I have just started studying Obara-style ikebana, and I am currently learning Taterukatachi. This is definitely the clearest tutorial I have ever seen for Taterukatachi. I really benefitted from your explanation of the motivation behind your every single decision. Thank you!
I am so glad this was helpful for you. I believe it is important to explain the "why" of the arrangement. It makes it easier to understand and easier for you to make a beautiful arrangement! Good luck on your ikebana journey!
THIS is the Ikebana that awes me. Thank you for sharing some of the techniques and principles. I love the harmonious juxtaposition of textures and the elegance of colors and shape with only two materials. I could meditate staring at it for hours.
Thank your for the nice comment. I'm glad that you liked the video and the arrangement. Using just a few stems but creating a dynamic and interesting arrangement is one of the reasons that I like ikebana, too.
just stumbled on you what a wonderful way to fill the mind and environment. Especially at this unfortunate time. Just a magnificent art form!! Thank You for enabling me to be there!!

Thank you for sharing this video. Very informative and good advice but I would like to know the terminology you used in this video, such as 'sushi, sushi filler etc. Thank you so much.
Thank you. I'm glad you found it informative. The Shushi is the main branch and the Kyakushi is the focal point from which all the other materials rise. All the other stems used in the arrangement are Filler stems.
Wonderful explanations thank you. It's interesting that to my eye, the downward curve of the third willow at 19:42 was perfection. I think because it creates a burst effect. Cultural differences I suppose.
J.A. Peleski thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed it. It’s interesting how different people see the different lines and the energy they create. I think it also has to do with the way the school views the materials.
@@iwatejapang I think the Japanese even today have a thing about cut flowers and the association with death, so it's understandable that some would want to mask it
Stephen, this was a well thought out plan and your teaching method was excellent! I am excited to try an Ikebana arrangement in one of my own pottery designs. Thank you!
Y aquí estoy, fundamentando mi clase de haikú y buscando elementos minimalistas para comprender y así ser capaz de transmitir, a mis estudiantes latinos de 14 años, la belleza de lo breve y de lo asimétrico. Saludos, me ayudó mucho.

Hello! I just started properly learning ikebana. Before I would just put flowers in vases and feel like a pro lol. Do you have a book in English for Ikebana I can find in Tokyo?

mary carlino for a Moribana arrangement, you need a container with a large, flat bottom. With the container you made, it is not good for a Moribana arrangement. But you could do an arrangement like I did in the video.
I thought that the water level was really important to ikebana design? I see the flowers are fully open and in their mature state, representing summer, so wouldn’t that mean that the water level should be slightly less than what’s in the container? I’m in Floral design school and currently learning about ikebana so just seeking some guidance and clarification:) thanks
Morlla234 thank you for your comment. There are over 2000 different schools of ikebana, so there are many ideas/ways to do and interpret what ikebana is. In my school, we always put as much water in the container as possible. That helps to keep the flowers hydrated and makes the arrangement last longer. However, if I were doing a landscape arrangement, I would try to show the seasons by showing more or less of the surface of the water-in winter, showing less of the waters surface, and in summer, showing more. But, other schools might have different thoughts on this. I hope this answered your question. Have a great day!
Hi stephen. I have this small question, when we insert the stem into the kenzan, doesn't the end point of the stem becomes weak and provide not enough mechanical support?
Hello. It is actually a very strong support. But if you reinsert many times, it doesn't weaken the stem and you will have to recut it. Some stems like snapdragon are weak, so you add a support to the part that will be inserted into the stem.
@@iwatejapang Thanks for your reply Stephen. I understand that stems are quite strong enough to pivot the Kenzan. But what happens when I bend it to some angle. Besides why do I have to insert the stem and then bend it at some angle instead of inserting it so that it makes an angle by default? In addition, in my first comment I was so excited that I asked the question immediately which made me forget to appreciate your content. I am really grateful to you for making this clear video on Ikebana and also for replying to my query.
