best to get her up and running without her having to constantly tweak a janky emulator :D I'm gonna try if this runs well enough on her laptop and hope she enjoys the game^^ Update: Works like a charm even on a 200€ Laptop from 2 years ago. Somewhat to be expected, but you never know how much overhead such a port (or an emulator) actually needs, even if the original game so so old :)
Link to their discord is in the description. Steam Deck hasn't come out in Australia yet, but Im pretty sure it will work seeing as it is just a handheld PC and it can also be used for emulation. As long as you have the right copy of the game and the download from the discord you should be good!
Nope, SoH doesn't provide any asset from the game. This is why you have to have your own copy of the rom, and use it once to extract the models, textures, sounds etc.. No rom, no possibility to play the game, unless someone sends you the version with the extracted assets
Alt and enter is the keyboard should cut, if you’re using a controller just make sure to actually click on the game window first or it won’t do anything
Harbour Masters have already expressed their interest in doing this for MM once the decompilation is complete (and it’s pretty close to finished from memory!)
@@HowGoodGames yeah that’s sorta impossible to find. Either allow any rom version or include the rom in my opinion. I’m going to play the game on Switch Online instead of messing around with this piece of junk.
While you are correct that transformative works are protected under fair use, I do not think that legal argument could be made here as it does serve as a substitute for the original first and foremost. But the reason it is legal is due to how copyright protects the game (at least in the USA and some other western countries). What is protected by copyright in video games typically are the script, music, art (including models, animations, textures, pixel art), source code, and published code. By reverse engineering the source code from the published code (decompiling it), and by writing the new code themselves (ie not copy/paste exact source), and then all they do is redistribute this new code, then it's legal. And that's what this is, everything that has copyright you have to acquire elsewhere, which the only legal way is owning a copy of the disk and copying it to your personal computer. If you download the game in order to setup this port, that is for all intents and purposes illegal, albeit arguably not unethical as there is no other way for most people to experience this game with these improvements
I can 300% confirm to you, it's not going to happen, if someone want to port it over as a mod, sure, but from the developers ofr SOH and including it as a main thing, nope
Not sure sorry, but they do have a discord, I would definitely recommend jumping on there and asking, someone would be able to answer in no time im sure!
Id missed a lot of the 3D zelda games until BOTW, and still struggle to get into Ocarina of Time honestly. I think definitely check it out and see how you find it, would be keen to hear your thoughts!
10:06 That's absolutely not how intellectual property rights work in the US/EU. Read the fair use definition again. "Do not substitute for the original use of the work". This is a textbook case of substituting for the original use of the work i.e. playing Ocarina of Time. It doesn't matter if the code is re-written. If you memorized a book and re-wrote it from memory, the original copyright applies. If you perform a cover of a song even without including a single second of the original recording, the original copyright still applies. If you stitch by your very own hands a Mario doll from yarn, the original copyright applies if it is recognizable as the trademarked character. These projects will of course claim they are legal, but if it ever went to court there is zero chance Nintendo would not win. I pirate just as much as the next guy, so I have no moral issue with it. I'm just letting you know what is and isn't true.
The reason it doesn’t substitute for the original is because it needs the original game to run, without it, the entire package is useless. On top of that, the reason that it is useless is because unlike what you’ve said, the code isn’t rewritten and they haven’t just performed a cover of the song. What Ship of Harkinian does is reads and uses all the assets from the original game provided by the end user (that they should be legally acquiring but that is the responsibility of the user) and doesn’t recreate any of them themselves. Since it doesn’t substitute for the original use of work though, and actually dictates that if people want to play this, they need to buy or own a copy of the game from Nintendo it means it doesn’t fall into that category. But I’m not a lawyer so fuck me I guess, that’s just based off all the other research I did into this I’ve had others confirm too
@@HowGoodGames What's clear is that this case does not fall under fair use. If it is just a novel program that uses assets provided by the user, it might be legal in the same way an emulator is legal, but that is not because of fair use. A case of fair use admits to using parts of the original work, but modifying the end result to a point where it does not substitute for original. This game substitutes for original. It may do so in a way that does not involve any of the copyrighted content, which would likely be legal, but it would not be due to fair use, as in that case the argument is that it does not use any of Nintendo's code or assets. You have to use something copyrighted first in order for it to fall under fair use. "Fair use" is not just a synonym for "legal". It's a very specific instance of copyright law. Another iffy thing is them distributing this while using the title of the original game. There are copyrights and then there are trademarks. A trademark is one of those things where the actual execution (i.e code or assets) does not matter at all, but rather is all about the branding. Using the title of a trademarked product in reference to their own software can become a problem, although the laws tend to be more lax as long as it is non-commercial.
Right I see what you’re saying, that makes sense. I feel like if it went to court though I would be very surprised if fair use is brought up and discusses at some point though, but I see what you’re saying that while legal it doesn’t necessarily fall under fair use, which is one of the things Nintendo in particular uses as the grounds for most of the DMCAs they issue. As far as the name goes, this also doesn’t use the name Ocarina of Time, despite that being what it is called in my video and saying on the title screen. This is entirely referred to as Ship of Hakinian as I mention in the video, so would that help it sidestep that issue completely?
Your exemple by memorizing a book and re-writing it is completely bogus in that case because... the code is 100% different than the original one and we're ont just speaking about variables or function names, the entire structure is differrent
No, seperate teams actually. This team go by Harbour Masters, but they are two seperate communities. I think it’s actually really cool, means we have different people picking up and porting different games rather than one team burning out trying to port everything from that era lol
Not at all, if by the similarities you mean the IMGUI menu (the top bar) it's because it's a very cool and easy to use GUI library that is used in thousands and thousands and thousands of software and even game dev :)
Legal Eagle talked a bit about transformative content. From what I understood, the content has to be transformed enough for it to apply. An example he mentionned was that you cannot show a whole movie, say if you liked it at the end, call it a review and be protected by the transformative content law. Is this port Orarina of Time? Even though there are some changes to it, it is still very much Ocarina of Time in my opinion.
This is the video I'm referring to: ruclips.net/video/5A_i-sB9H0Q/видео.html&ab_channel=LegalEagle He starts speaking specifically about copyright law at 5m40. He speaks more specifically about transformative content at 8m27.
Thanks for the link and the info, I’m definitely not a lawyer myself and maybe I miscategorised it as transformative. Even though it is still ocarina of time, what it does is make changes to the game the user owns, rather than recreating and distributing ocarina with changes. I would attribute it to something like ai upscaling or even emulating where they both need the original game to run, but it’s the upscaling or emulator that is what they’ve made that’s responsible for making it better
The assets are copyrighted, and thus are not distributed. Reverse engineering, which is what they did for the game code itself, is entirely legal. As long as they don't distribute any code or assets belonging to Nintendo then it's protected. This is why the only info they give you is the readme which tells you to rip your own copy.
This is pretty good, but definitely requires a lot more finagling beyond the setup shown in this video. For me it was set at 20fps by default and looked jittery and awful. So I messed around with trying to get it to run at 120 by matching it to the refresh rate of my monitor, but it has MASSIVE frame drops when you do this. Like very jarring, headache-inducing drops of 120 to 90 or below when walking around the Kokiri village whether I set it to match the monitor or set it to 120fps manually. Eventually I had to settle for capping the fps at 60, which is fine, but kind of a bummer. Also, the menu is just kind of... bad? It's just a very clunky UI that distributes the various options in weird places or has no explanation for what they actually do. The program also doesn't seem to recognize that when you're using a high-resolution monitor that it needs to size the UI up to be readable, so I found myself squinting at the tiny tabs along the top to be able to read what I was clicking on. Like I looked pretty thoroughly but I'm not sure there's an option to set a desired resolution at all (someone please correct me if you can). There are some really cool options though, like being able to change the load distance to infinite (off) and the texture resolution of objects when viewed at a distance, that make this a pretty great way to play OoT. Is it enough for me to use it over P64 or Dolphin (which already had their own solutions for bringing up the resolution and framerate)? Eh. At the very least the enhancements make this worth setting up to see if you like it, but I'd like to see more user-friendly changes in future iterations.
oh man that sucks it wasn't really a smooth process for you. When im recording footage, I set a max of 60fps otherwise the recording starts to freak out on me and everything slows down, same with my monitor so ill set that as well on my monitor. Maybe it was because of aiming for 120, but I fortunately didn't have any issues with my setup, I just set the values and everything worked well. Thanks for sharing though, im sure it will be pretty helpful to other people having the issues!
@@HowGoodGames It really wasn't that bad, but I'm pretty good with this kind of thing. But yeah hopefully it helps others get it running on their system because it is a really cool program. Like I said in the original post though I hope make it a little easier for people who aren't so versed in using emulators. Thankfully the hard part of getting it working is done so I only see it getting better with updates!
Heck yeah this is awesome. One of my favorite games of all time. Thanks HGG for letting me know. I like the pc port of old games, can't wait for more recoded ported classics. Edit: have you played Infamous, I don't think I've ever seen you talking about any of them, but the first two are great and might make for good content on your channel, especially if you haven't played them before.
Awesome to hear, thanks again mate and glad I could let you know! I have definitely thought about checking out infamous, I played the first one years and years ago I don't have super clear memories of it and I don't think I ever played two. I agree though, with the good/evil mechanic I think it could make for really fun content! Will definitely shortlist that one when I start finishing up Ratchet and Sly
Cool thanks, I loved the first 2 and festival of blood was pretty cool too even though it was short and involved a lot of boring cleanup, the story was great, and in that one you could legitimately fly. I agree I loved the morality and the extra bits of story it added, it always made going back fun. Second son is alright for the first playthrough but unlike the others I don't really enjoy Goin back through it because it feels like a lot of cleanup, there are like 5 side missions that you play over and over and over just in different locations. I did like spray painting and billboards though, and the story is actually pretty good. All in all I think it's good they were just victims to time, like a lot of great series. (Take as much time as you need ragnorok I know your coming, lol that sounded wrong) Haven't played first light yet. Sorry if I spoiled anything for you lol.
I mean, OOT 3D does exist but otherwise I definitely do agree with your point lol
That's some real pokemon silver/gold shit right there, now you're speaking my language
That would be a wildly massive project and it wouldn’t totally make narrative sense but would be super cool to see
@@butterccm Yeah I know how big the idea is...
If you’re going that far, add the ability to save the Deku Butler’s son.
@@matthew8153 - You know his death, Skull kid killing him, is what leads to Link having the his first mask right? In the same way Mikau's death leads to the Zora mask and Darmani leads to the Goron mask... Their spirits are eternally trapped.
I just finished this game on my pc. Time to start over!
No time like the present!
Great vid so far, but I propose the following correction:
SoH is not "software designed to read code from a separate rom file".
All they are really releasing is their original enhancements.

completed this exact port just the other day, i absolutely loved it. funny as hell when you turn on the bunny hood cheat, constantly wearing it through the whole game. going through the fire temple setting the gorons free, the entire usual dialogue is skipped. they instead just say " Erm... Reverse engineering and distribution of software achieved through reverse engineering are not the same thing. Like what you see on citra with upscaled resolution and hd texture packs?
Agreed. I play the 3ds MOD version with upscaled textures.
if I'm correct, I think there is a team giving it the same treatment as sm64's render96, it will be called render98 (no shit) and will resemble the original artwork/artstyle (even more than the 3ds ports it seems)
Maybe they could enhance the models to look as good they could get on n64 . Like conkers bad fur day level of character model detail

Quadruple 240p is 960p, Gamecube ran games at 480p which is only double the resolution
Gamecube does run at 480p, but its a sliding scale for resolution. When you go from 240 to 480 you are getting 4x the resolution bump because you don't just double the vertical axis, but you also double the horizontal axis.
@@HowGoodGames
320x240 x 2 = 640x480
320x240 x 4 = 1280x960
Its simple math
Oh boy, I didn't want to go here but if we're going here...
320x240 = 76,800
640x480 = 307,200
Which funnily enough means 76,800 x 4 = 307,200
When you take the actual total resolution that the formats are referring too, 480p gives you 4 times as much actual resolution as 240. Doubling it would be 360p. But you’re right, it is simple math
Think of how 4k is four times 1080p. 4k is also called 2160p. “But 2160 is only two times 1080!” you might say. It’s because you’re doubling two axis, not just the one.

Can we change enemy speed? Iron knuckles need to be buffed in speed to make it more difficult
just curious, I haven't played the "original" on og 64 or through emulation, should I play it through those methods for my first playthrough or is this a fine way to play first time
This was my first real time playing it (outside of a brief dabble on 3ds) and I would say this way. There are little QoL improvements that will probably go a huge way if you aren’t used to the original, like the free camera, just from my own personal experience

The amount of options you have to fiddle with in this game is just 🤯
The compression (or intentional blurring) of the 'before' video makes it look quite a bit worse than it does normally, running on an n64 and old television.
I just took the footage and captured at 240p to try mirror it to the same resolution as it would have been on the n64 since I don’t have one myself. Didn’t intentionally try and compress it
what in the fuck was the music at the start of this video
Is there a Remove Black Bars option and remove item icons completely? There are cheat codes for this in emulation, a totally clean cinematic experience.
Will Legend of Zelda The - Ocarina of Time & Master Quest (USA) version Gamecube ISO be compatible?

It works OK as an approximation of the 3DS controls... but the HUD still displays items as being on the D-pad which of course the game thinks they are.
how do you connect an external control for example for map keyboard controls to it
Why in the world do Brits and Aussies have issues saying Ocarina of Time. Instead it sounds like "Ocariner" of Time??

It's awesome but also preparing myself to get back into the grind and not get to caught up in it. Done that before and it makes it very tough on the old mindset haha
@@HowGoodGames Bring it! Maybe you could cover the newly released English translation patch for Eternal Sin on PSP?

Is it possible to download texture mods?
Can you also use the multlayer mod to pair with this?
This is one Zelda game I would love a remake of or re-relase on the Switch.
I'd assume now you will cover the PC Port of Super Mario 64 including its Render96 source graphics and audio restoration?
Yoo thank you so much dude, that is all actually super helpful! Yeah I’m really keen to find out more about it and give it a spin
@@HowGoodGames I'm glad to help. My personal opinion here: Render96 has become the definitive way to play this game. It's got a lot of the enhancements that these PC ports tend to have (including full actual Raytracing support!) and second and most important thing: This is what the devs were working with originally. It's not far fetched to assume Render96 is _exactly_ what the game would have looked like had the same exact team released this on more powerful hardware at that time.
cool stuff! while ill probably be playing the 3DS version still, this is a really good options for people who dont mind the more N64 like graphics

Link to their discord is in the description. Steam Deck hasn't come out in Australia yet, but Im pretty sure it will work seeing as it is just a handheld PC and it can also be used for emulation. As long as you have the right copy of the game and the download from the discord you should be good!

@@ClaireAzi It literally took me less than 5 minutes to download, setup and run. Learn to Google properly.
@@ClaireAzi It's illegal to include the rom. You are meant to rip the disc files yourself.
I hope they inclde Triforce% work and have that hidden quest and have the madalions do things.

RIP, hopefully someone picks it up, sorry I can’t help but at least won’t leave you on seen
@@HowGoodGames appreciate that 😂 I'll try to ask again in a bit tho.
I've never played a Zelda game before. Now might be the time!
Are the people behind this the same from OpenGOAL Jak? I can see some similarities.
No, seperate teams actually. This team go by Harbour Masters, but they are two seperate communities. I think it’s actually really cool, means we have different people picking up and porting different games rather than one team burning out trying to port everything from that era lol
Not at all, if by the similarities you mean the IMGUI menu (the top bar) it's because it's a very cool and easy to use GUI library that is used in thousands and thousands and thousands of software and even game dev :)
im very used to the 20 fps. that 60 is unnatural but im sure after a while it be normal
This is the video I'm referring to:
ruclips.net/video/5A_i-sB9H0Q/видео.html&ab_channel=LegalEagle
He starts speaking specifically about copyright law at 5m40.
Remember when Game guides were a thing just because you got stuck in some levels, no smartphones exist, and keep quarters and phone numbers on hand.
Duuuuude, I still love game guides. Will still often buy them when I see them pop up in stores for games I love
I still can't figure out what an ocareener is.
I’ve been looking into this for a while now, best as I can make out its some time of Latin dance
I keep telling myself I should get that soon 😅
Haha no mate, nothing spoiled, excited to give them a go!
how do i save?
get error code every time with pal and usa versions
