    FAQ question: How important would you say the pickups are in a guitar when you're working with high-gain metal tones in a home recording setup with a DI box? I get a lot of flubby, sludgy low end and I've seen a lot of people say that better pickups can help especially for 7 strings like mine, but I always kinda thought pickups were towards the bottom of the recording quality food chain. What are your thoughts?

    • @ThankfulHeart10
      @ThankfulHeart10 3 года назад

      Uh beats me but maybe a solar guitar marshall dsl 20 and a dd8 boss delay pedal.

    • @aidenmcclendon5457
      @aidenmcclendon5457 3 года назад +1

      Pickups are a life changer. Going from a bass heavy pickup to something with little bass and heavy mids will change a ton of your sound but mainly the feel and how it interacts with the low end. I had a lundgren m6 in the bridge in my 6 string tuned to D standard or drop C and put a black winter in and it is so much tighter, not that an m6 isn't tight but still. Pickups matter

    • @RX120D
      @RX120D 3 года назад +1

      Pickups are important for tweaking very specific qualities of your tone. For a problem like you describe, too much low end causing a lack of definition and a flubby sound, put an EQ between your guitar and the amp/sim; set a highpass filter between 170-220hz (tweak to taste) with a sharp enough Q so that the low end is cut aggressively. This should clean up the boomies.
      Other things to consider is ensuring your pre-amp gain settings aren't too high, your bass knob in the pre-amp isn't too high and, most importantly IMO, your Master Volume isn't set too high. Having your master volume set high only introduces more saturation once your signal hits the power amp. This can manifest as boominess and over saturated low-end which makes everything sound muddy. Most modern metal tones have their master volume settings quite low; between 2 and 4 out of 10. You want to have the MV just high enough to coax some of the goodness out of the power amp, but not so much that it oversaturates your tone.

    • @Mini1124
      @Mini1124 3 года назад +2

      Pickups and Amp is the most important part of any tone. In a DI box that means pickups are still just as important, as is the plug-in you’re using or whatever you’re reamping to. So yes, pickups matter, A LOT.

    • @kylegrossi8175
      @kylegrossi8175 3 года назад +2

      Personally, I put a lot of stock into pickups. Typically low end can be tamed on a real amp with a OD pedal in front but sometimes when i record direct into my DAW i feel the OD pedal inside the plugin isn't as effective as a real amp etc.
      My suggestion would be to experiment with different pickups and every time you swap them out record something in your DAW to keep track of which pickup does what to your tone. my second suggestion would be to experiment with different picks and shore up your picking. I spent a lot of time on my picking this year and it makes all the difference.
      What tuning are you playing in with your 7?

    FAQ: Hi Ola and greetings from Fazer-land! I hadn't discovered your channel until very recently when I found the joys of playing guitar again after the pause of several years, so I'm sorry if you have already answered this (I haven't had the time to go thru all the FAQs, YET). By the way, I have found your videos in particular very helpful (especially the pedal related ones) and inspiring, even if modern metal isn't something I listen to that much (old school is more of my thing, no hate involved or anything). But you know, you can draw inspiration from many, even not that obvious sources.
    THE QUESTION: As of now, do you have time and energy to actively seek out new music, or do you just focus on something you encounter from the news and some suggestions people throw at your direction? As a father of two and having a job I know that can be difficult at times, but you know, I'd like to keep my mind open.

    Tempo of the damned is a solid pick, but for 2004 I think I would have to go with Mastodon's Leviathan. A close runner-up would be Necrophagist's Epitaph, or Suffocation's comeback album Souls to Deny. And as much as I love 10,000 days, I've always liked Lateralus more. It's very difficult for me to pick between Lateralus or Blackwater Park for 2001, but I've gotta give it to Tool because that's my favorite album from them, and I like the 90's Opeth albums a little better than blackwater. For 2006 I would have to go with Ahab's Call of the Wretched sea, one of the most brutally heavy albums I've ever heard. When you put that album on it instantly hooks you in and never lets go. I was thinking about From Mars To Sirius for 2005, but that spot is forever reserved for Meshuggah's Catch 33

    Also, I totally agree with the nod to Radiohead's "In Rainbows". I remember being so psyched watching the live stream of the entire album live from their jam room the night it released. It was a self-released album and you could pay whatever you wanted for the download...I paid $12 ( the avg. price of a CD at the time). The average price paid was like $6 per download, even though more people downloaded it for free than paid. I think the band made over 3 Million Dollars that day...what Legends!

    • @alastairr_6640
      @alastairr_6640 3 года назад +3

      I would say get an epiphone sg or les paul. Epiphone guitars are comfortable to play, durable and sound very good for rock and metal (because of the humbucker pickups). They are quite expensive brand new (£400-600) but a second hand one would only cost about £300-£350. For an amp I would recommend a blackstar id core (there are 3 versions but it doesnt really matter which one you get). This amp has has a range of great tones and effects and they are only about £90-£110.

      That depends on the genres you wanna play and the body shape you like ,but for versatility, try and get yourself a Guitar with a HSS pickup setup ,best of both worlds!Maybe from Ibanez or Fender or any other good brand .For an amp you can get a Boss Katana,but a smaller one perhaps due to the cost ,or maybe even the Positive Grid amp,although I can't remember the price ,it shouldn't be too expensive right??
      Maybe invest in an audio interface ,some plugins on your computer and headphones or monitors but that can get complicated.
      The best thing you can do is go to a guitar store and try out different guitars and amps and see what you like. Good Luck!

      Michael Kelley has some very nice, cheaper guitars if you picked up a used amp to stay in your budget. Probably the cheapest though is an Epiphone Special (about $160) and the Squire HH Mustang ($170)... followed by Ibanez.
      Also, if you end up loving the guitar....swap the pick-ups out to really make it sound like a higher-end model. Massive difference in tone and clarity.
      Definitely don't order anything without playing it first. Guitars have different neck shapes, different neck finishes, and different fret radius', so some will be more comfortable and easier to play.
