I was trying to clean off 50 years of tarnish on the brass kick plates for our little store. I did exactly as you up to 220 grit sandpaper. It came clean but I couldn’t figure out why it wouldn’t shine. Now I know what else I have to do so thanks very much. I’m off to the lumber yard to buy fiber sandpaper!
Great video! My only question is if you're supposed to sand uniformly then why did you finish each Pass on the bottom right corner? I'd imagine that substantially .
Haha I was watching the video thinking the same, 6 times more sanding than most other areas, sometimes we do little motions that are counter productive, Used to manually grind air compressor plate valves using a glass plate and grinding paste, same principle, work your grades to ever finer compounds removing any marks created by the previous compound. Don't move on until the biggest imperfections are the ones you are creating. Was suggest a figure of 8 pattern of movement keeps the directional bias to a minimum.
@@SkillsandTrade ignore the negative comments! Amazing job! I cross cut with sandpaper in every direction? Good idea or??? I am hooked on polishing, blacksmithing, knife making and restoration! You got me addicted to polishing! Lol 🙂🙂🙂. It's good for anxiety. I never knew it was possible to polish this well! Cheers from Australia just subbed.nice work love it so much. And liked! 👍👍👍👍
Good job mate. If you only want to achieve a satin finish, what grade of sandpaper to recommend going to? Also, can you use an orbital sander in place of the drill?
Thanks for the great video! Could you tell me how I would go about sanding a brass sheet evenly if I only want to take it to a 2B/cold rolled type finish. I'm actually planning to paint on the brass sheet. I'd like it to be shiny but not as shiny as a mirror finish. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! -Kate
See the TREE appear! I was just using 0000 grit wire wool on an intricate item {stable door handle recessed ring and backplate}....but it isn't mirrorlike...Looks like I will need some much finer grades of paper.
Such a thorough and easy tutorial; thank you! I bought an antique brass mirror, 100+ years old, and it's gorgeous but I can't see anything. I can't wait to actually give it a mirror shine and use it!!
This is probably the most helpful video I've seen on this. Everyone else is just, meh. I've got a brass zippo I'm going to be working on tomorrow. The only issue is it's got one tiny ding I've got to get out first.
I have to try and restore about 30 door kicks 34 in by 16 in.. I used muriatic acid to take off the initial tarnish. But still a lot of uneven discoloration. how long did it take you to do your piece from start to finish??Thank you
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoy my videos. Using a protectant definitely does help, the polish I use does have a little in it, but applying some specifically does help a lot. This was just an early video, were I didn't, but I make sure I do now for any new video
What if I’m doing it my hand and the item is not flat? I have a bell 🔔 I have to polish and they are expecting to be able to see God in the reflection. But I have to do it by hand. Any tips on getting to the grove that forms when the bell skirts out?
Hi, thanks for sharing this video, if I have some small flat brass ( 0.5mm thickness) pcs, then how do I get the mirror effect. And how can I share an image of the small pcs.
@@SkillsandTrade thanks for answer. As an expert of brass. Could you just tell me which way is good to cut 1mm brass? I just want to get 1x3 inch lines.
Absolutely beautiful process and finish (I had tried so many different methods) I was able to acheive such a finish but was out of WD-40 and it was late night. Found that liquid dish soap works awesome and makes cleanup so easy :) Thank you so much for this very detailed video.
Skills and Trade I’ve tried the same, but not getting the same results:( grits: 240-320-800-1500-3000-5000. Should I do it on low or high speed? I am using an electrical sander
You definitely need a high speed drill for this. You should probably send a little slower and don't be afraid to make a second or third pass with the 800. It's important that you smooth out the lower grits before moving on.
Great job! Looks wonderful I've watch a few of your video and now I want a shirt that says. In place it in your Hook & Pad
Thank you. I have been thinking of making some merchandise for a while. I will keep your idea in mind.

Thank you, and you're probably right I shouldn't have done that. Luckily it isn't too noticeable. I appreciate you checking out my video
Brian Oberlin I HATE YOU FOR MAKING ME NOTICE THAT NOW

Your technic is great
Great work
Please make a vid. For detailed pattern
Would you be ableto add a laquer or protective layer to keep it like that?

If you're going to paint the brass, you could try wet sand with the Trizact sand paper once it's painted, then polish.

I've seen so many of these videos, but this is by far the simplest with best results.
Thanks for the video! Thanks even more for the Rick and Morty shirt! Haha!
After achieving the mirror shine, do we need to add any extra protective coating, to maintain the mirror shine?

It took me around 30-45 minutes
isnt the last vertical part getting over polished??!!
The catch was amazing and so is her lower body strength. She hardly budged when he pushed her with his full body weight.
So what you're saying is I need somebody to do this for me.
Steel Wool after 3000?😵💫
R u nuts?🤔
That bottom right corner is getting a lot more sanding than any other section. You end at that corner after every stroke. But still came out great.
The surface is uneven, you can see the reflection of phone lines wriggle as he moves the video camera around.
Do I need a special sander for this or can I buy attachments for a combi drill?
Fantastic videos! I noticed you didn't use a protectant at the end like you did on some of the others. Is there a difference?

Can you recommend a clear durable finish?
It's necessary to do it with a drill with that RPM?
Yes.
This is realy cool work. 💪 Is brass must be polished or we can turn to mirror look any surface of brass with this way ?
You have to polish after sanding to get the mirror shine

Will this oxidise??
How long this mirror stays
Thank you so much for posting this video.
Is it possible to remove bronze plate from brass, on a very small object ?
Where can I get a pair of those kick ass jeans?
What RPM are you running that drill at?
About 2500 RPM for sanding, about 800 or so for the polishing.
Holy moly look at that shine !!
Awesome!
Thank you so much! I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the video
Nice job! What do you take care of shine on brass works after some time? 💚
Bro what?
Awesome, thanks.
How well will clear coat bond if you polish to that extent, im restoring antic door plates and door knobs that are copper
It will bond really well. The polish I used contains a sealant, so if you add a clear coat it will last even longer
A mere finish?
That is so impressive. Thanks
nice video pls send cont & details
Well done video - thanks for the help!

Oh wow what a great job! Did you used any polishing compounds?
If by polishing compound you mean the liquid polish I used, then yes I used Gord's aluminum polish. Thanks for watching, I'm glad you liked the video.
