Genius. You just gave me the idea for building a log splitter, and other projects I have rattling around in my brain. So, thank you.

  • @billsanda9373

Nice work. I made a similar unit over 10 years ago using an ac clutch from a 1991 bronco. I made it for my 3 yard dump truck. It held strong, never slipped, and never failed. I sold that truck last year and that clutch unit was still going well. That unit you made will work great and hold up to anything you throw at it.
You are the only other person I've heard of doing this.
    Nice work!

It took me a minute to figure out what you were doing. I thought you were using the AC compressor but what you wanted was the magnetic clutch assembly and the housing was convenient since you could install a different shaft to couple to the hydrolic pump. Nifty home made hydrolic pump.

Seen this reposted on RUclips and everyone was hating on you. I say this is a well made magnificent machine. You used basically scrap out of a recycling bin ready to be crushed and made a working hydraulic pump and arm that you can find parts for at any local scrap yard or you could buy replacement parts new and readily available because it's just an automotive ac compressor and basically a riding mower engine. It's honestly genuis.

Being able to fabricate solutions is a critical skill, especially for my family living in a very rural area. There were so many "take away" lessons from your video. The fabrication of the adapter plates, using spray paint for the template is brilliant. Great job!

this is a really cool setup but can i ask why the hydraulic pump needs a clutch vs just direct drive and allowing it to run open circut? i could see the need for a clutch if this pump was on a vehicle to avoid long run times when the pump isnt needed. but why here?

Put a heavy duty microswitch to the lever by using a "B" cam, so the microswitch become depressed when you pull the lever in either direction, thus the pump only works when needed.

That’s very resourceful! I’m just trying to grasp the reason for it though. Cause a hydraulic circuit will be able to drain back to the tank when it’s not being used while the pump is still going.
The only real benefit I see of this setup would be if you were running a hydraulic motor from the pump, you’d be able to start and stop it electrically.
