He is just an idealist who is not very sharp and really shouldn't be interviewing politicians, he is way out of his depth. I expect if he does interview Putin he will attempt to come at it from the pro-Ukrainian side, ie he is trying to be more of the 'hardball interviewer' but it's really not his style. He built his podcasts interviewing scientists and researchers, not politicians. And for reference his family history is Ukrainian.

Lex gave Zelenskyy a valuable platform, plenty of room to speak, plus presented many of the talking points shared by Ukraine-ignorant people, allowing Zelenskyy to push back strongly. At minute 14 Jonathan catches a subtle nuance that I missed after the first two viewings of the interview. When Lex invites Zelenskiy to a Texas barbecue with his buddy Joe Rogan and Putin (who is another right-leaning, MAGA appologist) to get together for a visit and find common ground; Z* answers "who will pay?". The inference subtle as it is that both Lex and Rogan might be in the direct or indirect pay of Putin. Very sharp witted of both Zelenskiy and Jonathan. I'm sure that there will be other high notes, but this one is choice.

I think Lex would have benefited from going into the interview with the aim of being really privileged in getting President Zelenskyy’s attention for so many hours, instead of Lex saying himself that he has always wanted to be a part of the path to peace! For a Russian speaker to say that Ukraine language is important “symbolically” is equivalent to an Englishman saying that the German language is important “symbolically”. I’d love to see Lex interview Olaf Scholz and insist that Scholz speak English-after all, German is apparently important only 'symbolically’.

This interview just proved everything I suspected about Lex Fridman from the second I saw his channel. He’s very naive, trapped in an extreme conservative/populist bubble that clouds his judgement, and worst of all he just spreads Russian propaganda and conspiracy theories without even knowing it which is undermining the security of Ukraine 🇺🇦 and democracy in general.
I think Fridman asked questions which his audience on X platform would ask, as they are under Russian propaganda influence and he knows it. That does not mean this is necessarilly his own opinion. By doing so, he gave Zelenskyj a space to react to Russian narrative directly. Because no normal journalist would come up with such absurd questons.
Also: It does not really mean that this interview was bad for Zelenskyy or Ukraine. I found it very revealing in regard to both Fridman's lack of quality as well as the weird preconceptions entertained by especially the American audience. After Trump's and Musk's rhetorics lately, it seems it would be prudent for the EU to assume that we are pretty much on our own from here on forward. Time to take our security and economic interests in Europe more serious than before and to stop compromising on the support for Ukraine with dishonest political actors riding the waves of fake outrage on US dominated social media.

I'm not a partisan I like Trumps domestic program and support it. I thought Obama, Biden and the Dems should have been way tougher on Russia and failed drastically in supporting Ukraine properly. Stephen Kotkin's interview remains introductory and falls short of being sufficient. It is still heavily influenced by elements of 18th-century Russian propaganda, with Kotkin continuing to conflate Kievan Rus and Russia-a distinction Timothy Snyder could have clarified for him. That said, the interview had one redeeming quality: Lex sat through the entire discussion like an attentive schoolboy, allowing Kotkin to deliver a thorough lecture.

Lex Fridman is an extremely intelligent person who, as Gad Saad rightly pointed out, is characterized by special characteristics that have already been well analyzed by some. Fridman is all about 'All you need is love'. Anyone who contradicts is immediately blocked. Up to five times, Fridman interrupts Zelenslyy with his 'dream' (think of the 'dream party of Georgia'). Apparently we all have to believe in fairy tales. Zelenskyy has presented his country, Ukraine, excellently. I hope that especially more Americans will support Ukraine! I followed Fridman at the start, but I didn't like some of his views and some of his guests. There are 24 hours in a day. Better things to do. He's in love with some image of Russia (Plato). He doesn't understand history (Snyder).

Part of Russian propaganda includes criticisms like yours that pigeonhole and polarize figures like Lex into neat little camps. As a Russian speaker born in CCCP, I can taste the runaway idealism and social pressures that are causing Lex to behave this way (at best).
Lex was actively involved in academia researching AI as a Computer scientist. He studied Linguistics and Psychology as part of his Computer Science studies. I am convinced he is highly intelligent and intentional. He understands the structure of language. I found it interesting that Lex played down his "Ukrainian heritage" with Zelensky. In previous interviews with others Lex has strongly stated that he and his family were from Ukraine. However, to Zelensky he claimed his heritage was "parts of Russia, parts of Ukraine - but in the soviet era". He was a lot less emphatic on the Ukrainian part of his heritage. Has anyone verified this claim to Ukrainian heritage? He has a Soviet background no doubt, but Ukrainian? Maybe a distant great auntie. I wonder if he were nervous of being called out for the claim to Ukrainian heritage or tested on it by someone in the know - like Zelensky. As someone who used to sub to Lex I see him do this all the time. Pitch himself as sympathetic and neutral. Claim an idealistic adherence to peace and compromise and then push a clear agenda that is neither neutral or idealistic. We make a mistake if we view Lex as innocent, naïve, or stupid. He is none of these things. He uses them as a shield from criticism. The naivety is often directed - in this case, naïve about Putin, sceptical about Zelensky. It's weaponised and directed to an agenda. Before applauding Lex for giving Zelensky a platform, lets see what he makes of Putin. I'll bet money he softballs Putin way more. My money goes on Lex using the interview with Putin to humanise him, show him as funny, nice, likes animals, is misunderstood. @@mvjh2277 maybe I heard it wrong but even on this Lex seemed to have it backwards, as the Holodomor happening to Russians rather than Ukrainians specifically. Zelensky seemed to correct him on this. At any rate, I think there's holes in Lex's account (from other interviews as well) and I wonder if it's ever been verified. Even if he has Ukrainian heritage he views it through a Soviet lens.

No. It depends how well he knows the topics. His questions around AI were often very good but even his questions about computer programming more generally were often cringe. Я читала комментарии и многие писали, что Лекс или глуп, или наивен, или агент Кремля. Я наблюдала манеру говорить и способ подачи информации агентов Кремля, на Лекса это не похоже. Агенты так подают вкрадчиво и постепенно информацию, что их трудно в этом заподозрить. Только внимательные люди могут это заметить. Fridman, by asking questions in a way that may sound as propaganda to some ears, gives Zelensky a chance to counter the propaganda directly, instead of doing it in a circumspect way. This may be the most effective anti-propaganda approach.
Engaging directly with propaganda under the guise of 'giving a chance to counter it' is dangerously naive. It's a tactic that trolls in Russian channels mockingly celebrate, knowing full well that controversy fuels further spread of misinformation, especially in today's attention economy fueled by controversy and engagement. These are positioned as calculated moves to infiltrate and influence perceptions of Lex audience, which include tech and science decision makers.

Having watched Lex interview Musk, Trump, Fiona Hill, and others, I say I enjoy his rapport, outlook. Now here is the rub, his audience are brought in on many levels of any of the many subjects, on a basic level and taken to a form of understanding and learning. Leaving on a better understanding , though the geek stuff is way over my head. The "Men In Black" style from America suits me fine, and the President of Ukraine came out showing empathy for the people, greater than any Leader I can think of.

This was the most fascinating analysis of the Zelensky - Friedman 'conversation'. I didn't find Friedman's style... to be particularly competent as a journalist/interviewer. Zelensky accquitted himself quite well in the circumstances. I admire Zelensky's diplomacy, patience, and intelligence when dealing with Friedman.
It'll be interesting to compare this interview to the one he allegedly will do with Putin. That will show what way he's leaning. I doubt he has the balls to ask Putin too uncomfortable questions, though.

Thank you. Typically I’m typically interested in some of Lex‘s topics. I always found his nerdy Data tech guy sort of endearing. Not being said during this episode, it was clear to see that he has an almost infantile view of conflict and human suffering. Thankfully, he had the president on, and Zelinski managed to hold it together. I haven’t been able to return to my apartment in Butcha in a few years now. Trust me when I tell you I’m not worried about my property values after my place was surrounded by war crime burial sites or even that my neighboring building was hit with a missile. Sure I’m sure he was using some of these to get an interview with Putin so I won’t speak to negatively about him. However, let me speak for my friends and family on the line of contact how have been fighting since 2014. Obama failed when he did nothing in the invasion of 2014 and the massacre in Illivisk. Trump absolutely failed miserably by trying to extort the president for personal gain. That’s impeachment number one by the way for any non-Americans. And now Joe Biden has failed once again by slow walking this aid with politically driven fears in mind. Your piece nails it in no uncertain terms, and you bring to the fore the urgency of this situation in the way you point out Lex’s tone-deafness and self-serving way he approached this interview. The questions were an insult to Zekensky and all Ukrainians who are in the heat of battle. Is Lex an asset? I think he is, unwittingly. He has opened himself to those among his supporters who might steer his projects through opinion and comments on his channel and many are increasingly MAGA and pro-Russia. I don’t think he is sophisticated enough to leverage his platform in the direction of democratic support. He thinks he’s unbiased, but he clearly shows the attitude supported by very old-fashioned Soviet ideals. This is not 1917, 1932, or even 1968. This is now, and now is a whole other situation regarding global politics.
Fridman and his parents are prime examples of saying : "You can take a person out of the village, but you can't take a village out of the person"

He is just an idealist who is not very sharp and really shouldn't be interviewing politicians, he is way out of his depth. I expect if he does interview Putin he will attempt to come at it from the pro-Ukrainian side, ie he is trying to be more of the 'hardball interviewer' but it's really not his style. He built his podcasts interviewing scientists and researchers, not politicians. And for reference his family history is Ukrainian.

At minute 14 Jonathan catches a subtle nuance that I missed after the first two viewings of the interview. When Lex invites Zelenskiy to a Texas barbecue with his buddy Joe Rogan and Putin (who is another right-leaning, MAGA appologist) to get together for a visit and find common ground; Z* answers "who will pay?". The inference subtle as it is that both Lex and Rogan might be in the direct or indirect pay of Putin. Very sharp witted of both Zelenskiy and Jonathan. I'm sure that there will be other high notes, but this one is choice.

An interview with an intellectual person rarely has anything to do with politics in a direct sense, but can of course come to have a political impact IF, for example, an individual comes up with groundbreaking new evidence-based & scientifically proven theories about, for example, our environment, or other types that are initially not politically motivated but become so after years of research and study.
Thank you for reminding me of this important difference in the way different interviews are conducted and for what aim the interview has to begin with!

I think Fridman asked questions which his audience on X platform would ask, as they are under Russian propaganda influence and he knows it. That does not mean this is necessarilly his own opinion. By doing so, he gave Zelenskyj a space to react to Russian narrative directly. Because no normal journalist would come up with such absurd questons.

Also: It does not really mean that this interview was bad for Zelenskyy or Ukraine. I found it very revealing in regard to both Fridman's lack of quality as well as the weird preconceptions entertained by especially the American audience. After Trump's and Musk's rhetorics lately, it seems it would be prudent for the EU to assume that we are pretty much on our own from here on forward. Time to take our security and economic interests in Europe more serious than before and to stop compromising on the support for Ukraine with dishonest political actors riding the waves of fake outrage on US dominated social media.

I'm not a partisan I like Trumps domestic program and support it. I thought Obama, Biden and the Dems should have been way tougher on Russia and failed drastically in supporting Ukraine properly. Trump needs to stand up big time against Putin and I'm confident that will be the way it goes despite his rhetoric and the 50 percent of the MAGA right who are indifferent to Putin and Russia.

Lex Fridman is an extremely intelligent person who, as Gad Saad rightly pointed out, is characterized by special characteristics that have already been well analyzed by some. Fridman is all about 'All you need is love'. Anyone who contradicts is immediately blocked. Up to five times, Fridman interrupts Zelenslyy with his 'dream' (think of the 'dream party of Georgia'). Apparently we all have to believe in fairy tales. Zelenskyy has presented his country, Ukraine, excellently. I hope that especially more Americans will support Ukraine!
I followed Fridman at the start, but I didn't like some of his views and some of his guests. There are 24 hours in a day. Better things to do. He's in love with some image of Russia (Plato). He doesn't understand history (Snyder).

Lex was actively involved in academia researching AI as a Computer scientist. He studied Linguistics and Psychology as part of his Computer Science studies. I am convinced he is highly intelligent and intentional. He understands the structure of language.
I found it interesting that Lex played down his "Ukrainian heritage" with Zelensky. In previous interviews with others Lex has strongly stated that he and his family were from Ukraine. However, to Zelensky he claimed his heritage was "parts of Russia, parts of Ukraine - but in the soviet era". He was a lot less emphatic on the Ukrainian part of his heritage. Has anyone verified this claim to Ukrainian heritage? He has a Soviet background no doubt, but Ukrainian? Maybe a distant great auntie.
I wonder if he were nervous of being called out for the claim to Ukrainian heritage or tested on it by someone in the know - like Zelensky.
As someone who used to sub to Lex I see him do this all the time. Pitch himself as sympathetic and neutral. Claim an idealistic adherence to peace and compromise and then push a clear agenda that is neither neutral or idealistic.
We make a mistake if we view Lex as innocent, naïve, or stupid. He is none of these things. He uses them as a shield from criticism. The naivety is often directed - in this case, naïve about Putin, sceptical about Zelensky. It's weaponised and directed to an agenda.
Before applauding Lex for giving Zelensky a platform, lets see what he makes of Putin. I'll bet money he softballs Putin way more. My money goes on Lex using the interview with Putin to humanise him, show him as funny, nice, likes animals, is misunderstood.

Lex Fridman is not extremely intelligent. He took Zelensky’s question “Who’s going to pay for the BBQ” literally. Fridman paused for a second and said he would pay. I was in tears.
Lex typically asks smart inquisitive questions in the interviews I've seen.. But this one was like he completely dumbed himself down to the level of a generic podcaster, this can't be a coincidence or simply him being nervous, something is definitely at play here

No. It depends how well he knows the topics. His questions around AI were often very good but even his questions about computer programming more generally were often cringe. Отвечала нет, они ,,консервы Кремля" ,что там слушать. Есть ещё выражение, как полезный идиот. После интервью Путина у Фридмана будет больше понятно. Извините, английским не владею, жалею. Fridman, by asking questions in a way that may sound as propaganda to some ears, gives Zelensky a chance to counter the propaganda directly, instead of doing it in a circumspect way. This may be the most effective anti-propaganda approach.

Engaging directly with propaganda under the guise of 'giving a chance to counter it' is dangerously naive. It's a tactic that trolls in Russian channels mockingly celebrate, knowing full well that controversy fuels further spread of misinformation, especially in today's attention economy fueled by controversy and engagement. These are positioned as calculated moves to infiltrate and influence perceptions of Lex audience, which include tech and science decision makers.
That's like saying that using propaganda is only in order to give people the chance to respond to it. Also known as either stupid or intentionally deceptive.

Having watched Lex interview Musk, Trump, Fiona Hill, and others, I say I enjoy his rapport, outlook.
Now here is the rub, his audience are brought in on many levels of any of the many subjects, on a basic level and taken to a form of understanding and learning. Leaving on a better understanding , though the geek stuff is way over my head.
The "Men In Black" style from America suits me fine, and the President of Ukraine came out showing empathy for the people, greater than any Leader I can think of.
Lex’s reputation is finally getting a long-overdue comeuppance.

Jonathan that was a beautiful introduction clarifying the naive if not downright Putin slanted bias of Lex Friedman.
This was the most fascinating analysis of the Zelensky - Friedman 'conversation'. I didn't find Friedman's style... to be particularly competent as a journalist/interviewer. Zelensky accquitted himself quite well in the circumstances. I admire Zelensky's diplomacy, patience, and intelligence when dealing with Friedman.
It'll be interesting to compare this interview to the one he allegedly will do with Putin. That will show what way he's leaning. I doubt he has the balls to ask Putin too uncomfortable questions, though.
Probably is like most of us in preferring to keep whatever he has, would be another way of putting it.

Thank you. Typically I’m typically interested in some of Lex‘s topics. I always found his nerdy Data tech guy sort of endearing. Not being said during this episode, it was clear to see that he has an almost infantile view of conflict and human suffering. Thankfully, he had the president on, and Zelinski managed to hold it together. I haven’t been able to return to my apartment in Butcha in a few years now. Trust me when I tell you I’m not worried about my property values after my place was surrounded by war crime burial sites or even that my neighboring building was hit with a missile. Sure I’m sure he was using some of these to get an interview with Putin so I won’t speak to negatively about him. However, let me speak for my friends and family on the line of contact how have been fighting since 2014. Obama failed when he did nothing in the invasion of 2014 and the massacre in Illivisk. Trump absolutely failed miserably by trying to extort the president for personal gain. That’s impeachment number one by the way for any non-Americans. And now Joe Biden has failed once again by slow walking this aid with politically driven fears in mind. As someone who just refuses to talk about the guy coming in there is one benefit to having such a wittless bafoon in office that may actually benefit the guys on the ground because he’s absolutely impossible to read or predict. We’ve known exactly who our enemy is and the evil that they represent for years now. My wife’s hometown in Crimea has been occupied by monsters for many years now. Hopefully the absolute chaos set for my home country in the states manages to benefit Ukraine in someway. Americans, ignorance and foolishness is what half the country voted for and certainly what they deserve. Hopefully this is the year we see the monsters regime in the Ruzz fall this year, and the brave people of Georgia Ukrane and various other oppressed minorities in the Federation of evil, stand up and retake their freedom from oppression and slavery at the hands of an inhuman Horde. This is the moment when lines should be and should have been drawn when the war began. Gone are the days of being able to leisurely hair- split this or that political stance, or play armchair quarterback with hundreds of thousands of innocent lives. Your piece nails it in no uncertain terms, and you bring to the fore the urgency of this situation in the way you point out Lex’s tone-deafness and self-serving way he approached this interview. The questions were an insult to Zekensky and all Ukrainians who are in the heat of battle.
Is Lex an asset? I think he is, unwittingly. He has opened himself to those among his supporters who might steer his projects through opinion and comments on his channel and many are increasingly MAGA and pro-Russia. I don’t think he is sophisticated enough to leverage his platform in the direction of democratic support. He thinks he’s unbiased, but he clearly shows the attitude supported by very old-fashioned Soviet ideals. This is not 1917, 1932, or even 1968. This is now, and now is a whole other situation regarding global politics.
