This story ends way too soon. We're told they had to win over the Japanese consumers. Didn't know that, interesting. But then we're never told HOW they accomplished that. Disappointing.

Ramen is a noodle dish that is inspired from a Chinese noodle dish. It's like italian spaghetti that is inspired by Chinese noodles (the chinese invented the noodles/pasta). So, Ramen is a japanese dish INSPIRED in chinese noodle.
Hey heres how Norwegian guy:Heres a Pacific salmon Japanese guy: mmm! Tastes good! after eating Norwegian guy: its actually Atlantic. Japanese guy: ok. bUt iT tAsTes gUd.
I'm not sure if it's just our supplier or maybe the season, but at our Japanese restaurant, the salmon is my least favorite sashimi or nigiri. In sushi with other ingredients I dont mind as much, but all on its own, it has a distinct, chemical-like tank taste and smell to it. Our tuna is second worst. But once you get into the red snapper, yellowtail and surf clam, everything is fresh and wild tasting.
Just for clarity the term sushi itself is Japanese and indeed the base "sushi" is of Japanese origin. It's the introduction of salmon (the ingredient) that was brought to Japan, not the dish "sushi" itself. Also how accurate is this because a channel I watched showed a newspaper article showcasing a sushi dish made of Salmon in America in 1975, which means salmon sushi was already being consumed and prepared in the States prior to its popularity in Japan.
Hmmm, I worked in a Sushi restaurant in NYC in 1984 as a waiter when I was a student. At that time, they already had salmon sushi. So probably that NYC salmon sushi's origin was not from Norway. Or was it? In this video, Bjorn stated that he started working for that project to sell salmon to Japan in 1986, but probably that does not mean the project itself did not exist before that.
Okay, salmon sushi became popular in Japan after 1995 due to Norwegian salmon, this does not mean that before that date there was no salmon sushi in the world.
Most people in North America don't have their keyboards set up for typing most accented characters. Since most English speaking people never have to type an accented character in their daily life, they don't change their keyboard, and they don't learn the alt codes for typing those characters. Yes, it is incorrect not to use the accented o, but I'm sure 100% of the people who read the comment understood the intended message.
This video is not entirely accurate. If you look up a channel called My Name Is Andong, he found a source that refers to salmon sushi in the US around the 1970s/1980s. But still, the accomplishment by Bjorn to popularize salmon sushi in Japan is impressive.
I hate when they half-ass a video like this. I’m surprised they bothered to make the phone call. It’s little better than the old “Did You Know?” sidebars in Houghton-Mifflin textbooks.
Interresting! I like mackerel (in Japanese ; SABA) better than salmon (in Japanese; SAKE)... Most of the mackerel sold at grocery stores in Japan are also from Norway ... So thank you Norway~
Norwegian salmon is better to eat raw due to the cold climate in the ocean. If you go to warmer oceans and fish the salmon is more prone to having parasites, so it's not safe to use them for sushi. :)
If the Norwegian have plenty of salmon and very little market then why did they kept on fishing? It seems to me they only depleted the ocean unnecessaryily
I make it myself I’m German and we have a River called the Nette and there are a lot of salmon that’s safe to eat I deep fry it for 7 days by -20degrees and then I take Sushi rice (Rice that’s washed 3 times and have a special Japanese sauce on it) and it’s soooooo good 😂
I think it's not a question of Atlantic/Pacific, but is a question of farmed or wild. Norway had established a parasite-free salmon farming technology, while Japan didn"t even have the idea of eating salmon raw.
Salmon sushi was a thing in the USA at the latest 1975. It appeared in multiple newspapers and cooking articles. While Norway may have popularized it in Japan, it did not invent salmon sushi.
