For someone who says “I can’t play lead” you sure as hell have a way of making that guitar sing!

    • @flekkzo
      @flekkzo 3 года назад +4

If the definition of playing lead is “writing and playing better than the top 10 guitarists of all time”, only 10 people can play lead. Ola plays just fine, hell he plays those Pantera solos like possessed.
It’s always fun seeing top guitarists in good interviews just geeking out about how much they love other people’s playing. Herman Li’s recent twitch streams shows that if nothing else.
I want Ola to join Herman for a talk and a play. Be it Coffee or twitch. I know improvising is a totally different skill, so no need to do that unless wanted.
I think I’ve played longer than Ola, and wow do I suck compared to him when playing. Doesn’t mean I won’t play:)

Great clean rhythm for introducing finger picking.

I found the best way to play a 7 string is to tune it to b standard with a high E as opposed to E standard with a low b. You can do this simply by tuning the G to F#. It means you can play the lower 6 strings in the same way as you would a 6 string.

For 1991 metal, Sepultura - Arise was a favorite. I had to do some searching to see if it was "the" favorite. In the same year, there was:
    - Mr Bungle - (Self Titled)
    - Overkill - Horrorscope
    - Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
    - Death - Human
    the "not quite metal" albums
    - Nirvana - Nevermind
    - Faith no More - Angle Dust
    - Sound Garden - Badmotorfinger
    - Infectious Grooves - The Plague ...
and the not metal at all
    - Primus - Sailing the Seas of Cheese
    - Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magic
It was a great year for diverse music. Mr Bungle still tops my list, even though they just ripped off Cardiacs and the clown motif (see R.E.S. and Tarred and Feathered).

(Yes I have a guy who sets up my guitars for me!) I'm also using a 76 LP for that same tuning. (Heresy!) But hey I set that one up all by myself! My Solar A.1 6 BOP, came tuned to D standard, all the way from Spain & thanks to the Evertune bridge didn't even need a tweak before I plugged it in!

Maybe for the next FAQ - speaking about string tension, I noticed in the Coffee with Ola you did with Dino, he mentioned that his Sun-God guitar has a fixed Floyd bridge because he likes the tension from the bridge to the nut, so my question is does having a double locking set-up like the FR give better tension for the same tuning vs a fixed bridge like a tune-o-matic and an open nut (assuming the tuning, string gauge and scale length are all the same). Been enjoying your videos for a couple years, they're really enjoyable to watch and the way you explain and talk about things really helps a dumbass drummer like me trying to be better at guitar. Skål!

Eh Ola, i hope that u are having a good week. It would be cool to see you and Bernth ( i'm sure you've Heard about him ) one day doing something together. Doing an interview with him would be nice. You guys are who i watch and relate to the most about advices, techniques, riffs and soloing, how to approach guitar and so on. It would be Nice to hear both of your opinions on these subjects because you guys are different guitar players, but with a lot of things in common. Hope i get to hear your opinion on this in the next FAQ !

I just got my first Solar 7 string the other day and LOVE IT!!! But I've been transitioning from 6 to 7 string for a while now. I like the view the 7 string as 2 guitars in 1. A standard tuned 6 string below, and a drop tuned 6 string above. Depending which perspective you're viewing the guitar from the extra string is either another high for more coloured clean chords or leads, or another low to add octaves or 5ths below power chords.

FAQ: Some people still worry about which country their guitars are made. With the options we have now, should we move away from this mindset?
Most guitars from $500 - $2000 feel great, with most companies (if not all) assembling them in Indonesia now. Much like the awesome Solars (Insert plug). Please educate us Sir Ola! 🤟

About the strings lasting longer question, I found “fast fret” really helped with acoustic strings for gigging and helping them last! Along with regular cleaning and after playing that might help a bit too 😊

Thomann sells Harley Benton strings for 1,50€ a set and they're amazing for the price. They have all the basic gauges and sets for 7 and 8 strings. For a hobbyist like myself the string are amazing value. I have no reason to buy something like daddario NYXL over the HB string.

I think one easy way to get into 7 String, is to drop the B-String, so you basically have Dropped Tuning and Standard at the same time. You can play everything you used to play on 6 String but have an addition string for deep dropped riffs

I've been playing for around 16 years and switched to 7 string nearly 2 years ago. I love it, it's almost like having 2 guitars in one. The best advice I got was to ignore the low 7th string for about a week and just play it like a normal guitar. It seems to have helped me a lot, got used to the feel of the wider neck as well as learned to play around that low string without it interfering. Now when I pick up a 6 string the neck feels like a toothpick lol.

To reuse your strings: Don't boil them! That fucks with the metal and makes them brittle. You can soak/wash them in denatured alcohol, but denatured alcohol can be expensive. The good news is you can use a lot of other things. Contact cleaner is also pretty expensive. Gasoline is dangerously flammable and smells, but it'll clean them. The best cheap thing to use is rubbing alcohol. Use the 98%, not the 70%. Put your strings in a little jar or something with the alcohol, let them soak for a day, give them a good shake once in a while, and your strings will be like new. You don't have to bother soaking the bare strings, only the wound ones, because oils and junk from your hands seeping into the winding is what makes them start to sound dull.

Fast fret string cleaner helps prolong strings. Hope that helps and you have access to it. I play a five string bass and those strings are not cheap.

Killer list. You basically just charted my adolescence as an emerging metalhead. Although I would have thrown 'Demanufacture' in there.

    Good list.
I personally can't do a 90's metal album list without giving a year to Paradise Lost, probably 92 for Shades of God and a year for Nevermore, much as I love Dream Theater probably 99 for Dreaming Neon Black. Same for 93.. I loved Heartwork but there is no way I can't pick Tool Undertow.
