Gearbox Repair - 8x8 Amphibious Vehicle Argo REBUILD Ep.3

  • Steel rims and frame get sandblasted and powder coated, the planetary differential brake steering gearbox parts get cleaned in parts washer, a couple of gears get replaced with new gears, new bearings and circlips installed. The planetary differential gets assembled and worn out reverse idler gear oilite bushing replaced with homemade brass bushing. The project came to a halt with a damaged bearing hole in the aluminum gearbox case. I have to figure out how to repair it so I can finish the gearbox assembly.

    I highly recommend aluminum brazing rods with a MAP gas torch. It should be a easy repair. Use the old bearing race and build up the surface around the race. The brazing rod will not stick to the old race. You can practice on a piece of aluminum and a old race.

    That case is a little rough, but, i'm sure you can fix it. Seen a case explode because the owner didn't believe in maintanence. Owner wasn't happy, said it was Argo's fault. We straigtened him out. Mind you, never saw a frame crack that bad. Must have been really abused by the previous owner. Paint on it looks really nice Donn. My parts supplier is beside ODG/Argo's plant and Amin offices here in Canada. Seen the Sherps getting assembled there now. Good trade, you send us Sherps, we send you Argos.....

    Hi Donn, just a suggestion; with your parts cleaner surround the bottom of the tank with 10 mm copper tubing. Drill 2 to 3 mm holes in one side of the tubing not completely through. Add a valve to adjust air through the solvent it’s not perfect but it does help with the heaver grime on the parts. I leave it bubbling all night,
    Play safe from Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada.

    Something like this with a blown engine or ruined gearbox might be a good candidate for electric conversion.

      @Crewsy Год назад +1

      Except electric would be really heavy.

    • @DEADB33F
      @DEADB33F Год назад +1

      @@CrewsyDepends what your range goals are. For 20-30 mile range and using Lithium cells I don't see weight being too much of an issue.
      I mean the thing has 8 large flotation tyres at low PSI so is always going to have reasonably low ground pressure even if loaded up with batteries.
      Realistically though you aren't going to be covering large distances in something like this as it has zero suspension and a pretty harsh ride (I've driven an Argo which is similar). It's also the batteries which are the expensive part, so keeping to a low-ish target range will keep the cost *and* the weight down.

    • @DEADB33F
      @DEADB33F Год назад

      @Charles Brainard Yes, but that's not something that would ever be within my budget personally so is of limited appeal.
      Converting a UTV or something like an Argo to be a relatively low speed, low range, low cost electric offroad farm workhorse is something I could see myself doing at some point.
      Not many examples of that sort of conversion around though.

  • @k.johnzarzeczny682
    @k.johnzarzeczny682 Год назад +5

    brass will not hold p to a bronze bearing. I have made several brass bushing, they didn't last. I know you have the gear box together, but I would get bearing bronze or get the correct bushing. If you don't replace it, keep a good eye (ear) on any noise from the gear box. I enjoy your projects. PS, I was a tool maker so I have made many bushing in my time.

    • @DonnDIY
      @DonnDIY  Год назад +1

      My bad, it might be bronze. There's no way for me to tell.

    • @johnsherborne3245
      @johnsherborne3245 Год назад

      Scratch it, bronze is usually softer, that’s why it makes such a good bearing, the soft tin rich won’t weld to the hard steel surface. If tin based bearings ever over heat the tin oxidises, tin oxide is very hard and it rips apart the surface. I had to chase a bronze bearing recently and was pleasantly surprised at the price for a sintered bronze after I had seen the price of bronze bearing stock.

      Would be VERY amazed if that worn out sintered bronze bushing in the reverse gear was a custom size. You can cut the bushings to length so just order the right OD and ID. The brass will hold just fine till then.

    • @hackish1
      @hackish1 10 месяцев назад

      Happy you brought it up as well. I was also wondering if the factory clearance for this bushing was that loose. For the cheap price, replacement sintered bushings are a lot easier to procure. I have seen machined bronze bushings made with oil channels instead of sintered material.

    Man... i do not envy the task of fixing that bearing pocket.
    That said, i've had to fix one in the past and i've had ... success with this roundabout method. I went to the next size up bearing OD. Back then i didn't have a mill, so i got help from a friend and had him cut the bearing pocket next size up. It does work, but at least in my case (literally and figuratively) the bearing pocket boss, is just big enough to work. I always feel that one day i'll find that lathe gearbox explode or something, consequently, i don't use that lathe in its lowest gears. It does work, but not well.

(Loctite 680 is a good one) They're essentially super-glue for metal and a go-to problem solver of mine. Should be able to measure the center location from the opposite case half and transfer it over.

    The use of brass as a bearing is not a good choice, it will wear out quickly. The best materials for that application would be bronze or oilite as their wear characteristics are vastly superior to brass. My working life was spent in the industrial gearbox trade for defence, aerospace, newspaper printing presses, etc. Good work on the vehicle so far.
