Maybe, to some people, a "perfect piece" of amber is one with no imperfections to it. But, for me, real amber MUST have imperfections. Lol. It's the imperfections that make a piece interesting! I love looking into clear sections of amber, quartz, etc, to see what's trapped inside. One thing's for sure: it's going to be REALLY OLD, to say the least. :)
That's why I get my rocks and crystals so cheap. I want them to look like what they are so I don't care about what others consider flaws. I'm here because I have a chunk of amber that is just so rough it barely looks like amber and I want to smooth and polish just one side so it actually looks like amber lol. It's a huge chunk and since it's barely recognizable I got it for $3.
I'm so pleased your doggy was ok! I found this video while searching for a way to hand polish some raw amber I have. I love how yours turned out! Thank you for this! I hadn't been able to find anyone else with such good instructions for just a basic, 'I am not a gemologist and don't have a lot of expensive kit' job :)
Glad to hear your dog recovered well. I found your video while needing some help making a decision. I was in process of fitting a large 35mm triangular, tear drop piece of Indonesian amber with volcanic ash. It slipped out of my hands, and dropped on the slate floor, chipping off a huge 18mm x 10mm chunk on the back lower area. Very gently with constant drops of water and using a 4/0 jewellers saw blade, I slowly sliced off the broken piece off the bottom edge. Then used your method of sanding, bowl and toothpaste, and your mix of beeswax an coconut oil to give it a lovely finish. The Amber is slightly smaller by 5mm, and looks good in the sterling silver cap and chain I made. I'd love to show you the finished result, though not sure how to.
Oh my as George Takei says! I'm going to give that a shot! I'm wondering if a pumice Stone would work for some shaping? I've got some garbage grade to test it on. Thanks for the tip!!

I learned something very interesting from this video which has nothing to do with the subject. I am an electronics engineer and in school I learned that the word electricity was derived from the Greek work for amber ēlektron. It got that name thanks in part to the Greek philosopher Thales of Miletus who noted that when amber is rubbed with wool it creates what we now call static electricity. I had always wondered why would anyone be rubbing amber with wool but now I know they were polishing it.
wayne d, thank you luckily he is doing well still. Has to stay on meds because he developed ITP after the transfusion, but is still alive and active which we thank God and the Vets for.

Perfect timing! Bought myself some baltic amber from Poland the other day as I wanted to have a crack at polishing it. For me, I will be trying two "compounds" The first will be a piece of ordinary slate that's kept moist and not pressed hard against. Reason for that is it brings up the edges of my knives (I try and collect them) to a mirror like finish and if it can do that to numerous grades of steel.... The other compound I will use is quite cheap to buy and thats cerium oxide. Now that brings up everything from glass to precious stones like new. Unlike you using a cloth, I will be using moist leather. Bought a bunch of offcuts from ebay real cheap a few years back and am still using the same pack. I read in one of the comments about just using water and leather for much harder material (ruby), so it should work a treat on Amber once I have finished shaping it to how I want it. Thanks for the video, was real informative and I really enjoyed it!! Edit: If you wanna keep the polished amber pistine, dont keep them together in a bag as they knock against each other, cause fractures and chips etc.
@@TrollFaceTheMan Yes thanks. All polished and turned into various bits of jewellery and other ornamentations. Eventually given away to friends and family. Slate was good, but the cerium oxide was better at poutting a really nice polish on the pieces.

I understand, so sorry about your dog. In my younger years a nasty neighbor poisoned my dog and shot my cats so I can relate. Also needed a blood transfusion. How people can be so heartless. Wishing you the best with Caesar, so sad ......
RAREBREED398, thank you and you can only hope so. Somebody else's dog was poised with Antifreeze laced meat a town over about a week later. Unfortunately they didn't make it.
Great video, hope your family and your dog are ok. What's the simpliest way to cut Amber and form it into a perfect circle? I want to make few stones I have into perfect circled beads.
Thank you, glad you liked the video. That is a tough one though. I am not sure there would be any easy way to do that. If they were sufficiently big they could be shaped on a lathe but other than hand sanding that is about all I got.
Thank you. I believe you can wet sand amber fine but when it has stuff like wood and such in it I am not as sure. The wood may absorbed the water even though it should likely be petrified. Oils I would not recommend unless you see it somewhere said as safe as I imagine some oils may eat at the amber.
TOR, get yourself a bench grinder. Take the side plates off that cover the wheels, and replace the grinding wheels with polishing mops. Calico on one side and swansdown on the other. You'll need 2 polishing compounds. White porthos and jeweler's rouge. They can be bought from a jeweler's supply house as can the polishing mops. Before you mount and secure the mops, put a disc of sandpaper on one side or the other, something in the 180 grit should do. Take your amber pice and roll it against the spinning sandpaper until as much of the outside bark and pits are gone as you want. Bark, by the way is not remnants of tree bark. It's just a term that's used to describe the rough outside of amber. Once it's smooth, dip your white porthos in a little kerosene, just one end, not the whole brick, and apply it to the calico mop. Roll your amber against the mop until the sandpaper scratches disappear, then repeat the process with the jeweler's rouge on the swansdown mop until you get a mind boggling polish. Dip the amber in the kerosene and wipe off any residue from the polishing compound and immediately was in warm, soapy water. You're done. Make sure you plug your grinder into some rheostat device so that you can control the RPM's. Most bench grinders spin too fast for this process and will snatch a piece of amber out of your hand and it'll get smashed onto the floor. Trust me, been there and done that. It's the same process as described by TrollFaceTheMan, just kicked up a notch. Get yourself a jeweler's loupe and inspect your clearer pieces of amber for bugs and other inclusions. Amber is fossilized plant resin, so whatever it dropped on 65 million years ago is most likely what's still in there.
hello! love the video! I had one question-- I have this awesome piece of amber but I love it's ridges and it's natural shape, will I still be able to polish it or will I have to shape?
Havent even got into this video. I'm glad your fur child has made it. I wont fill your comments with my fowl language. I'm happy for you. Looking forward to the video. Wish you and yours the best.

Hello omg I'm so sorry to here this. Poor cesar. I'm hoping he is all happy waggy tail now. Stunning amber. Do I always cut and polish when the amber is wet? I have just bought a huge raw amber piece so so scared I will damage it. I am new to this I'm guessing I wet for drilling my hole. Wet for shaping and wet for polishing? Hope you can help thank you so much

I liked your video and would love some advice. I bought a wee bead of tourmaline (it was made into a charm). It's very dull and is faceted and about 4-5mm, what could I do at home to make the facets sparkle a bit? Thanks
i found a cluster piece in jersey yesterday , has black stacked on orange with bits of gold all over it . the place i go is mostly fossils and amber . great spot but i havent ever found gold before .
The scum that poisoned your furbaby should have the same thing done to him, with one small exception the dose of rat poison should be 50 times higher. But in this case there would be NO VET for him or her!!! And you and baby should get to watch the payback, laughing all the while. Shouldn't take to much of your time.
I'm here because I received an amber sphere from a shop and it arrived damaged. I'm trying to find a way to smooth out the damaged part and make it look like something intentional. 😅😅😅
Is that something you still wish to do? And if so please let me confirm that you want to send a piece out to me and not that you want me to buy the piece from you? I apologize I am not trying to be rude but I have had people contact me already about similar stuff however it turned out they wanted me to buy amber they had and because of language barriers it made it hard for them to say this and hard for me to tell them I wasn't interested in buying their amber.
I'm so glad that baby is better..now the ones that would do this to an innocent beautiful creature. Lead between the eyes!! That is only justice they are sure to get. I'm sorry but they don't deserve to live
I've been buying "real genuine baltic amber" recently, and I'm doubting if it is actually real amber because of the sparkly things inside that look like silver leaf flakes or glitter in a way, what are those things??? Or do I have fake amber? 🤔 😔 please help someone..I've tried researching it online and no where can I find this explained?!? Please help someone
Can you do this with Quartz as well? I bought a big piece for a naruto necklace project and i dont have any machines for cutting it and hoping sanding it down to size and shape would work or is quartz to fragile for constant sanding?
Unfortunately quartz would not be really sandable or polishable without the right type of sandpaper or grit and polishing compounds. For sure you can use toothpaste as the Silicon Dioxide in it is Sand, quartz sand to be more specific. So it's the same hardness.
I am so sorry that someone so cruelly hurt your dog. Thank God and your vet he is alive and healing.

Definitely plan to do that when I am in a more permanent place.
I understand, so sorry about your dog. In my younger years a nasty neighbor poisoned my dog and shot my cats so I can relate. Also needed a blood transfusion. How people can be so heartless. Wishing you the best with Caesar, so sad ......
SANDY BROCKMEYER, thank you. Luckily he has been doing well lately. Sorry to hear about what you had to go through too.
Hope you knocked the lights out of those neighbours then.
Please make video of how to polish raw aventurine
I haven't heard of that. But I will look into it.
People who kill animals shoulb be treated as equally as if they have killed a human.
I'm so sorry. Glad he's ok. Love and light
Thank you.
Karma is going to make that heartless person who poisoned that beautiful baby.....so happy every thing is ok...
Hi, new veiwer and sub here 🌟. Can you work this way with water or oil? I like that you left the tree bark, looks amazing, great work. 👍🏼🇳🇿
THANK GOD that your dog is alive and making a great recovery! I’m so sorry to hear about that.
Thank you.
I’m so sorry to hear about your dog. That was a cruel thing to do to a poor dog.
Thanks, and yes it was. I hope those aholes get what's coming to them.
hello! love the video! I had one question-- I have this awesome piece of amber but I love it's ridges and it's natural shape, will I still be able to polish it or will I have to shape?
You can if you decide to. No matter what polishing will round it slightly though.
Havent even got into this video. I'm glad your fur child has made it. I wont fill your comments with my fowl language. I'm happy for you. Looking forward to the video. Wish you and yours the best.
Thank you
Glad to hear your dog IS ok!!! There's some sick bastards Out there!!
Yes there is. Luckily he mad a full recovery and was with up several more happy years.
Fantastic have to try it got some Brazil’s amber it blue should turn out so thank u
If you do I'd live to see how it looks.
Amen to your animal, how cruel others are. fantastic job looks much simplier than i ever dreamed it could be, God bless
Thank you.
Try using 600 then 1000grit sandpaper after that first step. Then finish polishing with turtle wax polishing compound and a peice of corduroy.
That is just an awful thing for someone to do. How sad! I’m so glad that caesar is recovering.
I polished my sapphires they look amazing
Epic
What did you use? This method shouldn't work with sapphire as they'd be too hard for the sandpaper to cut or the toothpaste polish.
I'm sorry some POS poisoned your dog 😢 I'm glad he's doing good now. Hope he has a full recovery. Did the police find who it was, I hope so. If not, just know Karma always shows up! This is an awesome video, I subscribed and I'm going to try the toothpaste polishing. Thanks so much. Looking forward to more of your videos 👍👍
Hope you can help thank you so much
Came for the Amber, stayed because I was so PISSED someone could POISON a doggo! MFERS! 🤬
Good 👍 video bro
Thanks

Hi, do you know How to polishing diamont into shining? Thanks for your experience😊
I liked your video and would love some advice. I bought a wee bead of tourmaline (it was made into a charm). It's very dull and is faceted and about 4-5mm, what could I do at home to make the facets sparkle a bit? Thanks
Use nail polish for shine and smoothness!
I haven't tried that. May definitely work but I don't know if it might negatively affect the piece in the long term.
Omg your poor baby!!!! I am so sorry you and your baby had to go through that. There are some mean people out in the world.
that was really lovely amber
Thank you.
i found a cluster piece in jersey yesterday , has black stacked on orange with bits of gold all over it . the place i go is mostly fossils and amber . great spot but i havent ever found gold before .
The scum that poisoned your furbaby should have the same thing done to him, with one small exception the dose of rat poison should be 50 times higher.
But in this case there would be NO VET for him or her!!! And you and baby should get to watch the payback, laughing all the while. Shouldn't take to much of your time.
Thank you. Very helpful and informative.
I'm here because I received an amber sphere from a shop and it arrived damaged. I'm trying to find a way to smooth out the damaged part and make it look like something intentional. 😅😅😅
Thank God your dog is ok...thanks for your videos...keep up the good work & God bless you.
Thanks.
I hope the person or persons that poisoned your dog got what was coming to them.
Ooh nasty, hope you doddy is feeling better, useful and interesting video, thank you🐱💕
Thank God your pet is going to be fine. The person that did that is truly evil.
Yes
If it is really amber then those might be mica flakes. Which can be both shiney and silvery looking
Sad about the dog. Hope he's still ok.
He was for several years. However passed away recently unfortunately.
Beautiful...apakah lebih mahal dari diamond..?
Hope your pup is still doing well!
Thank you. He was actually doing great up until he passed earlier this year from something unrelated. He was amazing.
My phone threw me off your vid and now it's all black and white.
Weird.
Hope you have cameras with sound and motion sensors. And alarms.
Hi how do one get to brighten it's gem stone, like what's the name or the type of sampaper do I use please
So glad your beautiful dog is OK now. That's horrible that he was poisoned. ' Just awful!
Thank you. We were lucky he made a full recovery. And we were blessed with him for several more years.
So sorry to hear about your dog Geoff tasmania
Dam who poisoned your dog... bless you stay safe all the best to you and your family
Another way to tell if it’s real Amber if you find it on the beach is to tap it on your teeth - it will feel like plastic, not stone ❤
Amber is beautiful even rough! Anyway good work!
Yes it can look awesome for sure :)
💔😓🙏🙏🙏 So sorry for your's dog!
Good luck in future!
❤🎉
Whats the black paper underneath to polish
What about a Dremel for those uneven surface areas? Enjoyed your video. Thank you. 👍🏻
Sure they can be used, but what to use a fine grit to not gouge the surface.
Which paper use 1000 300 2000 200
Nice video, I love Amber, Baltic Amber is the best! Very pretty stones.
Thanks
👍🇻🇳👍💎💎❤️❤️
