Love the fade.It came out perfectly. I think one of my favorite things about the diecast restoration/custom videos is that it's not competitive. it's collaborative. You propose these challenges, and then use them as ways to boost your imaginations, having a rough goal in mind. Takes you out of your comfort zones and makes you better.
Absolutely brilliant, Rob. Your skills are growing with every restoration that you're doing. That fade is really nice, pretty good for coming up with it on a moment notice. Thumbs up, all the way. Nooooice!
You got this one. Both were awesome, but close up, Danny's paint looked a little orange peely for me. But now I'm nit picking... Great work. Thanks to you and all the other "resto/custom" guys. Playing "cars" was a childhood staple. I had the racing wheel cases, 2 story matchbox garage with working lift, a gas station , hot wheel tracks that would take over my room, with loops, high bank turns, battery powered accelerator.... Wow.. Thanks for the memories. 👍
Wow, carbon fiber bonnet knocking this car out of the park!!! Those wheels compliment the yellow hued windscreen ! Two tone fade paint job is awesome! Just a fantastic job mate!😎👍🏻👍🏻
And the winner is .... Matchbox garage! Nice remodel. Paint Scheme is superb. My favorite part is always the pledge treatment to the windshield. Great job. And as always thanks for posting.
I love the color fade and the actual green metallic copper mix. Also the wheels are perfect for this car. I think I would have colored the seats in a different color ( just to break the interior a bit) and I would probably tried to find some decals for it but other than that: top notch!
Hi Rob,this one is looking smart, the wheels wanted something Japanese with them and the Mazda is right for it,the spoiler and the skirts are awesome, nice looking model 👍
I enjoy yours and Danny’s build offs and so far I have always chosen Danny’s by a short margin but today you have won by a long way! Excellent job mate! Pristine paint job
Gorgeous custom, Rob!! I agree it’s definitely your best yet. Actually, it’s one of the best I’ve seen ever done! Thank you for yet another great video!
You painted that car kind of the way my father liked to paint real cars when I was in high school. "I've got some colors and a spray gun--let's see what happens!" Sometimes that worked out, sometimes it didn't. Yours works. :) (Also, there's something fitting about a rotary-powered car that's set up to do donuts.)
10/10 on the fade job. i use rattle cans for mine andhave a team of modded racers for gaslands, all painted in colour fades. Great job on the car, love it!
Holy heebie jeebies, watch out for the wing police, they'll spoiler you! 😂 Another awesome build, Rob! I love the RX7s with a wide body kit. Nice fade paint, too!
OMG that is most insane custom you have done to date Matchbox garage on this RX-7 a really strong contender for winning drift off hands down you are the best channel here on youtube i love it.
Great job Rob, perfect choices again on this one! Gold is kind of a weird colour, most automotive gold paints are made with a blend of silver, green and red, different ratios give you different shades, probably why that mix didn't look that different under artificial light, will probably will look a lot different (greener) in sunlight though. A friend of mine used to be a car spray painter and he hated painting gold cars, you could look at the same paint job from 2 different angles and it would look red from 1 angle and green from the other lol. Looking forward to Danny's build, hasn't been posted yet as of me writing this comment.
Definitely better of the 2. Recently got one of these IMSA Mazda's but it's a trickshifter. Was nice to see the casting differences. The front end is actually hollow, found that out when I dropped out the front air scoops. Glad you're using caustic soda, just dont get it in your eye!
I bought that car about a month ago intending to do a custom as well, so really nice to see yours. I eventually decided to do a Nissan 180sx for our local club's upcoming "JDM Challenge" though.
The original casting seemed to have some off proportions, so the over-sized spoiler really works to bring it all together. Such an improvement on the original. :)
What an extraordinary build off! That turned out quite well Rob. It isn't really my cup of tea but I do think it looks the stuff. I want to add that the year stamped on the bases of diecast cars doesn't necessarily mean the year it was made but rather the year it was copyrighted/registered/patented. This car was only released with one livery, (named IMSA Mazda RX-7) but it was sold for three years; 1983,1984 and 1985, according to the Matchbox Fandom page. Yours could be from any one of those three years. This really isn't a great example because that Mazda only got one design but I hope it made some sense. You may or may not have noticed on newer Matchbox cars and even Hot wheels cars, some have two years stamped on the bottoms. First year being the patented year and the second being the retooled year. I hope this helps. (-: Cheers, Colin
Just watched out this and your other recent video doing a fade. I wonder if using Diecast resurrection's formula (dilute the paint with clear) wouldn't make the fade easier. Requires more coats for the color to come out, but making it slower/more subtle and gradual I think could be an advantage. Might allow to experiment with layers of different colors too, specially around the transition area (e.g. make the first coats of darker or lighter color tone, then the top coats of the opposite but don't go all the way, kind making a fuzzy outline if it makes sense). I am partially high, might be gibberish lol.
Really nice paint job Rob great looking drift car .... with a questionable rear spoiler 😕...... l would've cut the centre support out completely and just added the spoiler as it was. That's just my thoughts though. Great job on the carbon fibre hood front spoiler and side skirts though 👍
Best work yet Rob, loving the paint. Also I probably spend just as long filing and sanding my cars as I do with painting etc, really getting the edges smooth and tidy makes a huge difference.
Amigo, perdón ya deberías usar decals y dejar colores obscuros, no pasas de ese azul obscuro o negro. Bendiciones y un fuerte abrazo, dejen su like si te gustó mucho. GRACIAS.

Thanks for the heart, Restoration Rob. 😉

Rob you are on a new level now. The progress we get to observe each video is consistent and impressive.
David Johns
Thanks David
Awesome job mate. That carbon fiber really kicks it up a notch.
Thanks Danny, yeah I'm glad I had that carbon fibre knocking about. Easy enough to use
And the winner is .... Matchbox garage! Nice remodel. Paint Scheme is superb. My favorite part is always the pledge treatment to the windshield. Great job. And as always thanks for posting.
Absolutely awesome custom. Wheels, spoiler and carbon look super. Very nice fade paint job. Excellent attention to detail.

I know it wasn't a competition per se but yours blew Danny's out of the water. No comparison...A+, 5 stars, 10-10-10!!
Great build off. Well done. Love the new colours on this and Danny's car.
This is your best work, and you definitely won the challenge. Keep putting this level of effort into your work, and the results will pay off tenfold!
Great build, loving the fade, super casting to start off with.

Hells yes Rob, who doesn't love a fade ? Even better....a RX-7 with a fade. Very well done ! 🍻
I agree, one of your best customs yet. Great job, paint and wheels look really cool and the spoiler looks like it came with that car.
10/10 on the fade job. i use rattle cans for mine andhave a team of modded racers for gaslands, all painted in colour fades. Great job on the car, love it!

The fading between gold and black looks great and the carbon thing on the bonnet too
Wow. What a cool Drift RX-7 ✨ Kick-ass paintjob, Wheels & Wing 💯
I had this same casting and had painted the bottom half a dark maroon and the top gold. I'm really loving the wheels on that as well.

The beast. Awesome work. Im thinking about fullsize version now.
Definitely better of the 2. Recently got one of these IMSA Mazda's but it's a trickshifter. Was nice to see the casting differences.

I really think you and Danny should link your videos when you do these challenges.
We do in the description
I bought that car about a month ago intending to do a custom as well, so really nice to see yours. I eventually decided to do a Nissan 180sx for our local club's upcoming "JDM Challenge" though.
Exellent job, very nice customizing. Great colors. The massiv spoiler at the rear maybe is a bit to large.
The original casting seemed to have some off proportions, so the over-sized spoiler really works to bring it all together. Such an improvement on the original. :)
I have been watching your vids for a while and I must agree...this is the best one yet! 🔥🔥🔥
Cool car. Love the paint fade. Good wheel choice.

Boom. Whos all is in the build off?.....ah its Danny....should be good. Your detailing is what sets off your work really well.
Beautiful job Rob. Very nice fade.

Really nice paint job Rob great looking drift car .... with a questionable rear spoiler 😕...... l would've cut the centre support out completely and just added the spoiler as it was. That's just my thoughts though. Great job on the carbon fibre hood front spoiler and side skirts though 👍

the end result was very good
Best work yet Rob, loving the paint.
Also I probably spend just as long filing and sanding my cars as I do with painting etc, really getting the edges smooth and tidy makes a huge difference.

Stunning mate!
Nice work, looks great!...Bill
Nice color dude.
But, Robb! If someone were to steal the car, take it apart, and remove the paint. They'd find that the interior is pink; you didn't do enough!
Totally agree with you. Your best yet.
That is 1 sweet drift car
I recently got this casting in the blue it in good condition except 4 paint
Wicked looking car 👊🏾🖖🏾✌🏿👌🏾🇬🇧
