  • Welcome back to the 18th Century Tinkerbell Project!
I generally find the construction of 18th Century petticoats to be pretty easy. They become complicated once ruffles, flounces, and other embellishments start being added, and even then, the difficulty is figuring out the layout and placement of the embellishments.
So, I got cocky and just went straight into making this petticoat without thinking about the different skirt supports that I would be wearing under it instead of pocket hoops.
I hope you enjoy watching this comedy of errors! The petticoat turned out in the end, and I got a lot of giggles out of it.
    Thank you for watching!

Thank you! I think it's important to share mistakes because if I can learn from them, they might help others, as well.

We ALL have those days when our brain cells just don’t fire in sequence. I enjoyed watching your calm approach to each setback. Me? F bombs would of been flying and turning the air blue!

Oh, trust me, the F-Bombs were frequent visitors during this project. LOL Thank you for watching!

Love this! Beautiful work. What do you do with the petticoats?

This particular petticoat is to be worn with my 18th Century Tinkerbell Costume as the undermost visible layer. All the petticoats I make are costume pieces.

I really admire your patience in redoing the mistakes! It would have taken a couple of days for me to calm down and redo them! I am wondering how you determined how much fabric you would need to make the petticoat with all of the pleats? Is there a specific equation you use to determine that? I rely on the pattern to tell me how much fabric to buy, but it seems you did this on your own. I would like to be able to do that too. Thanks!

I started making 18th Century petticoats following tutorials in the American Duchess Guide to 18th Century Dressmaking, and for the most part, two pieces cut width of fabric (55" and above) and the appropriate length - for me anywhere from 42-48" long - is perfect. I pleat down the width of fabric to half my waist measurement and trim the top to get the correct length.
