"Squirming under questioning about his own controversial statements by the BBC’s Andrew Neil, conservative writer Ben Shapiro got so angry that he walked out of the interview. Shapiro accused Neil - who is a conservative - of trying to make him look bad due to a liberal agenda.
“You purport to be an objective journalist, BBC purports to be an objective, down the middle network,” Shapiro said after Neil asked if the heartbeat abortion bans sweeping the nation are bringing America back to the “dark ages.” “It obviously is not, it never has been. And you as a journalist are proceeding to call one side of the political aisle ignorant, barbaric and sending us back to the dark ages - why don’t you just say you’re on the left.”
Neil runs The Spectator, which also leans to the right.
“You talk about undermining the public discourse,” Shapiro continued toward the end of the interview. “It seems to me that simply going through and finding lone things that sound bad out of context, and then hitting people with them, is a way for you to make a quick buck on BBC off the fact that I’m popular and no one has ever heard of you.”

@@bradadult2075 O'Neil is pro life - he just acknowledges that women are humans and not fetus-incubators who should be jailed for not fulfilling their bodily functions - something you'd expect to see in a medieval shit-hole country but not in an advanced democracy. Very few in Britain on either the left or right support an armed populace. We prefer a society where citizens aren't so scared of each-other that they arm themselves to the teeth and regularly massacre each other. Not that we don't have our own problems of course.

She misses the same point that shapiro missed- it isn't about the identity of the interviewer, but the questions being asked. Answer the question- whether Neil was as left as marx or as right wing as he is, it shouldn't disable your ability to answer a question about your own positions.
Again, this is what an objective journalist should be- accused of being left by the right, and right by the left, with no prior research to hand. Shame this simple concept appears to go over the heads of other so-called journalists

Before that, since we can't look that far back, there's no way we can say anything definitive. FYI for anyone outside the UK, Andrew Neil is literally chairman of The Spectator, a conservative magazine. To a Brit, the implication that he is ‘on the left’ shows a degree of ignorance almost unfathomable.
"The Left" is a scapegoat boogeyman that the Right use instead of "Corrupt, Bad Faith, Identity Politics, Collectivist, Moralist" etc. to smear actually Left positions, like universal health care, financial regulation, etc.
Ben should have just called the interviewer obstinate, stubborn, having an agenda, arguing in bad faith, etc. and he would still look like an idiot.
@Ben But wouldn't it be more of a boring interview if Andrew Neil and Ben Shapiro became an echo chamber for right wing Rhetoric. Andrew Neil is one of Rupert Murdoch's goons and a reactionary. His job, is to argue convincingly and with passion for the alternative view. I.e. Ben Shapiro is opposed to the Liberal Left philosophy and therefore Andrew will play Devils advocate. If he did so unconvincingly then it would be a boring one sided conversation that just served to prop up Ben's ideology. He should have had the strength of character to defend his position rather than accuse him of being on the left, like theres a conspiracy out to get him, get emotionally riled up, freak out then sod off.

Hi, comment from a Brit here. The mistake made by both Shapiro, and to a (far) lesser extent some of your panel, is a misunderstanding of how the BBC works. Their questioning will always be contrarian, as - whilst it of course happens - they don't have the same levels of sycophancy/hatred to politicians we like/dislike. Andrew Neil is indeed centre-right personally, but he doesn't allow that to editorialise his interviews - indeed, he is just as rough to Conservative interviewees as he is to those on the left. That's why he's regarded as one of the very best news interviewers. As such, panellist making claims about 'shrines to Thatcher' is just as misguided as those made by Shapiro.
Oh, and he is Scottish by the way!

@@saxx9088 btw the BBC is not state run. The only way it kinda is is the way it makes money, it does this rather than by using ads there is a tax for british citizens who chose to pay it. Called a tv license. This money then goes to the bbc via the government, but it still acts as an independent corporation. But that is the only connection.

Also under the BBC Royal Charter government ministers (obviously as a proxy for the prime minister) appoint the Chair and board members of the BBC, meaning the decision-makers at the BBC are chosen by the government. It's not formally 'state run', but it is certainly under heavy government influence.

I also think the fact that Shapiro has a billionare sugar daddy backing him is a thing that shouldn't be overlooked. On a collage campus with students who have no history yet and come from modest backgrounds they can easily be intimidated by a millionare superstar who could have a lot of influence on someone's career. The power of social hierarchy should never be underestimated and Shapiro often intimidates other people by his hierarchy due to his billionare backers.
The BBC though is a very large public broadcasting company and Neil has a solid career and full confidence. So he if anything considers Shapiro to be beneath him and isn't impressed by him in the slightest.
There is a culture in the US of looking down on students, especially students who question the status quo and Shapiro really is a mouthpiece for that. To humiliate and intimidate students by faux intellectualism to keep them in line.
Shapiro has built his entire career on “got you” moments against 19 year old college students who have just barely learned how to think critically.

I’m not sure if you’re an American or not but Shapiro just demonstrated why a large majority of Americans just aren’t taken seriously and while I don’t agree with a lot of the political views Andrew Neil has, I am fully able to say that he just shit all over Shapiro.

As somebody who watches Andrew Neil interview people from here in the UK, I have thoroughly enjoyed watching what happens when a kid like Shapiro meets adults. He was so out of his depth. And to accuse the BBC (of all things!) of making a buck. Pure popcorn joy for me and not the best start for the book in question.

I am not their biggest fan but 'making a buck' is irrelevant with the BBC in the UK where everyone has to pay TELEVISION LICENCE. Look up Andrew Neil's political background and things like contrarian journalism and educate yourself. They interview everyone that way no matter their political stance. Shapiro is perpetually a kid on a high school debate team. We get it, you have mastery of debate tactics, but that doesn't make you right.
I am not familiar with Shapiro's oeuvre. But, a true debate is defined by rules which ensure both speakers time to express their arguments. Shapiro doesn't so much debate as talks over opponents with petty insults and mischaracterizations. A courteous person cannot even have a conversation with a Ben Shapiro. Sooooo...I think you give him too much credit. I would say he is not a master of debate but rather a master of the straw dog.
Kinder Kuchen American style debate is about using rhetorical tricks to try and talk around your opponent, the truth becomes simply one tool in a toolbox and has no inherent value. Academics writing papers that respond to each other is a far better way to get to truth, no verbal time limit and it’s much harder to pull tricks to convince the audience while saying nothing of substance
Ben's debate tactics are simple
Talk fast and cram as many words into your argument as you can so no one can pick up everything that is said.
When that fails he'll question you using a nonsensical hypothetical scenarios that has no right answer.
