In other news, Andy Haines still has the team taking called 3rd strikes over and over again, swing the dang bat already!
So let me get this straight. Our hitting philosophy is to wear out the opposing starter and get to their bullpen sooner. Our pitching philosophy is to pull our starter after 5 innings and rely on our bullpen. This is bipolar!
Or the pitching philosophy is to set a pitch or innings limit that your organization believes will protect the arm of a young budding star. That maybe you need to treat him a little differently than you would an established veteran because the kid only pitched 120 innings last year. They’ve done a pretty good job of developing him, as you can plainly see from the results. Maybe they know what they are doing.
@enjoyer6201 Unfortunately, they are developing him for the Yankees or some other team....while our team suffers losing season after losing season.....wash, rinse, repeat! AND no....they don't know they are doing......
The pirates will never be a winning ball club again with a philosophy like this
Philosophy, incompentant & cheap coaching staff, incompetent GM, etc. etc.
I remember when they said they were taking him out after the 5th I said to myself, “well, I’m sure the Mets are aren’t gonna complain” 😂
Even the Mets manager didn't understand it. Said "that's a special arm" when interviewed.
DK, my question is-- Is winning less important than analytics?
To them, yes, 100% yes.. every season is a punt until the roster choose otherwise in spite of management
And if he blows out his arm after only throwing 120 innings last year, you would complain about that too.
@enjoyer6201 A well conditioned. Pitcher/ athlete. Should be. Able to pitch 200 plus innings a year.
Oh wait that is the threshold now. Totally ridiculous.
120 innings years ago was a long reliever/ starter.
Give me a break if can't go close to 200 innings a year. 5 innings a game that is pathetic. That is not on the pitcher. Bet he could go more. Why does not someone ask if he could. Hmm wonder what would they say. 😊
When there is no urgency to win, let’s save him for the playoffs, in 2027. What a joke organization. I feel bad for players. Everyone else has got to go.
This is a fireable offense
Shelton is a stooge though. Do you think a really strong manager wouldn’t push back on this bs.
What's that even mean?
Stooge definition: one who plays a subservient or compliant role to a principal. Shelton: let’s the gm and analytics guys make in game decisions - stooge.
I agree DK. I remember a time when the pitcher had a say if his arm was sore or not. He should have played a couple more innings. Great show DK
DK, I couldn’t believe my eyes. 59 pitches, 50 strikes in a 1-0 game and we pull our pitcher. What happened to them trying to win the games that are in front of them? This is the kind of decision that makes me feel stupid for being as excited as I’ve been about this team. This is all pointless
When Skenes eventually gets called up, they'll do the same with him, smh.
Limiting the pitch count and the innings of two bright young stars to protect their arms is now controversial. So what if they broke that innings or pitch limit and one of these guys blows out their arm? I bet you would probably whine about that, too.
@@enjoyer6201 an arm can be blown anytime, he went 80 something pitches in prior starts. He was built up prior to earn making the team. Now all of the sudden we need to protect his arm? Look at Strasberg, things happen when they happen. It is part of the game, nobody can predict it. There is risk when they step on the field. Look at Cruz last year, one play out for the season. Moreta just this year for the Bucs, nothing odd, just got injured when he did. It is baseball.
@@enjoyer6201You have to sit back and wonder what is wrong with the game nowadays, that wasn't for the first 70/80 years previous. Every one is a damn china doll now. Pitchers routinely threw complete games, nearly every start. Back in the day, you didn't have guys bulking up in the weight room. Putting on muscle is good, but when it makes your ligaments and tendons sooo tight, they have no flexability, this, I believe is why pitchers are blowing their arms out. Perfect example, is Giancarlo Stanton. That guy is sooo tight, it's no wonder he keeps popping Quads, etc. The human body needs room to stretch. Anything that is too tight, will snap!
Once again, April and May don't matter to this management team.
Da'wreck Shelton proved himself bad at chess( old rules, no DH).....now he's proving himself bad at checkers( new rules, DH)......and then there's Andy Paines🙄
Don't forget Oscar Moron
Sounds like Shelton needs to man up
It isn't going to happen. He's also very uncomfortable around any leader type personalities. Been watching this for years with him. I thought it was going to change though last night was another proof it is the same ol same ol.
Shelton's a total puss . It was bad enough when Hurdle would use his " players need a blow" ( day off) schtick routinely and now this. There aren't enough Mike Maddux's ( Rangers pitching coach) that have smarts, anymore. Instead we are stuck with the 3 stooges..Cherington, Marin and Shelton. And, don't get me started on Mr. called 3rd strike Haines. Man the hell up. This is the big leagues. Go big or go home. Go home, which is exactly where Suwinski should be. Pink slip him!
Idk maybe management just wants to pretend they’re real baseball GMs and not frauds so they do something just to do something, “uhh look we’re watching pitch counts, that’s a thing, right guys?” .. it kinda reminds me of Keller’s first year when he was still developing, he had a game were he was throwing a no hitter through 7 and they pulled him anyway and went on to lose the game. Kellers next performances were the epitome of deflated.
Outstanding last line.
All of the people criticizing this move better not have been the people complaining about “over using” Oviedo which they said led to his injury. Oh - wait - they are the same people.
Watched MLB New York Mets broadcasters ,could not say enough great things about Jones. They were happy to get the Pirates out if town early.Implied some virus was going around Pirates since Philly chill.hang in there, they need home crowd backing now.
This franchise is run by a bunch of bafoons, they are completely clueless, I can't anymore
Charles Barrett once pitched a complete game with only 58 pitches. I'm sure Jones will never have the opportunity if it ever pops up for him to do the same because they'll yank him after a whopping 35 pitches if it takes 5 innings.
Cant imagine Danny Murtaugh doin this bullshot
Per some conversations I ve heard.. Falter pitch Tuesday, Jones Wednesday …
Only had 59 pitches… That silly stupid predetermined garbage … Gonna finish 1,2 or 3 games out of playoff.. This is why…
It'll be interesting to see the fans reaction if this team falls below 500. I see the same pattern developing as last year, poor pitching changes and too many strikeouts.
Agreed we are getting hammered out there…10+ Ks in our past 5 straight. Yet it’s still “see more pitches…see more pitches!” just shitty philosophy that ends in brutal defeat down the stretch. Only difference is it’s happening far sooner this year. Andy Haines or not this shit needs to change. We can’t score 1 run and expect to win ball games.
One thing is for sure, the Mets were very happy when Jones was taken out of the game! 😂 the pirates were winning 1-0 and Jones is pitching a one hit shutout...so, take him out in the 5th inning? Yeah, the buccos are back! 😂
Same as last year, great start but headed for .500 or a little worse.
Never betting on the pirates again...I had good money riding on that game and couldn't believe jjones came out so effing early
Sucks for you bro. The pleasure is to play. Win some lose some it’s all the same to me ♠️
Start the season 5 and 0. Since then what is the record? This team has talent. A few missing pieces. Horribly mismanaged.
I told you guys from day 1..dont get excited...
I could be wrong here, but anecdotally I don’t think jones ran a single 2-ball count yesterday. Among the other once-in-a-century accolades he picked up last night, this would have to be another one.
I’d also add that the only hit allowed was a ball that Reynolds would probably tell you he catches about 75% of the time. Would have been interesting to see what they did with a perfect game in tact through 5 inn and 59 pitches).
Baseball is clearly broken when analytics and the fear of potential pitcher injury supersedes wins. It started when the Nationals yanked Strasburg early in the playoffs in 2012 due to a preset inning count they weren't going to back down from, and now every young pitcher of any great value who hasn't yet proved they are a workhorse will get pulled after a set pitch or inning count no matter where the game is at that point, let alone the season. And everyone is ok with this. No point in bringing up Skenes this season - who accidentally admitted this spring he was on a 150-160 inning count this season - until he's proven he can pitch at least 200 innings and a complete season without helicopter mom level monitoring from the GM. What's the point? Especially if they are chasing a pennant and it's all for not because the pitcher is more important than the game or the results? And especially when the team is the woebegone Pirates who might only ever have one shot every 30 years (being generous here) to ever reach a World Series.
Hey DK. Does this team have a legit chance to compete with this current coaching staff? .
No
I can live with the pitching count for him, as odd as it seems. What not fine with is the lack of hitting. That’s the reason they lost.
100% agree. You're never gonna win that game with 1 run.
What about the Jack problem
Same old Bucs😂😂😂
Scoring just one run doesn't cut it, DK, no matter how you slice it.
Play to win the game? Not for the Pirates. Pull a guy with a 1 hitter for Ortiz for 2 innings? terrible move. Leyland would have told them to pound sand and were winning this game. TERRIBLE.
Again, don’t know why we are getting hyped they will just blow it
Yea, yea, yea Jones should have been allowed to pitch the 6th. However, the bullpen still screwed the pooch.
If we want a team on a severely limited budget to compete even from just time to time, we HAVE to do most non-player salary related things VERY well. Rather sounds like this isn't the case now with the Pirates.
You said it on one of your last shots from spring training. Just do everything you can to win, now. Take at least 2 from Florida, then Washington, then Baltimore. They got away from it last night. Dumb
Seems they didn't learn their lesson from yesterday. Falter was on a pitch count today. Take him out after five innings and 73 pitches having given up four hits. Bring the bullpen in losing 2-1 and now it's 9-1.! The bullpen is going to be burnt out by July by these clowns!
This organization doesn’t know how to run outside of “rebuilding” mode
It's just just discouraging to watch.
A innings count??? What is the walk to the mound too much???
Here come the people sweeping it up for this continuously incompetent organization kneecapping itself once again. There’s yet to be a demonstrable correlation between pitch/inning limits and an overall decreased risk of injury. Pitchers have never been more tightly regulated and they’re getting injured exponentially more. Better pray his body can adjust to throwing 100 pitches consistently mid-late summer. Not saying he should be out there throwing 120 pitches, but this was absolutely asinine. The offense is somehow even more infuriating though
They are playing 500 ball since the 4 and 0 start....same old same old pirates...
The FO CONSTANTLY talks about building pitchers up, innings wise, then they get Jones, who is a stud, and they do this garbage. Whether it's Cherington, Marin, WHOEVER, they need to be firrrred! So sick of this intentional sabotaging of the team. Jones low pitch count should have got him thrpugh the sixth, and at least start the 7th. I'm about done, with this team, even after 50 + years as fan. It is a complete and utter joke.
What good is it if he pitches really well and they lose because they won't let him pitch? This is like the Perez fiasco. No complete games allowed. Another loss. The inevitable slide has begun. Baseball is NOT baseball anymore.
Look this is stupid. 50/59 strikes
But the bums you put in blow the game. Cmon !!!!!!
Ryder was 3 up 3 down.
Beginning of the year they had a plan for starters to go 5-6 and rely on their great bullpen. We’ll, the bullpen is not that good so plan needs to deviate, but they can’t do it
MONITOR THE # OF PITCHES NOT THE INNINGS FFS
This is a fireable offense
