The people here in the United States of America have the right to criticize, condemn and point out the atrocities Happening around the world and that includes Israel. This depends on who raised you. If you were raised by the black revolutionaries or progressives who participated in the Civil Rights Movement, you probably feel differently since we have always been sympathetic to Palestine. Which brings me to a point few black Americans are cognizant of: most black people did not participate in the CRM often for fear of reprisals. However, most did support the movement. If you were raised by the black moderates or conservatives who participated in the CRM, you probably won't be sympathetic to Palestine. SNCC was my babysitter during the CRM. And even after SNCC had long disbanded and I became the babysitter for the children born of SNCC, we remained sympathetic to Palestine.

Tiffany, yes and, extending interviewer's logic, if the book is extreme then facts, reality in Israel is extreme. Apartheid as clear as day. And Israel's arrogance to continue its crimes with impunity.
As a journalist, how can you accuse someone of extremism and not provide any specific quotes or sections of Coates' book to validate your accusations? This is journalistic malpractice and a disgrace. Coates, as a guest on the show, deserves the opportunity to discuss the specific sections of his book the host thinks are extreme, so he can properly defend himself. This was just a total ambush, unprofessional and bad journalism.
@@mpalgy My statement stands. A real ethnostate in practice cannot be a democracy because by its definition, it will treat others considered outside of its ethnic preference differently. They won't have the same representation, the same voice, nor the ability to vote on issues concerning the direction of the state. You can't be both. It's just a logical contradiction.
All countries have a right to exist, no one is denying Israel that right, we are just saying that the other countries around Israel also have the right to exist. There is a fine line between defending your country and wanting to obliterate all people who are not of your religion, and Netanyahu has crossed that line. We had sympathy and wanted to protect all Jews persecuted by Hitler, however now Netanyahu is doing the same to others as was being done to Jews. We are no longer in an age where the only solution is to kill each others in wars that will never end, so be smart and replace Netanyahu with someone who cares for all children of the world.
There's a genocide going on at the hands of Israel and this co-host is more concerned about the oppressor. He's actually perplexed & offended by a Black person (intelligent, compassionate Coates) articulating defense of an oppressed, marginalized group. I'm glad this exchange happened so Coates could put him and others like him in his place.
@coolkillab5236 Go back to your Jewish history. It's not just about the Ethiopian Jews. Jews have always had internal struggles between their own internal factions. Jesus was raised as a Pharisee and we see how their conflict with the Saducees turned out. Imho, the 2 state solution is something Israel needs to seriously consider.
Only a black man would have been able to keep his cool in the face of that ambush of disrespect. No matter the heights a black person ascends to, this is what can happen at any time. A black man is expected to fall in line and not have his own perspective based on his own thoughts. This guy believed he had done enough to earn his right to thoughtfully question the approved position. Kudos to him to be able to keep his cool and expose the racist prig! I doubt he'll be accepting any of those invitations though.
This is a textbook example of how American mainstream media values Israel above all else, and how compromised it is when it comes to ethical and objective journalism. Which doesn't exist in the US mass media and might never have, but it's gotten gradually worse until we've now had every area in politics, mass media, popular culture (TV, movie industries) completely drenched in a value system that incorporates the approval and support of Israel into it. You can't become an American president unless you support Israel. Just look at how they compete in their sycophantic behavior towards Israel, to satisfy them and get the money they expect from such support. This is both on a national and state level. Just imagine that there are working contracts in some states which forbid you to even criticize Israel?? Makes you wonder why, and there is no sensible answer to why one nation holds another nation's every interest above its own people even. So the interviewer's questions aren't at all a surprise to be honest. American political reps lie for the sake of Israel (Blinken and the lie about Israel not witholding aid for instance) and this same policy and value system is part and parcel of American journalism and mass media. All we're seeing, is one man Ta-nehisi Coates, revealing this to the masses but really, the only ones who have to hear this are mainly the people working in mass media in the US, as well as the half of American population which doesn't care about world news or the world at large because they just want to go on with their comforts and conveniences like it's just another regular day and no children and babies are being murdered in Palestine. Everyone else already knows the truth, no matter the lies and deceit of mass media.
If you want to see how the media plays a role in this read "Israel-Palestine on Record: How the New York Times Misreports Conflict in the Middle East" Another book that highlights this phenomenon in the media is "Discourse analysis and media attitudes : the representation of Islam in the British press" by Baker, Paul. You can also read "CULTURAL DIVERSITY AND THE U.S. MEDIA" by Yahya R. Kamalipour and Theresa Carilli, Editors 2 other good books about the topic are: The General's Son: Journey of an Israeli in Palestine by Miko Peled and Holy Lands: Reviving Pluralism in the Middle East by Nicolas Pelham
PLEASE NOTE: Tony said "Does ISRAEL (the nation) have a right to exist, and if the answer is no then I guess the question becomes why do the PALESTINANS (the people, not PALESTINE the nation) have a right to exist?" He literally compares a people to a nation, and then questions why would the people have a right to exist, if this nation doesn't have a right to exist. That is casual genocide language if I've EVER seen it. If this government can't exist, then this other group of people, ethnic group, or nationality can't exist ?????? In this post trump world, everyone is saying the quiet part out loud.
5:36 The “journalist” thinks he has Coates in a gotcha moment. When Coates started calming and confidently started replying with “mmm, mmm” so attentively, you just knew a wicked verbal assault was about to be served up.
It's probably because deep down a lot of people feel guilty for how Palestinians have been treated, and the US government especially has been complicit with a LOT of war crimes and human rights abuses in the region.
I want to know what a country's right to exist or defending itself has to do with starvation and genocide of occupied people. Israel has rights, but nobody else does? Does Palestine have the right to exist? Do Palestinians have the right to defend themselves? Can they go to mosques and churches.....schools and hospitals.....get food and water? He really wanted a black person with the trials and tribulations of living in America to apologize for HIS culture going through what America never apologized for putting black people through to this day. 😂😂😂

This interview was so evil and wicked. He handled it very well.
A lot of people are putting too much focus on the reporter. He’s the mouth piece for an entire system that promotes ethnocracy and modern day Jim Crow in Israel.
Why doesn't anyone ask does Palestine have the right to exist?
Ta-Nehisi Coates was absolutely brilliant in his response to Tony who was obvious a biased, partial, racist against Palestinians. It is obvious that Ta-Nehisi Coates is intellectually brilliant and Tony is an indoctrinated poorly informed reporter. Like any country, Israel can be criticized for their actions towards a nation of people. Any head of state such as Benjamin Netanyahu who decides to commit a holocaust, a genocide, a apartheid against another nation of people is wrong. It is wrong when Germany did it, it was wrong when America did it end it is wrong that Netanyahu and Israel are now doing it towards the Palestinian people. And here’s another thing you had better understand Tony… When you start trying to take away Americans constitutionally protected rights of free speech that is the quickest way to have people turn against you. The people here in the United States of America have the right to criticize, condemn and point out the atrocities Happening around the world and that includes Israel. What makes any nation of people think that they can go on criticized while they commit inhumane acts towards a People?

I have in the last few days repeatedly viewed CBSMornings interview of Ta-Nehisi Coates. A comment here said Black Americans don’t have a dog in this fight. I believe as Americans whose country supports Israel’s actions and policies we do. My son visited Israel as an attorney studying international law shared with me what he saw and experienced. As far as how Tony interviewed Ta-Nehisi I was disgusted and angered. To which I tweeted CBS, Tony and Gayle saying that he would have been snatched off the air for his behavior. @@optimus2g that explains why he thinks Israeli Jews can continue treat Palestinians as unworthy of human rights and life as they have for decades! Got it.

I was so disgusted by this interview. I could not believe what my ears were hearing and what my eyes was seen when this journalists supposed to be journalists disrespected this man so harshly. He mainly called his book a book on terrorism towards Israel. When the entire book is not even about Israel and the book is speaking about being a journalist and basically a love letter to journalist about being journalists. And I could not believe that Gail and the other black gentleman sat there and didn't say anything. They kept their mouths shut and allowed this to constantly keep going. And then I asked myself why is this gentleman so standing behind Israel I have watched him for a while on CBS always supporting Israel. Then I realize his family lives in Israel his family has land in Israel look it up. And one other thing that disgust me was when I looked at CBS in the morning and this was right after the bombs were placed in the pagers. In this gentleman set on national television and spoke about that and he laughed and chuckled. It was a very quick chuckle but he smiled with a laugh and nothing else was said I couldn't believe my eyes.and it let me see that mainstream media even before this they don't have our best interests in mind. So I rarely even watch these morning shows or world News Tonight anymore.

Ta-Nehisi represents humanity, Tony represents evil. That's the difference
If you want to see how the media plays a role in this read "Israel-Palestine on Record: How the New York Times Misreports Conflict in the Middle East"
