The guy is a legend. I am following his posts and I've been pleasantly surprised by his understanding of the whole situation and the sense of what's right and what's timely even though I know how amazing Lithuanians are. I wish there were more politicians like Gabrielius in the European Union.

Landsbergis was supposed to become the member of European Commission from Lithuania, but our president and parliament blocked it. Things are not as rosy as they seem, unfortunately. We are very likely to be getting less and less of politicians like him in Europe, and more pro-russian, anti-democratic, post-truth populists. Way more.

As a Lithuanian I feel very torn about this acknowledgement. The reason is that this man is last or close to that in the public confidence rankings as of November 2024, which means that Lithuania hates him. Our president Nausėda despises this man and our parliamentary elections campaign was pretty much about who's gonna criticise the party this man led more, that's it. The ones who denegrated this man and his colleagues the most, won big.
I personally find him the best politician of the past parliamentary cycle and the party he led, despite me having many disagreement with them, did a brilliant job, all things considered. But thing is, Lithuania, despite our insane democratic and economic progress since the nineties, is full of ressentiment, even among young people, and Landsbergis and people like him, the party he led are the scapegoats. Furthermore, we are highly susceptible to post-truth populism. Democracy is fracturing all over the Western world due to the same reason. Situation in Lithuania is not as bad as in some other democratic (or formerly democratic - like Hungary) Western states, but it's pretty bad, to be frank.

yes! U know what: these holiday days/week till jan 6th or so are a perfect time to write/call our elected rep's!!!!!!!!!!!! Ukr needs the a massive help so they can push any strategic plans they may have to make headway , e.g. in the south, which is proably their only potentially advantageous spot at this point. Of course ideally a coalition of the willing would provide a LOT of air power to make it all happen! If we did, there's NOTHING Ru could do about it. nothing! (and they'd never use a Nuke bcuz of it even tho they'd lose a lot of equipment and perhaps men, bcuz they're not suicidal AT ALL, and they're very accustomed to losing a lot of stuff/men, as they have in every single war since their really bad results in all wars since mid 1800's at least. (btw my ideas dn't come from nowhere: i've studied a lot of history and other factors of international politics/affairs, including from really bright minded professionals both in academia at the highest caliber institutions, and org's like the UNDP, e.g.

He managed to do more in seven months than a lot of politicians do in their entire careers. I saw him on a small military channel, he could easily have said "I'm busy and this channel only has a couple thousand followers." If Russia ends up unraveling (quite possible), it doesn't necessarily mean that the nuclear weapons will be distributed among 20 or so different new entities. These weapons are located in only a couple of places, under strict surveillance. Most likely just one or two heirs of Russia will hold on to them. Another scenario is that the Ukrainian army can enter Russia and seize them.

Jonathan, yeah i agree that PooTin's confidence is unnerving, BUT keep in mind how the psychopath's mind works, and how the more-eastern mind's pride works, i.e saving face. It's like an actor. This is also seen in men like Soloyov (tv guy) who flipped from being very normal/reasonable to a psychopath within a few years. The artificial nature of some russian personalities is absolutely breath-taking. So i would not be too bothered at this point by PooTin's confidence. It doesn't really mean he's confident in the sense that we think of it.

Some people are still living in the past world empire. They need to mature. In the multipolar world, strength comes from trade and commodities.
This is why the old empire is dying in the face of China+Russia.

China, Russia and a growing number of fellow BRICS countries represent a newly emerging multipolar world order that already has greater GDP/PPP than the G7 countries combined; consequently future U.S. administrations will need to accept that any U.S. aspiration of global economic and military pre-eminence is no longer achievable. Moreover, the only way that America can now mitigate it's diminishing international influence, is by accepting and participating in the emerging multipolar world order; preferably as a leading nation state among equals.

    • @Anthonythumb

What can NATO do to make the social contract of those countries which are lagging behind agree to 5% spent on defence? Why not layer the defence your percentage covers, eg 1% will provide a lot less support in terms of weapons and equipment than 2%, 3% and so on, and only the full agreed percentage goal will provide troops etc. Isn’t that how insurance cover operates?

As a Ukrainian, I say no. For centuries they've been creating this myth of “underdeveloped, helpless little Russians” to keep us in check, but they've long since become victims of their own product and have ultimately unlearned to take us seriously. That's where “Kyiv in 3 days” stems from.
But this policy of theirs pertains not only to Ukrainians. They think this derogatorily of every people they ever conquered. Including those still in Russia. Example: they tend to make fun of Chukchi people because they've long forgotten how they couldn't conquer these fierce warriors for 150 years.
