I’ve been fascinated by the traditional Japanese arts for a while now. I’ve been reading a couple books, but this helped clarify some things. My intention is to eventually combine my interests in ikebana and watercolor and create watercolor paintings influenced by Chinese brush painting and sumie of my arrangements.
Thank you so much. My intention for coming here is to learn the basic placement techniques which you’ve taught so beautifully. My plan is to paint a watercolor Ikebana arrangement using a Kintsugi pot. Blessings to you!
I'm very new to floral design, and have fallen in love with Ikebana style of arrangement. Would really appreciate learning more about creating in this beautiful style.
How fun! I just found your page! My aunt Sumiko Yamashita Lahey was one of the first teachers of Ikebana Sogetsu in America, arriving in San Diego in 1960. I don't know if "master" is the right term, but she was celebrated for her teachings. She passed about 6 years ago. Her work was BEAUTIFUL.
What a wonderful story of your aunt! Thank you very much for sharing it with me. And I'm thankful to your aunt and many of the former teachers for spreading the joy of learning ikebana in the US and in the World!
What a wonderful introduction to this beautiful art - just ordered a kenzan and bowl and am excited to practice my first arrangement. Thank you - will be checking out your website soon!
Thank you for such a clear video and explanation. I would like to ask you a few questions. 1- Is it possible to cover the kenzan with pebbles or other materials? 2-Is it possible to colour the flowers with spray paint in order to create new colours. 3- The suiban is always rounded or can it be in other shapes too? Thank you so much for your time.
I would presume that with fake flowers, you'd obviously forego the water but you could do the same technique with kenzan; however, use something to thicken the base like tied to a wad of cotton and flower wires or something so it could stand. Have you any luck in trying it?

I use mostly fresh flowers for Ikebana, though.
I would presume that with fake flowers, you'd obviously forego the water but you could do the same technique with kenzan; however, use something to thicken the base like tied to a wad of cotton and flower wires or something so it could stand. Have you any luck in trying it?

I have recently found out about ikebana and am very interested in turning it in a hobby, so I was lead to this video after some time of research. I do have one question out of curiosity: why must the flower stems be cut in water? Thank you for your time and lovely tutorial!
If you cut stems underwater, air doesn't come in the vascular system. By keeping air out of the vascular system, you can keep the flower last longer.
Thank you. I'd like to learn more advanced IS...
Amei a explicação!❤❤❤BRASIL

Magnificent, is there a particular arrangement style that works well as a table centerpiece?
For a table centerpiece, there two points you might want to consider:
- The arrangement shouldn't be too tall. The hight is short enough so that people across the table can enjoy conversation without being disturbed by the arrangement.
- The arrangement should be enjoyed from 360 degrees, not only from a certain direction.
