IMO the best news source to learn about something, objectively as possible listen to news sources with competing interests. Between all the bs they peddle, omissions, selective sourcing of experts, and so on... you can usually figure out what are common factual points of agreement.. If some important detail is in dispute, , I try to cross reference with statistical sources., accredited academic (specializing in the actual field), or primary sources. I'm in Australia and it's the same. A noticeable increase in just this last year. There are many Tesla's but also a big increase in BYD models. With all the new brands coming this year to Australia at least, people mightn't realise the actual increase as they mightn't recognise them as an ev. Tesla's certainly stand out more.

Goldman Sachs have predicted EV batteries will be half the price they are now by 2026. This will make EVs significantly cheaper. I think that will open the floodgates.

I work in the UK car industry, selling EVs. The market is very very difficult, despite what any figures say. The UK population is NOT buying EVs easily. All EVs are sold on lease terms and the leasing companies have been taking heavy losses from terrible EV residuals. These are facts. The main problem is the government’s ZEV mandate which forces EV sales above demand without any real incentives for the private buyer. So residual values collapse. All manufacturers are having to support EV sales with huge discounts which are not sustainable. This is because of the ZEV mandate. 20% is easy to do? No, it isn’t. Any approach that forces supply instead of incentivises demand will not be very effective. The UK’s issue is not media. Media has been way behind what is really happening at every step of the way. The issue is that it is far more expensive to own an EV than a petrol car because of terrible residuals. This arises because sales are being forced above demand without any thought as to incentivising the used market. The brick wall is coming quickly into view.
Temporary issue. At the start of a paradigm shift the new units are expensive and not high quality and lose value quickly. We are at the point where people will only buy the early issue units at a very heavy discount because the new far superior units are dropping in price quickly. This creates a temporary situation where it looks like BEV’s don’t hold value. The reality is that BEV manufacturing is starting to mature in China. Soon an affordable EV will be the same or cheaper than an equivalent gas car. If the West doesn’t wake up fast the fossil fuel industry will destroy the economy by ensuring that China owns the future of energy and transportation
Leasing EVs is the standard due to pace of change of the technology. I would not dream owning my own EV at the moment. Changes to tech mean that it would be ‘obsolete’ in 3-4 years. I am about to go to my 3rd EV and every one has been better than the last one by miles.
In general people don't realise the residual value until they try to change their cars. It's obvious how low prices are to buy a three year old EV. There's little UK car industry left and that's foreign owned.

It's not a lie. Consumers aren't buying EVs. Fleet sales, businesses wanting some climate credits, are driving the numbers. The fleet sales are driven by government mandates and are not natural.

EVs are as yet not a practical's solution for the UK and if you don’t believe me ask someone who lives in a flat and owns one and is trying to sell it. VW and BMW are building their cars in China. I saw a stat yesterday that says 80% of electric vehicles originate from China so how does a drop in sales affect the UK economy? Half million folk out fitting charging stations? We have an EV through the government disability scheme which makes it only tolerable. Generally we run a power lead from the house across the pavement and charge the car that way if we’re lucky enough to get parking close enough to do so. After our shopping the other day we left the car on charge at the pod and spent £8 in the cafe while we waited for a top up of 4/5% and that charge only covered what was used in the 5-10 minutes we used letting the car defrost before we went shopping and when people ask me about the joys of EV motoring I tell the truth. We won’t be getting another one they are an absolute joke.

Exactly. Yes world sales are going up but in the UK although they are rising it's no great rush to buy. Private buyers, that is, someone walking in to a showroom with their own money or a loan is practically non existant. Most are either bought or should I say leased via some sort of business/company deal. It could be argued you are just renting a car not buying it. The official UK trade body only records "registrations" not actual cars on the road. So far there have been very few cars that most people can afford.. Instead of arguing who is winning the argument time will tell. We are now getting to the stage where used ex company cars are becoming available so we will see what happens with the used market. The UK is not in a good way and there may be a recession on the way so buying ANY type of new car will be way down on anyones list.

Yes and no! If you get a new car on a PCP or lease, this is classed as fleet, because the buyer is a company and they lease the car to you. The driver may well be an individual. No one can say what the numbers are for this I’m afraid. What is true is private buyers for new cars are a tiny percentage now, both EV and ICE as they are too expensive to finance/buy for almost everyone.

It's not only the time mag, all médias have changed their discourse about EVs. They clearly want to influence negatively the potential buyers, listing all the reasons why EV are expensive and unpractical. But some years ago the same media were venting EVs for their lower climate impact.
Here in the UK 1 in 10 cars sold to private buyer's is an EV. 40% of cars have no off road parking, 7pence per kW only possible with cheap home night rate charging. The 20% overall sold as EV were due to fleet buyers taking advantage of tax breaks. In the UK there is thousands of unsold EV's with less than 500 miles and 2 or 3 owners.

As a sales agent who often covers over 300 miles a day, electric cars just aren’t viable for me yet. I’ve driven the Tesla Long Range AWD several times. While it claims a 389-mile range, in winter it realistically delivers only around 280 miles. The process of stopping to charge is simply impractical when factoring in the time to locate a charger, plug in, wait, unplug, and get back on the road. In the UK, we now have the Tesla Model 3 Single Motor Long Range, but even that falls short for my needs. Ideally, you should only charge the battery to 85% or 90% to mitigate wear, which further reduces usable range. I'm waiting for electric cars to consistently deliver a real-world range of 350 miles from a 90% charge before considering a purchase. However, my budget is capped at approximately £35,000, which means I might be waiting a bit longer. Hopefully, within the next 18 months, technological advancements like semi-solid state batteries will change all that. We aren’t there yet, but I remain optimistic about the near future.
That’s totally understandable - EV’s aren’t yet suited for that high and time-pressured mileage. Sympathies if you do that, sounds like over 1,000 miles a week! Eventually EV’s will cover this, but you’ve got until 2035 for Hybrids so there should be time. I would have thought for you, the more critical thing would be infrastructure and charging speed as you wouldn’t want to sit for 30 to 45 minutes to charge.
You can't be doing much productive work if you are covering 300 miles per day..... Why do you need to "locate" a charger when Tesla's satnav shows you where they are? I don't get why charging is such an issue, with Tesla Superchargers being capable of adding 75 miles of range for every 5 minutes the car is hooked up to the charger. A 15 minute stop would give you 200+ miles of range. Are you saying you can't/won't stop for 15 minutes during a 300 mile drive?

It's not lithium metal, but lithium salts. So imagine steel compared to rust dissolved in acid as an analogy. Makes it much more difficult to extract. Metal you can melt like wax, but the salts require a complex chemical process to extract them. And the processing to extract and separate the salts usually involves some nasty toxic intermediate chemistry. Makes it very expensive and energy intensive to recycle lithium batteries.👍🏻🇬🇧

A lot to unpick here. Firstly I would point out that charging infrastructure companies are certainly not going to make major long term investment plans based on newspaper articles. The claim that this will undermine strategy is ridiculous. Companies do their own research and are perfectly able to read the data and would go to primary sources, not rely on newspaper articles. The other thing I would point out is that it is simply not true to imply that European car makers were against government EV mandates. They have, for years, worked with both the UK government and the EU commission to formulate these plans, and have supported them strongly. The car makers truly did believe the hype about EV cars taking over the world and saw regulations in a favorable light. Ie, they can benefit from these mandates - and subsidies - to sell more EVs. Only now are they beginning to see the problems. I guess they didn't foresee China taking over. Finally, in my view, the banner to the video is overstating a point. True, the article was wrong to suggest that UK EV sales declined, but by next year they may be accused of having been merely prescient. It seems that the majority of people who wanted to buy a BEV have bought one and there is not more growth left in the market. 2025 will likely see the BEV figures struggle to get above the 19.6% of total sales they achieved in 2024. Perhaps they will even fall slightly. It now seems that the UK government will waive the £704 million in fines that the car makers are liable to for failing to achieve the 22% mandate. If this happens again next year the mandate will lose credibility and de facto become merely an aspiration.
The numbers emerging today are hugely boosted by dealer & manufacturers pre- registering cars that are being stock-piled & then slowly being fed into the used car market with tiny mileages but huge discounts .Some of these cars have been on dealer inventories for a year and not sold. The current buyers are fleet buyers & leasing companies eager to take advantage of tax breaks & purchase incentives that private buyers do not get.Private buyer subsidies have ended in the UK as are shortly the running tax breaks thus far enjoyed by BEVs You should not comment on the UK car market from what you read in Australia. We may soon be looking at artificial price hikes on ICE vehicles & also artificial stock shortages of ICE vehicles to push private buyers into purchasing or leasing BEVs they do not want but they need a new card & as the glut of BEVs into the "used car" market place depresses prices of used ICE vehicles with inevitable higher mileages of genuinely used ICE vehicles.
There is a massive hold back for ev cars here in uk dew too charging points for 1 theres nowhere near enough 2 the prices uk are ripping us off tesla chargers charge 40p per kwh yet the other chargers are charging 89p kWh which is making the cost more expensive then petrol ..the goverment needs to act because at home charge it's only 10p kWh but no where near everyone can charge at home .its typical uk overcharging just like everything else. I'm in Australia and it's the same. A noticeable increase in just this last year. There are many Tesla's but also a big increase in BYD models. With all the new brands coming this year to Australia at least, people mightn't realise the actual increase as they mightn't recognise them as an ev. Tesla's certainly stand out more.

I work in the UK car industry, selling EVs. The market is very very difficult, despite what any figures say. The UK population is NOT buying EVs easily. All EVs are sold on lease terms and the leasing companies have been taking heavy losses from terrible EV residuals. These are facts. The main problem is the government’s ZEV mandate which forces EV sales above demand without any real incentives for the private buyer. So residual values collapse. All manufacturers are having to support EV sales with huge discounts which are not sustainable. This is because of the ZEV mandate. 20% is easy to do? No, it isn’t. Any approach that forces supply instead of incentivises demand will not be very effective. The UK’s issue is not media. Media has been way behind what is really happening at every step of the way. The issue is that it is far more expensive to own an EV than a petrol car because of terrible residuals. This arises because sales are being forced above demand without any thought as to incentivising the used market. The brick wall is coming quickly into view.

At the start of a paradigm shift the new units are expensive and not high quality and lose value quickly.
We are at the point where people will only buy the early issue units at a very heavy discount because the new far superior units are dropping in price quickly. This creates a

Leasing EVs is the standard due to pace of change of the technology. I would not dream owning my own EV at the moment. Changes to tech mean that it would be ‘obsolete’ in 3-4 years. I am about to go to my 3rd EV and every one has been better than the last one by miles.
In general people don't realise the residual value until they try to change their cars. It's obvious how low prices are to buy a three year old EV. There's little UK car industry left and that's foreign owned.

It's not a lie. Consumers aren't buying EVs. Fleet sales, businesses wanting some climate credits, are driving the numbers. The fleet sales are driven by government mandates and are not natural.

EVs are as yet not a practical's solution for the UK and if you don’t believe me ask someone who lives in a flat and owns one and is trying to sell it. VW and BMW are building their cars in China. I saw a stat yesterday that says 80% of electric vehicles originate from China so how does a drop in sales affect the UK economy? Half million folk out fitting charging stations? We have an EV through the government disability scheme which makes it only tolerable. Generally we run a power lead from the house across the pavement and charge the car that way if we’re lucky enough to get parking close enough to do so. After our shopping the other day we left the car on charge at the pod and spent £8 in the cafe while we waited for a top up of 4/5% and that charge only covered what was used in the 5-10 minutes we used letting the car defrost before we went shopping and when people ask me about the joys of EV motoring I tell the truth. We won’t be getting another one they are an absolute joke.

The grid has huge over supply, what do you think the oil refineries use to frack crude into whatever else it becomes? You think this happens by magic? As refineries close, capacity increases. It's not only the time mag, all médias have changed their discourse about EVs. They clearly want to influence negatively the potential buyers, listing all the reasons why EV are expensive and unpractical. But some years ago the same media were venting EVs for their lower climate impact.
Here in the UK 1 in 10 cars sold to private buyer's is an EV. 40% of cars have no off road parking, 7pence per kW only possible with cheap home night rate charging. The 20% overall sold as EV were due to fleet buyers taking advantage of tax breaks. In the UK there is thousands of unsold EV's with less than 500 miles and 2 or 3 owners.
In the UK The Times and The Telegraph actively mis inform on EVs

As a sales agent who often covers over 300 miles a day, electric cars just aren’t viable for me yet. I’ve driven the Tesla Long Range AWD several times. While it claims a 389-mile range, in winter it realistically delivers only around 280 miles. The process of stopping to charge is simply impractical when factoring in the time to locate a charger, plug in, wait, unplug, and get back on the road.
In the UK, we now have the Tesla Model 3 Single Motor Long Range, but even that falls short for my needs. Ideally, you should only charge the battery to 85% or 90% to mitigate wear, which further reduces usable range.
I'm waiting for electric cars to consistently deliver a real-world range of 350 miles from a 90% charge before considering a purchase. However, my budget is capped at approximately £35,000, which means I might be waiting a bit longer. Hopefully, within the next 18 months, technological advancements like semi-solid state batteries will change all that. We aren’t there yet, but I remain optimistic about the near future.
That’s totally understandable - EV’s aren’t yet suited for that high and time-pressured mileage. Sympathies if you do that, sounds like over 1,000 miles a week!
Eventually EV’s will cover this, but you’ve got until 2035 for Hybrids so there should be time. I would have thought for you, the more critical thing would be infrastructure and charging speed as you wouldn’t want to sit for 30 to 45 minutes to charge.
You can't be doing much productive work if you are covering 300 miles per day..... Why do you need to "locate" a charger when Tesla's satnav shows you where they are? I don't get why charging is such an issue, with Tesla Superchargers being capable of adding 75 miles of range for every 5 minutes the car is hooked up to the charger. A 15 minute stop would give you 200+ miles of range. Are you saying you can't/won't stop for 15 minutes during a 300 mile drive?

It's not lithium metal, but lithium salts. So imagine steel compared to rust dissolved in acid as an analogy. Makes it much more difficult to extract.
Metal you can melt like wax, but the salts require a complex chemical process to extract them. And the processing to extract and separate the salts usually involves some nasty toxic intermediate chemistry.

A lot to unpick here. Firstly I would point out that charging infrastructure companies are certainly not going to make major long term investment plans based on newspaper articles. The claim that this will undermine strategy is ridiculous. Companies do their own research and are perfectly able to read the data and would go to primary sources, not rely on newspaper articles. The other thing I would point out is that it is simply not true to imply that European car makers were against government EV mandates. They have, for years, worked with both the UK government and the EU commission to formulate these plans, and have supported them strongly. The car makers truly did believe the hype about EV cars taking over the world and saw regulations in a favorable light. Ie, they can benefit from these mandates - and subsidies - to sell more EVs. Only now are they beginning to see the problems. I guess they didn't foresee China taking over. Finally, in my view, the banner to the video is overstating a point. True, the article was wrong to suggest that UK EV sales declined, but by next year they may be accused of having been merely prescient. It seems that the majority of people who wanted to buy a BEV have bought one and there is not more growth left in the market. 2025 will likely see the BEV figures struggle to get above the 19.6% of total sales they achieved in 2024. Perhaps they will even fall slightly. It now seems that the UK government will waive the £704 million in fines that the car makers are liable to for failing to achieve the 22% mandate. If this happens again next year the mandate will lose credibility and de facto become merely an aspiration.
The numbers emerging today are hugely boosted by dealer & manufacturers pre- registering cars that are being stock-piled & then slowly being fed into the used car market with tiny mileages but huge discounts .Some of these cars have been on dealer inventories for a year and not sold. The current buyers are fleet buyers & leasing companies eager to take advantage of tax breaks & purchase incentives that private buyers do not get.Private buyer subsidies have ended in the UK as are shortly the running tax breaks thus far enjoyed by BEVs You should not comment on the UK car market from what you read in Australia.
We may soon be looking at artificial price hikes on ICE vehicles & also artificial stock shortages of ICE vehicles to push private buyers into purchasing or leasing BEVs they do not want but they need a new card & as the glut of BEVs into the "used car" market place depresses prices of used ICE vehicles with inevitable higher mileages of genuinely used ICE vehicles.
There is a massive hold back for ev cars here in uk dew too charging points for 1 theres nowhere near enough 2 the prices uk are ripping us off tesla chargers charge 40p per kwh yet the other chargers are charging 89p kWh which is making the cost more expensive then petrol ..the goverment needs to act because at home charge it's only 10p kWh but no where near everyone can charge at home .its typical uk overcharging just like everything else. I hate it here am looking at moving as had enough of everything here
In short, retailers are overcharging.
The Labour government here in the UK have already wrecked our economy, investors are pulling out in droves. We have MASSIVE and increasing energy costs, so won't be making anything for some time, doesn't matter what the media are reporting 😞

When the infrastructure and five minute recharges are readily available for the working stiff they'll sell like hotcakes. Add inexpensive electricity rates too.
" Newspaper of record". Means you can use their articles in a court of law and a judge will accept it. This is a huge thing to lose. For instance, every other media company could report EV sales dropping , simply by quoting the Times article and they would not be sued .

Is that demand from fleet buyers? or single car owners? or two car household early EV adopters? And is this demand the result of an 'even playing field'? or is caused by the manipulation of the free market through subsidies and taxes imposed by a Government pushing ever harder for EV take up?
The negatives of EVs are still too great to persuade the majority of private, single car owners that this a practical improvement on what they have already, unless they are doing daily short commuter journeys and can charge at home. Let's have a totally free market and free choice without any 'carrots or sticks' - then we'll see what EV demand is REALLY like.

Like normal the Viking presents an exaggerated story in order to make a point that is better off made without the exaggeration. There was no 'conviction'. This matter never went anywhere near a court.

The Times newspaper has been made to issue a correction regarding its reporting on electric vehicle (EV) sales, following a rare successful complaint to the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) by an anti-misinformation group.
The belated ruling last Thursday came after the the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) challenged claims made in an article by Political Editor Steven Swinford in September about a supposed “fall in demand” for electric vehicles. The claim was contradicted by market data showing EV sales are actually rising.
Sam apparently doesn't know that individuals can't be convicted of lying. A law only gets broken when a deliberate deception is used in defamatory or slanderous conduct or in libelous statements that have the effect of damaging an individual's reputation.
Lying under oath otherwise known as perjury, however, is unlawful and can attract serious penalties. Also, different forms of formal or informal business communications can be viewed as unlawful but shooting your mouth off and puffery don't constitute crimes. Lying directly to shareholders or furthering a scheme to pump and dump shares will typically be viewed as crimes but outlining plans that don't come to fruition or using employing one-sided or ambiguous statements to realise unstated ends usually don't violate any laws.
Just stop this absurd crusade Sam. The best that can be done if explicit falsehoods are stated in the media is gaining a retraction unless you intend to take the writer of the article to court.
Likewise with statements that come out of CEOs mouths. Unless shareholders are being deliberately deceived or frauds are being effected by verbal means the Press and CEOs, when speaking in public on business matters, can say what the hell they want.

Take into account it's car registration and not car sales. Even so EV sales didn't meet the desired sales to avoid enormous fines.
