  • Here’s a quick video on how to enable the high idle feature on the Duramax diesel HD trucks from GM. This is for a GMC Sierra 2500 or 3500 and the Chevy Silverado 2500 or 3500. It was 90 degrees out so I couldn’t activate the feature in the video, but the steps are all there. If anyone sees anything different in theirs, comment below!

Can you use the High Idle switch to keep the engine at a higher RPM (e.g. 1,000 to 1,200) after it has warmed up if you want that higher idle when using the 120 v accessory plug? In other words, can you use it to keep the RPMs up so the alternator(s) are running faster even after the engine has warmed up?

From what I’ve read it’s just used for heating the engine quicker in cold weather.

You would need to order the high idle switch to do so if you want to use high idle outside of warming the engine up.

Doesn't seem like it did anything when you hit the cruise control. Did it even increase the idle.?

It did not since it was 90 degrees out. These instructions are straight from the owners manual on how to do it.

Hey brother you are wrong, what you are turning on is elevated high which warms up the engine to better heat the cabin when it’s cold. “high idle” is something different no matter how cold or hot it is outside you it will manually turn on by putting truck in, turning on park brake, turning on ur cruise control button and toggling the roller on the left side of ur steering wheel. It has two speeds, one just below 1,000rpm and another above ! So change the title of your video to how to enable “elevated idle” because you are confusing people like myself who need the high idle function! Thank you for the video anyways.

@Jacei9 Did you ever figure this out? on my 2021 GMC, I could engage high idle by doing exactly what you said. On my 2024 GMC it doesnt work and the dealer just tells me to do whats shown in this video. Im sure there is a kit or software to enable the high idle...

Do you need to have the high idle switch option for this to work or does the truck come with the ability to automatically do high idle on it's own? For example, my 2012 Ram Cummins had the switch, but would also do it on it's own if the weather was cold enough. I'm confused as to whether the Sierra will only high idle if you have the high idle switch option

    • @diverjp771

It’s an option. It’s just a reprogram on the computer the dealer can do. Can’t tell ya how much, but I know anytime they reprogram your computer it’s $400 or more.

The high idle option comes on by default for the GM trucks when absolutely necessary , but you can also make it run this way. Nothing aftermarket needed.

@JoeCarExpert you need to read page 9 of the diesel supplement manual for the 2024 hd, before making a video on this.

@@JoeCarExpert you are confused with "Elevated idle " and the "high idle switch" available on the hd's. 1/2tons cannot be equipped with the high idle switch.
