In the manga, Roy is considered a hero in the Ishval genocide because the people in his command suffered basically zero deaths, this is mainly due to the fact that, unlike Kimbley's explosion alchemy, Flame alchemy is totally discriminate, meaning that only things that mustang want to burn will burn. Also it is a testament to Mustang's character, that he is willing to put himself in danger over everyone else in his charge. The scenes in this episode show his sheer power, but he deviates from a core belief when he puts his own desires above everything else that matters, to a gleeful degree.
This is what Lust warns him about when she is killed by him, his first Homunculus kill was to protect everyone else around him, and his second was just pure hatred driven vengeance .

From what I gathered in watching this series several times.
I don’t think the problem is that Mustang is killing Envy.
It’s just that he’s wasting time enjoying seeing Envy in pain.
Unlike Lust who he used full power attacks for a quick end, here he takes his time slowly letting Envy regenerate his body only to destroy them again.
Where he was trying to kill Lust. He’s just torturing Envy in his blind wrathful quest for vengeance.
And it’s doing nothing but satisfying his desire, where he should just burn him hard and fast and help Edward stop Father.

nah my dude the reason they didnt want mustang to kill envy is because mustang is suppose to become the next fuhrer, but what good is that going to do is mustang succumbs to his base instincts and become a rabid dog who only abides by his emotions? a ruler must be calm and collected, but also rule with compassion and understanding. if mustang would've gone and listen to his id, he would step over the line that can never be uncrossed for the rest of his life. its kind of like in batman dark knight when harvey dent steps over that line and becomes two-face and he can never be the white knight of gotham.

Even so, the level of Mustang's rage was terrifying. That's when you understand why Risa was concerned when he burned Lust to death. Scar understood all too well what the need for vengeance can turn someone into. Mustang risks becoming the very thing that he fights to defeat.
Even so, Envy deserves every bit of the pain he is going through and will get in the next episode....and it still wouldn't come close to the amount he deserves for all the evil that he's responsible for.

Because I'm pretty sure he told Scar Envy started it and planned it by shooting a little girl in the face, while impersonating someone else. Plus like Hughes… Mustang and Hawkeye accepted the responsibility for their actions for what both the homunculi… AND the military started.

I think you've got it in the second half there. Envy enjoys starting conflicts, and he relishes watching people kill people, but this is largely because it reaffirms his intrinsic belief that homunculi (that Envy, specifically, is) are superior to humans, who are baser, and easily manipulated creatures. And this is why he gets incredibly irritated and pissed off when it doesn't work, and of course in the next episode, why it really screws with him when he's confronted with the truth of the indomitable human spirit that trumps him and his machinations.

Idk why, maybe there was something relatable in his motives and what he was envious of, but also not really. Maybe it's just that I find villains like him fun and seeing them get hurt and ruined is normally fun, just something different. Maybe it felt like I was getting hurt too just cuz I had grown a connection to Envy. But either way, amazing episode. Now I can watch it and root for Mustang aswell and this episode now is a lot more enjoyable. This probably didn't make sense but I thought I'd might aswell say something about this episode. Probably felt bad because no matter how much you hate Envy he's still very clearly being tortured to death. Mustang is toying with him, waiting for him to regrow his body just so he can destroy it again, causing the maximum amount of pain possible purely for the sake of it. Not saying his wrath isn't understandable nor that I'd act any different in his place, I have no idea, but torture is still torture in the end.
On top of that Envy's flawed, he's broken and probably has been from the start, as all 7 homunculii are to a degree, he was born from Father, he's nothing but a piece to a whole. It can be kind of tough to judge a person's behavior or actions when you know one of his emotions is very much overshadowing all others in his brain, he sees things through the warped lens of jealousy, which isn't exactly a goody two shoes emotion when pushed to such an extreme.
His twisted personality comes from that, down to his sadistic nature. For example if you feel VERY envious of another person there will likely be a part of your brain that will start wanting that guy to suffer like hell, lose everything he holds dear and whatnot. Now that doesn't mean you'll take action and there can be multiple reasons for it, roughly summarizing those would get us something along the lines of morality, fear of consequences and lack of power. Whichever one - possibly a mix of several - stops you in your tracks Envy simply doesn't feel/understand it or perhaps he just doesn't care, hard to say. Regardless my point is he wasn't "brought up" with such concepts.
His broken self plus the unbelievable pain he's being subjected to can certainly incur pity in the spectator.

Envy is just evil. In shows like this we expect and accept that. Like Kenny mentioned Joker, there’s a reason he’s terrible but still so popular and it’s because he leans into it so people are more willing to overlook things like “well of course he did that”
With characters like Reiner it’s the betrayal that evokes such deep emotion. And it’s the attempted justification of doing something so clearly evil (at least as far as it’s presented in the earlier seasons)

I really like that question about feeling bad for Envy because it stumps me too. I think the idea behind feeling bad for a character that has done serious wrong is really interesting and depends on the writing and how we are with them. I think with Envy his torture is a bit worse than Reiner's visually having your tongue and eyes boiled is really gruesome. It reminds me of Crime and Punishment. I'll never forget when we finished my teacher asked us what should happen to the main character and if anyone knows the story he is an axe murderer. We all wanted good things for him and she just repeated to us he is an axe murderer of two. It just dawned on all of us that we felt so much compassion for this character anyway. It really speaks to the human condition honestly.

A while back, I commented how there was an aspect of Mustang's team that you hadn't mentioned. I was waiting until now to post it, because I didn't want to spoil it. Remember when the team was split up and Mustang got that chess board, and how he mused how he was losing all of his pieces? That was foreshadowing for their roles here. Hawkeye is the queen for obvious reasons; she's the closest to the king and the most powerful. Breda is the rook, the second most powerful piece; he can set up many moves as both an attacker and defender, and was essential in smuggling in weapons and people in and out of Amestris. Havoc is the knight; he can jump into battle the fastest, can do well in the endgame if he's in a safe position, but can't deal with attacks at point blank range... like how Lust took him out. Falman is the bishop; he gets stronger the longer the game goes on, and was essential in getting General Armstrong and the rest of Briggs to be part of Mustang's plan, and whose historical knowledge helped unveil the Homunculi's plans. And lastly, Fuery, the pawn; he can't do much offensively, but is capable of causing a lot of damage if positioned perfectly... like using communication expertise to keep the team off the military's radar early on, and using his connections to set up the radio broadcast involving Mrs. Bradley to legitimize Mustang's plan to the public.

Hi Kenny! Hi Montana! I really wish I could be a part of your patreon but I’m still a broke college student. that being said, I am a film studies student and I find that your reactions provide me with awesome new perspective! You are both incredibly media literate and empathetic which I very love to see! I would really want to see you guys react to chainsaw man. It is a show to offers more than what one might expect from it. Keep up the good work! love you guys!

This and next episode for this arc can be considered as even better than the grand finale of this show. Not that the finale doesn’t get pulled off fantastic. But if there were a Homunculi people were waiting to see them get what was coming for them. Envy I guarantee has to be on top of the list.
Envy caused the Ishvalan War, Envy caused the plague that killed Trisha. Envy tortured Ling and Ed from within Gluttony. Envy killed Hughes. Envy has done nothin but cause pain and has at no point invoked something else. Every other Homunculi has done so much much, but it’s not a full constant for any of them.
Mustang and Riza have an oath of straying the path of the future they envision. They tortured many souls in Ishval and both have nothing but regret for it. And their path is to make up for it. And Mustang is slipping from doing the job and savoring in the torture he is inflicting deserved or no.
Ed truly has built a whole family out of his comrades. Elder sibling Chimeras. Crazy uncle Greed. His mother and father are Mustang and Hawkeye. And SO many more. The brothers just keep adding to their family. And no one no matter how distant falls in place. Even with Scar.
This finale is the framework of how to manage an enormous cast in a finale. You need SO much going on at once to pull even HALF of the characters off. And I’ve been watching this intently for MHA purposes. Which has to follow the same framework in some form.
This is honesty one of the best finales anime has to offer

You're misunderstanding the whole "crowd of people, squirming around" line. The "crowd of people" May thinks she's sensing is actually the scores and scores of souls trapped in Father's Philosopher's stone. She's basically sensing people stacked on top of people, stacked on top of people, like thousands of people all standing in *one spot* which is why it's so horrifying to her.

I can't wait for my kids to appreciate this anime and the manga, we were watching the live action movies and they liked it and now we started the anime (I had the eldest age when I first watched it), till now they are so into pretending to be mustang or ed and al, they snap their fingers and look for cool alchemist names hahaha and.. after the first live action movie, as with naruto, they arrived to the conclusion that "mom, that's how we'll bring you back if you die" 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲 now their religion teacher will have a lo to talk about at our meeting I guess 😅 the last time she told me: 'we were talking about the resurrection (last Easter), so your eldest said he knew what it was, he watched it in naruto, what's naruto by the way?, he said it's a ninja technique" 😅

Haikyuu has to be an anime in consideration. It's one of the best, most well balanced series out there. Lots of great characters with tons of growth, good humor, amazing action, satisfying plot, BANGER music. That and Kaguya-sama are the only shows i can think of that can live up to FMA:B honestly.
