I've just rejoined local golf club at age 57 - last time I was a teenager. I'm total crap scoring 66 and even 73 for 9 holes. Best I've hit to date is 58. I've had lessons in the past but find the info they give me is ok while I'm having the lesson but fades (unlike my shots - which slice mainly) with my ageing memory. Watching you play John on "Bad Golf" was a good exercise in intelligent course management on what looked a challenging course full of ponds etc. I'll keep my eye on your channel too from now on. Good luck mate.

Hi mate, really appreciate you coming over to my channel and giving it a look. I had a great day with John and learned loads. Even though I didn’t play anywhere near my best I feel that it definitely helped improve my game. I’m with you on the lessons. I think the comfort of having an instructor there helps to hit the ball well in lessons but then when you’re on the course on your own it’s a different story. Don’t worry about the scores at the moment. As long as you enjoy it, the more you’ll play, and the scores will fall eventually….that’s what I keep telling myself anyway 😂

That is a very nice looking swing for a 25 handicapper

Good swing mate. Be careful with all the practice at the range as the matts can be misleading and conceal your fat strikes. I find the best thing (if you can find the time) is a sneaky 6-9 holes of an evening at your local course when it’s quiet and you can practice a bit. If quiet you can play a few holes and practice golf off the turf like it’s supposed to be. Consistency in strike and short game are the key for me.

Cheers Peter, really appreciate the positivity. I have a well documented loathing of the driving range 😂 Mainly because when I’m there I can stripe balls consistently and probably look like a 16 handicapper but when I hit the course I fall apart. So I need as much course practice as possible. And now that we have long evenings, I’ve been trying to make the most of it by getting out on the course as much as possible after work. Thanks for the advice 👍🏻

Not as bad as you think .swing is pretty good just watched you hit some balls at the range most of them fly in the same direction .keep at it my friend ..

Cheers Pete, much appreciated. When I’m practicing I feel like I have decent ability but I think I lose a bit of form/focus on the course. But I’m the eternal optimist when it comes to golf so I’m convinced I’ll get there eventually. It’s the hope that kills you 😂 Thanks for watching 👍🏻

@@DiaryofaHighHandicapper when you are at the range try and play you local coarse in your head . Imagine you are aying the coarse and score your shots as you would on the coarse if you had a bad drive then its 3 from the tee .i find it helps alot when i do it .have fun mate.

Have you tried (after you warm up) playing 9 holes in your head, ie: Par 4 you would hit driver, maybe 7 iron and a wedge, or par 3, 6 iron and so on. Just an idea and something I do instead of just hitting balls from time to time. Great video Thanks for sharing.⛳

Always 😂 When I’m not playing golf, I’m thinking about playing golf. I never hit a shank in my head but unfortunately the same can’t be said for out on the course 😂 Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching 👍🏻

Your swing is better than mine when I started. I'd say it must be your short game that is letting you down. Its the quickest way to shave shots off too.

    • @DiaryofaHighHandicapper

Hi Peter, I think my biggest problem is taking my swing from the range to the course. I just tense up and don’t concentrate on completing the basic fundamentals of the swing. But I’m working on it. I actually think my short game is quite reasonable. The area where I lose most shots is just by mishitting or duffing the ball and as a result i use up strokes for zero yardage. If I eliminate this I think I can get down 👍🏻

Judging by that range session.....I don't want to jinks you but I'd say you will easily drop 5 strokes! You must have a terrible short game! 🤣🤣 really good potential!

Hey mate, judging by your comments I think you’re working your way through my videos but if you haven’t seen the course footage yet, you’ll quickly realise why my handicap is the way it is 😂 I’m quite honest about my game. I actually think I have a decent short game but I duff and shank a few balls each round which means I use up strokes for zero yardage. I’d take about 5 strokes off my game instantly if I just ensure I make decent connection with each ball 👍🏻 Thanks for watching mate.

@@DiaryofaHighHandicapper yeh I see exactly what you mean! Your range session to your on course was night and day!?? Think nerves probably affecting you quite a bit! I usually just play myself...love a summers night down the course! But if I ever go play with friends I get so nervous I end up playing so bad! Even if someone is walking there dog ill usually wait till they pass by! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Compress the ball more by focusing on hitting the ball first and trying not to hit the mats first. Great swing for 25 handicap and you'll drop your score quickly. Short game short game short game!

Hi Laurence, thanks for the feedback. I’ve made a slight grip tweak since then and I’ve found that my ball striking has improved considerably. So hopefully you’ll see that in the next few videos. And 100% agree with you on the short game. It’s probably the area of my game that’s suffering most at the moment. Thanks for taking the time to leave some great feedback 👍🏻 Jamie

In fairness that’s an impressive swing for 25 - can’t see you stay that high for long when the weather comes back. Is it just that you haven’t played enough rounds to bring it down?

    • @DiaryofaHighHandicapper
      @DiaryofaHighHandicapper  2 года назад

I wish that was the case 😂 but unfortunately no. I’ve played plenty of rounds and my handicap has bounced a round a bit. My main issue at the moment is that I either hit a lot of shots heavy or duff them completely meaning I’m using a lot of strokes for zero yardage. I tend to lose a bit of form when I step from the range to the course. All things I’m working on at the minute though. Thanks for taking the time to watch and leaving a comment 👍🏻

@@DiaryofaHighHandicapper I can relate to the losing form from the range to the course, range mats don't help because if you hit one fat it will bounce into the back of the ball and give the impression it wasn't too bad a shot but on the course it shows straight away. I worked on not swaying and getting the extension upwards by using the ground earlier in the lead leg, I think that helps with shallowing out the low point (that could be utter bullshit but it sounds right in my head😀)- I have found that the worst you can get is a "thin to win" if you slightly overdo it.
anyway good luck with the journey and like the other post said the swing isn't too bad and if you practice the right things the Hcp will soon come down👍

As a high handicapper, I’m not really in a position to dish out advice 😀 but it might be the case that your grip is a little tight. Try loosening the grip slightly and it might take some of the pressure off 👍🏻
