  • It's time to fly! Actually, Tinkerbell's wings weren't a complete success, so we can probably just taxi the runway instead of actually flying.
Welcome back to the 18th Century Tinkerbell Project! Today, we are making the wings. While the idea and construction was sound, the physics was lacking. The wings do need a bit of re-work and repair, but they functioned perfectly for the photoshoot.
I hope you enjoy this video, thank you for watching!

Oh man, wings are a huge pain, but these turned out gorgeous for all their difficulties! Please keep us posted on how you solve the flopping issue!

    Hello, Everything looks amazing,
In fixing the wings.... When I made my Kids wings, I used cellophane to cover the wings... the cellophane when heated up bonds together, and when too much heat is applied it puts a natural hole in the wing that sometimes looks good... I found cellophane that looks just like your fabric at Michael's . I use a heat gun or hair drier to fuse the two pieces together.... You can also use large glitter between the layers to add more sparkle.... My Daughter loved doing this...
When making the back attachment work better, if you use a stronger wire long enough to go from the top inside of each wing to the middle where your back would meet the wing, and then use another from the bottom inside of each wing up to match the middle , then twist both of those wires together (with that twist you would make the corset "W" or "M" mounting like you already have made) This makes the back brace stronger and it won't wobble back and forth. Also you would not need a string tied from each side to keep them together...
LOL..I made them for my kids for them to be Fairies at the NY Ren Faire, and when we got back to the car I just put them in the trash at the Faire...They were to big to deal with on the way home, esp. because I knew my Daughter would not use them again...LOL Oh Well the things we do for kids...
Good Luck, your TinkerBell looks amazing....

Lovely iridescent wings. My thoughts...may or may not be helpful : )....what If you just add florists tape at the bottom of the wing wires??? Build it up a little where they would not slip off.?
As to the wings standing out more...what if you just built up a ridge...to tuck under them...on the outside....rolled fabric or something that would just push them more to the center? Hard to describe : )

Thank you for the suggestions. At this point, I'm willing to try just about anything. 😁

Great wings. I had a thought. What if you added a small L-bracket or a hinge that only opens so far to the frame where the two pieces of the wings meet. Of course that means you'd have to figure out how to attach them to the frame or the wings. Ugh! I know what I'm trying to say but can't figure out how to explain it so you'd understand.

omg! these wings make me so glittery happy!!!!...k im going to add my 2 cents lol...plumbing dept is awesome...im not sure what they are called but its like a metal zip tie but u fasten with a little screw. also there are caps that look like old school hair rollers that ive seen used to cover connections for disposal. if they fit your frame they just pop on. if u rework frame you can get little rods that fit into each other, similar to adjustable ikea table legs or like the little push button on umbrella handle... any of these will allow to remove wings when you need...ill see if i can send pic to your IG, im sure my desc is totally vague lol..love the costume, you did such a great job!!! tfs:)

That’s incredibly creative. Can you solder the wing frames to the holder in the correct position and then cover them? Have you considered using spray on “head liner” glue ( an automotive product) to attach the fabric? I don’t know how well it would work with such light weight fabric but I think it may work.

I had a thought about preventing the wings from slipping off of the frame. Could you bend the bottom of the frame below the wings up (in a U shape) that way the wings would be supported by the bottom of the frame and not slip off.

They look lovely! This is helpful for a very similar project I'm planning! I was thinking to make them shoulder mounted, but I haven't played around with it yet. I bet the zigzag stitching holds better than just seaming over the wire like I was planning. Hot knife is my current plan, but are your edges super scratchy? My current experiments with hot knife cutting have ended up fairly uneven and ragged edge, but I also didn't have a temperature controlled knife, so I'm hoping that helps. Or I might just wind up cutting them and then sealing them over a flame.

My edges aren't scratchy, but they are a little uneven and ragged. I don't mind that because they feel more organic.
