These are my best childhood memories. My mother picked this game up for me and we played it together, we've been super fans ever since. We bonded so much over these games! The songs make me cry because I think of her :')
Kingdom Hearts is basically the definition of "tragedy". Speaking of tragedy, I'm so glad I'm not one of those people who only played Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2; they are going to be so confused when Kingdom Hearts 3 comes out.
Because those games are more than just lore, they have story elements essential to the series. Birth by Sleep for example is VERY important, so important that you literally can't have the the Kingdom Hearts storyline at all without it! Not only that, but Kingdom Hearts III will have so many references to the other games, that it will be impossible to understand without the knowledge that comes with the other games.
Just play them in order of release. They were made that way for a reason. I suggest playing Kingdom Hearts I first, then watching a movie of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, (including Kingdom Hearts: Reverse Rebirth) cause that game is horrible. Then play Kingdom Hearts II, and play Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days on the DS (if you can). Then play Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (which is on both on PSP and PS3), and watch a movie of Kingdom Hearts: Re: coded. Then play Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, and you're all set!

The 'spin off' you were talking about is still canon and fit well within the franchises, it build story from the last game and expand on it and continuing it, so with that, I'm not counting them as a spin off. Without those games we probably would still confused as hell right now figuring out how the hell from Sora to Roxas that we literally know nothing about if you don't play the 'spin off' game.

Well, the 'spin off' wasn't exactly a spin off at all. At least, for me anyway.
The 'spin off' you were talking about is still canon and fit well within the franchises, it build story from the last game and expand on it and continuing it, so with that, I'm not counting them as a spin off. Without those games we probably would still confused as hell right now figuring out how the hell from Sora to Roxas that we literally know nothing about if you don't play the 'spin off' game.

When I was kid not having internet, I would restart a game just to hear this song.
Haven't been able to play KH in a good while, but I always think of Hikaru Utada's singing. So good.
