- Any wood, highly degraded, and pre-punk works great for a hand drill fire board. We've all heard that Trumpet Vine, Willow, Cedar, Mulberry, Cottonwood, Basswood, etc make great fire boards, but even they will work better if slightly degraded.
I wanted to show you what I look for when searching the woods for an ideal fire board... Let me show you this great Tulip Poplar specimen that I found just the other day. Please SUBSCRIBE at the end of the video. Thanks!

Thanks for the awesome vid. David. I was going to ask about wood choice but I noticed you have another video about that too. 🙂
That's a pretty good board holder with the knife.
Did my first hand drill ember today!!!
Congratulations. I still remember mine, late at night and in the kitchen of all places.
Pre-punk? Isn’t that rock and roll?
Definitely comforting knowing how to do something like this. Probably not a bad Idea to get a wild edible plant book as well if you aren’t able to hunt. Learning how to trap is definitely good as well.
Very nice. Greetings from Germany. Friedrich
Vielen Dank, dass Sie meinen Kanal besucht haben. Bitte kommen Sie oft zurück!
Nice trick with the knife to hold the board. You never fail to teach me a little more every time..:)
Thank you for sharing the knowledge with us. TimCan recommended your videos. Cheers.
Thanks Agnos!
Thanks David, I enjoy your videos!
Good video David
Very good teaching. Even using the knife as a mini vise was key.
Cottonwood board and a cottonwood spindle work very nicely. If you can get a yucca stalk for a drill that's the best. Bird's nest of dry grass works very well. Inner bark from a cottonwood is mosst excellent!
What knife is that you're using?
Japanese pull saw
Hi Friend, do you have Whatsapp to change experience? Thanks to teach this technical.
As always so cool . But I swear , evry time I watch a new video , you got a different color Mora . Makes my Bushcraft OCD kick in and wanna buy me some different colors .
Thank you so much .
Mora's are great little workers.
In my part of the country we have mostly Yellow pine , Water oak and Some Cedar .
Are these woods ok for fire boards?
Yes, when degraded enough to receive a thumbnail print.
What did you do to fluff up the pine needles like that? Did you rub them in your hands? They seemed to catch well.
Yes. I have 100s of videos showing it.
Thanks for this and all your videos
When I want to make a spindle what are the features I need to look for in the would, what trees give us these features
And is there a relation between the wood’s type used in the spindle and these used as a board?
See the hand drill playlist.
cool lesson.
Softwood or hardwood?
Love your channe. You're like a fire guru
Yes. Either, when the wood has degraded to the right density. See my hand drill playlist.
Thank you for takin the time to share your hobby with us. Got my first two embers today with now drill, n made one the other day with pump drill. I'm addicted lol. Your input helped immensely, thnx again
I remember my first bow drill ember, absolute joy after 1 month of trying.
Another great demonstration of your knowledge and skills! 👍
David - I like this stuff too. If you keep it up, you may become the world authority on this topic. You really make hand drill look easy. One vote for small spindles. I appreciate your expertise.
Thanks friend!
I noticed you drill slowly at first, then speed up. How come?
Warming the set brfore I go for the ember. Check out my Hand drill playlist.
Excellent job!
Awesome David! Thanks for sharing your skillset and knowledge!
Another good one brother. Well done. 👍
This is hands-down the best video on hand-drills. Has less to do with the wood type and more to do with its natural degradation....
Have you ever used red cedar as a fire board?
Works pretty good.
Does cedar make a good fire board... I keep cedar shims I’m my car for good dry kindling
They should work.
In alaska we got lots of poplar Aspen alder willow spruce and birch. This is a good thing to know. In case I lose my lighter
Nice job
Great camera work showing the notch as the friction dust builds up to ignition and a nice view of the Mora technique for holding the fire board in place. Thanks Dave!
Thanks David good knowledge
Awesome David! Thanks for putting this on youtube. I can't wait to give it a try next time I go camping.
Good news I learned to identify my tulip poplars in West Central Georgia here , on my acreage , those branches are up high.
Usually the tallest trees in a forest.
very good LIKE!!!
Good job great info. Thanks friend
Another great video, Dave. Refreshing to see someone so dedicated to quality.
You make it look very easy?
Nice
Simply beautiful!!!! Great work brother
Thanks Joe!
Would this also be the case for a bow drill fireboard?
Yes.
Wow, you made that look easy.
i still failing, never get the wood smoking
