"we make the little sushi to make our customers happy" omg... warmed my heart.. what a sweet old man
Iva Maharjan that’s what most people would do, well japanese elders mostly, and me.
I would know because I had some Japanese experiences and I am japanese.
But we all love sushi so we’re all the same except for people who never ate sushi and hates them for no reason without tasting.
“Even though I am a lazy person, I like the process of making funazushi” is a statement that manages to radiate energy
That guy when he sees that Americans don’t like seaweed:
*Im going to do what’s called a pro-gamer move.*
Lol no one commented I spoiled that
Chef Tojo still has his restaurant here in Vancouver. Yum yum.
I wish i could go there, but I'm so far!
@@lunaaaam, next time I go there, I'll eat some original cal roll thinking of you. 😊
What’sit called, I might check it out

Did anyone else notice some bits of the second story had the audio were there Was subs but they just weren't speaking?

This is common with bigstory sadly
California rolls are definetly a gate way roll, i wouldnt eat one today, at least not if i could choose other sushi, but i appreciate it as an option for people who might be picky eaters
No. They must dive all in...
Interestingly my first favorite sushi roll wasnt the california roll. I liked everything but hadnt got a taste for seaweed yet so the first roll that actually got me into sushi used a soy wrap. Its a local roll and still ine if my favorites. Cucumber shrimp tempora, with honey and unagi sause with a soy wrap and extra tempura bits. I think it also has avocado too but its been awhile 😂
@@Hokuto_Tongi only the strong survive
PupVinsky Model 4 ahhh, you understand my Wooferian friend.
I've never in my life had a California roll but I love sushi lol

Well california roll isnt from california
@@nurudaddy I work as a sushi chef, and I was honestly really shocked by this.
The third guy would not have a problem looking for food if he was stranded
Kastkle Rotmg do you mean the third guy? the second guy is just making preserved fish lol

Yeah... a lot of American/Americanized food was made in Canada

**CRASH**
"Great!"
I love how the music cuts.
The funazushi bit is missing some sound clips. It's silent where there are clearly captions.
Five are you the only person beside me who noticed?
Three
Yeah that was a little weird
four
Ten.
Wait what goes after Four?
The last clip about the giant and mini sushi warmed my heart
it warmed my brain... I'm trying to figure out how you eat that..
The third guy seems honestly like....a good overall guy. I wish there were more people like that
NcampLax I love him
There are~
Making the California roll was probably like putting the lettuce on the outside of the bread
Like the beesechurger.
Ah, now I understand!
I had really grown tired of Sushi and whenever I'd find myself in a Japanese restaurant, I'd be desperately exploring everything on their menu that wasn't sushi or sushimi... until I was at a proper, expensive restaurant one day and was advised I should really eat the sushi there. Then I realised that I had originally grown tired of sushi because of all the CRAP out there! Tasting proper sushi again was such a delight, I'm now VERY picky where I choose to eat good, worthwhile food and not the cheap immitation stuff.
Well, suit yourself.
Sushi is sushi 🍣
@@coronavirus8551 Wrong, 90% of it out there is cheap and nasty
@Dust My Broom That's what I thought until I had the good stuff again
@@otomeng5230 I wouldn't do anything else.....
Crunchy Rolls are they best gateway sushi. California rolls have gone down in quality and you can literally get them frozen by the pack
They were never that great in my opinion, I mean it was literally created to appeal to foreigners
@@cassinova9241 I mean food changes when it's exposed to new countries. That being said I am sure a fresh homemade/restaurant made high quality California roll would be good. But don't get them in frozen packs
People around the world call us “Sushi 🍣 people“ and I love it.
At the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival they have a thing called Frushi which is pretty good
We need to protect the old man at the end's laugh at all costs
This channel is SOO GOOOD I'm very glad I found it!
California roll is the gateway roll for me. Thanks Chef

What a Great Big Story. I mean, for real.
This helped me a lot. Thank you.
thank you for your work!
Oh my gosh, I love the last guy. His sushi restaurant looks like a place I used to frequent when I lived in Japan. A jovial old sushi master used to serve my brother and me sushi. I miss Japan.
1:23 that’s the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard 🥺 “just loul”
11:36
He actually says "I opened my restaurant in December, 1950"
1975...?
He said, "gojyunen no jyunigatsu" or "December of year 50." Year 50 of Showa (Japanese calendar) is 1975.
@@gluttonykk thanks!
What creative, brave, and cool people are alive in my world today. I'm blessed to be alive in the age of sushi .
Toasted nori is a favorite snack for me and my cat (spoiled little butt), and I've answered to Sushi for a quarter of a century. I learned to make sushi (haka-nare) more 20 years ago, and I still make a vegetarian chirashizushi regularly as comfort food. Someday, I will visit Japan and eat both haka-nare and hon-nare as prepared by classically trained chefs. It's my favorite food ever. 💚
I am glad to hear that you like sushi! (Chirashi-zushi for comfort? Great!) By the way, is your favorite snack Japanese one or salted Korean? Just curious. (And it is Haya-nare, not Haka-nare. Haya- means quick/fast.)
“These snails... from Europe... they’re called European snails...”
OMG I had to pause to get the laughs out, this was great
There some "missing sound" in narration
Sushi is literally my favorite food ever 😍 thank you so much for posting this and making me hungry 😭❤️
Cool!! I too started with california maki 🥰🥰🥰 Thank you chef tojo
“ The California roll is.... not from California.”
Me, an Californian, “NoOoOoO! Lies!”
(P.S this is a joke, pls don’t hate, I still love California Roll. :)
Ok
Also the pizza hawaii is from Canada. Canada is shame for cultural food.
Your Mother lol
You had me at Sushi Around the World. Instant like. Hurray to Chef Tojo. Thank you Bjorn. Holy cow on the giant sushi. Overall, great video.
Oh god... this is making my mouth drool.
i would love to ask the third guy: how do you even know something is edible or poisonous?
Leonsius Honggo He knows which food to grab :) He’s studied.
12:41. It is impossible for ine person to eat over 2 pounds of eel-sushi.

it's so weird. 10-15 years ago, I couldn't find a sushi place to save my life. They were ONLY in "fancy" cities like LA, NYC, Chicago, etc. NOW, I can pick up sushi in my local grocery store made by Asian sushi makers (i won't go so far as to call them "sushi masters"). But now I'm on a new quest...for funazushi! :-D BTW the bug sushi dude needs to make a bee-line for AFRICA. Apparently there are trillions of them (locusts mostly!)
Funazushi is really hard to make--it takes 3 years and crazy skills so the fish don't taste nasty. I don't think you'll be finding funazushi any time soon in North America, unfortunately...
How dare you break my heart my telling me that.
Wha

Why are u in every video I watch-

Sushi is my favorite food and I really like this video
I would love to try Funazushi!
Please do! I am from Shiga prefecture. My grandmother used to buy a barrel of Funa-zushi to give some away to the families and relatives. Nowadays it is so expensive and rare that we cannot enjoy often. I miss it. (Especially the female's eggs.)

This was Fascinating.
I have eaten at Chef Tojo's Restaurants In Vancouver and Toronto.
AMAZING sushi.
RUclips, thanks for this channel
🍣🍱🍤 around the 🌏 I'm here 4 it. Sushi is on a roll with the new appearance. Looking good.
I really didn't realise how young sushi was, I eat it quite often and have been rather stunned at a lot of older people not liking it, this explains way.
I wish you could have interviewed my childhood absolute favorite sushi restaurant. The lady that owned it is over 100 years old. Incredible woman. Two gigantic squishy teddy bears (i believe from a Japanese cartoon show) greet you at the front door, about the height of a 6-7 year old child. On your b-day she makes a beautiful swan out of thinly sliced apples and a flower out of an orange, other fruit, and bowl of ice cream. Then the entire staff turns off the lights and sings happy birthday and usually the entire restaurant joins. Then she has the most amazing calligraphy skills and draws you a magnificent card that’s colorful and fancy saying “happy birthday (name)!” With lovely flower designs and such outlining the card. I have the cards saved from every year I’ve went for my b-day taped along my walls. Let me remind you, over a 100 years old still walking around the restaurant greeting customers and welcoming people and doing all this precise knife skills and calligraphy. At the end of your meals she offers everyone, including adults, a box of Japanese candies about 10-12 pieces of hard candy wrapped in rice paper with a sticker inside a small box. Sadly, her lovely small sushi restaurant burnt down from an electrical fire and I’m not sure if they have finished rebuilding.
The lady sounds amazing! I hope the restaurant can be rebuilt. Do you mind me asking where this is? There might be information online if they plan to reopen.
@@VividReads I think in either El Cerrito California or Albany California
1:05 this is gold 🤣🤣😂
"even though I'm a lazy person, I love making funazushi."
With such an effort he put to make funazushi, how come he thinks he's a lazy person.
What he said kind of got lost in translation, he didn't exactly mean he's "lazy", he said he doesn't do what I can only closely describe as "a thing that is a pain in the ass to do because it's tedious" but he still enjoys the process of making funazushi.
(I'm not japanese nor do I speak it but this is just something I learnt, I could be wrong too!)
I would die for chef tojo.
...we do eat raw pork here in Germany, it's called "Mett". Can report it tastes great, but has to have good quality of course. =D
wow that IS pretty scary to me haha
SUSHI IS IN MY HEART
I've eaten at Tojo's a few times. It's excellent if expensive. Vancouver has a crazy number of sushi restaurants. Somewhere around 600 of them making them similar in prevalence to coffee shops.
inside out roll, quite interesting :D
is this a reupload? because i feel like I've seen all of these before
When I visited Japan in 2018 they didn't have one bit of salmon on offer in any of the sushi places I ate in. The only time I had salmon there was cooked in a breakfast!
The Japanese love sushi tuna best it was everywhere...I can only assume sushi salmon is still not acceptable to eat in Tokyo at least?! Does anyone have a different opinion based on their travels over there?
Chef Tojo literally did Genjutsu on us
Great. Midnight and now I want sushi.
My first sushi experience sucked so since haven’t had the guts to try again but maybe soon.. 💪🏼 😂
Comes from Korean idea called Kimbap. Kimbap is a rolled long traditional was use for picnic.
This was all so wonderful 😍💜🌌, but now I'm hungry 😂😦😢💜
*He do be eating that wild lettuce doe*
I find it funny that the same thing happens in the Caribbean when eating lionfish it is pretty much the only fish that has no restrictions when hunted and it's pretty tasty
0:53 He sounds so cute lol
0:41 nice sushi flip
Make that giant sushi salmon and you’ve got a deal! That would be heaven!
Canadians invented the California roll!
You learn something every day don’t you.
Well, he's a Japanese immigrant. He still has a restaurant here.
Its not Canadians, its a Japanese immigrant
I mean technically yes, but no
Michael Dob he’s Japanese-Canadian :)
How long does someone living in Canada, considering themselves a Canadian to make them a Canadian?
Also this guy is only one of the many that have claimed to invent the cali roll
I’m from the U.S and I LOVE seaweed
Wow thats crazy
10:55 great big sushi
New haven? I’m like 15 minutes from there lmao
Love to see another person that lives in ct
I've been missing sushi during this quarantine
SAMEEEE
fortunate that I’m commenting this from the future
Does it have different taste from dried fish bought in Southeast Asia?
The California roll was like the cup noodles for sushi.
Not gonna fib: Chef Bun Lai is looking just as good as the sushi he prepares. 🌊
Great video
Salmon is my favorite sashimi and sushi. 🍣
“If some guy comes up to you with raw pork and tells you eat it raw it’s safe and delicious.”
“Man, you’re crazy.”
If you put it that way (since Japan ate raw fish before) we would have to have been eating raw meat beforehand
12:41: It's impossible for one person to eat over 2 pounds of eel sushi. Normally, it takes three people.
Matt Stonie: CHALLENGE ACCEPTED
What goes into the Funazushi? It looked like there was aged roe inside
Fresh water fish called Funa are fermented in the steam-cooked rice. When you eat, you scrape the rice off. The bright orange part is eggs.
I want sushi now 🍣
7:24 You don't say "alright" just once !!
Alright! Alright! Alright?
The 2nd video's audio appears to be not work fully
They cut some part from the original leaving the captions on.
You all should see East Side Sushi
11:24 you don't need fancy knives to be a good chef: $40, $1, $1, $10. Hats off to Chef Inagaki.
You will be missed Great big story
the last guy was so cute :')
The best California roll I ate is in San Francisco. The best multiple Nigiri sushi I ate is from a small restaurant in Ebisu, Tokyo. The best fancy sushi I have tried had truffle in Japantown in LA.
