  • In this episode of Reformation & Revival, Pastor Jared Longshore discusses a recent dustup about baptism during his recent appearance on the podcast, "CrossPolitic."
"The rise of paganism and cultural decay all around us shows both the need for a recovery of covenant theology and unity particularly among Covenantal and Reformed Christians be they Credo[baptist] or Paedo[baptist]."

@@IronFire116 but in effect, isn’t it the case that all Baptism is Credo? It is always according to someone’s statement of belief, be it the new adult convert who is baptised according to their confession of the faith, or of the father and mother of a child when paedobaptism is administered. Credo Baptism itself is biblical.
It is the workings out of covenantalism, headship, the Lordship of Christ over all, and perhaps the general attitude toward parenting etc etc where it seems the strain is focussed. Yet there are plenty of Reformed Baptists and Reformed Presbyterians who would agree (largely) on all those issues, which I think is what JL is now trying to say.

I came here seeing if there would be an apology and repentance for the misrepresentation of Baptist theology and the violation of the 9th commandment on the show in question. All I hear is doubling down and blaming me for not understanding what was meant by what was said. What was said was Credo Baptism caused the transgender movement and that Credo Baptists do not believe in Faith Alone. There is no way to misinterpret those remarks. The continual attempt to try and defend was was at best unintentional slander of your Baptist breatheran and at worst a deliberate misrepresentation of what we believe is truly sad.

“They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator-who is forever praised. Amen.
Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.
Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. “

If a comparison he’d been made between transgenderism and say, the “name it and claim it” teaching of the prosperity preachers (and the more apostate sects of the charismatic movement) I would say it’s apt and worthy of exploration, but to compare baptist theology (which teaches that our new identity as believers is a gift from God we receive upon recognizing and renouncing our old identity (from his perspective)) to that is foolish. Mr. Farley doesn’t understand Baptist theology, and would do well to think carefully and study before he makes such bold claims, and be prepared to defend them exegetically (which he did not even attempt to do during the episode). It’s not “expressive individualism” that causes people to be offended by this, its the belittling and caricaturing of the beliefs of fellow brothers through thoughtless words.

Even comparing transgenderism to "name it and claim it" is pushing a bit beyond a credible argument. I mean, yes you can link all sin together if given a long enough chain of logic, but I think it's a stretch argument at best. Surely there are better ways to oppose heresy than "you're supporting transgenderism" as the argument!

American baptists have even created the trans movement in Europe, Thailand, the Philippines, Australia, Canada...yeah, Farley's argument just fell apart because the trans movement is not uniquely American. Expressive individualism goes all the way back to the Fall, not American decisionist baptist theology, while I have much criticism of this theology. It's secularism, popularized by the religious thought of Marxism, that has crept into baptist theology rather than the other way around.
All of these 'clarifications' or 'qualifications' are coming across as obfuscations and the one guy who needs to be making them is so far silent. You're all running cover for him but it's pretty obvious he has disdain for baptist theology, reformed baptist theology included, because he was so brazen in his confirmation that American baptist theology was the "cause" of the trans movement; no qualifications, no clarifications, etc. which would seem to be pretty obvious to make in the moment if you're actually trying to communicate something as specific as what the rest of you are trying to say he was communicating in the moment.
Besides, the vast majority of people who are identifying as 'trans' are from broken homes in big cities, and are not from baptistic households or even another generation removed from one. One could object and say this is 'downstream' of revivalism, etc. but still, American decisionist baptist theology is asking people to make a decision in one direction: to believe in the Lord Jesus and be baptized, or remain in your sin as a hellbound sinner. It's not a "you can be whatever you want to be" theology.
Also, Jared, you should check out Carl Trueman's other book 'Republocrat' so you know you're quoting from someone who doesn't hold a full-fledged biblical belief on pretty much everything else except gay marriage and baby murder. For someone with a socialistic mindset on pretty much everything, it makes it easier to write a book criticizing individualism, even if much of what he says in the book is true.

I’m really surprised by the response from the crosspolitic guys on this one. You won’t even repeat what was said because it’s such an absurd statement, but instead of humility and repentance, you decide to dance around the topic and attempt to justify your ridiculous stance, that as far as I knew was that of the radical individual Farley, but given your refusal to denounce what’s self evidently false you have taken defense of the claim, the same claim you won’t even dare to make mention of.
I wasn’t offended when I heard it initially because I figure you guys say silly things just for fun all the time, but your response to the whole ordeal has really made me question the spiritual maturity of a program that seems unwilling under any circumstance to humble themselves when they make a mistake. You guys always talk about being godly men, well owning up to your mistakes is part of being a man, not playing Hegelian games with words.

I love your videos and I love most of your strong points.
However, this specific CrossPolitic episode linking credo baptism to transgenderism was stupid, unbiblical, irrational, and it contained an indefensible chain of countless logical fallacies.
It was indefensible and you should have shot it down on the spot. Missing that opportunity, you should repent and shoot it down publicly as a show of your repentance.
Of course, everybody has stoopid, yes, stooopid, ideas. However, when the stupidity arises to this level of magnitude, repentance and “What was I thinking???” responses are in order.
If you want to talk individualism, make a coherent case separate from credo baptism, which has a solid biblical foundation. The CrossPolitic logic was beyond stupid and into the sinful realm.

It doesn't seem true that baptism being a sign of faith from men AND a sign from God are mutually exclusive. In fact, from a relational standpoint, that is what makes perfect sense. It is the same with circumcision, isn't it?

Simply admitting it was wrong is so hard. The Pharisees were the "Reformed" Jews. 613 laws in order to be a faithful Jew. Or how about just two, according to the Law. Love Yahweh and Love Neighbor. One other comment, Remember the Jews were God's covenant people too. They had disdain for anyone different. Their confidence in the reality that they were God's chosen people led to arrogance, not humility. 1 Corinthians 4:7a "For who makes you so superior? What do you have that you didn’t receive?...."

The jovial demeanor and laughing during the CP program when the topic discussed and the accusations being forward were in fact dead serious and nothing to laugh about. This while all the participants argued point after point in complete absences of any Biblical foundation. Even if the accusations are true, to argue from man's wisdom or reasoning or logic falls far short. The measuring stick, the standard, is God's Word. On the CP program that identified Baptist Theology as the cause of the transgender movement, not one participant ever cracked open a Bible. And quoting Carl Truman in this video does not help nor make one's case. Citing the LBC or the WCF though may be accurate in their wording, none of these quotes have any authority. What is the "cause" for the perversion playing out before us? Open your Bible to: Psalms 10:4, 56:5; Proverbs 12:5 and Matthew 15:19 (a small sample). Have the gentlemen of CP forgotten the "T"? Hint: TULIP. Exactly, how then is Baptist Theology culpable? Then to assert, those who strongly disagree and insist on clear Biblical exegesis regarding Farley's statement, somehow validate his accusation (3:33), reveals a blind-spot all the CP participants have. Then at the end of this video, we are provided a parting shot, just untwist your "nickers." Deflecting never helps make your case.

And that in itself, requires a kind of autonomy that isn’t biblical. I can admit that, and I’m reformed baptist. This seems to miss the point made by Charles Taylor and the social imaginary. Which Truman mentioned in rise and triumph. Again, the problem is that the secularism of the day has made it in to the church, and no Protestant denomination is free from that. Jared and his Presbyterian friends should do well to note that. If they don’t, then the PCUSA may cast an unfortunately long shadow. The Gospel:
    Plain and
    Simple
“But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent
beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your
minds should be corrupted from the simplicity
that is in Christ.” - 2 Corithians 11:3
Ask someone today if they are saved and
you will most likely hear responses like these:
“I have accepted Jesus into my heart.” Or “I
have made him Lord of my life.” “I’ve been
baptized.” “I said a prayer.” Sounds all good
and churchy don’t it; but it is difficult to de-termine whether or not a person actually
knows the gospel that saves them. These use￾less phrases don’t describe a thing about what
the gospel is and has left a devastating effect
of people not knowing what it is that they are
saved from nor how they are saved; which
leaves a more serious effect of people ques￾tioning their salvation.
Let’s not muddy the simplicity of salva￾tion that is in Christ with vague church
sounding phrases that do not communicate
anything. But rather present God’s word with
clarity and assuredness. So here is the gospel:
    plain and simple.
Sin was passed upon all men by one man
Adam, and death is a consequence of this sin
(Rom 5:12). Mankind has an eternal destiny of
condemnation and wrath - Hell - because of
this sin (Rom 6:23). No matter what good
works one might do we are still found sinners
in the sight of our Creator God. And all un￾righteousness and those who follow get in￾dignation and wrath. We cannot be found
righteous for by God’s law we are found sin￾ners (Rom 3:19-20). If we have broken even
one law we are found guilty.
It is for this reason of not being able to
create our own righteousness and being born
in a sinful flesh that we need a savior (Titus
3:5). Christ is that Savior, God manifested in
the flesh, sinless, died in our place on a cross
2000 years ago. Taking upon him the wrath
and judgement that was intended for us sin￾ners. And it is through his bloodshed, burial,
and resurrection on our behalf that we are
able to have peace with God and forgiveness
of our sins (1 Cor 15:1-4, Col 3:14). This good
news is unto all but only those that believe in
it are made righteous in Christ (Romans
    3:22).
It is then after we have heard this good
news of Christ’s righteousness available to us freely, that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit
and we are now part of Christ’s body the
    church (Eph 1:13)
There is nothing that we need to do, no
good works that are required, and no bad
works that can separate us from our new po￾sition in Christ (Romans 8:35-39).
Faith and belief in this information from
    God’s word is the gospel.
The gospel is not accepting Jesus into your
heart. The gospel is not making him lord of
your life, it is not saying a prayer and it is not
    being baptized with water.
So next time someone asks you if you are
saved. Give them the clear assured answer
“Yes! And let me tell you why
